My girlfriend and I made our first trip to Amber for a low-key, but still nice, Valentine's Day dinner. It was an excellent choice.

A couple of weeks before the big day we purchased a Livingsocial deal for $36. It included two appetizers, two sushi rolls, and two main courses, with a few specific items off limits. There were still plenty of options to choose from, though.

We shared everything, starting with the steamed shrimp dumplings and the Thai spiced wrap. The wraps were excellent, though a little bit messy. The pineapple chunks added a great zesty flavor.

Next we moved on to the sushi: eel avocado roll and a spicy tuna roll. I preferred the spicy tuna and thought the eel didn't really taste like much, but both were good and were obviously made freshly at their sushi bar.

Our mains were sangria crispy duck and pineapple fried rice. The duck was the highlight of the meal. The meat was tender, the skin was crispy (as advertised!) and the sauce was thick and flavorful. I'd even classify it more as a glaze than a sauce. Whatever name you decide to give it, you'll call it delicious!

We passed on dessert (at least until later, wink wink) and strode happily home. We'll definitely be back to Amber again.

P.S. The decor is cool, too. The rock wall is awesome, and the overhead lights look like logs that have been sliced in half.

    P.P.S. Excellent service too!

Nice place and decent service but the food is pretty darn bad. Had the Birds Nest and the Red Snapper.

Their sushi rolls aren't bad (hence the stars). But those other two dishes warrant avoiding the place.

My boyfriend and I had tried Amber on 6th avenue last year for our 3 year anniversary. We became fans of the sushi place after we bought a great Groupon deal. A few months later we saw a Living Social deal that was to Amber but on 3rd avenue! We instantly thought this would be romantic to do on Valentines day!

The Living Social deal had included two appetizers, two sushi rolls, and two main courses. The exceptions were some of the items on the menu, but Amber did not limit you from having some delicious stuff! My boyfriend and I decided that we would each get different things and share! After all, what's the point of getting the same things if we only live once? Try anything you can when you have the chance!

So anyways, I ordered the Rock Shrimp as an appetizer and my boyfriend ordered the calamari! I am obsessed with the rock shrimp and absolutely love it! The calamari was also tasty as well! They do not skimp on the portions for the appetizer, you get enough to fill you up. I also would like to add that $36 dollars for two people and the amount of food we got was SO worth it!

The next part of our meal was the sushi rolls! I ordered salmon avocado and my boyfriend ordered shrimp tempura. While we had been waiting for our sushi, a couple sat next to us and ordered about 10 minutes after our sushi order was put in. The waiter brought them sushi before us and it looked like ours. This couple was claiming that they ordered the same exact thing as we did and kept on eating the sushi. All of a sudden, the waiter comes up to the table and says they made a mistake and gave the couple our rolls. I was pissed because I knew the girl was lying and after a few bites you could see her whispering about how it wasn't her roll. I thought that was pretty trashy. Whatever! We got our sushi rolls and they were fresh and tasty!

Two main courses: The two main courses were any courses you wanted (again, with two exceptions) which I don't remember what they were! My boyfriend got the ribs as his main course and I got the hot stone chicken dish. Now, I just want everyone to know, I didn't know you had to cook the meal yourself at the table. I had never done this before and really didn't like the whole process. I would have rather ordered something else!!!

The waiters were not attentive, they were all over the place, and the service wasn't. Good food, sucky service!

I would recommend going there on a date for sure!

Our time living in NYC is quickly coming to an end. We are moving to Florida at the end of March (and yes, of COURSE I will continue blogging and reviewing there). The days of a sushi restaurant on every block will be a thing of the past. This is one of the things that Gabriel and I will REALLY miss (as you can read about on our blog http://byebyeny.wordpr...) about living here, along with the plethora of livingsocial, groupon, scoutmob type deals that are offered in this city.
We bought a deal for Amber that included 2 apps, 2 classic rolls and 2 entrees for (If I remember correctly) $30 and went to cash in last night. We were surprised to see that it was very crowded on a Tuesday night, and wondered how many others were there with coupons. We actually overheard the waitress ask the next table over from us if they had one, so it must be the reason it's so packed. The service was very friendly and knowledgable but definitely on the slow side and we had about 5-10 minutes of waiting between each plate that was served.
We, as always, decided to share everything. We started with the BBQ ribs and the shrimp and veggie tempura starter. Just to be totally honest, I completely forgot to take a pic of the ribs so this one is a pic I found online. It actually came with a small side salad with a few slices of (presumably, canned) peaches. The ribs were on the fatty side, but crisp and flavorful. The tempura was so-so. Definitely not as light and flakey as it should have been, but the generous pieces of zucchini and eggplant sort of made up for that.
Our 2 rolls were the highlight for me. One was spicy scallop, which had large scallops in each piece rather than the chopped up kind that a lot of sushi places serve. The other was snowcrab and tobiko which was a little too salty for me, but fresh and a bit different that the 'classic' rolls I'd usually order. They came with the seaweed on the outside as I requested it, and were tightly and expertly wrapped.
For our entrees we had the chicken with basil sauce and brown rice and the bird's nest. Hmm. These were somewhat disappointing. I couldn't detect any basil flavor on the chicken - just an overly-sweet, orange-colored sauce. The eggplant in this dish was really tasty though, it kind of saved the dish from being a flop. The bird's nest was totally the opposite of the impressive display I'd anticipated. At most restaurants, it's served in a beautiful noodle-y basket but here it was a (presumably pre-made) bowl that looked (and tasted) a lot like styrofoam. The chicken, shrimp and veggies inside were fine, but certainly nothing unique or noteworthy.
Overall, I suppose I'd go back for the sushi, but probably not for the entrees or anything to out of the ordinary. The sushi was quite good- but not spectacular...and given that I pass about 20 other sushi places on my way to Amber, I guess the likelihood of a return visit is pretty slim.

"Where the hell am I going to find a legit sushi spot on the Upper East Side with a good lunch special?"

I guess Amber was the best choice.

The place itself is really nice. The staff was friendly and super fast. The "A" in the window initially led me in.

The lunch special was $9.95 for 2 rolls which included Miso soup and a salad...not bad. I had the Salmon Avocado and the Shrimp Tempura. The Salmon was ehhh....The avocado was waaaaaay too mushy which made it taste like a wet sock. The shrimp was good...

Would I be back to Amber? Maybe. However, I wouldn't go out of my way for it.

    Word!

Love it here. My husband and BFF had huge, delicious sushi situations and our appetizer salads and soup were great.  Green tea was aggressively authentic!  I had the crispy tangerine chicken which was just so tasty.  One suggestion: I'd like them to remove two tables from the dining area so we could have a little more space.  Ultimately though the service was great and the food is terrific - just a super choice!  Really happy we ate there and will be back!

I went with my BF on a thursday evening around 6. We had purchased the livingsocial deal for $36 which included two appetizers, 2 sushi rolls, and 2 entrees. The fine print on the deal recommends a reservation but we called them while we were on the way and they said it was ok. The decor is very nice, and the service is attentive and fast. The food was veryyy tasty and they give you large portions, we were not able to finish anything so we packed it to go. I would definitely come back.

I must say, I was a little skeptical at first about this place because of the reviews I read, but I'm soooo happy I gave them a chance.  Once I stepped into the restaurant, I was impressed. I loved the decor, the music, the vibe in general.  And usually restaurants seem to neglect there restrooms, but both of there restrooms are fabulous!!!!

So we started off with the duck spring rolls which were good, but nothing in comparison to the broiled mussels which were simply DELICIOUS.  For sushi I had the perfect match which was pretty good and my bf had the golden dragon which was also pretty good.

The service was excellent, the waitress was so friendly and attentive.  My only complaints were that the table was pretty small and the prices are RIDICULOUS, but we did have a groupon which helped out a little.  I would definitely go back, but probably after pay day:)

This is a really good sushi restaurant! The Perfect Match roll was delicious (especially the super white tuna), as was the steamed buns with roasted duck (the duck was crispy and with  a yummy hoisin dipping sauce). The spicy tuna roll and crab with avocado roll were very good. The tuna sushi and sashimi were very fresh. We also enjoyed the ribs.

The only negatives were the fried kumamoto oyster (yuck, I prefer them raw) and the tuna with jalapeño roll (way too spicy). The meal was also very pricey but then again this is sushi on the Upper East Side.

My friend and I ventured to the UES the other night because I had a Groupon to Amber that was about to expire.

And am I glad we did! Even on a Tuesday night, the place was hoppin'. We told our waitress immediately after we were seated that we had the Groupon and she was helpful and showed us which specialty rolls were covered and which weren't.

I started with a delicious cocktail (though I can't remember the name of it) that had rum, ginger liqueur, lime juice and seltzer (or something bubbly). Then we ordered 2 specialty rolls (Perfect Match and another I can't remember the name of but that was very good) and 2 regular rolls (tuna/avocado and yellowtail/jalapeño). Everything was super fresh and absolutely delicious.

The service was perfect, the food was amazing and the decor was beautiful. Sure, it was a little on the pricey side (which didn't affect me since I had a Groupon), but what else do you expect on the UES of NYC? I'd be more than willing to pay full price because it was THAT good.

Just terrible, Amber is the worst sort of Asian fusion.  Beware any place that serves sushi, thai food, indian food, and steak. Subpar fish covered in sweet sauces. I am very surprised this place is so packed.

We visited yesterday for the lunch special: a drink, a bowl of Miso soup, a salad with dressing and two sushi rolls.

My friend's crab sushi had a piece of shell in it. I didn't enjoy the raisins on the salad; they just didn't seem to fit.

I had a Potato Tempura Roll and a Vegetable Roll. Both were delicious and the soy sauce (which tasted homemade) really augmented it.

Now, I'm home in RI and realize that when we asked them to split the check, they charged us both the full price. Instead of $23 each we paid $46 each. I wrote it off to an expensive New York lunch but figured out when I got home that something wasn't right.

Off to have AXP refuse the charges, unfortunately.

Nice fusion restaurant to run into. We ate a sashimi salad, crispy dumplings, and sangria crispy duck. That was three countries eaten in one sitting.

The overall feel was nice and you can have a conversation without having to yell. I like it and if I am ever around the area, it'd be a place to consider.

Can you say "overpriced?" What you pay for is pretty much the nice decorations, ambiance, fancy cocktails, and date-night sort of appeal. Take your girl here if you're trying to impress her, but don't come here if you're looking to actually eat with her.

Green caviar is really not as exciting as it sounds, by the way. And really, how could you be "out" of the green tea martini on a Friday night at 8pm?

I thoroughly enjoyed my time at Amber. Very trendy, very cute, very nice ambiance overall. There's patio seating for your enjoyment during the warmer months. There are also a few high tables that border the patio, which is where I sat. This is nice because you get the best of both worlds, as you're indoors and outdoors, essentially. Anyway, let me get on to the reason you're probably reading this review. The Food!

The sushi was really really good. We had crab, tuna, salmon, eel, and caviar in the form of the Perfect Match, Haku-zushi, Spider, and Kamikaze rolls (I believe... not sure about the last 2 - my memory escapes me a bit). The bottom line is everything was really good so I'm sure whatever you choose is a safe bet. The drinks are good too and pretty. We tried a couple of the specialty drinks and I was very pleased.

If you're on the fence about this place, definitely go! You won't regret it. Can't wait to go back!

Had a google coup for $25 for $50 here.  Got 2 fancy rolls (angry lobster and another one with eel tempura and shrimp).  Rolls were HUGE and sauces were great, but would have been pretty pricey without the coupon.  Also split the fried whole snapper.  I don't feel bad spending $20 on a whole snapper since its close to that everywhere, and the pineapple sauce went really well. Don't forget to eat out the fish cheeks.  Would recommend going, but it is pricey without the coupon, so keep your eyes out for those.  PS. our dinner experience was significantly enhanced by a drunk older gentleman at the table next to us and his young dinner companion...so we might be biased.

Great sushi.  Fresh, generous slices of fish.  I had yellowtail, Eel and Fluke.   The service was alert, friendly and helpful.  The room was a little dark for my taste but not offensively so.  Next time I'll eat outside.
However, I was using a Groupon, and when I submitted my certificate and received my final bill, I saw that a tip (two times the tax) WAS ALREADY ADDED to my check by the manager.
Under ordinary circumstances, I would have loudly protested this but since the service and food were both good and I see myself returning, I paid the final check.
BE AWARE OF THIS if you plan on using a groupon.

Eel Avocado roll still had bones in it.

Field Greens Salad only had 1 cherry tomato in it and some raisins.
I'm grateful that I could get my lettuce fix but the salad is lacking.
Considering giving it 3 stars for that reason, but "A-OK" isn't how I feel. "Meh. I've experienced better," is more like it.

Fresh and delicious sushi selection. I love their wine list and find delicious choices for non-sushi lovers. The lettuce wraps were amazing as a starter. Some Special Rolls are rather pricey, however, I still find myself going back for the freshness and satisfying size of the rolls. Highly recommend it, however don't expect a low bill.

I came here with my friend, who wanted a hip, young sushi place to meet some old friends. That, it provided. I would only come here for the atmosphere, which is chill and I suppose "cool." But not the food, which was bland and filling at best and overpriced and boring at worst.
I'm not here to bash Amber, though. Just don't get the tempura vegetables. I love the tempura veggies back at my regular sushi dig, but I couldn't even finish mine, and I was hungry.
The three girls I went with had no complaints about their food, but they stuck with sushi. I'd give this place another shot, but only after exploring many other restaurants.

Amber reminds me of how problematic the Asian fusion wave can be. There is no real fusion. The restaurant simply makes a few Japanese dishes, a few Chinese dishes, a few Vietnamese dishes, a few Thai dishes.

The interior design of the restaurant is swanky; it certainly tries to cater to the visual taste of the local clientelle. The service is also friendly and efficient.

Various aspects of the decor along with the language being spoken by some of the staff lead me to believe that this is a Chinese-owned establishment. The restaurant also has a sushi bar. The menu includes various Vietnamese-inspired and Thai-inspired items. As occurs with other Asian fusion establishments, there is no real fusion all all. Instead, they make a little bit of this and a little bit of that, but none of it  is well executed.

The potstickers/pan-fried dumplings were actually deep fried and the meat had a strange flavor. I actually chose not to continue eating them. The vegetable spring rolls were fine. How bad can they be? The chicken teriyaki was a simple grilled chicken with a sprinkling of teriyaki sauce and vegetables. I can make a better chicken teriyaki at home. The pad thai was insipid. How can I Thai dish be insipid?

The saving grace of the evening was tangerine/orange-flavored chicken. It was decent. However, I certaintly don't have to go to a swanky UES establishment for something I can just as soon find at a food court or neighborhood Chinese take away.

All of these comments make me suspect that my move across the East River has made me more demanding when it comes to Asian cuisine.

It's a good date place, dim lighting and modern. They also have outdoor seating in the Summer.

I find that I don't frequent Amber as much after they stopped serving the crispy crab cup appetizer and their Lycheetini's are super sweet and pineapply. I'm also not pleased with their deceptive Happy Hour signage by the door advertising $5 Frozen Greentea Margaritas seven days a week when the offer is only good during weekdays. They are, however, delicious. Frozen yet creamy consistency, not too sweet and packs a punch.

Their sushi's are fresh and their spicy rolls are delicious and wonderfully spicey. But all their sushi's come ala cart, no complimentary salads or soups here in case you're wondering.  They also have teriaki's and other Pan Asian fare but I usually stick to the sushi.

The service is either very good or poor depending on the server. If you hate restaurants filled young families with bratty spoiled UES children, do not eat there before 8pm on the weekends no matter how hungry you are.

My friend had a groupon here otherwise we probably wouldn't be frequenting a place that serves 15$ rolls of sushi.  That said, it was some pretty damn good sushi and was just the right amount of food.  We treated ourselves to dessert because of the groupon and it was outstanding.  The crepe was made up of 20 paper thin crepes and radically re-conceptualized what a crepe should taste like (yes, its that good!).  The chocolate dessert was also good, and everything was artfully plated and presented.  Good work!

Recently, I was lucky enough to scamper into this place on a date.  The lovely gentleman I was with was craving the citrus salmon carpaccio, so we fled towards the city.

We sat precariously inside/outside which was nice because finally it wasn't raining.  The one problem with the place is they want to pack it full of people (obviously......) so the tables are fit for a child's tea party.  I guess it helps keep portion control for us food hoarders.

We ordered the citrus salmon carpaccio, steamed veggie dumplings, edamame, salmon tuna rollover roll, crunchy spicy salmon roll, triple toro roll, spicy sea scallop roll, and *I think* the spider roll.  SOOOOOOO not enough space on the table.  I would say the best things out of the bunch were the carpaccio, the rollover roll, and the scallop roll.  Everything was bangin tho.  I just know I'll be craving those three things within a week.  Or am I already craving them....?

Their bellini was good and so was their sake, but for the amount of waiters approaching our table and the fact that we were literally up against the door, they still had a little trouble getting my date's second bottle of sake to him in a timely fashion.  Of course they apologized profusely.....clearly it wasn't a damper on the evening....and i'm not the kind of jerk that doesn't realize you can't remember everything all the time.  So its fine.  They're still decently attentive.  I wasn't searching for water parched like I was 4 days into the desert or anything like that.  I just felt like you all needed to know the detailed play by play of the evening.

So, I'd say hook yourself up with some salmon from this place and feed your inner grizzly bear.

I have been to this location 2x for lunch. I cannot rate their hot food entrees. All of that being said, I really enjoy the lunch special option. I opt for the $10 special which includes: 2 sushi rolls, soup, and salad. Eating in def has its perks because you feel like you are having a 3 course meal. If you opt for the hot entree lunch specials you get: salad, soup, and a hot app. Great deal and nice staff. Gets crowded during lunch, but they will try to accomodate you.

Used my groupon here last night and was so happy I bought that groupon! I'll definitely be returning sans groupon very soon! I got two special rolls and they were delicious. They also have sapporo on tap, which is always beats cans/ bottles that are at all the other sushi places in the hood.

Great area, great setting, great sushi. Reserved a table via http://opentable.com and the staff was right on point with my directions. I requested a quiet spot as this was a date and there would be a lot of catching up and getting to know each other.

What to expect. When you walk in you'll immediately notice the upbeat setting with a trendy look to the place. The staff immediately recognized my reservation and took us to the back end of the restaurant which was nicely lit and a great setting for conversation and dining. The sushi was EXTREMELY FRESH and if the other restaurants are much the same I would highly recommend them as well. The preparation and show of the entrée put together were very stylish and was perfect for a party of two. My only knock, and the reason I am dismissing this as it was my first and only time there, was the slow service. We weren't sure which person was our server and it was quite sometime before someone checked on us for a drink refill as well as critique of the food.

Aside from that it was a great eat, reasonably priced and I will definitely be dining there again!

Not a bad sushi option for locals on the UE. Sushi quality is above average and I love the fact that they have King Salmon sushi.....it melts in your mouth like butter.  That is my fav and cant be found in too many places.

Ambiance and decor is top notch too.

Disclaimer: We went here right after we closed on our Co-op so I might not have been thinking straight when we saw the prices in the just emptied wallets we carried.

Does Manhattan need another over-priced sushi joint?  I don't think so.  The sushi is good.  The drinks were good.  The bill was not.  I think there is better sushi else where, but we were in the area looking at couches for the said new co-op.  I would not make the trip down there for Amber again, if I was in the area, maybe, but not willing.

The decor is nice, but I don't like it when the decor vaults the prices.

Restrooms were nice, good decor, well stocked, 3.5 Flushes.

The best part about this place was the decor. In the back room, there is a wall made entirely of tiny rocks with candles nestled in little nooks and crannies. My zen contemplation of this lovely ambiance helped to distract me from the shrieks of a crowd of UES NYC Prep/Super Sweet 16 wannabes taking up half the room. The Amber staff made a valiant effort to shush these girls, but it wasn't going to happen. I must be in the background of about 14 Facebook albums of "(name)'s 16th bday omgggg so awesomeeeeee!."

Anyways. I'd imagine that doesn't happen every night. Moving on.

Cocktails - necessary addition to shriek-blocking meditation. It was vibrantly red and really unique and delicious (and just strong enough). I'm not really a sushi person, but I had their toro and it was quite tasty. I had the Crispy Tangerine Chicken as an entree - awesome! Huge portion!

I enjoyed, I'll be back, hopefully with fewer teenage girls and more zen.

Great food, The prices are a bit much.

The pineapple rice was served in a pineapple, how cool!

Sushi is 4 star, could be a little fresher tasting.

~Indian pancakes (Appetizer) are GREAT, this is weird given the place is a sushi restaurant!!!

I don't eat sushi, but my friend and boyfriend love it so I caved in and agreed to go here.

They loved their sushi and I had the bird's nest, not very daring I know but it was good.

I am a [self-proclaimed] huge sushi buff and I've had my share of Upper East Side sushi... that said, Amber is definitely "good" but not "great" and absolutely overpriced.  For similar prices, you can go a few blocks away to a number of better upscale sushi restaurants such as Haru or Hana.  Amber lacks in creativity and the fish, although fresh and tasty, isn't top notch like the better known sushi restaurants.  I have not tried any dishes from the kitchen so I can't really comment on those except to say that they sound good on paper but are also kinda pricey.

Then again, Amber has a great decor and ambiance... the wall on the left by the bar when you walk in is an awesome multi-colored waterfall over stones, and in general I'd say this would be a good place to take a date.  There are also TVs behind the bar that show whatever ESPN game is on, so if that date isn't going very well... at least you have something else to keep you entertained.  But like I said, if you're going to spend this kind of money on sushi, take your chopsticks elsewhere.
