Here's the dilly:
- Great location: Just a couple blocks north of Union Square.
- Not crowded: Compared to some of the other movie theaters just south of Union Square, this one is not as crowded.
- Needs renovation: Seats aren't as comfortable as the newer theaters and they don't have stadium seating.
- Friendly staff -
Review from Katherine I.
Queens Village, NY
The only thing this theater has going for it is the location and the friendliness of the majority of its staff. Sometimes you get to catch that ONE movie that's nearly on it's way off the big screen; the movie you've been wanting to see but now it's not on any of the better theater's playlist. This is the fallback theater I go to when I can't go to the Regal Union Square.
No stadium seating. Run down. Needs a renovation. Still costs the same as the bigger theaters.
Sometimes, though, you just want to enjoy a movie in a theater that is not crowded, and you'll put up with a lumpy seat that doesn't lean back in order to do it. It's an easy walk to the subway since it's right there on Union Square and there's plenty of food choices around that area.
If Kips Bay was easier to get to on the subway, I'd go there to get the most out of my AMC Stubbs card, but after work I'm lazy and this theater will do just fine.
It's not terrible, but it has certainly seen better days. -
Review from Julia B.
This was quite a dingy cinema. I like the location of this cinema, as it's conveniently close to Union Square, so that's why I chose for my friend and I to see a flick. But damn, never again.
The seats were not that comfortable and they leaned far back. Weird.
Now I know to go elsewhere. -

It's a smaller theater. Other than that it's your regular, bit older movie theater. It could use a bit of renovation.

Review from Toan N.

Because it is somewhat centrally located with close access to the subway, you and your friends cannot complain about having to "go out of your way" to see a movie. The theater has a good selection of new releases. The staff is friendly and directs you to whatever theater your movie is showing. Silver AMC vouchers are good for all shows except for new releases (after two weekends from the release date). If you present a silver voucher for a new release, they will charge $1.50 per voucher. This is a small price to pay since it is the price difference between a gold and silver voucher.
Advice to AMC: Buy out the tenants above and build higher ceilings to accommodate stadium seating.
Advice to customers: Get there early to nab the seats right behind handicapped seating. There is an open space for handicapped customers that remains empty 100% of the time. You don't have to "rubberneck" to watch a movie. -
Review from Jaimie L.
Okay, we were in the wedding spirit (fun times with my friend who's engaged). And of course we had to see Bridesmaids, which was hilarious. The movie was showing on the street level and so we didn't have to go downstairs. The snacks are also on the same level, which is convenient if we wanted to buy a costly box of M&Ms or something (No, thanks!). I'm not sure about crowding issues because we caught this flick before rush hour and so the theatre wasn't packed. A major downside: my friend had to use the restroom after the movie and she had to head downstairs for that...womp, womp, womp.
Overall, it's an okay spot to catch a flick if you're in the area, we just also happen to have free movie tickets too (sweet). -
Review from Diane C.
For a short person (me), this theater is the pits because the incline on the floor isn't steep enough to supplement my shortness. If a tallish person sits in front of me, I'm doomed with obstructed views!
I assume that in an effort to combat the said short people problem at this theater, they make their seats SUPER reclined... it almost feels like they are broken and you almost touch the knees of the person behind you. (must be annoying for tall people)
A theater that manages to be uncomfortable for both short AND tall people. Who would have thunk it possible? -

Not sure why this has such poor reviews.
I have come here for Something Borrowed and The Hangover 2 in the past month.
This place is never too crowded, good seating, and friendly service.
Being in the flatiron district also makes this a little bit out of way from your normal typical over-packed theater. -

Going to a movie should allow you to escape reality, but this one my friend...DOES NOT!!!
Everything about this theater seriously STINKS!!! I mean really, everything including their stale popcorn, outdated seating, stained rugs and even the clothing on their employees' uniform. Lucky for them, bed bugs don't have preference. If they did, I won't be surprise if this theather is infested with them since it looks like it hasn't been deep clean in years!
I'm sorry to say, but there are so many state of the art theaters in the city and if it wasn't because of a particular movie that I wanted to see, I wouldn't have gone here. Their hay day is long gone, and if they are looking to swim with the sharks, then they should consider closing down and reinventing themselves. If Madonna, John Travolta, and even Mickey Rourke can do it, so can they!!! -

They seriously need to remodel this place. The seats are terrible.
My biggest gripe with this theater though, is that the bathrooms are downstairs. Yes, I sound like a lazy fuck, but I just hate stairs. -

Don't come here if it's a DATE!
-Because you can't lift up the arm rest. So You are on your own.
Don't come if you are BIG
-Seats are small and no legroom.
Don't come if you pee every 30 minutes
-Bathroom is in the basement (If your show is on the first floor) -
Review from Jenna M.
I went to see a film screening here a few nights ago and was definitely not blown away by Loews 19th St. On a 30F evening, staff at the theater would not let us into the lobby to be checked in for the show -- we had to wait on a line OUTSIDE until the filmmakers and volunteers for the evening showed up. Say what? My friend and I were huddled together for warmth while we waited twenty minutes to be let inside: not a good first impression of this place.
The room in which we saw the show was massive, and accommodated the 400-person crowd fairly easily, but I'd say 3/4ths of the available seating was not ideal. Beyond the big middle section of seats, there were sets of three seats on the left and right-hand side of the theater from which I had a so-so view of the screen. Also: sets of three? Do people go to the movies in groups of three? I thought that was kind of weird.
The seats were pretty uncomfortable for the 95 minutes we were there, and while the movie played without a hitch, I thought the sound quality was atrocious. I didn't find the theater as dirty as other reviewers have said, but then again, I was outside most of the time, so maybe compared to the sidewalk on 19th St. anything was an improvement. I probably won't be back unless there's a compelling reason, like this one-night-only screening. But I'll remember to wear layers. -
Review from Ron C.
Out of all the AMC's I've been to in the city. This has to be one of the smallest. If you want to see a really good movie... Don't do it here. The seats are not comfy, the screen is small and it's a bit cramped inside.

Why didn't I listen to the reviews on here. I read the reviews and went to this theater anyway. Bad idea.
It's older so yeah... no stadium seating. The seats lean back oddly and are dirty. No head rest so your neck gets tired. No leg room. Bathrooms were dirty.
The screen was small (was in Theater 5). Digital projection but small screen. Screen had creases, a few scratches. At least it wasn't out of focus like most film screenings.
They also overcharged me at the concessions. Two sodas and I only got one. I saw the receipt right before the movie started and had to run up and get them to reverse the charge which took a little time.
Don't waste your time and money. -

So you have the AMC on 42nd Street with its six floors escalators and elevators and many, many theatres. Then you have the Loews on 34th Street with its fancy shmancy theatres. Or you have the Ziegfield, the best theatre in NYC. But then you have little dinky places like the Loews on 19th Street and Broadway.
Sure, its very generic looking with no pizzazz whatsoever. And sure the employees aren't the greatest in the world. And yeah, they do import their popcorn and basically just heat it up.
But let's face it, you're coming to watch a movie. And this theatre is basically just okay, nothing great. The seats are kinda cramped but they're comfortable enough. The floors are still sticky after all these years. And the sound is okay, not ear-shattering.
I wouldn't go out of my way to make this theatre destination #1 when it comes to watching a movie. But if the showtimes correspond with me being free, then I'm game.
SNEAKABILITY: not very good, unfortunately. Because the majority of the theatres are on the main floor it's quite difficult to go from one theatre to another without being caught. If you go to the downstairs theatres you have a better chance. The restrooms are down there so that will provide cover for you.Listed in: Five Movies - One Low Price

Good news - on the weekends you pay $6 for a matinee show
Bad news- their idea of a matinee show is before noon.
Before noon on a Saturday or Sunday? Are you blankety, blanketing me? Who the hell is up and cognizant at that hour. And do you really want to run from breakfast to a movie?
The place is bigger on the inside than it looks like it should be from the outside. I think it might be suffering from Tardis-itis. Bathrooms are in the basement (cue scary music) and the signs for it are not posted in obvious places.
Went to see a movie there recently and had to switch seats. The plush seats do recline, but in some cases recline so much that my friend attempted to lean back and found the back of her head in someone else's lap. -

They're still rockin' a 2-star rating. The seats are still ok but a little broke. The theaters are still dark so that you can't see how dirty they are. The upstairs lobby was craptastically littered with debris. And upstairs concessions (the only one available) was already more than half shut down even though there were still shows to be viewed.
But at least this time they ranked a solid 2-star rating instead of a "can't do 1.5-stars" pity vote!
Why so? Our ticket taker was very nice, jovial, and actually charming this time! The downstairs main area was cleaner than upstairs. The downstairs bathrooms were dealable. And the sound balancing was a bit better than last time.
But...still...meh.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Review from Karen B.
New York, NY
I've been here countless times, but today takes the cake.
I walked into my theater for the 4pm showing of I Love You, Man and quickly realized I forgot my bottled water.
I trek back upstairs to buy my $4 movie water and see who I think looks like a famous celebrity couple walking down the stairs...... "hmm," I think. "That wasnt'-- Oh my God, I think-- I wonder what movie they're going to see..."
I wait in line upstairs and get my $4 movie water and hear the concession people saying something about a movie said female celebrity was in.... "Confirmed," I thought. "It was totally them!" ...."I wonder if they're seeing my movie. I don't think they'd be seeing The Terminator."
I walk back into my theater where I left my hoodie and bag (yep, I'm trusting like that.) -- And I quickly realize Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins are not only in my theater, but sitting in my row.
"Holy shit," I think. "They're in my row! I'm gonna have to climb over Susan Sarandon and Tim Robbins!"
A few steps (and breaths) later, I walk back to my row and glance down at Ms. Sarandon who quickly lets me know that the two other seats next to her and Mr. Robbins are taken.
"I wonder which of their celebrity friends they brought with them!" I think.
"Oh, no--" I say, "My stuff's already down there at the end of the row-- Sorry, Thanks"
"I know who you are and I think you're really amazing and I'm going to be awesome and give you the peace you deserve cuz that's what us cool New Yorkers do," I glean with my eyes. ...."I love you Ms. Sarandon. I really really love you and I want you to ask me out after the movie so you can see how utterly amazing I am and then you can make me an honorary part of your family."
That didn't happen. In fact, I practically tripped over her two (very tall) sons (who sat in the celebrity mystery seats) as I was leaving.
I saw Tim Robbins smoking outside the theater afterwards and was disappointed.
sigh.
happy.
giggle.

2.5 stars...
This is the smallest Loews I've ever been to. The ticket booth is two windows on the outside of the theater, the concession stand is smaller than most mom and pop suburban theaters, and the theaters themselves are on the smaller side with smaller chairs than normal. This would all be tolerable if they charged accordingly but they don't, it's $12.50 for a regular ticket here. I'd rather take the subway a couple stops and go to nearly any other theater in the city for that price. -

NY
I love walking by a multiplex and almost missing it because the box office is so small.
The AMC at 19th and 6th is like stepping back in time to the mid 90s when the theater seats had cup holders that were just expanded to hold 48 oz drinks and the concept of stadium seating had yet to take hold. The arms between chairs don't rise up, the seats are slightly slopped upwards which makes no difference to someone short like me, and there is no real leg room. The theaters are long and narrow and the sound is not digitally enhanced.
In fact, this totally reminds me of the movie theaters I use to go to in middle school. There is no indie or art house charm and the convenience of the new megaplexes are no where on the horizon. This is a theater in the "phone it in" era of movie construction.
And, with an outdated appearance, it would have been nice to have some outdated concession prices but alas, all the soda and popcorn is priced at hernia inducing values. Oh well. -

Comparable place to see movies, they only have a handful at a time. Its a good place to try if there's nothing in the Union Square area theaters.
The patrons here are surprisingly civilized, I've seen all kinds of movies here and never have had a problem. Its in south Flatiron and its pretty quiet around there so its just subdued inside. Its never a madhouse really. The theaters are mid-sized, and the seating I felt is a little cramped and uncomfortable. but, given all that, its good, Its pretty much like the Loews in the east village. -

I mean, at the end of the day, yes, I will probably see another movie here. It's just not that impressive. It's between a 2 and a 3 star experience but I chose to go with the 3.
The story is always the same when I end up here. Oh, the movie I wanted to see is sold out at Union Square? Or, oh, the movie I want to see isn't play at Union Square? Okay, I guess I'll see what's playing at 19th street.
The seats are pretty uncomfortable and the theaters are small. The bathroom is downstairs. I mean, it's not perfect. No one ever CHOOSES 19th Street. But it's not horrible as a back-up. -

One ticket counter, outside. One electronic ticket booth inside. Strange entryway-layout. One-ticket taker making the entrance awkward. He's nice though, and tells you where to go. If you have to go downstairs, make sure to ask if the concessions stand is open down there, it has been closed every time I've been so far. There are stairs to go down, but an escalator to come back up. Not a big deal, unless you are on the main level, and have to go to the bathroom, which is in the basement. The trip can be annoying. In the theater - the screens are small, the sound is sub-par, and the chairs are not stadium, or comfortable. But despite ALL of that, this theater always plays what i want to see, is never too crowded, and is a block from my office. I'll be back.

An average movie theater. For opening day for a supposed blockbuster (Cloverfield) it was definitely on a smallish screen. The seating slope was also way too gradual, meaning the Jolly Green Giant sitting in front of me was on the verge of completely ruining the movie.
Whatever, typical AMC Lowes nonsense. -

What does "comparable" mean?
A theatre is only as good as its films. What does it show, the usual list of 8-10 standard Hollywood flics?

I prefer Regal Union Square. They weren't playing the movie of our choice (The Hangover, just came out last weekend, odd that you're not showing it Regal) so we were forced to 19th. We headed to the basement level to theater 5 which has a tiny screen relative to the long rows of seating that are barely elevated.
All of the pre-movie entertainment was on mute. Not a big deal. But then an extended preview of Bruno came on. Still on mute and the visual was also not working (kept stopping). It was the longest preview I have ever seen but not heard.
Seats are not comfortable either. Regal has got stadium seats and you can lift up the little dividers if you want to snuggle with your honey. Go there if they're showing your flick. -

This theater reminds me of the theater in the "other mall" that I would go to when I was growing up. It wasn't the theater in the "good mall" that was nice, new, and clean, but it still had the new movies and there wasn't as much of a line to get in.
In conclusion, it's a little old/dirty but it gets the job done just fine. -

We (da wife and I) decided to escape the madness of 34th and 42nd St. theatres so we selected this AMC one. We arrived around 2pm (last friday) and hardly anyone was there. No lines. Traditional box office located on the street.. so we had to purchase tix outside. Tix was $12 each.
The usher ripped our tix and told us what theatre to go to. We got our seats then I went to concession while the misses went to the bathroom (the bathroom is located in the basement level opposed to where our theatre was :-/) @ the concession I got a hot dog and a medium size of bottled water for $7.75.
The movie we seen was Benjamin Button. The screen was big which allowed us to sit all the way in the back. My girlfriend complained that the sound sucked though.. id expect great surround sound at a movie theatre like this. We couldn't cuddle because the armrest didn't flip up like the other AMC theatre (on 42nd St.) We sat through a 3 hour movie which got uncomfy after a while.
The theatre gets 2 stars because of the sub-par experience. -

Movie ticket prices are standardized across the city at a current fixed rate of $12.50 per person. Given that fact, it makes sense to choose a movie theater that is modern and not particularly crowded if one wants to get the most bang for their buck. Unfortunately in that regard, your money will not be well spent here. It was like going to a movie theater from the 1980s. No stadium seating and tight rows with little in the way of vertical drop made for a less than comfortable theater. The sound was not superior either. Surprisingly though, there were more people in this cineplex than in my neighborhood's theater which is considerably more modern. Over all, I wouldn't go back to this location to see a movie.

They should just gut this place and modernize. It's not horrible, but if paying $12.50 to see a modern, high tech film - you want to be blown away by the screen and sound. Instead, I was blinded by the light of the person in front of me, who couldn't go five minutes without checking her text messages. She deserved a head smack, but the theater's angle didn't help. It's ironic, but the steepest things here are the escalators to lower level and the prices.

Pretty horrible.. even by NYC theater standards. Dirty, uncomfortable seats.. small screen.. nasty lobby.. and even worse restrooms. I felt like I had fleas crawling all over me after I left the place. Fortunately, the movie I saw was really good so it overshadowed some of the trauma of visiting this establishment. I think a full demolition and renovation is loooong overdue.

Manhattan, NY
I only come here when desired movie is not playing at Regal. Woohoo, each time this place gives me something new to complain about! This is the first place I have ever watched an off-centered movie. At first I thought maybe it was done on purpose by the art director, placing the title slightly to the left...then the opening credits...then the subtitles...yes at this point it became painfully obvious that this was not done on purpose. Oh well, I'm sure the left side of a motion picture isn't all that important. But what's with their lack of inclined seating? Half of the screen was blocked by a man's head who, when standing, was no taller than 6'. Sticky floors, dirty bathrooms, shoddy audio, and morose workers should give you a good idea of the dump you'll have to endure to watch your next rated R movie in Manhattan.
