Review from Patty J.
San Mateo, CA
Definitely have mixed feelings about this AMC location. We only go for IMAX movies, which are amazing in their IMAX theater. I just can't get enough of their intro with the drums and lights! Yes, it is expensive, but worth it when the movies are filmed in IMAX, like MI: Ghost Protocol
Here it goes: I've had MANY positive experiences at this theater however, I still can't shake it out of my memory one bad experience. During the movie, someone or some people began to smoke marijuana. I was disturbed to say the least. In addition, there were two specks on the screen for more than half of the movie and people would laugh when the specks were on someones nose, etc.
When the movie ended, I spoke with customer service, they apologized, refunded us and credited us with two movie tickets for a future date. I was very pleased at the actions of AMC.
On a more positive note, it appears that the Metreon is getting a face lift and I am looking forward to see what an impact it will make on the theater. The AMC stub rewards is a very enticing program that I've joined. You get rewards back when you spend $100 and free concession upgrades. I now go to AMC more than Century/Cinemark because of this! -

Just tried to go see Cabin in the Woods. They wanted to charge me $33 for two tickets, cuz the film was in some room that had some shit called ETX. Hell no! I'll go somewhere else.
Plus, one time, some security guard snuck up on us and snatched our beers. And we were being reasonable and discreet. -

Not the Metreon we used to love and adore...it's like a faded, very used and strung out version that we're embarrassed to hang out with.
I still love the IMAX theater, but I would rather head across the street to see a movie at the Westfield.
Maybe they'll give this place some love and attention once the Target opens... -

I must say this is a pretty nice theater .. with the whole new food court they are building there now it makes it even better ... its clean and the employees have never given me a bad experience ... they have lots of screens as well as 3D and IMAX movies and the seats are kinda comfy as well ... Its an even better perk being i only live a couple blocks away so its always fun to be able to walk to a showing ... all in all I can say I am a fan .. and of course I will be back ...

The movie theaters is several stories high in which you must take several escalators to reach your destination. Reminds me of the theaters in New York. Seats were nice and clean, large screen. Concession stand has a huge artwork atop.

This is a terrible theatre and I will never go again. The rows are so close together, worse than the worst economy class airline, that you constantly get your knees bashed and bruised by the seat in front. Time for the wrecking ball....

IMAX or die trying.
The layout as everyone else says is confusing, but if you're coming to the Metreon, you usually just have a handful of reasons to: an awesome conference like GDC is there or a movie. Maybe Cako's or some of the unfortunate restaurant businesses that decided to set up shop here, but I digress.
I will continually try to undercut your prices through Costco or daily deal tickets (yeah, take that passive aggressive counter). -

This is a pretty decent theater. It's located in the heart of San Francisco and close to many dining options. It's also got good movies. It's also got comfy seats and occasionally dirty theaters.
While it is nice and convenient while I'm visiting a friend in the city, the layout of this place bugs me. You purchase your tickets on the main floor of the Metreon and go up a few floors to the theater. This trip is longer than at other movie theaters. If you're on time or early for a movie, this isn't that bad, but if you're running late and expecting a shorter walk from the box office to the theater, then you may end up walking in late, when the lights have gone down and you can't see much of anything. The rows are also really close together, so there isn't much legroom. At one showing, the seat of the person in front of me was pretty much hitting my knees. The seating area also isn't as steep as in other theaters. Being a short person, I dread theaters like this because my view of the screen can easily be blocked.
But other than that, this is a decent theater and is convenient. -

It's hard to find your way up here sometimes because of the convoluted set up of the Metreon and how many levels and concession stands (some of which are perpetually closed) there are. Nonetheless the theaters and movie selections are what you would expect and taking a break in the arcade isn't bad either. I would have liked for the popcorn to be a little warmer though.

Meh. That's all I can muster for the Metreon 16.
Pros:
- The location is prime, which probably explains the lines and crowds.
- They have enough screens that there are plenty of times to choose from.
Cons:
- The prices are predictably high. The Cinemark across the street has a student discount, but not the AMC. Costco sells discount tickets, but I'll pay $3 extra to avoid the hell that is Costco (though I should stock up, I suppose).
- The layout is confusing. TIckets on ground floor, up to the theaters, but too far up and you've gone too far. Maybe it will be better when the renovations on the building are complete.
- The SEATS. They feel like economy class airline seats. The person in front of you is all up on your knees if you're a tall dude or lady.
Every tween in SF is also at the Metreon on the weekends. If I wanted to be reminded that there are actually children in this area, I'd have gone to the theaters in the East Bay or South Bay. -

My son turned 11 and went here for his birthday We always loved this place until may17th !!! Took my children to their first iMAX Film that was very very expensive but for the sake of his bday I didnt care...while the movie was playin i took a few pics of him earlier and for got to turn of the sound off my phone because I posted some to my Face Book.and didn't want the sound to distract others ...as I was doing that The "manger" came over to me I guess and thought I was recording... I told him no he says it looks like you are "TURN OFF THE PHONE" as if I was a child he was speaking to!!!! I was very uncomfortable!!!!! 30 mins after the incident I grabbed my kids and got my money back and left !!!!

I grow increasongly dissappionted in the Metreon. The concession system needs work. The compartmentalized mentality isnt efficient, to the piont that you clearly see they don't care.
If u cant train staff to pour yogurt and bag popcorn during same transaction--- your systems flow is off. Askign people to stand in lines twice - it counter productive. I'm thinking that If they can't fix a significant money generator. Its not worth going when SFhas several other options for films -

Today was the first day of Metreon's renovated food court area. Plenty of dining spaces. Love the new dining nooks. http://s3-media2.ak.ye... Same type of chairs as Westfield's SF Centre gourmet food court (aka. Food Emporium). Only Sanraku, Buckhorn Grill and Jillian's opened today. The 16 other food places will open in a few days, weeks and months (Spring & Summer). I'll post reviews for those places separately.
The main entrance is now on the 4th street side. http://s3-media2.ak.ye... The corner will be the Target store entrance, opening in October 2012.
All areas look bright and are well illuminated. The new AMC ticket counter looks like an airport terminal. http://s3-media1.ak.ye... There are 4 self-service automated ticket machines on the left side.
The 2 elevators are now closer to the ticket counter, or take the new set of escalators going to the 3rd floor. http://s3-media1.ak.ye...
And best of all, there's FREE WiFi (includes areas of Yerba Buena park).1 Previous Review: Show all »

Went to see Avengers today with some friends. Great Movie and highly recommend going to see. Make sure you stay all the way til the last credit is rolled. Some of the people this morning didn't see the final scene. Won't spoil it for you. I believe that Marvel and Disney have just created a new dynasty. They are going to make a killing with this movie and there will be sequels I can guarantee. So for all you Marvel and comic fans out there, you will love this movie.

Metreon trips began in elementary school. The word was that SF finally had a "good" place to watch a movie. Lo and behold the Metreon is nothing but another one stop SF location offering overpriced services.
It can't be stopped. This shit is like clockwork in the city.
Everything becomes a commodity. There's one DMV. There's one Bourbon and Branch. Brunch is cool to do so every restaurant is packed at 11pm. And of course, there's that one theater in the heart of the city that doesn't show porn. Let's all go there.
I'm exaggerating but this whole expensive and exclusive shit is what makes the EB seem like God's Land.Listed in: Let's go to the movies!

The theater renovations are now complete (though the food court renovations are still a couple months away from being done).
They've added some self-service ticket kiosks, similar to airline check-in units. Even on a busy evening though, the line for the regular ticket counter moves pretty quickly.
Unfortunately the ticket counter is placed in such a way that they only have room for about 4 movie posters before you buy your ticket. If you haven't been in a while, that may not be enough to judge what you're going to like. (When you get upstairs, the area around the theaters has around 70 posters... so you'll get plenty of ideas for future trips).
Theaters are all upstairs, so an elevator or escalator awaits you. Couple pretty large concession stands upstairs before you turn in your ticket, plus some amazing views of the park below out the giant picture windows. After the ticket taker, there are more concession stands (since after all, that's how they make their money). Concession prices are ridiculous. But that's to be expected.
I've been in two of the theaters. Theater 7 and Theater 15. 7 was more intimate, and had seats all the way to the back wall. Theater 15 was weird. The wheelchair seating was all the way at the top, with a walkway behind it. Seems like a dumb design, since an elderly person in a wheelchair may want to be closer to the screen to see better.
Staff is fairly friendly. But there's nothing that really stands out here. The experience will probably be improved once the food court is open, since then you can eat a real meal for the same price as what you would pay for a popcorn, candy, and drink. -

A very nice place to see a movie in downtown SF. It's a short walk from the Montgomery BART Station. I go here during the week. So it's not very crowded and I have no complaints at all.

Wow. This theatre complex has gone completely downhill...and SO quickly! All of the stores (ie, the Sony store) that used to be here are now shut down. So there's nothing to do to kill time; it's now just the theatre.
Things that are just basic elements of other AMC theatres don't exist here. How can there be no assigned-seating options when you buy your tickets?! It's San Francisco....the high-tech capital of the world! So, instead you still have wait in line outside the auditorium like back in the dark ages. Such a waste of time. Overall, the place just feels dated.
I will say this, however. I was here to see MI:4 in IMAX and the auditorium was pretty packed. Shortly before the screening started, someone got on the loudspeaker and asked everyone to move towards the middle of their respective row so that latecomers could find seats on the edges. And, shockingly, everyone complied without argument. Very cool, San Francisco. Way to be neighborly! -

Saw Mi4 here on the IMAX. great place to watch IMAX on a huge screen from what's limited here in the Bay Area (what gives there's only two ) Great place to watch IMAX, but not sure about regular movies.
The concessions should be inside the theater so I don't need to pull out my ticket over and over to get a drink or snack only bad perk and could get a bit lost since the ticket purchase line is downstairs for a first timer. -
Review from Jon T.
I'm very tempted to go meh on this movie theater. It's true it's got a great location and comfortable seating, but it doesn't really have any personality. To me, it looks like dozens of theaters I've been to in other cities.
If I have a choice, I'll always choose the westfield or van ness theaters. Westfield is pretty boring too, but I often find that it's much less crowded than metreon. Van Ness, on the other hand, has one of the coolest lobby's I've seen at a big-box movie theater.
Unfortunately, both of those theaters don't seem to play movies very late. So I will go to metreon sometimes, but begrudgingly. -

Review from Grace C.
My only gripe is the parking situation. Paying to park in a garage is pretty much a must -- there's very little street parking within walking distance... but J and I got lucky on a Sunday morning & found free street parking (normally metered) within 3 blocks.
We had a pleasant experience here watching an IMAX movie. Bought Fandango tickets online, had no trouble getting the showing we wanted. The theater seemed clean & modern enough, and the restrooms were also clean.
IMAX was kind of neat, but in the future I wouldn't pay extra money for it.
Probably won't be back to this location because the hassle of parking & the drive from Oakland just isn't really worth it. -

Seeing Puss-n-boots with my little one in 3-D at the IMAX this weekend was wonderful.
However, the theater is under construction and things seem to be changing a lot at this venue. -

- Phenomenally located 1 block from Powell MUNI and BART stations -- avoid driving if you can, or give yourself time to scrimmage for parking around and about, or, cough up the ludicrous $12-ish for parking in the structure across (not validated by Metreon!)
- AMAZINGLY IMPRESSIVE imax screen (painfully priced)
- Good concession stand w/healthy alternatives like fro-yo now too!
- Comfy seats =)
Don't understand why their interior has changed more than I've switched apartments in the last decade (I've moved 8 times =/), and somewhat irritated/excited that Target will be coming shortly-ish. Conflicted, sigh.
Would rather support the smaller local theatres if and whenever possible, but action-movies here are a must on imax/3D.
Minus 1-star for only showing "top 40"/blockbuster type movies & not many (any?) indie and/or international flicks. -

Ok, I remember "The Metreon" when there were a bunch of cool shops, but now it's kinda like a ghost retailer... except for the cinema and a few eats. I like that I can always find good seats here, but I'm a mid-week movie dude and I tend to head for the matinee if possible, so that might be part of my luck... seats are comfortable and sound and overall quality is good. Comfortable and convenient for being right in the heart of the city.
No real lines unless you're waiting for the new Twilight. Shhh. -
Review from Bennett W.
San Francisco, CA
The first time I've came here was in 1998 or 1999! This place has gone thru a lot of changes over the last decade. I do remember that there used to be an arcade on the second floor, but the space which the arcade occupied is now empty. Seems like they really are going to build a new Target Department Store there. Estimated opening date - Spring 2012! Now, Target opening a store here in San Francisco? Sounds like a good thing since they already have a location in Colma, Daly City (Serramonte) and San Bruno (Tanforan)!
Other than that, there is a mini arcade on the third floor where the AMC theaters are. The concession stand has expanded the food and beverage items on the menu! Today, I saw The Muppets and it is another one of my favorite movies for 2011!Listed in: Movie Theatres

Why am I reviewing another theater you ask?
-Is it because of some mind-blowing experience I had at this location? No.
-Is it because of some god awful service that I encountered here?
Also no.
-Is it because I met my soulmate here while simultaneously bumping into a random stranger who gave me a million dollars for saving his life during a heart attack?
HAHAHA...no.
Alas folks, the real reason I'm reviewing this place is because I checked in here ONCE on my Yelp app and now Yelp won't stop reminding me to write a review about this place!
I've come here on several occasions to watch movies. The most recent (not necessarily in this order) being: Conan the Barbarian in 3D, Inception, and The Debt. And I have to say, this place is quite a farcry from its glory days. Anyone else still remember the Sony store here? Or the Airtight Garage? Or all the other stores that use to be open here? Well if you still do, all that is gone. The only thing left here now is the AMC Metreon theater and some restaurant named Jillians. With Target expected to move in sometime in 2012. Foot traffic as well, needless to say, has also died down substantially from those early heydays. Hopefully the introduction of Target next year will help revitalize this dying behemoth of a "mall".
The theater itself is located on the second floor with both escalator, stair, and elevator access for the truly lazy (there seems to be a lot) or handicapped. With the ticket booths located on the 1st floor. While prices for snacks are just as steep as all the other theaters, this one is nice in that they have the butter machine on the outside. So if you want extra butter on your popcorn, you can add it to your heart's content.
Ironically in all my 29yrs of existence, I have never seen an IMAX movie. So I can't comment on the whole IMAX experience. But the theater rooms in general are fairly clean and well maintained. And this place is definitely a lot less crowded than many other theaters I usually frequent. I would definitely come here more often if it wasn't all the way in downtown SF and the parking situation wasn't so atrocious.
ps - if you do plan on parking here though, street parking is near impossible. And 5th and Mission garage just plain sucks. Save yourself the headache and a little money by parking in the Ellis O' Farrel garage about 3-4 blocks away. The cost maxes out at $10 and they are open really late. -
Review from Julia P.
Once upon a time, the Metreon was suppose to be the glorious and regal beacon of all Sony represented.
Alas, it failed and now it's a movie theater with vast empty spaces waiting to be rented out and a soon to be super Target.
Even so, I've enjoyed watching movies here. The only reason I would come here is either because I was going to be in the Union Square area already or I was using Fandango coupons for free movies. Since those ran out, I haven't been back since.
Pros: Great screens, many movies being played.
Cons: Parking and driving in this area is a pain. Riding the 38 Geary is a pain. Coming out of the movie theater at night around 11 pm after places have closed may not be a pain but it's somewhat daunting if you came by yourself and have to go back to the car by yourself...never had problems thus far. -
Review from Rahul P.
San Francisco, CA
Right in the heart of downtown and conveniently located near union square. Perfect place to watch movies after shopping or dining on the city. The screening rooms are clean and well maintained and this place also has the only imax in san francisco.
Try taking public transportation as parking is a hassle although there's paid parking across the theater. -
Review from Tom M.
Philadelphia, PA
It's a functional movie theatre/AMC plexamania. It's location is convenient and "serves its purpose" of showing movies.
You really can't blame the theatre itself for some of the neanderthals who attend movies now-a-days. I've been in cinemas on both coasts and in Canada, with the changes going on with presentation ( changes to digital), the shoestring staff does its best. But if the patrons are going to act selfishly, its not the theaters fault are it.
At least at a show before Noon, the AMC is a bit inexpensive. -
Review from Kris L.
So disappointed! This theater used to be THE go-to spot. For one thing, almost everything at the Metreon is closed and boarded up and they're doing construction for Target, which is moving in on the ground floor.
A and I drove down here this past Friday to watch Immortals. We got there early because it was opening day and weren't sure how the crowds would be. Got our tickets for the 11:30am 3D showing and got awesomey awesome seats. We sit throught the pre-preview stuff and then 30 minutes of previews. Seriously, 30 minutes.
And then the movie starts. I haven't put on my 3D glasses yet. Don't they usually tell you when to put on your 3D glasses? The movie looks perfectly fine without the 3D glasses.
Wait a minute. Are we in the right theater? THE MOVIE ISN'T IN 3D!
We look around. Half the people are sitting there with their 3D glasses on. Don't they know the movie isn't supposed to be all funny colored? When you're watching a 3D movie with 3D glasses, everything is supposed to be clear. And 3D!
So what did we do? We got up and left - went to the customer service desk and asked for our money back.
There was nothing else we wanted to do downtown, so we paid for our parking and went back home.
Btw, we went and watched Immortals the next morning at Tanforan (in 3D) and it went off without a hitch. Yay for Tanforan! -
Review from Kenneth Y.
San Francisco, CA
I came here to watch some new movies and it's a good place. It is large and it even has the IMAX. Only problem is the IMAX only shows certain movies.
Their concession stands have a large variety of food besides the traditional popcorn, soda, ice, and hot dog. They sell chicken tenders, seasoned curly fries and different combos together.
Watching their previews, this theater and most San Francisco theater is suppose to be zero waste by year 2020 and they already have separate trash cans for composite, recyclables, and waste. Even the bathrooms use those nifty Dyson hand blow dryers in place of paper towels.
Overall the theater has been there for a while and the popcorn and soda is good. You can put as much or as little butter you can. The only thing sucks is when I went the past 2 times, it was only 1 person at the concession stand and it took a while before I can order my snacks. The theater rooms are big, depending which room you get.
**parking**
Garage during the day and afternoon and street parking in the evening! Read the signs before you park or you will get a fat ticket and maybe a tow job...
They take cash, credit, fandango, stubs. -
Review from Aaron R.

Has the best imax screen in the area!
Lately there have been a bunch of other theaters claiming to have an IMAX screen, but really its just a slightly larger than normal viewing area.
The Metreon has the REAL deal! the 5 stories tall IMAX screen that cost a bunch more than a normal movie, but its soooo worth it.
People look at me funny when I tell them I am willing to drive 50 something miles just to see a film, but its well worth it. I catch the films I really want to see in the big screen here, and its worth every extra penny -
Review from Kevin J.
The theater is great. Lots of screens and ample movies to choose from. It seems as if one or two of the rooms have had a makeover recently and although it's not visually stunning on the inside you get the feeling that you're in a big city, which is always fun. The staff seems to smile enough to let you know they enjoy what they do and the Metreon Center is still alive because of this theater.
the worse thing about this spot... the guests who come to watch the movies. If they could only learn to turn their cell phones to vibrate and stop texting while they're watching the movie. it's distracting. -
Review from P J.
San Francisco, CA
I don't really care for IMAX. The sound system sucks for what you pay for (it's not Dolby Digital nor THX). It's just really quite in-your-face blaring, very unsophisticated treatment of sound. I've never watched an IMAX movie again after two tries. Anyway, this theater used to be the Sony Metreon. Since Sony left, it's never the same. They are currently doing a makeover and hopefully it's something hi-tech looking, but with Target moving in, that doesn't seems to be the case. They have better seats at the Century theaters next door in the San Francisco Shopping Center. The Metreon doesn't even show big box office movies like Capt. America, Planet of the Apes, and Green Lantern to name a few. They show the crappiest movies in town.
You pay more here for movie tickets and the parking charge is ridiculous! They don't even validate unlike the one on Van Ness. Think about it...you park at their garage, you wait for your movie, you watch the movie and then you go eat. By the time you get back, the garage has charged you $30! That's more than the cost of the movie (or maybe even your dinner if you're by yourself or you and your friend ate at Mel's Diner)...a lot more since I got my movie tickets from Living Social which only cost me $4 each.
AMC Loews Metreon is nothing special, it's really not worth it, in fact it's a rip-off. However, if you still want to go to this theater, don't drive, take Muni/Bart. Oh btw, they went cheap and never installed mirrors in the men's restroom which I think is very strange (this is a first for me)...OIC, men never look at themselves in the mirror.
