As movie prices reach absurd levels in New York City, one theater retains the ability to attract movie lovers to a night out at the cinemas despite the cost.  While most movie theaters no longer carry that romantic allure which once made them a viable option for a date night, there is that one exception.  As the slow death of creativity in Hollywood becomes more evident with each film made in 3D, one theater still allows moviegoers to enjoy what is left.  And for moviegoers who are traumatized by learning that 99% of IMAX screens across the city are falsely advertised, hope is restored with the knowledge that there is still one.

AMC Loews Lincoln Square 13 is the ONE.

Without question, this Loews is the undisputed champion of multiplexes in NYC.   Kept in immaculate condition, the spacious Loews Lincoln Square 13 (LSQ13) is the cleanest and most inviting destination for a movie.  Located in the heart of the Upper West Side, LSQ13 draws the politest of crowds that allows viewers to enjoy a movie experience to the fullest and free of distractions.  Regal in Union Sq, AMC Time Square and AMC 34th Street could learn a few things from LSQ13.  Moreover, the location of the theater also allows moviegoers to do some shopping to kill some time prior to start of the show with Banana Republic, GAP, and Century 21 right down the block.  After the film is over, there are excellent restaurant choices within a few blocks of the theater including The Mermaid Inn, Dovetail, Nanoosh, Boulud, and Flor de Mayo.

In the end, the main attraction for LSQ13 is the IMAX screen without question.  It is also the only true IMAX theater in NYC.  Having the opportunity to watch breathtaking moments on an IMAX screen from the likes of The Dark Knight, Avatar, Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, and How To Train A Dragon, it leaves you completely blown away with scenes and moments you will remember for years to come. You get to enjoy a movie in the true cinematic greatness it was meant to be experienced in.  And yes, tickets for The Dark Knight Rises are already on sale.  Ordered yours yet?

This is quite possibly the best multiplex theater in NYC. Located near Lincoln Center on Manhattan's upper west side, this is one of the cleanest and best designed theater with stadium seating.

Everything here is easily accessible from the moment you step in. Plenty of automated ticket kiosks or live ticketers. This is also one of the few IMAX theaters in Manhattan.

Of course the concession food costs are typical movie theater prices but the good thing here is that they turn a blind eye towards bringing in outside food. Here I once saw a guy with the cojones to walk in with an entire large pizza. True story.

The crowd that goes here are usually the quiet, respectful types that know not to talk on their cel phones in the middle of the movie. It might be a more stuffy crowd but stuffy people tend to keep their traps shut. That's the trade off and that's one of the many reasons why I continue to come here.

The IMAX screen here is a great improvement over the one in Long Island (The Cradle of Aviation Museum) which makes everyone dizzy. But if you sit to the side or near the front, you might as well just stay home.

Word of advice, if you are watching an IMAX movie, pre-order tickets online and get there 45min to an hour early to get decent seats!

Definitely the best AMC and IMAX in the city. But depending on the movie you watch, your experience will vary. It's a crap shoot - some screens and theaters are huge, with a fancy mezzanine level and others are small and unimpressive. All the theaters have a theme to their entrances. If you're not running late for your movie, or if you hate movie trailers, stop and take a look.

Love that this is in the neighborhood, but really disappointed in the theater itself. Okay, so I lived in Southern Cali for a while and the theaters could rival any, but when I pay $16 for a ticket, I kinda expect it to have stadium seating and the ability to pick my seat ahead of time.

Classic theaters are incredible and I wouldn't change a thing, but at a newer, expensive theater?? It really created chaos for the opening weekend of "The Iron Lady" when people waited in line for over an hour and then literally fought one another for seats. This is a common scene here.

Fantastic HUGE theater.  Really reminiscent of the movie palaces of the 20's and 30's that have been subsequently ripped down as the years have gone by.  If you've been to one that still remains, you realize how cool it is to see a movie in a place that seems like it should be showing an opera.

Sadly since we don't have a historic Paramount theater, this will do just fine.  They have a great setup and themed theaters....I was in the one that looked like a Jeannie's bottle/Indian/Persian and sat on the balcony.  Yes, there's a real balcony!

    Go to there!

Out of all the theaters in New York, this has to be my favorite. I've never had any issues here and its really always been a pleasant experience going to the movies here. Concession lines move fast, the bathrooms are clean, and the floors are never sticky. My only issue is that I don't live closer to it. Have to take a crosstown bus and the subway a few stops. But completely worth the trip.

Despite the fact that I ended up seeing a horrible movie accidentally due in part to my roommate bringing us to the wrong Michael Fassbender film... I quite enjoyed the location at least. The theatre is huge, and we were both elated to see a huge array of food and drink options before entering the theater. I got myself a personal pizza while my roommate got chicken tenders. We were contemplating getting pretzel bites but according to AMC's calculations and advertisement, there were over 2000 calories in one serving... which I would very much like to dispute. How dare they shame us out of eating delicious treats during our cinematic experience!

The employees that we did interact with were all very pleasant, which is worth noting considering this is a huge movie theater that gets frequented by patrons constantly, and a lot of them I'm sure have complained- about food prices and what not so it was nice to see that despite all of that the employees were all very nice to us.

The drink sizes were ridiculous I mean honestly a small was basically a large.. who would get a jumbo size is beyond me. The prices are typical movie theater inflated prices, nothing really out of the ordinary.

The seats at the theater are comfortable and plentiful... I don't really know what else to say other than I hope an actual good movie comes out (don't you dare say 'Twilight') so I can come back here again.

Is it impossible to find the Mission that is impossible on the big screen. The IMAX is a ride unless you have motion sickness, its an emergency. I was first here when I was a kiddie before they played motion pictures on the big screen, when they only had educational showings. I watched into the sea and on top of a mountain. But yesterday I bared witness to Ethan Hawke scaling the tallest building in the world, on a screen about the same size as the tallest building in the world. If there is an action packed adventure to be seen, make sure its seen on the big screen!

This is the best theatre in Manhattan for me. Whenever something cool comes out in IMAX I can be found here checking it out. Comfortable seats and always a nice crowd, plus the neighborhood is a huge bonus for me.

I love that each theatre is identified by it's own theme.

THE REAL IMAX (not the 'Lie-Max').  I can only imagine how a fire drill would go...  definitely a tall building with tons of floors, escalators, and stairwells.  Bathrooms could be cleaner, but definitely a theater to hit for real IMAX movies.

I really like this movie theater.
First off, and most importantly, it has the best IMAX screen in the city. So, it's getting its 5 stars just for that.
Aside from that, I like the fun, theatrical decor and the "themed" theaters with names instead of numbers. It's clean and well-kept.

The theater I was in yesterday unfortunately had the overly short seats that don't give you any neck support, but I'm pretty sure that most of the theaters here have better seats - I was attending an advance test audience screening, so we weren't given the best theater.

If you want to see a true IMAX experience (not the ones where some theaters converted a standard screen and added an IMAX projector), this is the place to go to. This theater is the only one in all of NYC that has a true IMAX screen. I read somewhere that the screen is 8 stories high.

I recently watched Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol, but I have watched other movies in the past such as 300 and Superman Returns. The best place to sit in the IMAX theater is in the back so you get a good view of the whole screen. However, just like any movie theater, you must get there early to get a good seat.'

I have watched movies in other screens of the movie theater, and I like the decor outside of each screen. Also, each screen has a nickname. Like any multiplex in Manhattan, expect to take an escalator to get to the screen of the movie you want to watch.

This place gets crowded, but I think it's not as bad as the other AMC theaters such as the ones in Times Square and 34th Street.

You feel like you are walking into a casino-theme theater, all the names are...casino-sounding. Clean and comfortable seating, movies start pretty much on time. The food they were selling smelled like fried goodness, but I held back. Maybe next time.

    Tip-bits:

    Right across the Apple store
Ticketing machines right there on the first floor by the doors when you walk in.
    $6 movies before noon!
Plenty of stalls in the bathrooms, relatively clean for most part

The only reason this theater gets an A-OK instead of a Meh, is that their IMAX screen is an actual IMAX screen, not some suped up regular sized screen posing as IMAX to steal my hard earned money. Beyond that, this place is always sold out, always kinda dirty, always crowded, always has the longest lines in the whole damn world, and always has somewhat bitchy staff overseeing all this mediocrity. I much prefer the Harlem Magic Johnson theater on 125th, or even the AMC in Times Square. But for IMAX movies worth their exorbitant ticket price, I'll go to the Lincoln Square theater, but I'll go at least an hour early ready to wait on the line that snakes through the entire multi-story place and out the side door. Gross, but true.

PS: I also truly hate the Cutesy Name For Each Theater convention that they have stuck to. Add a damn number people, and allow me to run to the bathroom and back without accidentally going into the Aztec instead of the Inca. Ugh.

They have a great IMAX screen. I generally like the AMC/Loews theaters. You know what to expect and get what you've come for. So, this review will be based on my one experience from last week.
3 weeks after opening, I finally got to see Harry Potter in IMAX 3D. There weren't that many people but the concession stand was really struggling. There was only one unmotivated employee working at the IMAX concession that day and the line was looping around. The people got impatient and annoyed as the previews started but there was no sign of urgency on the employee's part. She was taking her sweet time slowly moving from the popcorn stand to the soda machine and hot dog grill. I got into the theater right before the movie started but I'm sure some people had to miss the beginning. AMC should do a better job training their staff and allotting proper coverage.

I find it hilarious that some people gave this theater lower ratings because the movie wasnt good or because they are too weak to handle 3D movies. That is not the theater's fault and should not be penalized for it.

This theater is fairly clean compared to all the other movie theaters in NYC and the IMAX theater is the best and biggest in NYC (According to figures provided by IMAX, the Lincoln Square auditorium has a screen that measures 100 feet by 80 feet). I do agree that it is better to sit as high up as possible, especially if you get motion sickness (just take some dramamine beforehand) only because the screen is so big and makes you feel like you are in the movie, especially during action scenes.

If you go to movie theaters to use the bathrooms, then you got a problem. I am rating the actual "movie theater". I never use public bathrooms in NYC anyways. But If you must, make sure you carry sanitary wipes with you.  Other than that, this movie theater ROCKS!

Came here with a girlfriend a few weeks ago.  The theater is large, clean and comfortable.  It should be for $13 a ticket though.

During the last 15 minutes of the movie, the sound completely cut out.  The whole theater was just sitting there in silence.  By the time one of the workers figured it out, we watched it till the end which was kind of crappy.  They decided to rewind the movie to the point where the sound gave out, so we ended up staying an extra 15 or so minutes.  Not too terrible, but it definitely ruined the consistency of the movie.  No biggie though, we went to customer service afterwards and were given a free ticket voucher for any AMC theater.

My friend taught me a great tip...there's a Food Emporium right next door where we loaded up on soda and other movie snacks, put them in our bags, and walked into the theater.  It definitely saved us several bucks.

Clean, not crowded, but best of all, great seats!

This was my first AMC experience since moving to NYC a month ago, and I must say, I was impressed! AMC theaters have the best seats, and this theater didn't disappoint.

I've never gone to a theater where mezzanine seats were available! It was so new to me.. maybe I should sit up there next time I catch a movie. I'll probably be here often since I love going to the movies and can purchase discounted tickets at school for only $8 for gold passes (or $6.50 for Silver)! Yeah, just rubbing it in. HA.

I've seen Tron and Transformers here, both in IMAX 3D and the screen was monstrous. I don't see the point in having seats so close to the screen. Definitely get there at least an hour early to avoid getting the crappy seats. The seats are comfortable but the armrests don't move unfortunately.

Needless to say, this is what you call an IMAX experience. The IMAX theater is on the 4th floor (alot of escalator rides). Don't bother going to other pseudo-IMAX AMC theaters like Kips Bay. Next movie on the list is Harry Potter 7 Part 2!

Just make sure to get to an IMAX movie that's around opening weekend at least an hour prior to the movie start time, or else you'll have crap seats.
Clean, NOT touristy, nor overly crowded.
They also have a really nice and patient customer service desk if you screw up and say, buy regular 3D movie tickets... I mean, if you're drunk and on http://Fandango.com it CAN happen.

This is as close as I've gotten to finding a "movie palace" in New York like they used to have in the 20s and 30s. At some point last century, theater companies abandoned the idea that going to a movie should be an experience above and beyond that provided by the film itself. AMC Loews Lincoln Square makes a solid attempt at reviving that long-lost tradition. Each theater has a name with accompanying decorations. The snack counters are decorated with massive columns and planters. All in all, I was impressed and pleased. I felt like I was doing more than just shelling out $14 to shovel popcorn into my mouth in a urine-soaked candy-covered garbage dump.

    Thumbs up.

Looking at the size of this theatre from the outside, one can assume that the theaters are big and roomy.... but on the contrary. Unless you are viewing an IMAX feature which has impressive floor to ceiling screens as well as stadium seating, the regular theaters are cramped and small.
I came here for a free screening. I loved the hallways and the themes for each theatre but i did not love the cramped seating style. The chairs are ridiculously uncomfortable. The rows are entirely too small for anyone to pass by without climbing over you or making you get up from the alredy tiny seats and if someone tall sits in front of you you are pretty much fucked for the entire movie.
I guess I am spoiled with the awesomely big chairs and spacious rows in queens... and dude, can i freakin get a CUP HOLDER???

Love dropping in here to catch a flick. Saw Fast Five yesterday and had a terrific time at the movies. Decor has an art deco style to it. Each theater has it's own name. Old movie stars and scenes are adorned on the walls. Escalators worked fine. Bathroom was clean. Concession stand counter people were friendly and quick.

I also like that the theater I was in had nice cushy stadium style seating. Always a bonus when someone tall sits right in front of you and this type of seating allows you to still see over them. Plus, there is more leg room with these seats, and they rock back real nice. The AC was crisp and cool too.

Lots of movies playing here, in 3D and IMAX too. No complaints at all!

    Surprise ending: a mouse!

We came to this theater location to watch a 10:15 pm show for X-Men: First Class.  Talk about being a small and cramped space!  (X-Men was being played in theater 11 Palace.)

The small theater was crowded, so we had to sit in the very last row in the back next to the exit.  There was barely enough leg room.  A couple sat in the row in front would recline and the back of their seats would hit your knees!  Not to mention, the ceilings are low in the back section for anyone sitting in the rear.

At the end of a 2-hour long movie, we saw a tiny little mouse scurry across the floor behind the second-to-last row of seats.  There goes clean-up staff in theater 11!

I always am in hog heaven when I see a sci-fi/fantasy film on IMAX here!  Just saw Super 8 this Friday, and it was grand old time.

Sometimes you will have to get here early for new releases, because the line will be down the stairs and around the block.  Can you say Avatar or Star Trek or Deathly Hallows!?!!

The customer service is always spot-on.  For instance, if I get stuck with some messed-up seat, like the front row due to trifling and tardy individuals who I hang with making us arrive late to the line, no sweat.  i just go to customer service desk and request a credit for another show.  They're always acquiescent.

Of all the movie theaters in all of New York City, I walked into this one, and never looked back. The place is grandiose enough to make going to the movies feel like an event (the theater they use for opening movies even has a balcony!). The seats are comfortable, the sound quality crisp. It has the largest IMAX screen in NYC (the second largest is half the size).

Most importantly, the crowd isn't made of ragtag, often noisy groups (a la times square), but is - for the most part- full of quiet, respectful patrons.

Just don't watch (older) movies in the basement level, where the screen and seats are average, and you'll have found the perfect place to watch that movie you really wanted to see (e.g. Scooby Doo 3: Shaggy's Revenge)

I only have had good experiences here. Recently, ive been doing the whole "movie by myself" thing (still single!)  and the staff is always super friendly to me and will engage in conversation about whatever movie I'm about to see.

I prefer going on their off hours as it isn't nearly as busy and you feel like you have the place to yourself. A few days ago I made the mistake of seeing a 7:30 show and these foreigners seriously were getting up every 30 minutes and not saying excuse me, and talking on the damn phone during previews. Aaauuugh.

Tip- always upgrade to a large bottle of water, it's only 50cents extra!

Going to the movies is expensive. Its a fact of life unfortunately. However, this theater makes the sting hurt less. Nice stadium seating, decent food and fresh popcorn. What more can you ask for?

Yes, the staff can be a little rude and rough, but I don't go to the movies to be coddled. At the end of the day, I have a good time here. This is my theater of choice, and they have IMAX.
