Opening night madness! I've been here a couple of times and the most recent trip here was for the opening night of Hunger Games. Holy crap it was chaotic. I think they did the best they could but man I think the lines could have been set up a little better. It got all jumbled once we got upstairs.

On a regular night, this theater is quite nice, It's large and comfortable. The chairs aren't terrible and the bathrooms are large enough where there isn't a terribly huge line in the ladies room.

Tip for the ladies: It's can get really cold here! Bring a sweater!

I guess when your benchmark for movie theaters growing up is the Park Slope Pavilion, you don't really have high standards for places to watch movies...but this theater is surprisingly good!

perhaps being a little off the beaten path is a good thing for this movie theater. it doesn't feel "broken-in" or dirty. the staff don't seem drained of life, even on a Friday night. the seats don't leave you in pain. the sound system is decent and the screen was in good condition.

get there at least half hour early to get a good seat! though that should be your standard operating procedure with movies by now, anyway.

one of the nicer movie theaters in the city.

stadium seating, even in the smaller theaters.

movie tickets in NYC are ridiculous though.

also, they gave free small popcorn during tax weekend!  ohhhh yea!

I've been coming to this movie theater for the last 4+ yrs, living around the corner in Murray Hill.  This theater gets all of the hot,new releases, it's always clean and the seating is comfortable and modern.  It's also convenient to a number of restaurants and bars so you can really make a dinner 'n' a movie night.  This is definitely my favorite movie theater and I imagine I'll return even after I move.

This is a pretty big theater, and the crowds aren't as wild as the theaters in Time Square. If you live in the city, this is a good theater to go to, but if you're driving in, it's impossible to find parking in the area.

Me: do you have diet sprite?
    Concession: yes
Me: oh great, I'll have a small diet sprite then
Concession: we don't have diet sprite, only sprite
Me: uh, I just asked you if you have diet sprite
Concession: I thought you asked if we have ice

Terrible concession service aside, the audience here tends to be quiet once the movie starts.

AMC Kips Bay is easy to get to from my M15 bus line.

I'm trying not to be snooty but yes, it may be above average for New York but not for other states.  It's what I expect in a theater...movies, semi clean theater with sticky floors, overpriced popcorn and soda.

Thank you AMC for taking my free vouchers from my obnoxious amount of purchases from groupon and living social.  I got to enjoy Hunger Games without a line but in a very New York sized theater.  My initial showing time was jam packed so rather than sitting and staring straight up into the screen,  we got new tickets and waited 30 minutes for the next show.

The ticket person who tore your tickets as you went into a theater was doing WAAAAAY to good of a job.  She stopped people who already had their tickets torn who made the mistake of using the restroom without their ticket.

There really isn't much more you can ask from a movie theater in NYC. This is the only theater I go to (if I can help it). I've tried out a couple others (friends have made plans) and this is by far the best place, i've watched about 6-10 movies here in the last year alone (I'm definitely a movie buff). You get IMAX and 3D movies here with regular showtimes and they show all the recent movies (and some older ones as well.) I usually buy my tickets online so I can skip the box office process, but I've tried that a couple of times as well, and that's definitely quick.

There is almost never much of a crowd here. I think it's further away from subway stations than other movie theaters and thank god I live 6 blocks away- it's almost like a personal theater for me. It's usually quiet and you almost always get seats at the last minute- I've never actually seen a sold out show there. It's always really quiet and doesnt have that craze surrounding most movie theaters.

It's pretty clean as far as NYC movie theaters go. I mean...occasionally you'll see a discarded 3D glasses wrapper but I've never seen anything gross like spilled soda or food. And the seats are pretty nice- cushy and they recline a bit and the leg room is great.

The staff is pretty friendly. They're quiet and don't get in your way much. But they're definitely helpful- I called inquiring about their silver experience tickets and the lady on the phone was extremely helpful and patient and answered all my questions.

The food is pretty good as well. I love the popcorn because you get to butter it yourself and it's almost always freshly popped. They have all the candy you'd want and they have other stuff too like chicken tenders and nachos, so definitely good on the snacks. Of course, you ARE in the city, so if I were getting real food, I'd probably just get it outside. But as far as the traditional popcorn and soda goes, it's definitely as good as it gets.

The only detractors: once they said they didn't have coke. Which kind of movie theater doesn't have coke? And once they started a film almost 20 minutes late. But since these happened only once and I've had great experiences otherwise so I don't feel like I need to take off a star.

Now this theater knows how to show a movie! Great stadium seating; no issues with tall people sitting in front of me and blocking my view. and the screen is really large. The total opposite experience of the crappy theaters I had been going to in NYC up until this point. I wish all theaters had this same setup.

only reason for 4 stars instead of 5; this location is a total nightmare to get to from where I live. It ended up taking like 45 minutes-1 hour; which is outrageous just to go see a movie. I guess that's not their fault though!

Nice theater and comfy seats. I have hardly ever seen this place crowded so its great for a group of friends to be able to sit together. If you go early on the weekends they have cheaper tickets otherwise I think the going price is $13! Movies aren't cheap but if you are gonna spend that amount, this would be a theater to do so in!

Very nice movie theater. Comfortable seats. Stadium seating. Not too cold. Very good audio and video quality. Also advertised many interesting movie events they are hosting. One was a Marvel Movie Marathon ($40 for 6 movies back-to-back starting 1130 am on a Thursday). I enjoy how they are working to keep the movie going experience interesting.

This place is great. It's so out of the way that it's usually not that crowded... and the area isn't particularly "hip" or "trendy" so it's great for when you just want to go out and watch a movie in peace without getting all dressed up. I mean, once my friend came here in a makeshift toga to see Superbad after a failed attempt to throw a toga party... and she managed to fit in quite nicely with the surrounding Kips Bay crowd. Way to go!

It is BIG.  Sometimes it gets too crowded with teens and it can be noisy and distracting when you are trying to watch a movie, but usually it is fine.  I always avoid opening night because of the lack of oxygen and my loathing of crowds but the seating here is very big if you are upstairs (big stadiums).  I prefer to not sit in a basement theatre - kinda grosses me out but it is the luck of the draw whether or not you are sent down to the dungeon.

Watched a 3D movie here the other day. The movie theater felt a bid sad but hey, it was a Wednesday night, so I guess it's normal for it to be slow.

    What else can I say?

There were two people at the concession counter and it seemed to be taking a long time.  They were also getting frustrated when clients would go straight into the movie theater without stopping at the concession stand to show their tickets  -  weird.

The whole ordeal was a bit confusing and I just wanted to get my water and watch my movie.

The screen was big.  The seats were decently comfortable and the rows were elevated well above each other.

    Good experience.

I live legit 1.5 blocks away from the cleanest, biggest, IMAX-included theater in NYC! GO ME! =D

I come here at least once a month to check out the newest releases. I usually buy my tickets online via fandango, print out my tickets, and zip through all the lines. The IMAX screen is nice but nothing compared to the one in Liberty Science Center. Come early during new releases or you'll be looking forever for a seat!

A little pricey though - the cashier rang up $19 for my IMAX ticket and I looked at him, surprised, and told him it was only me. He smiled and replied, "I know." Damn.

One of my favorite movie theaters.

Spacious. Clean. Friendly Employees. Comfy seats. Good Sound System. Clear/Large Screen.

Regular tickets are pricey. If you arrive before 12 pm, tickets are much more affordable (around $6).

Their concession stand offers a bit more than just popcorn, soda, and candy. They also sell hot dogs, chicken tenders, fries, pizza, etc. As you would expect, their snacks are pricey. There are plenty of snacks around the area. I suggest grabbing a little something before heading towards the theater.

The location is pretty primo for my friends and me. It's accessible by both the 6 train and the M15 bus. We had Fandango tickets and were able to skip the box office line on the first floor but were stuck behind a large party when we made it upstairs to the next set of ticket-takers. No worries - the theater is spacious and fairly up-to-date so waiting those extra few minutes wasn't so bad. The IMAX experience was fine but I'm not sure if I need to see any other movie in IMAX. I just didn't need to move my head to follow the action of a film. Overall, this place was good and the popcorn tasted fresh. (However, $4 for a bottle of water is just flat out STUPID.)

This place is still pretty excellent. I was here over the summer and saw Bad Teacher (Cameron Diaz movie) and even on a saturday, the crowd was not too insane for an after 8 PM showing.  I think it is one of those hidden theaters because some people are lazy and do not like to walk 4 to 5 blocks from the subway when you suggest this as a place to meet for a movie.

I had the best time ever when I came here for one of the movie premiers back on October 8, 2003. It was the KILL BILL VOL. 1 Advance screening. Miramax Films, it was a GIANT premier presented by 92.3 and HOT 97 FM.  THE Lines were out the door, I mean really out the fucking door. I got there so early just to save a spot in line but it payed off as I got to see Quentin Tarintino's film before anyone else.  I did also see Machete when it was released here as well.
-never had a problem with concessions here, except maybe the line was too long but I was just ordering a drink so just had to wait it out.

Great movie theater.  The theaters themselves aren't particularly huge but decent enough.  The seats are pretty good, not ripped up or visibly worn out.  The only issue I do have is that the cup holder/arm rest are static, but I guess that is a personal preference (my wife's also).

    Lines Lines Lines.
Its a saturday night, I get the lines. But why are they so understaffed? The people working the concession were having a grand ol' time laughing and talking amongst eachother which I totally get but the line was really long, the movies were starting soon and their lack of muster made me miss the first 5 minutes of my movie.
And who runs out of coke???
I was heart broken and the kid said "we have coke zero" which cheered me up because i actually like the stuff. I pay for my large coke zero, walk the incredibly long hallway to theatre 10 only to find they gave me FLAT  DIET COKE.
    GAG.
And when i took it back to complain they told me it WAS coke zero and didnt offer to change it for something drinkable.
The seats are uncomfortable (kaufman UA has the BEST theatre seats EVER) and the arm rests dont move. wtf.

Saturday night...rare nor'easter with snowy rain.  We decide to watch the 7:30PM showing of The Rum Diary and when we arrived at 7PM, there was line sectioned off for us in the outside area before they check your tickets.

Fine...we get it.  It's opening weekend.

We wait.  By the time 7:15 rolls around, all of us in line are like, shouldn't they be letting us into the theater by now?  7:20.  7:25.  They finally check our tickets and let us in.

But WAIT!  Nope, we are not let into the theater.  We move forward to another sectioned off line right outside of the theater.

7:30.  Isn't our movie supposed to start right now?  7:35.  We finally understand the problem now.  People start coming out of the theater we're supposed to be in.

The movie did not start until 8PM.  They continued to show their Loews ads but didn't play the previews for us since they were way behind schedule.  I would have preferred the previews over the ads.

But come on, couldn't someone have let us known what was going on??

    I feel so suburban.

Enter vast hallways, sleepy daytime traffic and crusty signage... all the telltale signs of a well-loved local cinema. Kips Bay is easy to spot, rising up out of a mini-mall style complex near the east side medical centers and Murray Hill. It's not so convenient, but for that same reason it doesn't draw the madhouse of most Manhattan movie houses. They offer matinee pricing at $6 and will carry big releases and 3D features with ridiculously rapid fire show times. You miss one show? No sweat, the next starts in 30 minutes.

As with any theater, I'd advise you to come early for popular times or flicks. Oh, and I wouldn't advise getting the movie theater version of french fries and mozzarella sticks. I haven't dared try them for myself, but c'mon people, we are still in NYC and if you really need a snack there's a bodega across the street.

For budget friendly pricing, come see the movie before noon. The theater won't be as packed and you'll save a few $ unless you can obtain the AMC Silver/Gold tickets for $6/$8, respectively at the Kimmel Center.

For popular movies in IMAX/3D, definitely get there at least an hour early to get good seats. The there are 3 levels but only the Lower Level and Upper Level have theaters. For a true IMAX/3D experience, I recommend the AMC Lincoln Square location.

I definitely agree with Jason M., the crowd at the AMC 42nd St is just rude and disrespectful. I haven't had any major issues at Kips Bay 15.

I've never tried the food because its way overpriced. The staff has been friendly overall.

I LOVE GOING TO THE MOVIES.

This was my first visit to AMC Loews Kips Bay. We watched Sherlock Holmes - AWESOME movie.

The cinema is extremely spacious, and clean. All the staff were extremely welcoming and friendly. The seats were super comfortable. The environment is really relaxed, and the crowd were much more reserved, and a bit less rowdy than what you could expect in other cinemas.

The view of the city from the second level is spectacular - especially at night time. We purchased prepaid tickets earlier in the day, to avoid waiting in line. I thought the cinema was relatively quiet for a Saturday night, and I didn't notice anyone lining up for long periods. Tickets were $13.50 each, which is relatively good for Midtown Manhattan.

I could not fault my visit to AMC Loews Kips Bay - 5 star service, quality and cleanliness - VERY HAPPY :).

We live nearby so come here fairly often. The last year or so it seems they are understaffed and the staff they have looked overworked and weary. Saturday night we were surprised to see they let us in the movie as the movie was just getting out. Needless to say the movie theater was not clean ....AT ALL...when i alerted one of the staff they insisted it was cleaned. TRUST ME it wasn't for we we're the first ones in there. It's so expensive to go to a movie these days and then add on the concessions the theater should be at least clean. They clearly have lack of management experience there and the workers could not care less. Oh, one other thing be prepared to wait in line for popcorn (downstairs)forever.

I went to see Happy Feet Two in 3D IMAX today for the 3:30 showing. First off, they kept messing with the lights, the theatre would dim, then go black, then full blown lights up! Second, they didn't even start the previews until 3:50. Third, during the previews the lights kept going from full blown then dim, then black then full blown lights on, not house lights, like the light that brings you to heaven bright, which they left up through the remainder of the previews and then finally the movies starts around 4:05 (35 minutes late) and the bright lights were still up. I had to get up out of my seat, and miss the first few minutes tracking down an employee to turn the lights off! I was so mad.

Late, lights up and missed the first few minutes, this is not how you run a theatre. You'd think for such a big chain, and the cost to the patrons, they'd have their act together more.

If you can manage to pry yourself from your warm bed before 11am on the weekend, Kips Bay will reward you with $6 tickets on all movies before noon.  It's a great deal and the perfect time to see movies in our bedbug infested city.  Also, for the terminally late, you can still grab primo seats (first row behind the railing so you can put your feet up?  DONE!)

At AMC Kips Bay, you have the bonus of a relatively clean theater and easy ticket purchasing on the little self service machines.

I'd recommend a kid's pack to go along with your movie morning.  It's ~$6 and scores you a kid's size soda or icee (mmm...blue raspberry!), a kid's size popcorn (with the amount of lard I like to put on it, I can't really go past kid's size) and a pack of fruit snacks (you know, to add questionable nutritional value).  Compared to the usual movie theater prices on snacks, this is a great value and easily shared between you and your main squeeze as a pre-brunch snack...

PARTING THOUGHT: that melted lard/butter stuff is soooooooo good!!!

This review is IMAX specific! ;)

There's some rockin' base in this theater's speakers (almost TOO rockin' given the 50 previews), but when I shell out $19 (not including fandango fees) for IMAX 3D tix? Well, I expect some IMAX with my 3D! The IMAX screen here is as big as the regular screens at Lincoln Square. Yawn. Big YAWN. And what's with the flimsy lensed 3D glasses? If I tilted my head I saw new ghosts (aka whitish blurs) in the film. This theater needs to back off the base, upsize the screen, and upgrade the windex and repeat 3D glasses.

Somehow, this was the only location for Harry P IMAX 3D, but given another chance I'd likely just hit the monster IMAX at Lincoln Square. Just sayin'...

The AMC Kips Bay feels a little like the suburbs in the city - it's located in a strip mall next to Crunch gym, CVS, Petco, and a Borders (R.I.P.).  It's great to have an IMAX theater in the neighborhood, as well as a wide variety of new movies playing at any given time.  Considering this place is bigger that some other theaters near Union Square and Time Square, it never really feels as crowded.

They also do a good job of keeping the place clean, so you don't have to worry about your shoes sticking to the floor.  Also, if you have access to Working Advantage, you can pick up AMC vouchers for $6.50 a pop (though there are surcharges if you're viewing IMAX or 3-D films).

I've never been let down by this theater. Or any AMC theater in the city, for that matter.

Most recently, I came here to see Harry Potter 7 Part 2 in IMAX 3D. I was highly impressed by the sound, the visuals and the cleanliness of the facilities.

Why isn't it 5 stars? The movie was scheduled to start at 5:10. At 5:20, they were still looping their ridiculous pre-show quiz shows with horrific accompanying music. Someone from the theater finally had to get up and tell management that the movie hadn't started. They were completely unaware and had to go to the projection room to manually start it for us. It wasn't the end of the world, of course, but it did seem a bit unprofessional.

In the end, though, I'll happily return any time to this theater.

Kip's Bay is a typical movie theater. There's no reason to avoid it, seeing a movie here is just fine. Reasonably clean & comfy seats, acceptably large screens - but there's nothing amazing about it either.
Yesterday, the first seats we took suffered from the very poor placement of a railing - the metal bar went right across the screen from both of our seated viewpoints (me: average/short, him: rather tall). Luckily, it wasn't too crowded so we could easily move.
Actually, the main draw of the place, for me, is its proximity to the Waterfront Ale House... seeing a movie is a pretty good excuse to stop in there!
(I used to also like to browse in the Borders next door while waiting for my movie, but now Borders is gone! Sad!)

Kips Bay is a decent place to watch a movie.  However, I dont like the crazy lane system they have in front of the theater which makes parking or arriving in a taxi difficult.  Nonetheless, I enjoy the fact that I can see a premier movie in IMAX 3-D only a few days after its release and not go through the drama of crowds.  This place has multiple levels with open space and is fairly easy to navigate.  It gives you the relaxing feel of enjoying a movie instead of wondering through crowds in other NYC theaters.

The biggest con I have about this place is the food stand.  The workers take forever to serve you such easy already prepared items.  They often joke with workers who are recently off the clock instead of paying attention to the customers. Also, the sprite they served me was all water with no carbonation.  Complaining would have made me miss the movie so I just threw it away.

The IMAX 3D screen made up for this theaters short falls.  We easily found a place to sit and actually switched places for a better view.  Leaving the theater was easy even with it being opening weekend.

Nice kind of theater.  A little bit out of the way for craziness since it is a few avenues from the train.  I really appreciated the fact that I could get a matinee for $6.

Has a very clean lobby, with theaters up and downstairs.  I headed up and the theater itself was nice and clean.  The concessions were fairly quick.  Really what more could one ask for?
