It's been 9 years, and Ambrosia Bakery is still keeping me happy!
I mostly go now just for the nostalgia of it. A family tradition I wish I still had. My almost mother in law to be passed away & we used to go here all the time for coffee & a pastry to spend quality time together & always always always for every birthday, anniversary, or holiday, we'd pick out like 4 or 5 desserts. It was so much fun.
Whenever I'm sad, I head over to Ocean Ave, sometimes just get a mocha since I've given up desserts and drive into St. Francis Woods, park in front of their former house & reminisce. I always feel better
If I bring you to my special little cafe Ambrosia, you'll know I love you. It's that kind of place.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Ok guys, here is my plea to you: Go frequent Ambrosia Bakery so I can live vicariously through you!
Yes, sad to say that Ambrosia Bakery is no longer within my reach [insert silent whimpers here]. I used to work down the street from this marvel, unfortunately I haven't had a chance to come back since I live in the East Bay and I'm hardly ever in the area that occupies Ambrosia. However, if you want the run down, well, then you got it:
-The brewed coffee is awesome, which makes the café au lait wonderful.
-The teas are pretty standard but gets the job done.
-Never had the food (the actual food) but I it looked and smelled pretty good.
-The only negative is that they don't take card transactions if it's under $5.00, however, what makes up for that is they do a honesty policy, which allows you to pay later.
-The bakery treats = MY WEAKNESS! That's right guys, go tell yourself "Screw the diet man, I'm gonna grab myself a delicious cookie, muffin, cupcake, etc" (whatever you fancy). However, if that makes you hate yourself then I've got another proposition for you...have a nice hard work out first and then march right into Ambrosia. That way you can just say "Hey I've earned this scrumptious red velvet cupcake or the super airy triple chocolate mousse, that just oozes richness". Just do it! I've also had the pistachio cake, the fruit tart, the chocolate chip cookie, the strawberry cheese cupcake, the carrot cupcake, the mocha cake, the...uhhh ok, you get the point, and yes, this list can go onnnnn.
All of the things I've had here belong on the top of your list. I've even brought several goodies home for the bf, yeah I know he's spoiled. So, go on and spoil yourself! -

Strawberry shortcake; pretty darn good and my Mom loved it (birthday)...but who doesn't like a birthday cake.
Okay, I think this place is worth it because of the like rustic feel I get when I come in, look at the gleaming fruit tarts, cleanly made cakes, and the simplistic seating arrangment along with the view of this small Ocean shopping plaza.
It's nice and cozy and people who come here tend to me on the mellow side.
Friendly staff~! -
Review from Sofia R.
Craving dessert, some friends and I walked over to this little bakery because it was close by and because we know that it's a good place.
Under normal circumstances, I would order the princess slice but I wanted to try something new and I wanted the friends visiting to get that for themselves. Brasilia sounded promising because it's a layer cake with hazelnut and chocolate. Everyone else got princess cake, mocha dream, and raspberry mousse respectively.
All of the pieces were so pretty! And each was delicious. My favorite is still the princess cake because it's soft and delicate in both taste and texture. The mousse is good if you like tart flavors. The brasilia is good if you like nutella or fererro rocher (the cake is rather dense and a little dry though). Mocha dream seemed standard.
Good place!3 Previous Reviews: Show all »

We picked up a half sheet Tiramisu on Thursday afternoon that was going to be a surprise for 2 birthday people, and not eaten until Saturday. It was packed in a cooler and taken on a on a 7+ hour journey to a dry desert like location, and then sat there until after dinner on Saturday.
Amazingly, it stayed totally intact, including the flowers and writing. The birthday boy and girl were surprised and everyone really seemed to enjoy it. The cake part was more dense than I like, but I prefer really light, fluffy cakes. Everything else was delicious. -

I thought Ambrosia Bakery was okay, nothing special. I tried the red velvet cupcake, where the frosting was too sweet and the cake portion was really dense. So far I think Susie's cupcake red velvet cake is still the best. I also tried the princess cake which is better at Schuberts Bakery in my opinion.
Maybe I got the wrong dessert? Although the workers were nice and friendly. -

This place makes some bomb ass desserts and cakes. My mom used to love this place a lot and always bought us stuff for our car rides back to Southern California for school.
This place has gotten a little more expensive than we like so we don't go as frequently but their pastries are a thing of beauty! -

I first experienced the ambrosia bakery because I was in the mood for sweets and since then have been back several times. They have great baked goods of all sorts. I wish they had more of a variety or made more of the selection they do have because when I walk in there has always been an empty space or two. The cakes and cookies are delicious however my favorite are there amazing eclairs! I think that they could change the store a bit to make it more inviting and more of a place you would want to stay for a while. Other than those two low points, I think that the staff and baked good are wonderful and it is definitely worth a try.

Yummy. Cute little bakery. Went on Saturday morning before catching the Muni M around the corner.
Blue Berry Muffin [4 of 5] Yummy. Moist and good size. I liked it. I kinda liked it that it was over sized and had a square top.
Croissant [4 of 5] I liked it. I liked the outside layer was crispy and the inside was light and airy. I really think they did a really good job. I actually prefer this place more than Napa's Bouchon for their croissants.
Can't wait to go back. The cakes look pretty amazing. I am interested in tiring the strawberry shortcake, princess cake, and the tiramisu. They had individual sized and larger sized cakes. Yummy. -

Abrosia indeed! My mom picked up their abrosia (chocolate on chocolate!..oooooh yeaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah) cake for my grandma's 90th birthday brunch today. That's right. We ate chocolate cake at brunch! You will too after one bite of this moist traditional chocolate cake. The decoration was exactly what we requested, and the writing was pretty without being too thick. Some traditional chocolate cakes can be dry, but this one was moist with a rich, yet creamier and a touch lighter fudgey frosting than usual. I usually bake our birthday cakes, but if you can't or want an equally satisfying cake, swing by Ambrosia. You will not be disappointed. I am looking forward to trying some of their other treats.

Definitely will be coming back here again whenever i'm in the mood for some delicious cakes and cookies :)
I ordered their Princess cake and their Mango Mousse Cake, and i must say, both were quite divine! The princess cake was light and airy, and the jam they use adds a fruit twist to it. The mousse cake is quite rich and tangy, loaded with that mango flavor.
The staff are quiet adorable and nice as well :) And the atmosphere of the bakery is quite relaxing, especially with the classical music that they play.
Definitely a good place to go whenever you just want to sit and unwind with a cup of coffee and a slice of cake. :) -

This place is so kute!! They had so many treats that I had a hard time figuring out which ones to get. But I ended up getting the tiramisu (an all time favorite of mine), Napoleon, coconut fusion, and fruit tart.
The tiramisu was so good!! It was very light and airy and the chocolate around the actual cake and cream part complimented very well. But i did wish there was more coffee and rum flavor to it.
The fruit tart was also good. The cream was perfect and they put so much fruit on one little tiny tart. It was amazing!
The coconut was good according to my mom as I don't like coconut. And the Napoleon has not yet been eaten but soon will be :)
Overall the pastries are great and I will be back for more. The only downfall I think is the prices...almost $4 for each piece. I can't afford to spoil myself that often. -

I like places that sell slices of cake. It feels like there's more of the good stuff, like a slice of pizza from a big pie, rather than a personal small pie.
The slices here were sort of small. For about $4, you could get a small slice of cake. It was a really dense slice of Ambrosia Cake, but small. Ambrosia cake is chocolate cake with chocolate frosting, wrapped in a strip of clear plastic. The crumb was tender. However, it was missing that wow factor. It didn't speak to me. It didn't even tell me that I was pretty.
The Napoleon cake was also sort of meh. I love custard as much as the next fatty, but after learning to make my own with vanilla bean paste, eating someone else's custard just isn't as fun.
Beware the meter maid that was trolling around the parking meters with her lights, on Veteran's Day, a HOLIDAY. I freaked out because I didn't put money in the meter, ran over to my little car, and as she pulled up behind my little car, I saw that she was casually texting on her phone. In my high pitched, freaked out voice, "ISN'T IT A HOLIDAY????" Meaning, you are not giving me a ticket, are you??
She turned slightly and nodded. But every few feet, she would slow down and make it seem like she was giving out tickets. However, she was just trolling. No tickets. No violations. Just trolling. WHY? Why would anyone do this? -

Best cookie of my life eaten last week at Ambrosia Bakery on Ocean ave.
Their Walnut-pecan-chocolate-chip cookie is the best cookie I've ever had and I'm a cookie monster. It was flat about 4 or 5 inches wide, crunchy from the edge for about 1-2 inches as it gradually got tender towards the middle without any doughyness. The chocolate chips were not too sweet and were still instantly melty...yuuuummmm. The nuts were crushed up small, and you can very much taste the walnut and pecan. I would definitely appreciate some larger chunks of nuts next time though.
I hope they make this cookie everyday! -

A friend got me some individual size cakes for my birthday. My goodness, the pumpkin cake was yummy. Coconut mousse wasn't bad either. Chocolate is a bit dense, but I love their small size!
I would definitely come by here when I get a chance.
I really love the photos that Yelpers have put up. Many varieties! -

Swedish Princess Cake without having to put up with the Clement St traffic (I'm talking to you, Schubert!)? Score!
Thanks to Yelp, I found this place which not only saves me from having to deal with the double parked cars on an already packed Clement St and slow-moving traffic going up Park Presidio from where I live - it actually sells delicious Swedish Princess Cakes which, according to my friend, looks like a giant mochi ball with its layer of green marzipan and powdered sugar.
No more going to Schubert if I could help it - this place is about 10 minutes (easy) ride from where we are and it's just as good. Will be back to try the strawberry sponge cake next! -

Been craving for Princess cake, but did not wanna have to deal with going to Schubert's and the busyness that is Clement street. Did a search on Yelp and found Ambrosia.
They've got a ton on different cakes to choose from. As well as pastries, cookies, eclairs and tarts.
Princess Cake- every bit as good as the Princess cake at Schubert's. White cake, kirsch custard, rasberry, whipped cream and a marzipan top. Craving fulfilled...and very satisfied.
Cappuchino cake- good. not too strong, very light and creamy.
Strawberry cream cake- super light whipped cream and cake and fresh strawberries. so good.
Fruit tart- super good. i actually wanted a smal taste...ended up eating finishing it with just a couple bites. fresh fruit, light custard.
We also bought a couple cheese croissants and a sticky bun. I haven't tried them yet, but they look delish. -

I was here a few months ago with a friend. We were driving down Ocean avenue looking for a coffee shop after grabbing some Vietnamese food. We both fell in love with the variety of desserts. My friend had a coffee and I had a hot green tea with the 5 or so desserts we ordered. We loved all of them. I would definitely come back BUT......
The only gripe that I have with the place is the cashier who had helped us. She had the worst body language and attitude. Rolling eyes, etc. I had to deal with her a few times because I ordered our desserts, asked for more hot water for my tea, and also change to feed the meters. When I had asked her the last time for change. I told her please smile, you need to smile, just keep on smiling. followed by a question of if she was having a bad day. She stayed quiet, handed me the change and smiled.
My friend and I noticed this, what more would the other customers see. Now if a business wants to have a good positive face to it. This girl definitely shouldn't be the front runner or it may cause people to not want to come back regardless of how good the desserts are. I was able to figure out her name when her coworker had called her. Jessica.
I agree with Brian V. on the notion and wouldn't be surprised if it was the same girl he is talking about below. -

This is a review for their WEDDING CAKE SERVICE.
My husband and I custom-designed our cake; we drew out exactly how each layer should look and the exact colors we wanted.
1. Delicious Cake
We then met with Ambrosia's sifu, Keith, 2 months prior to our wedding date. We first tasted the cakes, and the fresh strawberry cake was our clear favorite: extremely fresh fruit, soft moist cake.
2. Professionalism
We then showed Keith our design. He complimented us on our design, then *took out an artist sketch pad* to do a mock up of what our final cake would look like. He was detailed with the dimensions, exact colors, and the choice of layer sizes we should choose for best presentation. He also steered us to the right size sheet cake (for back-of-kitchen cutting and serving = cheaper) to make sure we'll have plenty for our guests.
3. Flawless execution
Keith called me the week before to say he'll deliver the cake himself, and to make sure my florist will be there when he arrives, so he can work with her on a seamless presentation. WOW, that was unexpected! This showed he really cared about his work, and that he wanted our wedding to look beautiful. Unless you have a wedding planner, I believe this is HARD TO FIND!!!
The cake looked beautiful; the colors were exactly how we envisioned, and it had the fun summery personality we wanted to match our event. http://www.yelp.com/bi...
The cake was also delicious. Several guests said it was THE BEST WEDDING CAKE they've had. By far. EVER.
We took the leftover cake home, and it was good even 10+ days later. That's how FRESH it was!!! -

You've made an ever lasting impression on me. Not only was this cupcake beautiful (check out the picture I took) but so moist and tasty. I liked the creme on top too. MMMM! MMMmm mmmm Amborisa!

I *heart* Ambrosia. I would have been deprived of their deliciousness if I hadn't gotten a job across the street from this place five years ago. I get a coffee every morning I work, and likely a pastry as well... Usually, the ham & cheese croissant, chocolate croissant or pesto twist... Twist my arm, just a little bit, and I'd get one of everything and pass out from buttery goodness overload. On health alert days, I get a bran muffin. LOL
On special occasions, I've often bought a cake from here. Their minis are so adorable, and light and delicious. I've never tasted a princess cake anywhere else, but I love theirs. Twice now, I've had it as surprise birthday cakes.
I get lunch here too when I'm too lazy to bring my own lunch (or if what I've brought isn't appealing) and it's alright. The deli aspect isn't their strong suit, but it suffices when I need something savory and quick for lunch. I think the salads are a better deal than the sandwiches if you're considering fullness factor, but if you'd like to sample their breads before buying a whole loaf, go for a sandwich all the way. The veggie burger is yummy with teriyaki sauce.
Oh, and be sure to bring cash if what you're getting is under 5 bucks. -

Came here with the gf to get a birthday cake for the best friend on his birthday! ended up choosing the dream cake which was chocolate with chocolate with more chocolate.
I was excited to try the cakes and desserts from here, but was somewhat disappointed because the texture just wasn't too great and the chocolate wasn't as strong as expected. but will try this place again sometime soon. Got my eye on the cappuccino cake though! -

So fresh, so real. (review finished) KIDDING!
Cozy and quaint, this place deserves a 5. I may just be lucky whenever I come in but it never seems to be "crackin'"/too busy. It's definitely a bakery one can rely on after morning walks at Stern Grove up the street. A pastry and a cup of fresh joe. Perrrfection. This place is very SF meets "Hometown Glory".
Very close to SFSU/Stonestown if you're up for a change and if you're a Cocola/Starbucks usual. Their pastries are always fresh, their coffee is always up to par and the service is never near to disappointing. They also make some mean sandwiches! I really like their crab salad sandwich on a whole wheat bun. Although rather simple, it's made right!
Their pastries are on the "pricey" side but as frugal as I am, I don't mind dropping $3+ on an itty bitty Tira! With that said, their Tiramisu is divine and their 3 layer chocolate cake is to "try" for. It isn't too rich and the texture is so velvety. Definitely my top two faves.
When you get the chance, try their Red Velvet cupcakes. They don't always sell 'em but when you do make sure to try one! You won't be disappointed (the icing is the highlight: isn't too cream cheesy).
I love sitting at the window, perfectly intimate especially if you're having coffee with someone and it's a great seat for people watching. Everyone does it, no shame here ;) -

My go to bakery for my quick dessert craving.....in fact I just went there to pick up their moist not so sweet dream cake this morning....yumm....yumm...
Been going there for the past several years for birthday cakes or just a slice of cake...and love their chicken salad sandwich.
Whenever I have their cake at birthday, guests will ask where I get it. All their cakes are great but my fave are dream cake and strawberry shortcake.
The staffs and the lady owner are nice people. -

Came here on a Sunday about an hour before they closed. I was hoping they had some Princess cake slices left but they were all sold out. They had very few items left so I ended up leaving with a tiramisu slice and a blueberry muffin. The tiramisu was really good actually and reasonably priced. It had the right amount of flavor. The blueberry muffin wasn't that good. I would pass on the muffins here.
The reason why I'm giving it only 3 stars is because the young latin girl helping me seemed bitchy. Like she was itching to get off her shift. And for some reason, when this particular customer came in, the latin girl and her other coworker looked at each other and started giggling and rolling their eyes. Hella unprofessional and rude.
I'll come back to try the princess cake despite the bad customer service. -

I came here for the first time during the early morning before heading to campus. I ordered the white chocolate mocha which it was rich and not overly sweet. One of the best mochas I've ever had! (I just wish it was a bit stronger, I need that morning kick to be able to focus in class) Highly recommended. But onto the best part...
PASTRIES!!
Pesto Twist bread: Flaky, buttery, but not enough pesto for my taste. Size wise, it's a bit too small to be satisfying.
Bear claw: a bit sweet but still good.
Bran muffin: moist but tasted like your average muffin.
I enjoyed all of the flavors of their pastries but I felt like they were too small for me.
Bonus: they have fresh bagel sandwiches wrapped up and ready to go while you order your coffee.
I'll be there soon :) -

Fabulous muffins. Super moist and I would only put this bakery at 1-$ instead of 2..
I had a blueberry muffin and if I found one more blueberry I was tempted to think I ordered blueberries with a little cake thrown in between.. LOVED IT.
Parents both had bran muffins and let me tell you, mother is a huge bran muffin fan but they have to be just right and this one definitely made the cut!!
(side note: they let us use their bathrooms, ALWAYS worth another half star!!) -

They do beautiful princess cakes, but their pastries are a nice complement to your Saturday morning black coffee.
Cinnamon twists, Swedish danish, cheese danish, chocolate croissants, bear claws. I tried a little of each. Nothing was overly sweet or too buttery, and everything was fresh.
It's a clean, simple, neighborhood bakery. If anything, go just to support your local businesses. -

I was looking for a cafe to meet my friend for lunch around SFSU and if you know the area you know there aren't many good choices. I came across this bakery on yelp and after reading the reviews decided to try it!
The staff is very friendly and the place is welcoming, clean and I could tell there were some regulars but what impressed me is the diversity of people that had lunch there. A group of young women, a couple with their baby girl, an older couple, a few other friends meeting...it was just a comfortable vibe.
I had the avocado and cheese sandwich. It was good, nothing extraordinary but I could tell the ingredients were fresh and clean. Now to the good part, we decided to share a piece of chocolate cake and a raspberry mouse.....!!!! AMAZING. Just blew me away. I generally don't like cakes or pastries from most places because they are dense and too sweet. These ones here are light, with just the right amount of sweetness and not to mention beautiful!!!
If ever I need a cake or a tart or just a slice of heaven, I will be sure to stop by this place and no longer will buy from super markets (even whole foods) or the trendy bakeries in my neighborhood. -

Wow! Amazing cake! I ordered a 8" tiramisu cake for my brothers birthday. Was definitely a sweet treat. They had a large selection of different cakes, mainly 2 sizes. 6" and 8". The 8" cake was just under $30.
I also bought a cappuccino cake for my girlfriends birthday the next day. I think the tiramisu tasted better. The cappuccino cake was kinda one dimensional tasting. The tiramisu had different flavors incorporated into it, and the tid bits of chocolate were sinful.
I see myself coming back to try the princess cake, and for special occasion cakes. Yum! -

This review is just for their princess cake. I've never had marzipan before I went here but it was just okay. It wasn't spectacular though. The cake itself was a white cake so it didn't have much flavor. The raspberry center and marzipan sugar top balanced out the flavor but I don't think I would ever crave this cake again to be honest. It just tastes like sugar on top of a plain flavored cake...

Review from Meena N.
Everything looks really delicious here so I was excited to come after I went to a dentist appointment because I was soooo hungry. I make it a point to get a croissant at every bakery so I got one. Good! Flaky, tender on the inside, just what I like in a croissant. I honestly feel if a bakery can do a croissant right, they can make all the other pastries easily.
I also got a cheese danish and it was really good as well, a good amount of cream cheese in the middle and everything was balanced well. Not too sweet, but just enough to make it a sweet pastry instead of a regular pastry with some sweet cream cheese in the middle.
Their sweets look delectable, so I can't wait to come back one day and check out the other sweets, especially their princess cake. The service was friendly and helpful. -

I've been drinking coffee for as long as I can remember. Even when I was a little kid. My dad's fondness for coffee was contagious (to the point that he had his own coffee shop once) and that love rubbed off on me. I gave up caffeinated beverages a few months ago but I'll occasionally allow myself a decaf, even though there is still a tiny bit of caffeine in those drinks. One of my favorite pastimes with my dad is discovering and trying new cafes. He lives fairly close to Ambrosia and took me here one day.
He had a fat free vanilla latte while I ordered a decaf irish creme latte and we purchased a few small cookies they had. My latte was arguably the best one I'd ever had...it had the right amount of kick and strength without being too bitter. I was in love!
The location is cute and the girls working behind the counter were friendly. Their brewed coffee must be great as well, because many patrons kept getting refill after refill. I'll definitely try their pastries the next time I'm shooting the breeze with dad again :) -
Review from Brian V.
I have a lot of scorn for Ambrosia Bakery so I will keep the review short and scathing. I have heard people talk about Ambrosia cakes and I often pass it when driving by Ocean. After shopping at Stonestown with KVu and learning how to operate a foreign concept such as a reversible dress belt, we stopped by here. I ordered the 3 layer chocolate cake and a chocolate disc whilst the seelenfreund ordered a pistachio cake. My cake was good. It was not terribly sweet where it sensitized your teeth as Safeway select cake slices do. It wasn't the greatest slice I have ever had but it was well over average. The cookie was okay. They used a nutty base which I am not fond of and also, the cookie was crispy instead of chewy; I prefer chewy cookies. KVu felt her pistachio cake was refreshing on the palette. I recluse myself from reviewing it as I do not like pistachio in any other form than the nut. God did not intend for pistachios to be eaten in any other form than the one of using both thumbs to pop open the shell and tossing the little offering into your mouth.
HOWEVER, our service was pretty shitty. The one female who served us, in high school I estimate, exuded the worse costumer service. When I asked what the various cakes were, it seemed like it was so much trouble to answer as she sighed and rolled her eyes. She had the worst body language. Her style screamed a maven of Jordan, Dunks and all shoes that had fat tongues so that she could tuck the jean behind them and I could think of nothing more evil than to just stomp on her shoes with dirt laden steel toe boots. A simple "thank you, have a good day" was greeted by a stare and silence. I am used to being around unsavory scum, and I enjoy their company, but they gotta at least have charm. She was devoid of it. I pray Santa stuffs her stockings with improper sized shoes this year or better yet, enrollment at CCSF for public speaking and human behavior courses.
