The best time I think to go to movies... early SUNDAY!!!

It's cost only $5 -- what a deal for a new release.  Not much to say since there's a couple people reviewed already which I totally agree but the only I have to say......WHEN DID THEY STOP MAKING POPCORN?!

Now the popcorn is coming out the back (more likely from previous day) and getting poured in.  Whatever happen to the fresh stuff; I guess you only get fresh popcorn when you pay $10.  I guess I'll be eating day old popcorn or seeking goodies in my purse again.  :)

AMC Star has apparently fallen far from its mystical pedestal that once elevated it to the likes of Star John R or Palladium. I have only seen it in its current state, as a dirty, degenerate slacker with no greater ambition than to munch on popcorn and watch "Mission Impossible 4" or "The Hangover: Yet Again" for the rest of its life being forcibly yanked up by its bootstraps.  I don't know what this theatre was like as a fresh-faced teen, full of hope and polished sparkle, because I've caught it in premature midlife crisis. The slide into pudgy, greasy middle age was well on its way until therapy stepped in.

The entire theatre has an attitude readjustment in progress, notably by the quality age curfew put in place to stop scads of unruly teenagers from clogging up the place. Nothing much ruins an experience at a cinema for me than hooligans who act like it's their damned bedroom rather than a public venue, and moreover, one we all paid to get into. Well done, Star, for having a brave stance to avoid the sad decline that so often comes when staff and patrons just stop giving a damn. Having low expectations breeds low standards, so getting around that is a plus.

Concession here is still painfully pokey compared to other cinemas I've been to. Why is this such a persistent problem around AMCs and such? You'd think with a counter the size of Woodward Avenue, they could move more than two people at a time. I loathe waiting in line for overpriced popcorn and a bathtub of pop that probably cost more than my bathroom reno. At least make me feel like the money spent (stolen, pillaged, looted) is worth spending? I don't really bother buying food there, preferring to bring my own snacks -- at Target, they're a buck for a box of candy, or I can pick up something a whole lot healthier for myself.

Ticket prices, though, are a bit of a steal. $5 for a weekday movie is all right by me. With stiff competition from Netflix and Redford Theatre (there's a gem!), they need to remain competitive and I'm all for that. Besides, the seats are more comfy than a number of other theatres with the plus that their surround sound beats mine and John R's. I want a damned headrest.

I see signs of the disrepair, but it seems to be getting better.

Ahhh, Star Southfield. My weekday escape. Those days when I have extra time, $5 burning a hole in my wallet and a movie I heard was good on twitter; this is where i'm at.
Seriously, you can get tickets (just like Nikki said) for $5 bucks, all day long, Monday thru Thursday!
    *gasp*
Plus there is an enforced curfew towards those underage!
    *gasp*
Sorry teens, you and your peers annoy me to no end. When watching a movie, I don't care to hear how your date stood you up because he/she was on punishment.
I can't really comment on the popcorn/snacks because I refuse to purchase those overpriced items any longer. I will say they smell like every other movie theater snacks.

Random, do anyone ever see those concession stands beyond the ticket-ripper person actually open??

I remember when this theater first opened. Everyone was so excited, the ground sparkled, and it was one of the first stadium style theaters of its kind. Well of course a lot of teenagers wanted to come and hang out here and an age code was put into effect. Once they got that under control, the Star regained its luster. As Nikki W. tells it, you can go during the week (Mon-Thurs) for only $5. Where else can you do that inside such a beautiful theater? I recently watched Salt there, it was nice and quiet.

The concession stand offers a wide variety of treats and you can use your AMC rewards card as well. Take the kids, or just go alone to catch a new flick!

Visited on Sunday, January 10, 2010 to see "Leap Year". (Great movie, btw.)

Walking into this place feels like a whole new world. It pretty much gigantic. Wide open, spacious and well maintained. The ticket sales person was courteous, the seats were comfy and of the rocking variety (my personal favorite). Tickets were $10 on Sunday. Little pricey, but not unexpected. Would definitely go back again.

The closest theater to my house, I go to Star Southfield more than any other movie. It has gotten extremely better than it used to be when I was younger. They have become more strict about kids roaming around the theater as a hang out spot. Within the past month, I have been four times and I definitely appreciate the fact that the lines are shorter and the service is much better.

This movie theater holds any hot new movie that is out. There are 20 screens (hence the name), so you can almost always go there at any hour and be ready to watch a movie. I can definitely appreciate the comfortable rocking chairs. Inside the building they also have a sandwich shop and there used to be a club but as of last week I noticed it was shut down. Either way,  go to this theater if you are in the area.

i'm giving star southfield five stars because of the massive glistening, twinkling, sparkling sidewalk leading up to the entrance. every time i go to see a movie there i become enraptured with the glimmer that grows alive beneath my feet. something about this shimmer reminds me of old hollywood- a time when going to the movies was considered a glamorous night out. my imagination transcends to the days when people wore their sunday finest to see their heroes on the sliver screen- then i look up into a sea of baggy sweatpants, unapologetic velour, crocs, trucker hats & muffin tops and reality hits me like a ton of bricks.

    *sigh*

those sparkles still make me inexplicably happy, if only for a fleeting moment.

everything about this complex is massive. from the theaters, the plush stadium seating, the crowds, to the concession stand the size of a football field- it's all big. i'd even venture to say i could jog a quarter mile in the women's restroom. if mcdonald's could 'super-size' your movie experience, star southfield would still be bigger. they have awesome smoothies here as well- i could suck down the strawberry banana variety faster than you can say brain freeze.

the $5 deal monday-thrusday is also glorious. $5 from open til close? you can't beat that. even though my AARP membership is 40+ years away, this special pricing makes me look forward to the delights that await. as long as i'm acting like a grandma, i'll also mention that they have ample parking so finding a space for the 'ole buick is never a problem. i'm kidding. i don't drive a buick...anymore.

this particular theater also holds a special place in my heart because of the artist we all know and love by the name of LL Cool J. that's right, ladies love cool james. in the late 90s i went to see some crappy remake of an old horror film called Halloween H20. the film starred jamie lee curtis, josh hartnett and our dear friend LL. midway through the movie LL Cool J's character murders some dude on screen- consequently a gentleman a few rows in front of me literally stood on his seat so he towered over the audience. all of sudden he screams "MAMA SAID KNOCK YOU OUT, BOOOOOOOY!!" uproarious laughter ensued. nearly all of the sold-out audience in its entirety gave him a standing ovation. quite possibly one of the greatest moments in cinematic history.

I remember when this place first opened.  It was a far better alternative to the Star John-R, and there was tons of well-deserved fanfare.  When I was last there - maybe 2 years ago - it was a nightmare.  The theater was dirty, the concession staff moved slower than slow, and it felt like being at some out of control daycare.  Well, per Christmas tradition, I had to see a movie today, and ended up here.  It was deja-vu.

Matinee shows are $5 per person. You can't beat that when some theaters are charging over $10.

It's a far cry from when it first opened but overall it's still a very nice theater. What I have come to enjoy most about the Star Theater is the price reduction during the week. Everyone knows that going to the movies can be really expensive especially if you have kids. Monday through Thursday sings a different tune. It's just $5 per person all day! Free popcorn and refills on Wednesday as well! And if you want to catch a movie the day it debuts just go before noon and you'll still just pay $5! It's a large theater that has 20 screens, automated ticket machines, an arcade and about 10 ordering stations for snacks. The lines aren't too long and the facility is pretty clean. You won't be disappointed!

Unless it has radically improved, we would never go there again. The last time we went there there were noisy children in adult movies, the hallways smelled of urine and the service was terrible. It is a disappointment because Southfield is the half way point between the homes of myself and my friend. We go to a movie weekly. But we would both prefer to drive futher to have a pleasant experience. Now I must say, it has been quite a while since we were there. Perhaps they have improved.  But the last three times, it just got progressively worse.  I won't be giving them any more chances.
