Kicking my post-baby ass into shape one visit at a time.

Gina and Dave are highly experienced and accomplished-experts in their field.

Looking forward to a long relationship with this gym.  Going to take my daughter there, too,  when she is old enough for the kid classes.

I havent been in san diego longer than a year, but ive tried out a LOT of gyms. This place is one of the WORST. They have the sketchiest manager and owner ive ever met. I thought it was just the manager who was a joker. Turns out the joker is the owner. Ive heard him badmouthing other people more often then ive seen him training other people. I wouldnt be surprised if he had said things about me behind my back. I had heard bad things about this place, but i decided to give it a chance.  After a while, i couldnt stand coming back. I had put this hellhole out of my mind until my girlfriend mentioned it.

When i first talked to the manager over the phone, it seemed like he was in a hurry. Turns out he was just being rude. The prices were much higher than i was told. Funny thing is that the equipment is much older than I expected. This place sure doesnt charge beater prices for their beater gym. The manager might be a good fighter, but he needs to get out of the fighting and training business unless hes the one doing the fighting and training. If i didnt have good standards or experience with other gyms, it might not have been as important. I still recognize a bad trainer when i see it.

Dave left me a crappy message. Nice try Dave the @$#$!, but Im real. My toilet doesnt just plug itself. Can you clean it out for me? Get a life.

Dave threatens and insults those who post the negative but honest reviews about his "gym".  The positive & scripted reviews here come from people I've never seen at the gym, except for a tiny few that were asked to post a "positive review" (not an honest one).

Dave lies in his responses to posts while he's burying them... but I'd suggest you meet the guy.  He's obviously better than us.

    Obviously.

He QUICKLY responds to reviews with less than 5 stars, and suggests you check out the reviews on HIS website.  Kinda like using yourself as a reference, people don't go for it.  Dave, if I make a video review for your youtube page, would you post it?

Regina R.?  Her profile was made just to post that review.  She was a member since the day her only review was made.  I'm saying 'her' as if we don't know it's Dave.

All of your reviews are either 5 stars or 1, and most of the 1 star reviews have pics and multiple reviews in their profile.  Dave, you should post more fake reviews from their profile so your bs will look more legit.  I mean, if you're gonna lie, may as well do it right.

    MOST RECENT UPDATE:

Dave contacted me about this review.  I won't spend the entire night trying to remember the whole conversation, but let's just say I haven't been called a "faggot" since grade school.

WARNING: this is a great gym if you can handle being called an idiot and being bullied into submission. he will definitely kick your butt into shape HOWEVER, is has very little patience with his students and is running his business under is own law which he tries to enforce by being the louder one in a yelling match.

    this is my issue:

i joined this gym thinking i was going to be going a few times a week and then my bills became too much and i had to get a second job and stop going. i signed a year contract and since i fully support small business and my word i had no problem paying out the remainder of my contract. This company changed their name in the middle of my contract which resulted in a "hiccup" with their system and THEY did not charge me for one month as a result. the day after my contract ended i went over to the gym to sign the letter stating that i did not want to continue to go month to month and i wanted to end my membership. Dave informed me that because their system had the hiccup that if i was not charged for the month that a lot of other people hadn't been charged for that i would need to pay it out attached to the end of my contract date. i stated that that was fine with me. as a result the following month a payment came out - the amount of the contract price agreed upon for the month to month rate. it was more than the payment i owed but because i am busy and don't have time to cry over 15 dollars, i decided to let it go as long as they didn't charge me for the next month. come the 15th of this month they STILL had not canceled me.
i called to talk to him and after saying that he had lost my letter somewhere on his desk stating that i wanted to cancel dated march 15th because his desk was a mess and "if i could see it i would understand"  he started raising his voice at me and talking over me telling me that because i missed a payment (not my fault, HIS fault) that my contract wasn't finished and he was going to continue charging me at the month to month rate until i paid him the month i had missed. after reading through the contract (which i have in my hand) assigned to American Boxing Association (which isn't the name on my bank statements as of June of 2011. it is now Republic Training) it is for a monetary value and when that value was reached as long as i gave 30 days notice before the billing cycle i could cancel.

i am currently seeking legal advice as to how to move forward.

Pro-Tip: Check out the hidden reviews Dave has filtered out at the bottom of the page! Avoid this place like that sweaty workout sock you forget about until you find it 6 months later, brownish green and full of stank. Save yourself some trouble, aggravation, and money.

Update 6&(7) - Hothead owner updates with link to "Boxing".

Update 8 - I am not a paid employee of Yelp. Great conspiracy theory :D

    ***Update 5 - Dec. 12***
    Owner threatens to sue me:
"Obviously neither of us will ever back down, however, you have now crossed a line of manipulation and deception that I wont even comment on.
I have taken screen copies of all correspondence including the votes on your comments which will be used to establish actual financial loss on my part.
Where as you have danced on the line of libel, and I do believe you crossed it on more than one occasion, it is CLEAR that your "review" is for the sole purpose to harass, manipulate reader perception and do harm to my image and the image of my company.
I will be forwarding all content to my attorney.
Trust me when I say we will meet in court and it will not be a small claims matter.  Trust me when I say, we will subpoena your contact info from yelp for the purpose of filing and serving a civil harassment suit as well as filing any other suits my attorney feels are appropriate including but not limited to a financial claim.
TRUST me when I say, a public response to this email is well within your rights, but would be a very bad idea.
You have 72 hours to remove your review in entirety or I WILL persue this to the fullest extent of the law.
Please keep in mind Will...I do not need to hire an attorney.  One of my best friends and long time students is a brilliant litigator who will jump to file and pursue this for me pro bono.
I expect this down no later than Tuesday night.  Given your response time to my updates, that should be no problem.
If you choose to leave your statements intact, I suggest you seek legal counsel, because you will need it!"

[From my own Bar approved lawyer friends: "It's only libel if you lie." Everything I have said is, in my opinion, true based off of my experience with this owner. I was also advised to call the police and report Dave's threats should he continue along this path].

***Update 4 - Dec. 7*** Owner  finally talks about his business instead of just insulting me to get me to back down. http://kgtv.cityvoter.... (Dave's gym is not in the Top anything for "Gym", "Martial Arts", or "Boot Camp").

Dave tries to defend his insults by claiming he was insulted first. I guess Gandhi was wrong about the whole "Eye for an eye" thing. If you're a normal to good human being, you deserve better. Go somewhere else.

***Update 3*** I only do these updates because decent people deserve better treatment than this guy provides. Dave decided to delete some of the harsher insults, shortened his rant, and rationalized more of his negative actions in his latest update. If he spent more time on his business instead of spiting people, he'd be a lot more successful. Don't do business with this guy unless you want aggravation and trouble.

    ***Update 2***
This time the owner edited his comment 3 times in an hour. His update goes on to insult me, my family, and random people... wow. Hahaha.

Also, check out some of the excellent gyms in SD on the right side of the page. You'll see that you get a great workout AND respect from the other places. It's an unbeatable 1-2 punch!

[UPDATE: The super "attentive" owner responded to my "lame" review in less than 6 hours. Does anyone else think it's weird that all of the 1-star reviews for his business are hidden in the "Filtered" section or have been removed for violating Yelp's TOS? Maybe instead of focusing on bad mouthing potential customers, the owner should focus more on customer service and making his business better. I don't have anything against this guy, but you catch more flies with honey than vinegar. **I do wish his family the best since I can only assume this is their only source of income. Why else would the owner be so attentive?

I actually bought 2 bottles of water for $1 each to support this place when I was here.

Minus 5 stars for this owner in his current angry state. Hopefully he becomes more positive and we can get him some positive stars.

The equipment I used was old and some of it is way beyond well-worn. I don't know how often they clean the gloves and other equipment. When I put on a pair of gloves, they were warm and sweaty... not my kind of workout party.

I am not on here to write a BS review. I am simply speaking the truth about this business and I will only speak on my experience. I will tell you it has been a painful one. When I first joined it was great and I was telling everyone! I am not sure what happened, but now I am miserable and want nothing to do with the gym. I recently lost my job and can't afford the monthly payments. Dave was not receptacle to this and could really careless. He even stated I have "ISSUES" and "personal problems". I, like many other people in this economy have hit a wall. Im sure if I was with any other gym they would be willing to work with me.

I recently went to the gym to discuss these issues with Dave and he immediately started calling me a liar and kicked me off the property because I couldn't prove in writing that I brought up payments to both Dave and Gina many times. He then threatened to call the police if I didn't leave. Not once did he discuss reimbursement of money nor was he willing to work with me on future payments. This is unacceptable for a business and against the law because I am still paying my monthly dues. He was not willing to listen and continued to talk over me. Because he is so predictable I know he will say this when he responds to my review, but I was behind on my payments because I was let go from my job, which is what started this mess. Nevertheless, there is no reason for this kind of behavior from American Boxing.

I had tried a few gyms before I found American Boxing and after one class I knew I had found what I was looking for.  I was a complete novice who wanted to learn to box and potentially compete down the road.  The coaches took the time to work with me both in the group classes and 1 on 1 and my fitness and skills really developed.

The environment here is one of success, whether your goal is fitness or competition there is something here for you.  There is a wide variety of classes from Boxing and Muay Thai to Crossfit.  I can honestly say that I hadn't ever worked out harder than these classes but the results came quickly, I dropped 20 lbs in a couple of months with no real diet change.

What I like is that this gym provides more than just a workout, the coaches provide nutriton advice and have a network that gives members discounts to massage therapy, chiropractors etc.

If you're looking for results this is the place to come to.

Last Saturday, my boyfriend, coworker Liz and I finally checked out the Muay Thai class up in PB for the 12:30pm class.  I spoke with Gina on the phone and she told me to be there at 12:15PM and bring water.  Of course, I gotta listen to Miss Muay Thai Champ.

Unfortunately, Gina and the rest of the fighters/trainers were up in LA for a fight.  The trainer that subbed in was not bad himself. He made us sweat reaaaaal hard.  I haven't done kickboxing since 07 so I LOVED it.  It was my bf's first time EVER and he never really wanted to do it because he thought it was mainstream.  But after that class, he is now interested in learning it.  That was the first time I ever seen him tired and he works out pretty damn hard (come on-- former marine).  In fact, we all do. The class kicked my ass.

I was pretty sore for a good 3 days. I noticed some bruising on my shin, foot and elbow. Liz had some pretty hardcore bruises on her shin herself.

Overall, it felt more like a fighters gym in there. Not all fancy, wancy like the Boxing Club I used to go to.  It was small, the class size was small too therefore we got more one-on-one attention by the trainer. So it was great...We all want to come back again when Gina is instructing. 5 STARS!

I absolutely love this gym and the trainers. I went to  this gym 1+ years and loved how my body was changing due to the intense workouts. I regret I couldn't keep it up as I moved out of the area. I have always been very athletic; (marathons, freediving, hiking...etc) but Muay Thai kickboxing changed my body in ways which I didn't get from my other activities. My abs became rock hard and kicks to the bag increased with strength and speed, my arms got very tone...People would comment on how good I looked! Also another perk...met my husband at this gym so this gym is special to me! :) and...hellllooo.....you'd be training with the best, a current world muay thay champion !! You can't ask for anything more...

I actually train in OC but I'm always looking for other places. I was on a trip to San Diego and tried this place out it came highly reccommended and I was not disappointed. From the minute I walked in the owners and staff were very friendly. They are very knoweledgeable. If you want to move to the next level and want to train like a fighter this is the place. The training is hard, as it should be. It's a very relaxed almost family feel here. I can't say enough good things about this place I would drive there just to train on the weekends. There are a lot of schools out there but this is definately one of the best. Check it out you will be glad you did!!

It took me a long time to find a gym down in San Diego.  I had over two years muay thai experience before training at american boxing.  This is a great place to be if you want to push yourself and compete.  Lots of one on one attention, because the class sizes are kept small.  There are a lot of great people training there and I would recommend the place to anyone looking for a new spot to train.  They will let you check out the gym for awhile too; I know some places in the area jump on you so fast and pressure you for a commitment.

I had been interested in taking muay thai classes for a couple of years, but could never seem to find a gym that I (as well as my parents) felt comfortable about. I tried out American Boxing and loved it. American Boxing has a welcoming environment, the classes are small, and the people are friendly. This is important because people don't feel that they are being lost in the crowd in the classes. The classes always have interesting workouts and time moves faster when you're with others in a class. The trainers at this gym are not just superb fighters themselves, but they are also great teachers. The coaches have extensive knowledge on fitness and nutrition and are not reluctant to give it out. They know all the tricks to help people achieve the results that they want and understand that everyone is different and everyone's capabilities are different so they work each individual with their best speed. I know that this was a smart investment for me because I've been told I look healthier since I've been going here (from family that doesn't know that I have joined this gym); I always look forward to going to the gym now because I can see myself improving and I know it is because of the great care that the coaches take in helping everyone improve - it's also a huge stress reliever! If you are looking for a great place to train or workout, I would highly recommend American Boxing.  This gym is a great long-term investment for both your mental and physical well-being.
