I love this place.  It's great for a girls night of gossip or a romantic night out with the hubby.  Their wine selection is pretty good and their cheese plate is the best I've ever had.

This is one of my favorite chill night out spots.  It does get a little crowded on the weekends.  I like to go during the week so I can sit at the bar.  The guys that work there are all fantastic.  They are very friendly and can always help you pick out a great wine.  This place can get a little pricey when drinking by the glass.  I suggest buying by the bottle and sharing.

For the single ladies, the guys that work there are insane eye candy.

What a cute establishment!! I just discovered it on a Sunday night-wine catch up sesh with a few friends and now am in love. Seeing as it is only a few blocks away from me with a great selection of wine and apps, I definitely want to consider making it a regular Sunday night wine-down activity.

I was thoroughly impressed with their wine list and the variety of appetizers / snacks. We ended up choosing the cheese plate, which was fantastic for our mood. The place is intimate enough for a small gathering but also has couches for larger groups. Apparently they have music / bands perform as well!

I would say that the service was a little lacking. I suppose comparing wine shops in LA and other cities or even mixologists - I was expecting more interaction in choosing which wines we should try or which cheeses would pair well . . . In general, the service did not match the ambiance . . .

While I still want to keep visiting - it isn't because of the service, it is mostly because of the variety of wine and the proximity to my place

Hopefully that was just a bad night so we'll see what happens next time!

    Solid wine joint!

Came here after a nice early dinner with the wife at Fleur de Lys and enjoyed a few glasses of wine.  We shared a pair of stools in a cozy little nook at the front of the bar.

The service was friendly, and the place was definitely energetic without being obnoxiously loud.  Hate loud wine bars.

The ambience was just right.  You can actually carry on a conversation without feeling like you're drinking wine in a museum.  They have nice pours for decent prices.  Would certainly recommend it.

Authentically french! How so? The classy wine decor and when I went it was filled with French people conversing and singing in French! It was adorable, loud but I was just jealous I couldn't join. Even the workers there share the French accent. Tres magnifique!

Bf wanted to check out their open mic night and glad we did! Connie Lim (from The Voice) performed and it was hauntingly beautiful and fitting to the environment. The place was packed so we sat in the back. Wish we made it for the Happy hour. They serve a flight of 3 for around $7!

I got a glass of Rose, which was bland but the Bf's Chardonnay was on point! Not too sharp, flavorful, flowery, and perfect with what we ordered.

Cheese/Charcuterie Plate ($25): BEST plate I've had by far. Filled with 6 different slices of charcuterie (2 hams, 2 salamis, Coppa, and Prosciutto). You can choose 3 cheeses (we got: Pecorino Romano, Trio of Goat, and Point l'Eveque). I loved all of them but the third the most for its soft, creamy texture. Also included on the plate: trio of honey spread, cornichons, pickled onion, olives, and dijon mustard!

Arugula Beet Salad: Such a wonderful combination of flavors. The arugula was mellow and complemented the red and yellow beets. Topped with goat cheese crumbles.

SF students are truly lucky to have such a cool place to hang out at!

Right next to my house, it's the wine bar that all others are compared to.  Excellent happy hour and great bites.  My favorite time is Saturday at 5:30 when it's nice and empty.  This place is packed most other times and for good reason.

Contagiously Sexy! Dangerously Haute! Fabulously French!

I couldn't decide between the three. They all work so well for Amelie.

The beau had been hanging here quite a bit, so naturally I needed to investigate the scene. Lo and behold the place is waaaaaay too chic, sultry, and packed with beautiful people; a prime spot for singles to mingle (ahem...what's wrong with this picture, monsieur boyfriend!?) Sneaky little bugger.

But yes, Amelie is incredibly loveable, possibly even my new favorite wine bar in SF thanks to it's très sexy energy; just enough to escort you into a frivolous Friday mood, with those glowing red wine-bottle light fixtures, glorious plateaux du fromages that come with a bottomless canvas sack-o-bread- c'est rustic! But the most delightful imports are not the fermented grapes or stinky cheese, but the charming French, Spanish, and Turkish waiters dishing out flirtatious smiles at no extra charge.

Like most every fabulous spot in SF, the bar packs out easily and even the sweetest girls can turn into bar stool vultures without even realizing it. Amelie's allure is that powerful. Swooping in can pay off, but if you've got a group of 4 or more, and plan to order some eats, put your name in for a table because it's oh-so comfy to have the drinks come to you and not the other way around.

I can't speak in specifics about the wine, as the bottles merely arrived without my input, but from what I hear their prices are much more reasonable than some other upscale wine bars in town. Or, as my alchy companions noted "this is more of a drinking place than a sipping place"... Grâce à Dieu.

Wow! This is a packed wine bar!  It's a small narrow wine bar and located in the most happening street in Nob Hill.  Very loud and staff wasn't very attentive due to the crowd.  The owners are French and really knew his wine.  I didn't like the service here though. I took a long time for the waiter to take our order and to serve us our food.

    Snack:
    -Le plateau parfait (apero) $25.00
Cheese plate and Charcuterie plate in one only big plateau (Great assortment of cheese and love the honey!)

-Quiche,crème fraiche, eggs, ham, comte gruyere, mozzarella, leeks, and mix green salad $7.00 (Quiche was ok. Nothing memorable)

Happy hour deal is $10 Flights for three choices of wine.  After 7PM is $14 Flights.

I definitely would come here to grab a pre drink but wouldn't come here for food.

    Love it.

A New York vibe in Polk street. This place is everything a wine bar should be.
The ambiance is just wonderful, the place feels good with a not too loud trendy music. I recommend the bar though tables are fine as well.

The food selection is minimal, but way more than you would expect from a wine bar. Escargot, charcuterie and a tasty selection of cheese topped with some salads and great creme brulee. Don't worry about coming hungry :)

    And of course, the wine...
A great selection of most popular wines, I recommend the Justin which was a great flavorful cab.

Thanks yelp community for recommending Amelie! We make the annual birthday trek to SF every May and are always looking for great neighborhood restarants, and this was most definatly it! Fantastic wine at equally fantastic prices, great service, great food!  What more can you ask for?  The owner /bar tender was congenial  and inviting... Oh and thanks for the delicious apertf you sent to the table for all of my party. Considering that we only visit the bay area once a year, we really never go to the same restarant more than once, but I can tell you we will return to Amelie!

I am a fan of this place. I did however get a bad experience once out of four so minus 1 star for a rude waiter. I shouldve asked for his name but whatever, he has short curley hair, about 5'11 of so.

Anyway, i like this place because the the servers are USUALLY very nice and sweet. Can really hold a decent conversation. I always try to get there before 10pm so i can order foie gras before the kitchen closes, but life gets in the way. I usually get the Reisling, and a plate of assorted cheese and meat plate. We dont always get seats in the back but that's ok. So all of ^ gave it a 4 star place. The mood, the food, and the wine. The bald man always checked on us and provided us with warm bread and always joked, smiled, and laughed with us, which made us feel welcomed and made the experice enjoyable everytime until....

(took away one star because) the waiter that night with the curley hair was a bit rude. I ask if we could order a plate of meat and he said "no." Just one word and walked away and it wasnt that busy that monday night. Then i was confused because the bald man told us before we could ask for meats and cheese because they just put it on a cutting board so i was thrown off a bit. Then i ordered the reisling my usual and he asked which one and i said "the 2007 one?" then he replies, "that doesnt help" then i replied "Well, i would think you know your own menu considering the fact that there's only 2 reislings on the menu." and then he walked away. He just seemed fustrated the whole night being our server and i understand that we all have one of those "fuck you days" but c'mon it just ruined our night too.

Well i would recommend going just dodge the bad mood guy

Amelie is hands down my favorite wine bar in all of San Francisco! Granted, it's only two blocks away, and I haven't experienced every single wine bar in the city, but in my opinion, Amelie is as good as it gets.

Most nights it's pretty crowded, but I've never had trouble getting seated (there are also lots of seats in the front and at the bar). The waiters have lots of knowledge about their extensive wine list, and they all have great accents and are super friendly! Their service always keeps me coming back.

As for the food, I have yet to taste something I don't like. Their cheese plates are amazing! Their prices are pretty reasonable, too. Two people can split a bottle of wine and get some food for about $40. Of course, there are the more expensive wines as well. Their desserts are amazing as well!

Overall, Amelie is amazing. I love it, and I'd definitely recommend it over and over again!

This has been my go to place for a while until today.  I came in with two other friends and had already ordered one bottle of wine.  After we finished that bottle we ordered another bottle and to my surprise; they were out of it.... They did not apologize for inconveniencing our happy drinking mood  but on top of that they became extremely rude thereafter.  Please just because your girlfriend dumped you; don't take it out on us.

Context: rating as a big time wine lover who wants to discover all the return-worthy wine bars in the city I.e. I don't live in the hood, but went out of my way to check Amelie out based on Yelp's (misleading) high ratings for it.

Headline: solid choice for a neighborhood spot & good happy hour deals--absolutely NOT a worthy destination wine bar for those eager for great wine tasting

Rating for quality wine bar: 2

    Food: 3
    Service: 3
    Ambiance: 3

I was disappointed.  The champagnes we had were FLAT--not a bubble in sight. I ordered a flight, and only one had a last weak gasp of bubbles left. This is a wine bar, not a dive bar!

When we told the waiter, he was good enough to change my friend's glass, and sure enough the bubbles were much livelier from the fresh bottle. But he didn't even bother to switch my flight of unbubblies except to top off the dead one that was the same as my friend's with some fresh bubbles--as if he were doing me a great favor!

All in all, this is a whole class down from places like the Hidden Vine.  I re-read the reviews as I am greatly confused by the high ratings if this mediocre wine bar.  Seems like most people love it because (a) it's a nice neighborhood hangout, and (b) it's a great deal for happy hour.  So if convenience and a good deal is your criteria and you're in the hood, Amelie's a good choice. Just don't come expecting to be introduced to amazing wine discoveries that you'd want to bring home.

I went to Amelie for a girls night during a weekend and had a great experience. I have been to Amelie a few times before, but only during the week for their happy hour specials.

Their wine selection is pretty big and they offer flights and happy hour specials. Cheese plates are very creative and the food is tasty.

I highly recommend Amelie for both happy hour and a weekend meet up place. :)

This would be the perfect spot for a date! Or if you're single...definitely a great place to meet up with the other singles of SF.  I'll be coming back for sure.

Came for the first time on a Friday night - post yoga. I've been hearing about Amelie from my roommate for a few months so I am glad Danielle M. suggested it!!

As we walked in, I instantly loved the atmosphere. We scored seats in the front section and were helped right away.
$10 wine flights during happy hour with LOTS of choices. Only a few food choices during happy hour but we ordered off of the normal menu.
We shared the warm pistachio goat cheese. I absolutely loved the combination of caramelized onions, honey and pistachios and of course awesome french bread.

Amelie is a cute, nice wine bar. They have a good selection of wines, and what looks to be a nice food menu (I haven't tried anything yet).  I would say Amelie is a classic first date spot -- but a little too crowded to really provide that great of an experience.  I've been with some small groups of friends, and it just always feels too crowded to find a place to sit and relax.  Frankly, it's one of the best spots on Polk, but it isn't one of the best places I've ever been to.

One thing I do LOVE is their hanging light fixture over the bar.  I think it is the Ingo Maurer Zettel'z 5.  Beautiful.

I wish I knew more about wine - the list here is pretty vast.  The ambiance is great, the place was packed when I went.  There is a little more room in the back, but we ended up sitting up by the front. The waiter was pretty attentive, and his wine recommendations were decent.

I would like to come here on a weekend when it's a little less crowded!

The atmosphere is really nice. The staff is polite but only mildly attentive. We had to clear our own table and pile our dirty dishes on the side. We waited a good twenty minutes to give the waiter the opportunity to take care of it. The menu is quite limited. Not the place to eat for a vegetarian and they don't serve tea.  Nevertheless, it is still a lot of fun and great place to socialise and have drinks.

Yes, great deals here. On Monday they had a $30 wine bottle special that came with a cheese plate valued at ~$15. What a steal!

It was crowded on the Monday. They have cool bottle decor. I also love the canvas bag of bread that sounds like a bag of shells. Sounds like gold coins inside the bag.

Ummm... I guess I have to give this a place 5-stars?

Why you ask? It so happened to be the place where I had my first date with the Woman.

Okay okay, so what about this place (itself) deserves 5 stars?
    - Solid service.
    - Excellent selection of wines.
    - Good ambiance.
    - Good appetizer-type food (you will NOT be getting a real meal here -- unless your diet consists solely on wine, cheese, bread, and cured meat).

Oh, and we came back here for each of our anniversaries (1st and 2nd years).

Great wine bar and lounge. My first time on a busy Saturday night before a movie.
    Immediately after we walked in,
the bartender hands us the menu.It was totally packed with no seats. We stood over by the side and sure enough the waiter comes by immediately to takes our drink order. We ask him for 2 seats when available and 10 minutes later he found us seats. Water was brought by quickly  also.
Best service I can remember in a packed bar/lounge ! Only thing , it was quite noisy.
But so what. Will come back and try some of the food etc.

So here is the diggity about Amelie.

My friend, Elsa, came in visit San Francisco and so I made my way up there with out other mutual friend, Ha.  Now Ha has been living in the Bay Area her whole life and knows a little about the ins and outs of where to go.  She suggested we keep our drink on and grab a glass of wine here after indulging in some amazing Sangria and Picaro.

I have to admit, after embracing a couple of pitchers of Sangria with my friends, I was a little tipsy.  Although I lost my mobility functions when it came to pouring drinks, I still sober enough to make informed decisions.

The place was nice.  It had a good after dinner drinks feel to it.  At first my friend really did not like our waiter.  I have to admit he did have the whole 'I'm so cool because I wear skinny jeans, sport a mustache and live in the city' air about him but he did know his stuff when it came to wine.   In the end, I guess its better that he was a little cocky yet helpful when it came to our wine orders.

I would definitely go back next time I'm in the city and decide to have a nice glass of wine.

Amelie's is a nice enough place....a little loud, and not what I would really consider for the wine loving taster type....it is more of a trendy sit and sip. I far prefer The Nectar Wine Lounge in the marina district....it's happy hour deal is better (cheaper), it is more laid back, not as loud, and a little more helpful in terms of getting recommendations for what to try and such.

5 stars for the ambiance and HH $10 flight (3 glasses of wine) deal!

Service : Undoubtedly great! The bartenders are very knowledgeable and helpful.

Decor : Cozy dimly lit, quite intimate. Glowing red bottles on the walls and the hanging bunch of miscellaneous notes above the bar is cool piece of art !!

Happy Hour : Highlight is 3 glasses of wine for $10, cant beat it! Can choose any from the list. The pours are quite generous. So grab a seat early for the HH from 5.30 - 7pm as it gets crowded soon.

At the end of 3 glasses you are sure to get buzzed!

This place just continues to get better and better. It has become at Thursday night tradition at this point. And I swear the people who come here are getting classier and classier too!

Amelie creates an absolutely perfect relaxed (but very much alive) atmosphere, with great service as always, the constant hum of three dozen conversations draped over increasingly better music.

This place is pretty much EXACTLY the kind of relaxed evening you should be enjoying on a Thursday night. The tables in the front are perfect since they seat six, and allow the right balance for a small group of friends, where you don't feel like you are on top of the person next to you and yet don't have to yell.

The Result? We spent 4+ hours here last night. A new record.

I can't believe I haven't reviewed Amelie before. I used live about 100 feet from the place when it opened, and my old roommate and I were in there regularly until I moved away, several years later.

On my most recent visit (earlier this year), it was clear that the formula still works: large pours of OK wines, in a sexy atmosphere is what's it's all about.

It can be a bit much on the weekend, once the B&T crowd rolls in, but during the week you still get the same low-key vibe and good service from when they first opened.

My old roommate is still friends with Jean-Paul and he says that their New York wine bar will be opening soon. I don't have confirmation on the name yet, but PM me if you want the details.

I have not forgotten about you Amelie.

But giving away my reservation on my fete d'anniv was a pretty drastic measure on your part for the worst kind of attention.  I understand you are tormented with moral scruples.  I, unfortunately, never forget.

    Yours in haste,

Very nicely decorated place.  Light shaders were red and shaped like wine bottles which gave it a romantic/mysterious ambiance.  We got the cheese plate with wine bottle combo and it was awesome! There was a cheese that was creamy in texture like brie but for the life of me I cannot remember the name of it.  However, do try this cheese with honey on bread, followed by a sip of the red wine; absoluetly amazing.  (Damn me for liking cheese and fruit so much). The service was great.  They were nice enough to refrigerate a cake my boyfriend had brought from another store and brought it out once we were done with our meal.  I am no wine connoisseur but man that wine went down smooth with little harshness and bite at the end.  Wow wow wow.

Great place for happy hour and small plates.

We also ordered the duck leg confit and the foie gras plate.  Didn't enjoy the bread that the foie gras came on but the foie gras itself was also delicious, especially paired with the fruit puree/jam it was served with, with a slight drizzle of chocolate.  Yummay!

Go go go go go people!

Amelie has a special place in my heart purely because this was where my boyfriend and I had our first date!  We recently "re-did" our first date and started our night off at Amelie.  Similar to the first time we were there, it was fairly crowded in the front part of the bar, and a little more relaxed where the tables were in the back.  It was fairly loud in the place, but somehow, we were still able to have a good conversation.  One of my favorite things about Amelie is the decor.  I love the red bottles up on the wall, and the French quote from Hugo on the ceiling.  The man who took our order may have been on the owners, but whoever he was, seemed like he knew a thing or two about the place.  Greg knows his wines better than I know my own closet, so he had in his mind what were going to get.  When the waiter came by and asked if we wanted any food to share, we asked for a recommendation based on the wine we ordered.   Ultimately, we selected the one of the meat platters with three sides of different cheeses.  The amount of food that came out was impressive, and especially impressive was the amount of bread they serve in those cute/awesome bags.  The quality of the meats, cheese, and spreads was incredible! Interestingly enough, the food came out before the wine did, but once we had both together, it was a really great evening.  We'll be moving to SOMA soon, but I hope that we'll make it back up to Amelie when we're in the area!

I like the place itself. usually have a good time when there. Though, out of my decades going to bars in NY, LA, Milan, Buenos Aires, Paris, Barcelona, etc. etc. I am yet to come across douche bag bouncers like I consistently do at this place. The place will be half empty, 40 min before bartime and the guy will tell me I cant go in to say hello to a friend. Menawhile, while Im waiting there he lets a group of 5 girls walk right in. This heppend to me about 5 times and each time after I talked myself in, the bartenders were cool and they asked me what I wanted to drink. wtf. Really bad customer service that makes me reluctant to head over there after 12a.

1 star for the morons working the door.

I should have known that I'd love a place with the same name as one of my favorite movies!

My friend and I were meeting here at 5:30 on a Friday (right when they opened), but I got there a little early and ran a quick errand and arrived before her at 5:35.  It was already starting to fill up at that time, so I could tell it was really popular.

I sat at the bar and was excited to see such a huge wine list and some great happy hour prices.  Happy Hour is from 5:30-7 and one special is that you can get a flight of any 3 glasses for only $10.  The combinations are endless, but they also have some pre-set flights, so I decided to go with one of those and had the sparkling wine flight, which was a nice start to the evening.

I had another flight later when my friend arrived and this time I went with one of the flights of red.  They were exactly as the bartender described them and exactly what I wanted...fruit forward reds.  The pours were very generous.  In fact, I don't think I've ever had such generous pours!  We also split the mushroom flatbread ($5 for happy hour) and the charcuterie/cheese plate ($20).  Both were delicious and I was so pleased to see such variety on the charcuterie plate.  We really enjoyed it.

They get a shout out for serving bottled water as their standard and not charging for it.  Oh, and they get another shout out for having cute bartenders who all speak French.  (Mind you, I don't speak French, but I dig the accent!)

I'm so glad I finally tried this place and I'll definitely be back.

Once again, not sure why I don't see this as a 4star like most.  Could be because I'm not a wine drinker.

I focus more on how I feel in the environment and the service.  Place is small and crowded.  That usually means people like this spot.  But, I don't see how that can be romantic when I'm trying to hold my drink up and not spill on someone.  Hard to get anywhere to sit.  I was sitting next to a couple cause my group was 3 trying to fit around a table of two.  My friend ordered one drink for me, a Risling.  I'm not a fan, a little toooo sweet though I do like sweet but maybe not for wine.  Then the waiter helped me order the 2nd.  I was hoping it would be good.  It was the opposite of the Risling, but nothing unique.  Coming from someone who doesn't drink wine.  I have to compare this to one bartender at Bubble Lounge who helped me choose a wine, and it was so good.  So, that bartender just got lucky at Bubble Lounge on finding one that I like as wine have different tastes and it's not easy to figure out what someone likes by looking at them.
