Glen Cove, NY
My brother has been working at American Cafe for the past 5 years. Great food and a nice, cozy atmosphere. Best thing about it is once you've finished eating, you can run in next door and finish off with a nice starbucks coffee. I reccomend their wraps (cajun blt) and their bread pudding is the best!

This place has delicious soup and sandwiches, but I recommend getting take-out.
Most times I've eaten here with co-workers on our lunch break, we've sat in the cafe for over 35-45 minutes waiting for our food. Not complicated items, either - chicken sandwiches and grilled cheese! We also usually have to beg for refills and the bill at the end of the meal.
Good food... poor service -

Great soups, pretty good service, awesome meatloaf, great BBQ chicken salad, lots of options. Try it out.

Glen Cove, NY
Had the BBQ chicken salad twice! Very cute little place; looks like a french cafe but I guess the food is American (hence the name). OK for kids if you go early enough, otherwise it can be a little crowded.

Long Beach, NY
Very good comfort food! I must say I am a vegetarian & they make an amazing veggie burger special with sauteed mushroom, melted cheese & grilled tomato...yum, I want one right now! For the non-vegs out there they have a really tasty meatloaf, great salads & for a sweet treat the blondies are really good!

Homey food, wait staff that remembers you, great music and the soup is the best I've had. Wish they'd expand - it's getting difficult to get a table!! Don't miss this if you're in Glen Cove.

Everytime I go home to Long Island I end up eating at American Cafe. Their restaurant is cozy and warm and has a delicious menu of homemade soups, sandwiches, and deserts. I've never ordered something I didn't like. Definitely try the soup, but keep in mind that it's quite filling!

Glen Head, NY
I LOVE THIS PLACE and happily recommend for a casual meal. Great veggie burger, awesome French toast, good soup and sandwiches. Prices very good. Kitchen and/or wait staff can be....casual. Friendly but sometimes a little checked out. But worth it, not a deal breaker.

Locust Valley, NY
This place is absolutely great. It's true comfort food, from the soups to the sandwiches to the entrees to the dessert. The service is always excellent and the prices are modest. I know l sound like I'm related to the owners (I don't know them), but this is just an innovative, casual place that deserves all the compliments it can get. The nice thing is that you can go in there for anything you want, even just dessert (check out the cakes and pies) and coffee. It does get crowded at times and the tables are a little tight, but the ebb and flow of customers seem to be dependent on the movie theater nearby. Go between movies and you'll be just fine. And there's plenty of parking in the garage around the corner.

Review from John N.
Langhorne, PA
The inside of the American Cafe is slightly cramped. Despite this, there is ample room to enjoy dining, at least when we went during an off-hour time with fewer patrons joining us at the tables. The first thing I noticed about this place is the menu here. The menu isn't very large at all. Not that this is necessarily a bad thing...this way the cooks can perfect the dishes they have. However, I did expect a larger selection. I opted for the corn soup (a soup of the day at the time) and south of the border burger. The soup came out with a bread basket with butter; it was more than enough bread too! The south of the border burger was delicious. I ordered it medium rare, and it came back a little too browned for what I asked. I took a few bites and was extremely pleased at their burger: its meat was tender and crumbly, almost like it had been stewing all day. It was also massive! I had to take it home to finish it later. My dining partner had an omelet. Although I can't say for myself, she did wish to tell of how delicious it was (she also took the remainders home due to a large portion size). One caveat I had with the American Cafe was a noticeable lack of service. Perhaps because it was lunch on a weekday at an off-time, but we didn't have our drinks refilled until the very end, after the appetizer and main course. To me, refilling drinks is extremely important. Nevertheless, the service is forgiveable considering how delicious and homey the food was here. The prices are a little high but oh well...it's Long Island, what do you expect?
