Went here with a groupon now deal. We had a nice time and would return. Certainly worth it with the discount. Waitress was very friendly and attentive. Bread was excellent (2 baskets). The bathroom is in the kitchen, which was a little odd if you need to do anything other than wash your hands, but I could see that the kitchen looked clean. Food was fresh and portions were large, though a bit in need of seasoning. The cappuccino was excellent. Only a couple of other tables there, but we didn't mind. Only down side was someone, who I think might be the owner because his photos are on the wall, ate his staff meal in the dining area and proceeded to belch at the end of his meal. Kinda gross. But, otherwise, a good experience.

Let me say that this was one of the worst meals I have ever eaten. I got the veal piccata to get some tips on my own preparation of the dish. Well, the dish came out and I knew it was going to be terrible. You know when you're driving on the expressway and have to swerve around a tractor trailer tire that exploded in the road? The veal looked like that and was probably nowhere near as flavorful as those tire bits. It was over a bed of pasta that was sitting in what can only be described as lemon flavored water. I've never seen a restaurant screw up a dish as simple as veal piccata. Just awful. Do not eat there, even under extreme duress. Seriously.

I would have given this restaurant one star but I had the sweetest, nicest waitress ever....
I can't really complain, though, because I had a groupon ($1 for $20)
I ordered a bowl of lentil soup and meat lasagna. The lentil soup was extremely salty and the meat lasagna barely had any meat and it had very little sauce as well. It was also a relatively small portion....$15 for a small piece of lasagna is a lot!
Although I had really good service, I will not be coming back b/c of the prices and quality of the food. -

Despite the less than favorable reviews here, I decided to try this place out because of a GrouponNow deal. I had a discount on top of my Groupon, so I paid $5 for $20 to this place. Basically I figured, if it really sucks as much as everyone says, I'm out $5 and I have something to bitch about on Yelp. Anyways, that turned out to not be the case.
My friend and I went here for lunch (with our $20 cert). They had a $7.95 lunch buffet advertised on their website (and on a sign outside the place), so we figured that would be pretty cool and within the budget. Get there and the place is pretty small. The buffet wasn't exactly what I had in mind. There were maybe 3 different dishes, soup, and salad. Because none of the dishes appealed to me, I went for the ziti and meatballs for $9.95. My friend still stuck with the buffet.
First thing to come out is the homemade foccacia (spelling?) bread. SOOOOO YUMMY! My friend hit up the buffet and came back with some fancy pasta/chicken dish, which he said was great. When my food came out, it was a HUGE portion, with 5 gigantic delicious meatballs. Definitely un-finishable. If you haven't picked up on this yet, I'm trying to say that the food was awesome.
The place wasn't crowded at all, but we were there in the middle of the day on a weekday. If it was busy, there's no place to wait, so I guess the dinner crowd would have reason to be upset. There were 2 other tables of people there when we were there though, so service was prompt and really friendly.
Also, I think it's safe to say that these people definitely checked out their reviews on Yelp. At the end of the meal, after asking us how everything was, the woman said we should review on Yelp. She wasn't obnoxious about it or anything. I'm only mentioning it because it would seem that they have read the reviews, made changes in response to them, and care about the star rating going up.
Oh, and to top it all off, the meal came to $19.40 - so we wound up owing negative sixty cents for 2 huge and really great meals. She got a good tip :) -

I used to go here years ago, when it was a cute neighborhood place and a great value. The menu was really expansive, the portions were ample enough that you could take half home, and the ambiance was cute.
The ambiance is still cute - but that is all. The menu shows maybe five choices for entree, pasta, pizza, salad, appetizer. The prices are all slightly high for the neighborhood. $10 for a salad is steep. $15 for a pasta entree. And then the portions come and they're super tiny.
My pasta was a hodgepodge of chicken, flavorless sundried tomatoes, not-steamed-long-enough broccoli and homemade pasta. On the whole, no flavor so I had to add a ton of black pepper flakes and craptastic dried parm. My companion had lukewarm cream sauce and ravioli.
I ate 3 pieces of "focaccia" (wasn't) while waiting, finished my whole entree and was hungry about 2 hours later.
I liked the old Amelia's, but I don't know what this place is up the street. Will not return. -

Very surprised by the other reviews. We went here on a whim for a Groupon Now deal. The decor was adorable, the service was friendly (though a bit slow), and the food was wonderful. I highly recommend the chicken parmigiana. I was pleasantly surprised by how large the portions were. Would definitely come again. Great place to bring a date.

If it hadn't been for tonight, I would give four stars. However, after tonight...
We went to Amelia's Kitchen tonight with a friend visiting from Brazil. He's used to eating at about 9:30 or 10 at night; we knew that wouldn't fly on a Tuesday in Somerville, so we went out at 8 instead. Food was fine; service was fine; but they actually began to TURN OUT THE LIGHTS and close up for the night by 9:20 while we were sitting there. I have never felt less welcomed at a restaurant before.
To be fair, I normally like the place. It's near our home, and we have taken other guests there. But after tonight, I am hesitant ever to return. I have been in the food services industry before, and I understand the frustration of a last-minute guest. However... you SUCK IT UP and don't make the guest feel unwelcome.
Unreal. -
Review from Jessie Z.
Dinner friday night - we walk in - there are only about 3 tables seated the rest are open...also there was a movie playing on the overhead projector - kinda cool!
our first thought SCORE!!!! that means the service will be good and we'll be able to eat! woo hoo!
boy, we were wrong...
#1 I ordered the aroncini as an app, my friend ordered the caprese salad. Both don't take that long to make. We waited 45 minutes for them. Shame on us. When it finally arrived at the table (i heard the guy out back yell to the kitchen to cook it about 30 minutes AFTER i ordered it) it was still frozen in the middle. Seriously? who the heck serves frozen food! terrible
#2 Pizza - we ordered a pizza and it cost way more than it was worth. It had potential, but it should have been twice as big for the amount we paid for it.
#3 Service - not sure why this guy was so busy running around but the restaurant has 12 tables, 3 of them were seated sooooo in theory the service should have been excellent. yeah - not so much. I've waited tables, i know how hard it is but 3 tables? come on dude!
In summary - frozen aroncini=FAIL, slow services = FAIL and expensive prices = FAIL.
I'm not going back. -

I have to start by asking, who are the kids on the wall??? We sat right next to a wall with numerous photos of kids in cheesy picture frames.
Secondly, what's up with the pricing? How is every meal within a course the same price? For example, a plain cheese pizza vs. a pizza with steak on it? Or a salad vs. calamari? It was a little weird.
I had the mushroom raviolis which were not too bad. My dude had something that was too bland and soggy for him, and he didn't even finish it (... how can they mess up pasta?).
Our server left in the middle of our dinner and I horrifically ran out of wine in the midst of my meal! Eventually someone from the kitchen came out to give us our check and clear our table. It was also very slow in there. We were the only table and it always appears to be empty in there when I walk by.
Overall, I would not recommend this place, not even as a just try it once type of thing. There are better tasting and serving restaurants nearby. -

Not going back... They were closing up an hour early, should have took a hint. Waiter brought out something completely different from what I ordered, I politely let him know but told him it was fine, ate, paid and left. Checked my bank acct the next day... The waiter charged my credit card 5 times. Simply put, don't go.

I went to Amelia's Kitchen a few years ago and remember it being a nice place for a date but after last nights experience, I will never go there again.
The kitchen was slow, the food was just average, and I ended up getting into an argument with the manager who was a complete ass. He basically said we were liars and when I told him that we had been waiting for almost 40 minutes for our food, he said he has had to wait up to 20 minutes at McDonald's in the past. I'm not really sure where he was going with that statement, but at least the food at McDonald's is warm and worth the price.
Amelia's gets one star because of the manager. -
Review from Kiwi H.
I like that they make a lot of things fresh in here. It's not the best Italian restaurant ever, and there are certainly many others who'd make it higher on my list, but the food is quite tasty depending on what you order. The gnocci was good, and I really liked that the lasagna was quite meaty because I like mine with more meat and less ricotta-stuffing. The pizzas here are good, they are just doughy-enough and lack that cardboard quality, and the toppings are fresh. Otherwise, I wasn't enamored with the other things on their menu, but I'd come back for those dishes or take-out if I were in the area and in the mood for them.
The place is somewhat quiet, and I'm tempted to say it's cozy but it's just not quite there yet. It is cozy in the sense that it feels like a family-run place with home-cooked old style foods, but a few more decorating/warm touches would make it feel more intimate. The staff can be scatterbrained: there's the gruff-love type, the friendlier Italian-caring type, and the blase type. It all depends on who you get, but no major issues with us. -

When there are only two other parties in a restaurant on a Friday night at 7:00, that usually tells you something... I knew what it was telling me, but I didn't care because it was -22 degrees outside and trying another restaurant with a wait seemed like a terrible idea.
So i'm not so sure whether this is a chain or not, but the sign looked familiar and I thought I remembered hearing good things about the place, so we decided to give it a shot. The service was decent, yet kind of awkward at times. Even though we ended up being the only party in the restaurant by the end of our meal, she took forever to bring us the bill. My eggplant was also so chewy and impossible to cut through in some sections.
Will I go back someday? I don't think so. -

Amelia's is close to my office, and in recent days it's been the only semi-decent place open in Teele Square, so twice I've gone there for takeout. It's a nice-looking space, and the servers have been friendly, but service is slow and erratic, and the food quality is mediocre.
My first time, I ordered a veggie panini, and after about a 15-minute wait (mid-afternoon, with no customers), I got a lot of (decent) bread and very little filling, no sides at all, for roughly the same price the now-defunct Teele Square Cafe would've charged for infinitely better food. My second time, I ordered a Caesar wrap with shrimp. Again, it took pretty long, and the wrap was overloaded with dressing and really skimpy on the greens (the shrimp was OK). Without offering any choices, they were making fries for me; when I asked for a substitute, they provided a small amount of tossed greens that weren't bad -- except for the mysterious, wood-like looking object I found in them.
To be honest, I don't get the point of Amelia's. They're middling at best, their prices are on par with much-better places in Davis Square, and their service is flaky. Still beats greasy pizza, but not by a lot. -

Looking at the other reviews it looks like it is a hit or miss here. I definitely got a hit. The waitress was attentive and friendly. I used to live in the North End so I am usually really picky about Italian restaurants, but the Lobster Ravioli was by far the best I have had anywhere in my entire life. Huge, fat raviolis with the most delicious lobster inside, not the usual filler crap mixed in with just the bit sof lobster.

In one word, awful. The place was suffocatingly hot and the veal parmigiana was not only not eatable, but it looked like it would probably be served at an Old Country Buffet. The pasta was soaked in a watery sauce and the veal had a square piece of mozzarella on it and was over cooked to the point where it had no flavor. The only saving grace was that they didn't make me pay for this awful meal.
For 15-20 dollar entrees I would go some place else. -

Decent food. The chicken was a bit dry. Good bread. Friendly, accommodating service.
Was a hectic Saturday night, as only 1 waitress showed up for work. Still, they managed to get our orders (mostly) right. I got fettuccine instead of the penne I asked for. She also took forever to get our drinks and forgot water. But she also was all alone. -

It's a really cute restaurant with a cozy atmosphere--perfect for a date, except the food is really unimpressive. It used to be pretty good about 2.5 years ago when I went with my boyfriend on our first date, and we even joked about naming our first daughter Amelia! Unfortunately, we decided to go again for our anniversary, and the food was incredibly disappointing. My veal was tough and my boyfriend's seafood dish didn't taste 'fresh'. We both felt a bit nauseous after the dinner, because it really was just not good nor fresh. The service was slow (although they were nice and friendly) and it took forever to get our water glasses refilled. Will probably never go again (sad), unless people start to write good reviews.......
P.S. I went to their bathroom, which is located in the back of the restaurant past the kitchen, and their kitchen didn't look very clean. :/ -

I hate to do this based on a server, but take this review for what it is, just my one time experience. It is a cute restaurant. I see it every day on my way home from work. Finally I walk down for dinner on a random week day. First we dont know where to sit, there was only one other table of 4 in there, but the waitress was not attentive. When she did seat us there was a fly buzzing around the window near us. Then she splashed water on my friend. Then she SPILLED the glass of wine my friend ordered (fortuntately she didnt actually get it on her) but needless to say she brought out two free glasses. Then this waitress's daughter came in so she stopped being attentive to the two tables she had to try to convince the chef to give her daughter a job....if she is anything like her mother, I hope he said HELL NO and you're fired for asking me while we are working.
Oh the food. It was fine, I got butternut squash. it tasted like it should. We were done with the bad service so we got our reduced check and got out fast.
I'll update if I am ever forced to go here again. But it was just because of that one lady, the chef was nice and apologized a lot. But still.... -

I thought it was my bad luck .. an anomaly, but after reading other reviews here, it looks like it is a theme. Absolutely horrendous service, with very OK but ridiculously overpriced food.
On a Friday evening for dinner ..
time to be seated - 10 seconds (nice!)
time until drink orders taken - only 15 mins (we had to call the waitress and ask her to take our order)
time for entrees to be served - only 35 mins (it wasn't particularly busy and 2 tables who had ordered food after us were served before us)
time to eat (the decent pizza & very so-so pasta)- 20 mins
time to request check after meal - 15 mins (I had to walk over and ask the waitress for the check)
time to request check for the 2nd time - 15 mins (this time I went in and asked the cook since the waitress was by far the worst I've ever seen)
I"m amazed the place is still doing business (too many unsuspecting visitors like myself I guess!) -

For appetizers, we tried the fried ravioli. I'm not usually a fan anyway, but this was a rather boring version of ricotta cheese in a crusty shell with tomato soup, or was that supposed to be sauce?, for dipping. Cumbersome to eat, I wouldn't recommend this for the dainty.
My friend had the seafood pasta, which was decent enough, although they had run out of squid on a Monday night. Understandable as most all restaurants receive their seafood deliveries on Tuesdays and Fridays, but still upsetting.
The worst was the mushroom risotto I ordered. UGH! the taste itself was fine, but the presentation was TERRIBLE. It looked like regurgitated oatmeal slapped onto a square piece of tile.
People! At least put it in a bowl with a sprig of parsley! come on, Plating 101....
Once again, a cute and friendly Italian waitress fails to make up for poor kitchen work. -

Oh dear... i decided to go because i wanted a restaurant i could walk to and this one seems to get fairly good reviews. but can't say i will be walking there again!
food is incredibly boring. i had the arancini - the most bland tomato sauce ever - it was fresh, but try making it taste like more than crushed tomatoes grown at the end of winter in a greenhouse!
i had gnocchi for my main meal. the texture of the gnocchi was good but i should have changed my meal as it was also in the same bland tomato sauce. there was supposed to be some fresh basil but i think they forgot.
the atmosphere is very cute so it's too bad i won't be returning. -

The food is pretty darn good here. I've never come away from this place wanting more--I'm always full. Their menu doesn't change much throughout the year, but what's on it is good. The place is cozy, warm...great for small groups or just for two. It's well-lit and cutely decorated--very homey.
The only thing keeping Amelia's Kitchen from 5 stars is their inconsistent service. I've been there on good nights when the food is fast, hot, and tasty and my server is attentive enough to keep my water glass filled the whole time. But I've also been there on nights when I've waited 40 minutes between ordering and receiving my calamari appetizer (at the same time as my entree). In fact, the service can be so bad that it can really overtake all of the positive aspects of this place and leave you with a distaste (so to speak) for Amelia's Kitchen...hence, the 2 stars down instead of just one.
Bottom line: Order out. It's great food, and I know ordering Italian isn't the same as dining in, but it's got to be better than what you might get. -

I really wanted to like this place. An small, Italian kitchen, so close to home, seemed like my type of place.
We went here for dinner on a Saturday night earlier this spring, and the relatively crowded dining room seemed to bode well. The service was fine, nothing to memorable and not as negative as other yelpers have experienced. The bread basket was OK at best, again, not memorable.
That's when things really went down hill. For dinner I ordered the gnocchi in what was supposed to be a robust tomato sauce. It literally had NO taste. Had it been horrible, I at least would have been able to describe it. But it was perhaps the most bland, tasteless dish I have ever had in my entire life. The gf ordered a seafood dish and was similarly offended by the tasteless fare.
Very disappointing experience, but I suppose if I had heeded the warnings of reviewers here, I should have known what was coming. -

What mind-bogglingly bad service! It's rather stunning that they've stayed in business for 15 years.. Not even in desperation would I recommend this place to someone. Not unless the staff seriously change their approach and standards of service.
I stumbled in last weekend, in a ravenously sad daze upon learning the tragic news that the Teele Sq. Cafe had closed. My partner and I were enticed by a sign outside proudly announcing that they now served brunch. Thinking this was an established Italian restaurant that is known to serve decent pizza, we thought we'd give it a try. Besides, how can you mess up basic brunch food?
I'll tell you how, and this is just how Amelia's did it: 1. Be v-e-r-y slow. As in, don't serve any food for over 30 minutes (I'm serious); 2. Be completely inattentive, and fail to offer any explanation as to why a simple omelette and fried egg dish would possibly take more than 1/2 hour, when there are only two guests in the restaurant. When asked about the delay (after 25 minutes), act annoyed; 3. Serve the wrong and unappetizing food, also without explanation. On a menu with just 5-6 options, you could at least attempt to get two of them right.
Shame on you, Amelia's. Maybe this is a decent place for dinner, but I'll never find out, nor do I care. There are just too many other more worthy places in Medford, Somerville and Cambridge to spend your time and money. -

oh, this place was so disappointing! I went there with a couple friends because I had one of those http://restaurant.com gift certificates. After looking at the prices we figured it would be an affordable way to spluge, as it were.
We got toasted ravioli as an appetizer. It was lukewarm, and the sauce with it seriously seemed canned.
My dinner, the pesto penne, was not hot enough and lacking in flavor. And what kind of Italian place has fake Kraft parmesan?
We came to the consensus that the food was the kind of thing that your friend who can't cook makes when s/he wants to go all out and impress you. It's edible when free but quite a downer when it's $14. For those prices, I had much higher expectations. -

While other great places close, this place stays open. There must be a mafia connection or something.
Food is so-so...you can make it in your own kitchen just as easily.
Service? They bring you the food and ignore you until you ask for the check. Literally ignore you, no more water, hope you like the food, because they won't inquire and if you ask for something simple on the side, forget about it.
Neither of these would be a problem if it weren't for The Prices. Why does this cost this much? It really is a crime (an organized crime?). If you are yearning for Italian in the Davis area, just go down to Davis Sq and anything there will be better.
If you're starving, it's never crowded; however if you're in a rush, low numbers of other diners do not correlate with quicker/more attentive service. -

I've been to Amelia's several times for lunch and it's the food and pricing that made me keep going back. The last visit was the last time I'll go. Every time I've been there, there was new waitstaff. The food took FOREVER to come out - we waited 45mins for our sandwiches! Should have just left but we were super hungry. They waiter neglected to give the table behind us their menus and they ordered significantly after us, yet they got their food before us. Seems the chef forgot to make our food... Sorry not going back again.

I haven't stepped inside Amelia's in five or ten or fifteen years. (Memory doesn't serve.) And aside from Rudy's, which I'll have to review some other time, I am hard-pressed to think of a longer-lived institution in the greater Teele Square area. Which probably means they're doing something right. So why should I suddenly get up out of bed to write it a one-star review when I haven't been there since before my kids were born?
I'll tell you why. The last time I went to Amelia's, I ordered a (!) sandwich. I waited half an hour. No sandwich. I made inquiries. The sandwich is coming. Time passed and still no sandwich. I explained to the sandwich-making professionals on staff that, despite appearances, I do in fact have a life. The sandwich is imminent, I was assured. Yet no sandwich ever emerged. I left sandwichless.
For years I fumed about that forsaken sandwich. People said to me, "Hey, Eric, come to Amelia's with us! We're getting sandwiches!"
"No!" I always answered. "II'll never step inside that hive again," I vowed. My ex-wife called me childish to act that way. Perhaps. But it's easier to act mature if you've enjoyed a nice sandwich.
Things might have worked out differently had someone working there that day said to me, even insincerely, even somewhat condescendingly, Sir, we are so very sorry to be unable to provide you with the sandwich that we promised you. But no one ever said anything. They just kept arching their eyebrows like I didn't deserve an Amelia's sandwich.
Anyway, just now, as I was crawling into bed, it occurred to me from out of nowhere that I could finally get even. So here's one star to you, Amelia's kitchen. Stick that up your crusty loaf. -

I was told "don't go there it is awful", well I should have yelped first. I am so sorry I didn't. I watched in horror as the owner berated a customer for asking for change. The man had paid $40 on a $20 bill and was asking for $10 back, what gives that is a $10 tip, that is 50%. I should have run, since I usually only leave 20% up to 25% if the place is really good. It was not good, I was only sorry Victor's deli was not open, dam I should have run. The guy even watched one of my friends walk to the bathroom with a lets say unprofessional appreciation for her ass. This place has an OK decor, food was less than thrilling (My Asian mother makes better Italian sauce) and to put it simply DON'T GO.

Wow, what an awful sandwich. I was hoping for the Teele Square Cafe but it's gone, so I ran into Amelia's to grab lunch on the go. I was the only customer (yes, a bad sign) and I ordered the first chicken wrap that didn't look greasy. The chicken strips were rubbery and suspiciously the same size (frozen Costco meat?) the spinach had been sauteed so it was drippy not crisp, and the tortilla tasted like glue. No napkin in the bag, either, so I ended up wearing some of that spinach juice to my appointment (grr). All in all, very disappointing. I had a few bites only, went hungry, and grabbed a very late bite at Sherman's instead. Teele Square Cafe, I miss you already.

I formerly dated a man who hated Italian food and, every time the subject of Italian cooking (I am a superb crafter of Northern Italian food) came up, he launched into a tiresome tirade about only-needing-two-pans-one-for-sauce-one-for-pasta. I went here by myself and then returned with my son. This restaurant elevates the much-needed-in-America neighborhood restaurant to new heights. Yes, it is a store front, but, so what? Somerville is a store front sort of town where many folks with sophisticated palates come to eat. This is wonderful food, fresh and vibrant.

my friend and i went to amelia's cause well, we haven't been there and were looking to try out some place new. the bread was good, but the oil, was just oil. nothing accompanied it. which is a bummer. i got the salmon plate with risotto which was pretty good. the risotto seemed a bit TOO buttery for my taste, but it was tolerable. my friend got the lasagna. i had a couple bites from it. it was pretty good, but definitely wasn't the best that i've had. the service was good. nothing out of the ordinary.

We decided to go to this restaurant today because all the other restaurants around seemed to be in closed... on a Monday afternoon (out for lunch, maybe? I'm not from this area, so maybe it was because of something I didn't know, but it was still weird to me). Actually, I was convinced this was going to be a great restaurant because of all the "Zagat rated" stickers posted up on the front door - not completely sure what that means, but I assumed that it meant that it was a good restaurant (haha).
I walk in, and one of the first things I notice was that it was HOT. It was about 80? degrees this afternoon, and I had just come back from walking around a college campus so I was looking for some A/C. Apparently the A/C wasn't even on in the restaurant... a man had to tell the waitress to turn the A/C on. Next thing I notice is that there were about 6 tables out of the 10? tables occupied, but maybe only 1 table had their food served already. Anyway, so after we enter the restaurant, we just stood there awkwardly for the longest 30 seconds, waiting for someone to come over... I thought maybe it was one of those restaurants where you sit yourself down, so I sat at the closest vacant table with my family and grabbed a few menus from a podium stashed behind my seat. We took about 5 minutes looking for something to eat until the waitress hurriedly came up to us and said, "Oh" as if she never noticed us enter, then gave us different menus because apparently we had grabbed the wrong ones.
There was only one waitress and I assume one chef, so no one was getting their food on time. A family who had come after us had gotten their bread before we did - it was just the bread that everyone was supposed to get, but it took what felt like 20 minutes before we got our bread. Our main course took a VERY long time to come, and although it was delicious (I'm not that picky), it would have taken a much shorter time in other restaurants.
I probably would give this place 2 stars, but the food wasn't bad, and the restaurant seemed nice and cozy. The restaurant is now hiring, so I'm thinking they SHOULD improve once they get more servers (and hopefully chefs). -

I went to Amelia's kitchen for Saturday Brunch. I can't say enough bad things about it. Do not dine here. If I could possibly give this place zero stars I would. The servers were not attentive. We went at least 10 minutes without water. I was served 'italian' toast with no accompaniments (butter, syrup). Coffee was served with no sweeteners or cream, we had to request all of these things. The servings were scarce (once slice of 'italian toast' served with a couple slices of fruit). I was extremely disappointed. I was hoping for so much more from this place. I definitely will not return.

I've had some meals I've really enjoyed here as well as some that have just been ok. The deserts have always been good. Its family run and the staff is very friendly. The tables are fairly tightly packed, but it gives a feel of eating with friends at your mom's house.
