Review from Shirley C.
San Jose, CA
The lunch buffet is on the pricier side ($16.95 on the weekends) for indian buffet so this review is for dinner cause if i'm going to pay 16 pops a head for indian food there better be some leftovers to bring home!
The ambiance is soft and romantic, very different than that of other indian restaurants in the area, even Amber Mountain vVew does not have this special atmosphere. The wine list is pretty extensive for an Indian restaurant so the hubby and i come here for special occassions and we usually order the same thing, cab for him and a Kingfisher for me.
Appetizer:
-Potato and Peas Samosa - love love love the samosa, the mint chutney complements the fried samosa perfectly.
Main course:
-Tandoori Chicken - hubby loves the tandoori here and i can see why, so moist and succulent! delish on it's own!
-Butter Chicken - this is the reason we keep coming back! So velvet-y and smooth I can drink this thing up and better yet the chicken is cooked just right. we usually have left overs of this to bring home and it tastes even better the next day!
-Chicken Biryani - you can taste the cardamom and rose water in the biryani and the chicken falls off the bones, so yummy!
-Garlic and Chives Naan and Methi Aloo Mutter - mmmmm....carbs to soak up all the buttery deliciousness.
Service here is top notch for an Indian restaurant, servers are attentive and actually pile the food on your plate when they first come out.
Overall: classy Indian restaurant that is different from the norm. make reservations if you're coming for dinner on Fridays and Saturday - the place gets pretty busy.Listed in: My Passion for Indian

Amber, please note that vegetarians don't eat Duck! And when you serve someone the wrong order you are supposed to apologise, not ignore your customers. Also note that your restrooms are as filthy as your service is! tissue rolls running on the floor and water soaking the floors. If you continue to disregard/disrespect your customers, you are in for trouble!
Let me tell you why I write with such hate.
Friend and me went here for dinner a few nights ago, wanted to chill in santana row and our night was ruined the minute we stepped into Amber.
Ordered Dahi kebabs for appetizers with mango mint coolers and pink elephant as drinks. The pink elephant was blah but the mango mint coolers were yum, ordered a second round of the same drink and it wasn't as strong as our first order. In the meantime, our order of dahi kebabs arrived - it tasted chewy and weird as it was not actually dahi kebab but duck kebabs. We asked the waiter what is was and he said he will get our orginal order and took our food away. No apologies, no empathy towards how both of us who don't eat meat feel about having tasted meat.
We had ordered the main course and since the dahi kebab was delivered quickly we politely continued our meal. The meal took ages to come by, we were here on a Tuesday night, not the busiest of nights but service as usual poor.
The dahi kebabs were so-so and it was a very small portion. The main course we ordered were roti's,rice and mawa kofta. Nothing special to right about either on taste or presentation and all of it cost us $90 for 2 without taxes. We obviously did not tip them as they did not acknowledge their mistake nor give us a free appetizer.
We were just plain disappointed with the service, the quality of food, lack of empathy and complete disrespect towards a customer. I am not going to hover around Amber ever... -

Maybe a 3.5...
I'm a big fan of Indian food, and I thought this place was just ok. The major downside is that the food is relatively expensive for the amount that you get. My boyfriend and I had wanted to share a Mawa Kofta, so we asked the waiter if it was a large enough portion for two people. He assured us it was, but it turns out it came in a little dish that could hardly serve two. We both left feeling hungry for froyo. Also, the dishes don't come with rice, and it's pretty expensive to order a side separately. The naan is less than spectacular as well, and -- again -- expensive for what it was. You get maybe 4 pieces in a side order, and one of mine was burnt to the point of inedible. As far as the taste of the curry goes, it's alright. It's intricate enough, though my boyfriend complained about it not being spicy enough.
The decor of the restaurant is nice; it's dark and warm (we went for dinner service), and they try to achieve a classy and elegant atmosphere. I have no comments about the service.
I had a drink here: a Cashmir Apple. It's heavy on the alcohol, but was tasty. In that regard, I suppose it was worth the price =) -

Been wanting to try this restaurant out since SRow opened. Not bad, but not something I would ever care to go to again. The food was decent, service is decent, pretty expensive, portions weren't great, environment was relaxing.
Do I recommend? Um... sssuuurrreee? But don't blame me if it doesn't turn out that great. I'm sure a lot of people love this place, but I would rather have a bowl of pho, haha. -

I've only had a few experiences with Indian food, however, I really enjoyed the food here. We had a group of 5, and came in around 6:30pm, and there were more then enough tables available on a Friday night. The waiters were attentive, however when asked about menu options, almost seemed kind of stumped on how to answer, which was disappointing. But our waiter did recommend us a few menu options, yet of course were more expensive then the one we had previously chosen, but turned out to be delicious nonetheless. We ordered butter chicken, chicken kabobs, roti, naan, tandoori chicken, & tandoori sea bass. All of which were delicious and the chicken was extremely tender. And the best part was, the food came out extremely fast within 10 minutes & was hot.
If you like Indian food & are ready to handle the heaviness of the meal, come here. But beware, it's quite expensive. Everything ranges $18+ for the main entrees. -

The butter chicken with its tomato herb sauce base was very delicious and the broccoli we ordered was well prepared too! The naan n basmati rice (had a nice texture) sides were gd as well. The recommended Mango Panna Cotta was a little too sweet for my taste and i was chewing lemon grass, but the Gulab Jamun was as sweet as its suppose to be. However, the gun-powdered Scallop only taste of pepper n had the basmati rice on the bottom to save it n d paratha was too hard n not as crispy. Felt like it was pre-cooked and heated up before serving. On the whole, service was great, ambience was good, child-friendly with better than average food! Definitely will go back again!

great service but overpriced. the ingredients may be quality, but the flavors were off. nice place for a night out, but if you're just craving indian, plenty of better places. spent $90 bucks after tax and tip for two (no alcohol).

Decent northern Indian food, a rarity in the south bay. The food was standard, for what I'm used to in SF. The atmosphere is of fine dining, but the food doesn't live up to the price or environment. I remember the naan being chewy, everything else was mild.

There's really nothing that could have been better. The Cashmir Apple cocktail was pretty tasty. The Nalli Vindaloo was AMAZING and very spicy.
I want to take a moment to talk about what "spicy" means to me. I drink hot sauce from the jar and have occasionally been known to eat habanero peppers whole. Normally Indian restaurants do not sufficiently spice my food. That was NOT the case here: they did a great job and the food was delicious. And the best part: no one else at my table could mooch my dinner because none could handle it :-)
Portions were very generous. Service prompt. Prices reasonable. The iPad drink menu was a nice touch. Highly recommend. -

This was the best Indian food outside London! So lucky to have amazing web company vendors from India take me to dinner here and order for me too! Loved all the Veggie food so much! Everything on the menu was devine!

The first time I came here, the food was just ok, but I dismissed it as an off day for Amber considering the amazing reviews this place has gotten. The second time I went, it really didn't get any better, and for the money we spent, it was definitely not worth it.
Probably one of my biggest mistakes was assuming that I could get authentic Indian food here, but it's WAY too americanized for my tastes. I've gotten too used to eating my mom's Indian food and eating at other (and better) Indian restaurants, so when I went to Amber everything seemed super bland. Service and ambiance were fine, but nothing to rave about.
Honestly speaking, if you want authentic Indian food look elsewhere. If you can't handle spicy stuff and you don't mind paying a lot, then this is the place to be. -

Nothing special here folks move on..
I want to write a big review on the how bland the jasisalmeri bhindi was over here. But don't think I wanna spend that much time.
I do agree that the place looks cool has a good ambience. service is good but the food doesn't have the taste that I would really expect in Indian food.
Wheres the Jaisalmeri in the Bhindi moi Bouys !!! -

Very disappointed with the lunch buffet. Expected much better at such a nice looking restaurant with an expensive $15.95 buffet price. The vegetarian dishes had a very bland taste and had too much oil. The gajar halwa dessert was no exception - again too much oil.

Came here for lunch buffet on a weekend. They have lunch buffet every day, which is a great idea. I was really looking forward to this lunch since I've heard nice things from friends. I like the decor and ambiance here, but was pretty disappointed with the food. It was nice that they have a good handful of things you can choose from, but I wish they had more curry selections. They only curry they have is the butter chicken, which was pretty good. My favorite thing was the butter chicken and everything else was just okay. I wasn't very happy with the desserts, maybe they were too authentic? I'm not sure... but I don't think I'd be going back again.
I can say that the service was pretty good. I really like the mango lassi! -

Amber India in Santana Row is a fantastic authentic indian restaurant, it is also my favorite in San Jose. The decor, bar and seating are great for large or small parties. My favorite dish here is the Chicken Tikka Masala with Naan. The weekend brunch 11am-3pm is also a great value that provides access to a large variety of dishes and desserts; make sure to try the Keer (rice pudding).

Yoooo!
Tandoori chicken was SMOKIN'! Literally.
Squeeze that lemon, dip it that green sauce, the combo is to die for.
Between the five of us we ordered:
Item(s) ------------------------ $
5 piece Samosa 8.50
Kashimiri Roganjosh 19.95
2 Half Tandoori Chicken 27.90
Butter Chicken 18.95
Batata Babycorn Saung 14.95
Basmati Rice 3.15
2 Tandoori Roti 5.90
2 Tandoori Naan 6.30
Garlic Chive 3.75
Total came out to a whomping 144.78. Worth it, but steep! Really attentive servers and wait staff. Definitely a good spot to check out if you're tired of the 100 hour waits at Yard House. Cheers. -

I went there with 3 of my other friends for Dinner. The ambiance was good and at a good location. But had some strange experience this time:
1. They have changed the menu and contains just 4-5 dishes for each Veg and Non-Veg
2. Meals have gone expensive
3. We ordered 2 curries for 4 of us, and when the food arrived, we got shocked that quantity has reduced so much that 1 curry is good for just 1 person. C'mon for a curry worth $16, you expect it to be a decent portion
4. Even being so pricey the food didn't taste awesome. You can get the same taste at other indian restaurants for $7-$8.
I am not going to this location at least. The one in SF looks much better. -

Went to Amber last weekend and we were really disappointed. The place used to look hip when it opened up a few years back but now it looks dated.
We ordered a chicken dish (I think it was Fenugreek chicken) and Mawa Kofta.
Both dishes had creamy sauces more suited for a western palate. While the chicken dish was ok the Mawa Kofta was awful. Chewy and strange tasting. None of the dishes were worth the price.
I had a terrible stomach ache that night so I suspect things were not fresh there. I am not going to that place again. -

If you like Indian food but doesn't like spicy Indian food, then this is the perfect place to be! I highly recommend their Butter Chicken (probably even better to get during lunch since it's all you can eat!), the trio of chicken, their different types of naan (garlic is still my fave!), Tandoori Kebab Sampler, and their Veggie Moilee, that's if you're a huge fan of curry that tastes like coconuts. (Tip: if you get the butter chicken, dip the naan in the sauce!) Every dish has so much flavor, and the chicken is so tender! For cocktails I highly recommend the Indian Rain. Their panna cotta was not memorable.
Service is very attentive, and the restaurant is very clean. It is expensive for an Indian restaurant and portions are not big. For a dinner meal for 2, expect to spend at least $40 - $60 if you have a decent appetite. My boyfriend can finish an order of butter chicken and naan alone, and that's already $25. -

This was the worst restaurant I've ever been to. For a shop in Santana Row we were shocked at the service and rudeness of our waiters over the course of the two miserable hours we were there.
Thus place is NOT good for groups. Their payment system is either dislexic or they're just totally incompetent at processing more than one credit card.
We are not ever recommending this shit hole of a restaurant. Stay away. -

The first and last time I will ever come to Amber! The service was horrible! Our waiter did not know the menu at all and was very condescending to many members in my group! And to top it all off, we waited more than 45 minutes to pay for our food because I guess he did not know how to swipe a few credit cards! I am surprised that a restaurant as unprofessional as this was located in Santana Row! The food was not bad, but was also not great. Definitely not worth dealing with the terrible customer service at this restaurant.

My friend/co-worker took me and another co-worker/friend for a late birthday dinners at Amber. What a beautiful restaurant! We started off with Pink Elephants. What a potent drink! I'm not a drinker so just drinking 1/4 of it made me tipsy. My fav part was the lychee at the bottom.
We started off with appetizers of Gobi Manchurian, Bhutte ke Tikki and Karavali Shrimps. They were all just delicious. My fav being the Bhutte ke Tikki. If all vegatarian food tasted as good as that dish...sign me up!
For our dinner dishes we ordered: Kashmiri Roganjosh, Bohri Murg Curry, Chili Eggplant and Dum Biryani. Again, everything was delicious. My fav was the Dum Biryani.
We ended our meal with Vanilla Almond Pudding, South India Coffee Creme Brulee and Chai Tiramisu. I did not care for the texture of the Almond Pudding but the Creme Brulee and the Chai Tiramisu were just about the best desserts I've ever had...ever.
I cannot take credit for ordering any of these dishes as my wonderful friend/co-worker ordered everything and we just went along with whatever she thought we would like. Dinner was just fantastic and I look forward to going back to Amber again. -

The food was good but if you're looking for huge portions, you'll be disappointed. The good thing is that the flavors were so rich you didn't need a lot to be satisfied. We ordered the butter chicken - very good. Stuffed baby eggplant - this was our favorite dish of the evening. Samosas - small, nothing especially unique but very good. Make sure to save room for dessert. The creme brulee was heavenly.

I took my wife here for dinner before we headed to a comedy show this past Saturday. I knew that the place would be expensive, since it's on Santana Row but it was a little too pricey for me. I love Indian food but what are you really paying for. Every plate cost about $20. We were short on time so we only ordered the Tandoori chicken, butter chicken, rice and 2 naan. It took 18 minutes before our dishes came out. There was lot of Tandoori chicken but not enough butter chicken for $20 each. The total bill was $53 before tip, which is ridiculous. Besides being disappointed with the prices, the food was good but not spicy. If you want the same kind of elegant/fancy restaurant and pay top dollar, I recommend Rangoli's in Campbell. The food cost the same but it's way more tastier.
The ambiance and food was good but I can get a much better value and my favorites like Shan's and Shalamar on El Camino Real. I won't be coming back here again. -

I'm giving this a 4 out of 5.
They have a nice atmosphere and decor. Getting a table is extremely easy. You'll find the people working their are professional and roll out the red carpet for you. The food is delicious, we ordered an assortment of food off the menu since we went in a large group. Highlight was the butter chicken.
Cons: Over priced, the food is great but I've been to several other restaurants that offer more food for half the price and similar atmosphere. Most dishes are within $20. But what do you expect, its located in Santana Row.
I would recommend for special occasions! -
Review from Sharon Y.
You know it's always a good sign when you walk into an Indian restaurant and most of the people frequenting the place are Indian. We stopped in for brunch after several exhausting hours of shopping the Black Friday sales and found great nourishment in the brunch buffet. At $15 a person, it was a little pricey, but the food was delicious.
One of my pet peeves about many inferior Indian restaurants is that after a while, all the sauces taste the same. That's definitely not the case at Amber India. Every dish was perfectly spiced and had a distinct flavor. I also liked that they didn't have any lamb - everything was either chicken or vegetarian, so I was able to sample to my heart's content. Tandoori chicken, butter chicken, saag paneer, numerous other dishes the names of which I can't remember - everything was wonderful. The naan was brought warm to our table, and it was on the flaky (as opposed to chewy) side.
We've been to the San Francisco location for dinner before, but this was our first time at the Santana Row restaurant. It did not disappoint. -

Sigh
We used to go here all the time and always had a great experience. In the past I would have given them consistently 4's or 5's. Tonight, not so great. The service was great, as it has always been. The food simply was a disappointment.
We had a sea bass dish that was on the fishy side. That really makes me wonder about the quality of the fish they are using if the fishy taste came through all of the Indian spices.
We also had a trio chicken plate. The chicken was crispy black on the edges and one of the trio's had so much fat in it that we sent it back. It came back a little better but not great.
There are so many other really good Indian restaurants that perhaps don't have the same atmosphere, but the food is so much better. I hope they get their act together. -

This is the Indian restaurant from hell. Service is horrible! Can't believe a place like this exists on Santana Row. We ordered a healthy amount, and to top off the evening they tried to double our bill. Ridiculous. Would never come here again. The food is not horrible but definitely not great.
And they don't split the final checks! Which restaurant in their right mind expects a customer to believe that "it's impossible for us to split your bill"? -

BEWARE!!!
Their Butter Chicken had a funny taste when I pointed this out to the waiter he said " that's the flavor you don't know anything about Indian flavors" the nerve he had to tell me this.
After going home and spending $88.00!! I started to feel sick and had terrible tummy ache my stomach was turning I wanted to throw up sooooo bad so I force myself to throw up. And NO it was not the stomach flu!
But guess what?! My friend also got sick too much of a coincidence?! I think NOT! I will NEVER go back to Amber!!!
I will write a strong letter to the health department. As the manager refused to apologize and charged us for making us sick!!!

My roomie and I stopped here for a post-roller-skating dinner and were blown away. Our server strongly recommended the cauliflower appetizer. He was right--it was amazing. I could have eaten the whole thing by myself. We also ordered the butter chicken and naan, both were amazing. I wanted to lick the sauce from my plate. So good.
The ambiance is great the the ceiling is decorated like a beautiful sky with twinkling stars. It was a dressy atmosphere, but we didnt feel too out of place in our clothes we wore to the skating rink.
An amazing dining experience until you get the bill. I'm spoiled by going to maw'n'paw indian food joints where you can eat on less than $10. Amber is not one o those places. So tasty, it will be a "fancy occasion" go-to. -

One of the worst restaurant experiences ever! Here is why:
1. They have a different payment system that is long and confusing for their servers. It took us almost 45 mins just to pay.
2. They never asked us or stated anywhere that some of the dishes were spicy so some of us couldn't enjoy their meals.
3. They do not like to make changes to their dishes at all. Their explanations on why were confusing and made no sense.
4. Servers were often looking at us and giving us harsh looks which made it very uncomfortable and impossible to enjoy the meal.
5. When we complained to the manager, all he said was "I understand" and the stupid thing is, half the time he didn't wait to see what I was saying before he said it so he obviously did not understand. He did not care about our business or our valid complaints.
6. They tried to screw us by charging us double for rice!
This place is utterly the definition of bad service. If you wanted to learn proper customer service, do the exact opposite of what they do here and you will be successful! -

I heard it's a nice restaurant, but we were so disappointed after last night's Valentine's day dinner. They advertised on their website "Valentine's day dinner for two $70". But after we got there and found out that $70 only includes 2 entrees ($35/entrée). We ended up spent $140 for our meal with 1 appetizer (4 pieces medium size shrimp), 2 entrees (lamb with only a little meat and 2 small slices fish), and 1 tiny dessert. And we were not even full.

Best enjoyed during their lunch buffets but even then I'd prefer to go elsewhere. As an Indian, I am yet to find truly authentic food without having to run to the nearest Pakistani hole-in-the-wall (which are almost almost 100% spot on delish)!
Went there the other night for dinner and it was ridiculously pricey for the tiny portions served. It is a nicer styled Indian restaurant than most, but I don't think the cocktails are worth $9 and the food is definitely not worth $20+ a plate! Don't get me wrong, I think the food is pretty palatable, but not super awesome, gourmet style Indian food, which is what you expect at that price. Constructive criticism: serve your tiny dishes in more stylish platters to make it seem more gourmet!
Also, try not to sit in the far back sectioned off area if you're in a smaller group. That's where they put larger parties (10+ people) so it can get super loud and claustrophobic!! Wish they had heat lamps outside, as the patio would be THE BEST place, despite the Santana Row traffic!
Lastly, I disagree with the person about the wait staff. I thought they were super attentive and really very nice. -

I had the lunch buffet (3 stars) here some time ago and dinner last night (2.5 stars) so I round it up to 3 stars.
The nice decor, full bar and Santana Row address definitely make it a trendy Indian go to place for many visitors and non Indians. The dining experience I had last night was not the best.
It was really nice of my friends to treat me to a farewell dinner here; the kind gesture was very much appreciated.
We started with cocktails, they were fine, service was decent as well. The group shared 2 crispy cauliflower (good), a chicken sausage (OK) and a mushroom/corn appetizers (OK very small). Then the main courses, we had paneer, lamb, chicken and some other vegetarian dish, rice, naan..each dish came in small portion, we barely had enough. Even though the flavors were all OK but after considering the small portions and the prices, it was just not worth it.
We also had lots of desserts, the almond pudding and ice cream were pretty good, others were OK. I will probably eat at other good Indian places before coming here for dinner again. -

I've been wanting to go to this Amber location in ages. We had a terrible experience on new year's eve, but thought that maybe (just maybe) it was too crowded for them to handle.
Anyways, went on a Monday for lunch buffet around 1:15 or so. Place was rather empty (Should've taken the hint and turned around)
Were seated promptly, we grabbed our plates and went to pick out the food.
Here's what we found:
- Food was barely lukewarm.
- Food looked like it was sitting there for a while (understandable as there were hardly any guests)
+ Once we complained to the manager, he came by promptly a few times to check on it
- He argued: Food is very hot, and told us to mix the stuff in the buffet counters and take food from inside (As if we didn't know)
+ Service was OK, although a bit made-up
+ Naan was good, hot, served on the table
- Expensive place
- Desserts were just not good
- Food had a strong flavor to it, not in a good way.
- Didn't taste Indian enough to me.
Unfortunately, our stomachs started churning later in the evening, which wasn't good
That was the last time we ventured into Amber.
