Amber India is my favorite indian food...EVER.
I have a love affair with the butter chicken.
I WAS EATING MY BUTTER CHICKEN LAST NIGHT AND FOUND A GIGANTIC ANT INSIDE OF THE CURRY SAUCE..........!!!!!! EWWWW
extra protein!? i think not..... and let me tell you this wasnt one of those little ants you see on the road or sidewalk walking in a line acting cute...this was a gigantic monster ant from an evil ant hill somewhere in the forest...how it ended up in their kitchen and MY CURRY i do not want to know ..it pains me to think about.
wtf... this is not india, I expected amber india to be cooking in a clean healthy environment...not around BUGS...disgusting
: (
such a disappointment -

Classy, trendy, up-scale Indian Restaurant in the heart of the city. Three-story restaurant. Plenty of waiters walking around to tend to needs, and very clean feeling for an indian restaurant. Went for the lunch buffet, and it gets packed up easily. I've heard dinner is the same.
BUFFET:
- array of appetizers & salads
- 1 fish and 3 chicken entrees
- 3 vegetarian entrees
- tandoori breads & kebabs
- fresh cut fruits & dessert table
- to DIE for Mango Mimosas - first I've ever tasted and its bottomless! #YUMMM!
SUMMARY: Super expensive indian food. You can easily go down the street and get the same foods for way cheaper. The only thing you're paying for is location and ambiance. If you aren't trying to impress - go down the street. #RealTalk. -

Great spot for Indian meals! I've been here for weekday buffet lunches as well as a la carte dinners.
The buffets are great with lots of options and the food is always fresh, served hot and delicious! It does get really crowded at lunch so it helps to get there before noon.
The butter chicken, chicken tikka and fish dish were all very good. Never made it to the dessert table but it looked yummy.
Service is great. They will continue to bring you baskets of naan until you decline and water glasses never sit empty!
Lunch buffet is $17 and soda is $3. -

First off, this restaurant is pretty expensive depending on what you get, my bill came out to about $54 dollars. But hey, it's worth it for what you get: classy decor and great food. I started the meal with the delicious pepper crab cake (which was excellent), although I had a few shells in it :/ Then I had the seekh kebab nizami, and I can honestly say that was best kebab I've ever had. There was a group of us so we also ordered the chicken apricot kebab and I could've just had that by itself, it was so delicious. And of course we ordered the essentials, raita, naan, saffron pulao...long story short, everything was good!
I'd definitely recommend Amber to any indian food lover. It's definitely not cheap (so plan accordingly), but it's worth every penny. -

This is for the lunch buffet:
The food is very heavy and leans too much toward vegetarian items. If I'm paying $16.95, I want more meat! The experience of getting the food is very chaotic and you will be snaking through a small space, competing with waiters carrying drinks and taking away used plates. The small set of stairs separating the dining from buffet area is a bottleneck.
A few minutes after the end, I was slaughtered by food coma and could not operate any heavy machinery, ie. my own body. :-/1 Previous Review: Show all »

San Francisco, CA
$30 for a lunch buffet is a bit much...for two, the tab came to under $80. Normally it's ~$20 but I guess special flair for Mother's Day accounted for the $10 uptick.
You get what you pay for, though- high-quality ingredients like asparagus, saffron, oyster mushrooms, walnuts, and special stations for dosas (banana, spinach...), fusion Indian 'nachos' - puffy fried chip-like things with toppings like beans and yogurt. I don't know if these items were special for Mother's Day only.
Mimosas were included.
Tasty food- I was full after one plate. Great ambience. Very crowded and a wait despite reservations- luckily the uber friendly wait staff let us in as early as possible. -
Review from Alisha T.
Excellent Indian food, but they need to kick up the service, particularly during lunchtime.
This Amber is supposed to be an elegant restaurant for high quality food and superb service. This Amber has lived up to these expectations on two (dinner) occasions).
Lunch, however, is a completely different experience. It's chaotic. It's super casual, which is fine, but that's NOT an excuse for Amber to dial things down on their end. The service has been inexcusably terrible on the last two lunchtime trips (on weekends nonetheless). We spent way too much effort looking for waiters to fill our water glasses, bringing us naan (it arrived 30 minutes after we started the buffet), and paying the bill. -
Review from Siv L.
Came here for dinner on Monday night around 5:30 without a reservation and was seated immediately. At the recommendation of my friend, we ordered a few appetizers and entrees.
We started with the palak chaat (flash fried spinach, yogurt & tamarind chutney), aloo peas samosa, and cauliflower bezule (seared cauliflower, fresh coconut, mustard seeds, curry leaves & green chili). We also ordered the basil chicken kebab, saag paneer, saffron pulao, spinach and mint raita and garlic naan.
Everything was so delicious but my favorites were the palak chaat (sooo yummy!), the cauliflower, and garlic naan.
Would definitely come back and would definitely recommend! -

Good food, spendy, seated without res on a sat night 630pm. place was packed. waitress was nice, food served fast. tasty. the one in santana row is better (i would have thought otherwise).
drinks were ok, not great
hostesses think they are hot s and could use some attitude adjustments. -

The buffet is ridiculously delicious. I left so full I needed a moment alone. Soon after the event, I sneezed at my desk and my pants unbuttoned themselves, that's how much you can indulge at Amber India.
The butter chicken is finger lickin' good. Naan comes with, everything was spot on.
$16 for buffet may be a bit on the pricey side but this place serves up some major high end indian delight realness. -
Review from Catt G.
Oakland, CA
There is nothing wrong with this food. It tastes good, is cooked as it should be, and, as a plus, the atmosphere of the restuarant is nice and they have a lot of wines.
But I wouldn't go back. It's super pricey, and I think you are paying for the atmosphere and the wine list.
Instead, go to Little Delhi a couple blocks over on Eddy. The food is fantastic, its hole-in-the-wall charming, and its the price you want to pay for lamb + rice (and...they have wine). -

Classy, friendly and delicious!
Having no tolerance for spicy food, the waiter spent quite some time introducing non spicy but more traditional Indian foods to me. In the event that something does become spicy, I was offered yogurt, lemon or another dish just to make sure I was content. I ordered the curry sea bass which was absolutely delicious. Although the sauce had a mild kick to it, the sea bass was cooked perfectly with the curry sauce marinated well into it. The naan with pesto was soft and aromatic and went perfectly with the sauce from my sea bass dish. My brother ordered the dish with okra, which was quite flavorful and my friend ordered the butter chicken, which had a strong spice taste to the palette and was somewhat similar to the usual chicken tikka masala. However, it was still delicious and one can only wonder why it is the restaurants signature dish.
Although a bit pricey, the food quality proved the price worthy. -
Review from Alice L.
Came here for a work lunch. Apparently, they have a lunch buffet and it's definitely the way to go. I had the mutton curry, lentil curry, aloo gobi, tandoori chicken, saag paneer, rice pudding, roasted veggies and also their made to order dosa.
Outside of Vegas, I have never seen a buffet line that long (that's what she said!). We waited around 5 minutes before the line started moving. Definitely not really something that I would do often because I would totally stuff my face. Would love to come here for a real dinner one of these days. -

Absolutely delicious and divine, this dining establishment is definitely high class.
The ambiance is very elegant and classy. Surprisingly, their bathrooms are so nice!
The buffet area is pretty small, but the quality of their food makes up for it. I especially love the butter chicken. Absolutely creamy, and the spices give a great kick. Combine it with the complementary naan that they provide you and you are set for good.
It is a tad bit pricey for a buffet, but it's alright, because you will most likely be eating your money's worth here :). -
Review from Richa A.
I don't like going out for Indian food in SF most of the time since it seems like an overpriced plate of greasy vegetables and/or seafood and/or a piece of chicken (pretty much any Indian restaurant in the Mission and 'Loin qualify). At Amber, it is pricy but worth it -- the quality is there, the menu is interesting and offers something more unique than what I can get at home, and the food is flavorful and delicious.
I have been to Amber many times and it is the only Indian restaurant I would recommend to friends in the area.
The one complaint I have about this location is regardless of if you have reservations, there is often still a wait beyond that. -

Best Indian restaurant in the city hands down. Yes, it's expensive for Indian, but you get excellent food and great atmosphere. My absolute favorites are the lamb chops and the butter chicken with garlic naan. And of course the Palak Chaat - the spinach appetizer that will make you crave spinach. Oh and the tandoori fish. I think you get the picture. Everything I've ever had here I've enjoyed.
The bar is also great. There is an awesome bartender there, originally from NY who will take care of you. STRONG drinks - and you can eat at the bar ;-) -

We had dinner here right before doing dancing. We ordered the "dum" style lamb biryani and the black pepper chicken (kozhi melagu) with naan. For drinks we had the pink elephant and a variation of a mint julep (forgot the name)
We thought the lamb biryani was great and the meat was really tender. However we thought the chicken curry left a bit to be desired and was too one note. The drinks were both great.
Service was also good, our server was kind and courteous. -

Get right out of town. How does this place have 4 stars?
If you think Indian food in the mission is overpriced, wait til you come here and pay an arm and a leg for overcooked chicken. Even the rich sauce on the butter chicken could not disguise the fact that the cook fell asleep in the back. Portions are small considering the price, especially in the seafood dishes. The sauces were not anything special, and I can't recall any dish with even a touch of heat to it.
I came here with a big group and we probably ordered 12 different dishes between appetizers and entrees. The only dishes that I thought were worth the money were the fried spinach and the calamari. I never even got the roti I ordered, and trying to split the check between 8 of us was so crazy that I didn't bother to have her take it off the bill. What's another $2.50 when you're already paying $70 per person? Also our server pushed so much food on us when we were ordering that we wound up with too much, so don't get sucked into the sales pitch.
The wine was good, though. If you get tricked into going here, order a lot of it.
A final thought: any place downtown that can immediately seat a group of 8 people on a Thursday night with no reservations while the President is in town a couple blocks away should be approached cautiously. -

3.5 stars.
Was in the area for Ad:Tech and not in the mood for a sandwich so Amber India it was. Their lunch buffet is only $16.95 and although there wasn't much variety, what they had was pretty good.
The buffet consisted of vegetable pakora (Cold, soggy batter), various fried vegetables (All the batter was cold and soggy), various chutneys/raitas/pickled vegetables (I'd pass on all except the mint raita. That was really good.), butter chicken (VERY good. This is a must have), tandoori chicken (Great char on the outside, tender and moist meat.), fried white fish (Not sure what type of fish it was but it was pretty good. Crispy on the outside, sweet and flaky on the inside.), some sort of vegetable/chicken curry (Meh.) and also quite a few vegetarian dishes (paneer, lentils, etc.) all of which were typical Indian buffet food. The dessert table had a rice/tapioca/condensed milk sort of dessert which was weird. Very creamy, thick and sweet. I'm not sure if I liked it or hated it. Another dessert was some sort of cheese ball in saffron scented cream. It had a weird soggy texture I didn't like. They also had fruit salad which was whatevers.
Side note: Make sure to get their butter chicken. That's the best thing there. Mmm slightly tangy, creamy and spicy with super tender chicken. This was fucking delicious! Also, the waiters bring you fresh naan, hot from the oven to your table. Dip that shit in the butter chicken and enjoy! -
Review from Aditi R.
I've maintained from the very beginning that since I usually hate having Indian food outside of my house. Until I moved to SF that is. Two restaurants stand out in my mind - one is Dosa, and the other is Amber.
In short, Amber does traditional (north) indian food incredibly well. Add a dose of upscale dining, a great downtown location, and great service and you're in for an amazing night.
The restaurant is huge, yet at any given night, I've seen Amber nearly full, which speaks to its popularity and delicious food. So delicious that I went once 3 days in a row, absolutely unintentionally, and the waitress recognized me.
Yes, it was slightly embarrassing. Yes, I pigged out at the awesome buffet. (They have this 7 days a week)
Alright. Cutting to the food review. The dishes I've had -
Appetizers
1. English Peas, Portobello, & Goat Cheese Tikki - yummy patties with the aforementioned ingredients fried to delicious goodness. Give it a try!
2. Aloo Peas Samosas - good. Nothing extraordinary. It's samosas. Ok alright, it's not greasy. Thank god for little miracles.
3. Chicken Apricot Kebab - great combo of chicken and apricot! loved it.
Entrees
1. Butter Chicken - this is their signature. And they do it, very, VERY well. Go for it.
2. Sea Bass Kokum Curry - so so great. Amazing fish dish and the coconut milk adds a ton to it.
3. Paneer Lababdar - basically take what you had in the butter chicken and remove the chicken, and add paneer. Ladies and gents, we have paneer lababdar. Good stuff.
4. Badam Bhara Baingan - OMG. Favorite dish on the menu. Hands down. Try it. Eggplant, caramelized onions, and almond PERFECTION.
5. Lahsooni Saag Paneer - your typical great saag panneer.
And of course, the tandoori rotis, the rice, the raita....all of it phenom.
Lastly, desserts - they're all pretty mediocre IMO compared to the rest of the menu. And come what may, please never try the Falooda with Strawberry ice cream.
Go on, give it a try. It won't disappoint. It's definitely more expensive than many other indian restaurants out there, but it offers a variety that is consistently amazing with an absolutely awesome setting.
However just in case you're still skeptical, definitely give the lunch buffet a try and try many of their different dishes for a great price. I guarantee you'll find yourself going there...perhaps more than 3 days in a row :) -
Review from Hannah C.
Here's an Indian restaurant that won't leave residue on your hair and clothes smelling like you've been wrestling in Indian spices. Great location, nearby Union Square and right off of Powell Bart Station. There's a warm contemporary feel to Amber India. This is an upscale Indian restaurant and so was the price. The most expensive Indian dinner I have ever paid for.
Crab meat appetizer, samosas, 2 orders of basmanti rice, an order of potato nan, a lamb stew, and a lentil dish. The food wasn't bad but it wasn't outstanding enough to have a $80+ bill. With that kind of money, I could've gotten 2 very satisfying orders of pan seared foie gras.
A nice atmosphere if you want to host a party but I was disappointed that chicken tikki marsala wasn't on the menu. I left hungry and unsatisfied!!! This was a good experience but I will stick to Chutney on Jones St. where I can get a dinner for 2 for half the price and still have leftovers. -
Review from Vicky Q.
The first thing I have to say is I had the best meat here ever! The lamb chops were so tender and soft and succulent, I cant get over it! Unfortunately it was my bf's dish but I still got to eat a few bites ; ). I got the sea bass with coconut curry for my main entree which was also good. It had more of an Indian flavor than the lamb chops which was good since we were at an Indian restaurant. We also ordered samosa, duck kabobs, and garlic naan. The duck was also very tender and delish! We topped off our night with a mango creme brulee which tasted so natural! I loved how it had pieces of mango slithers in it too.
Service was good, ambiance was classy and romantic. Decor was beautiful and classy. It is also conveniently located right next to the Westfield mall in Union Square. -

I came for cocktails and appetizers in the bar for happy hour. Good service but alittle crammed in the bar space. I like the central downtown location. I look forward to coming back for a meal.

Walnut Creek, CA
Expensive ($170+ for a table of 5, no drinks), long wait times (1 hour+). Burnt butter chicken (the simplest dish there is).
Went there with a bunch of friends on a Saturday evening. Wait time was longer than an hour, so hung out at the bar/lounge area. No one came to help us so we decided to seat ourselves. After about 10 minutes of being there, someone paid attention and after another 5 minutes, someone came around to take our order for drinks. We were a total of 5, but 2 of us were served water. Wow! Just wow! Appetizers were good, but we were terribly hungry anyway.
Later, when we finally got down to the main dining area, the food was pedestrian. Murgh chilgoza was remarkable as it was terrible. Butter Chicken, the simplest dish there is, was burnt. This is a A+ Indian restaurant, and is serving burnt butter chicken!
Food was pedestrian. I've had much better food in almost all places I've eaten at, and the service was nothing remarkable. I'll have to give some positive feedback as the ambiance is good. -
Review from Ryan G.
Came here mid-afternoon and were greated with a $20 Buffett (a la carte was available). We decided on the bufet which came with mimosas. Turnover on food was quick so the food wasn't sitting out for long.
Recommend: English sweet pea cakes and butter chicken. -

As a lunch spot... pricey but you get what you pay for.
Great ambiance, Prompt service. fresh, lighter fare for Indian buffet. Great for business lunches - small to medium groups. As a fair-weather pesco vegetarian, this place has plenty of options. The tilapia is always moist, fresh & tasty, and the naan is warm and yummy.
If you like the hole-in-the-wall heavy sauced, cheap and spicy Indian places, you'll hate this place. This is really lighter, more refined fare that happens to offer a few of the heavier traditional dishes for the butter chicken lovers. -

Living in the tenderloin for two years, I was not accustomed to the concept of a "fancy Indian restaurant". My usual go to places were dive-y Indian restaurants which mostly doesn't even accept card.
Amber was a nice surprise. I can't say that the food is far better than my usual Indian restaurants like Shalimar and Chutney. But I won't say the food was bad either. Everything tasted yummy especially the Saag Paneer and Butter Chicken! I have always come here during lunch hours I've always did the buffet. The price for the buffet is OK for the good food and ambiance. I heard the ala carte menu can get a bit pricy though.
Overall I enjoy Amber, but I still would not prefer it over Shalimar or Chutney. -

The food and drinks are the bomb!!!
While waiting for our table we decided to get an appetizer and some drinks. I'm not a heavy drinker so I never really know what to get. I ask the bartender what I should get, and she was a little bit hesitant at first to give me a recommendation but once she saw me getting frustrated and how clueless I was about drinks, she step up her customer service and asked me do I like sweet, sour, and whatever else. I said sweet so she recommended this raspberry and vodka drink that was delicious.
I would recommend the samosa with the chutney sauce as an appetizer for anyone not sure on what to get.
I had the lamb chops. It was soft, tender, and cooked perfectly. It made me forget about the fact that I was eating a baby lamb.
My girlfriend had the sea bass and it was good but not memorable.
Our waitress was kinda weird and awkward, but she gets the job done, so no complaints there.
On the expensive side but not a place to pass up. -
Review from Mymy N.
Was able to dine here because I was staying with a friend at the Marriott who recommended it. So glad he did because everything was excellent! Since he had been here before, we trusted him to order the spinach paneer, butter chicken, a sea bass dish, and assorted naan. I also tried the samosas while waiting for a table in the lounge. Everything was delicious! My favorite dish was the sea bass; the fish was melt in your mouth buttery and perfectly flaky. So good. This is Indian fine dining at its best. I wish I lived nearby so i could take advantage of the lunch buffet! Tip: don't stuff your face here before bar-hopping. You'll be too full to feel a buzz!

I wouldn't call myself an Indian food expert, but the meal here was delicious. This is probably one of the trendier Indian restaurants in the area.
We sampled a ton of food including the roti, basket of naan, a vegetarian medley, the lamb, samosas. Everything was tasty, although I must say that the naan and samosas were must orders. They also have a good list of wines by the glass and beer selections. -

I have to give this place 5 stars because I've been a repeat patron and I've always been taken care of.
I work with a lot of Indian folks and they always say that this is a great authentic place, but it is quite expensive. We usually go here in groups when there is a birthday or special event and we really enjoy the lunch buffet.
I am a huge fan of butter chicken and glaup jaman (i spelled that really wrong) and Amber has a great version of both dishes.
I do enjoy that they have a cold bar and hot food and the place is very clean.
Maybe I'll go to amber this week lol -
Review from Michelle Q.
San Francisco, CA
The ambiance of this place is ridiculously amazing. And you pay for it.
Let's be real, the food at this place (although tasty) fails to live up to its price, surroundings, and service. I ordered the Butter Chicken, Garlic Chive Naan, and the Samosas. The Butter Chicken was really just Chicken Tikka Masala. I have an issue with them slightly altering the name of it to make it sound more original, but it was pretty good. Standard Tikka Masala sauce but the chicken was super tender and pretty juicy--rare for this dish. I just could digest paying $19.95 for a tiny bowl of it. The Garlic Chive naan was decent. Nothing special. Nothing you couldn't get for $2 somewhere else. But I paid $4. And the Samosas were good. I really enjoyed them because they were smaller. Possibly a negative? Maybe. Except smaller Samosas means a larger proportion of fried outer skin and I'm always down for some fried deliciousness.
The service, however, was EXCELLENT. Not once did I ever need to ask for my water glass to be refilled and the waitress was super tentative and quick to replenish our basket of naan. The decor is beautiful, with rich woods and candlelight. The bar looks amazing, and I might go back simply to sit and have a cocktail.
Overall, this place has decent food, although, in my opinion, not worth paying 3x what you could be paying for Indian food elsewhere. The restaurant is beautiful, but if I'm going to be slopping up some tikka masala with naan and smelling like Indian food anyways, I don't really think I need to be eating by candlelight and sitting in a cushioned chair. Amber is a cool Indian eatery, but not anything to be blown away by. -

I'm a big fan of Amber India for $16.95 their lunch buffet including rice/naan is a good deal. My favorite entrees are their butter chicken and chicken tikki masala. Amber India is great at replenishing the buffet and its best to get there by 11:30am with or without a reservation.

San Jose, CA
Pros: The interior was very nice and clean. We walked into this restaurant on a whim and we were pleasantly surprised by how flavorful the food was, especially the fish and the butter chicken. Another pro is that drinks were included in the price of the buffet and the they had a lot of drinks to choose from which included mimosas, mango juice, soda and ice teas and they were all refillable.
Cons: One of the major downsides of this place was that there was a lack of variety, there were only about 10 dishes to choose from and after about two rounds, you run out of different things to try.
Overall, the food was really tasty and we had a great experience and we would definitely come back. -

Alamo, CA
Love Indian food but never really found a great restaurant that could capture the full rich taste of the culture. The food was amazing and tasted fresh. The service was also amazing. The waitress paid attention to us-and all her tables-even though every seat in the restaurant was taken. The employees there are really nice and this made me feel at home. The menu is a bit pricey (total for 3 people came to about $80), but it was worth it and would definitely come back!
