Excellent location in Midtown area. Walking distance to fine dining.

Amber House has super-helpful and polite staff. Very cozy. Not pretentious. Good breakfasts. Bonus: sufficient street parking. Extra bonus: cookies in the evenings. This will be our go-to place for staying in Sacramento.

Amazing! Wonderfully romantic stay! The staff are incredibly helpful... (Judith - thank you for all of your footwork! From the candlelit jacuzzi bath to the horse drawn carriage ride - it was absolutely perfect!) (Diana - thank you for taking pictures and for the delicious chocolate chip cookies!) (Carol - thank you so much for a very yummy breakfast - and for having hot sauce!) We will back!!

I can't believe I have lived in Midtown, and never heard of this place.  My husband surprised me with a stay here for our anniversary.  It was amazing!!  The softest robes, and bed I have ever been in, in a hotel or inn.  Highly recommended!!

This was a beautiful place! My husband and I stayed here for an event that we were in town for. From the time I called them to just answer the questions I had to the time we checked out we were treated with excellant customer service. I had wanted the mozart room but we went for the vivaldi room because mozart was booked. Im so glad it was because the vivaldi was so beautiful and romantic (the pics on the website dont really show how beautiful it really is) We enjoyed breakfast on our own private patio in our bath robes :)
The only thing I will do different next time we stay there and this is my fault for not thinking of this, but I had ordered the extra to our package which was champane, choc covered strawberries and rose petals with also the lighted candles around bath tub. When we arrived the roses, champane and strawberries were already set up and the candles would be done when we arrived back from our event. I will have them do everything before we arrived back to our room. That way it would be a surprise we (my husband and I ) could enjoy together. The inn keeper walks you to your room so it was a little akward. But like I said that was something I should have requested. The stay and service was excellant!! This place is def a must and I cant wait to stay again in the Vivaldi room or course :)

I recently booked Amber House for a special night: the night before my daughter's wedding. She, my other daughter and I stayed there for a "girls night" that evening. The rooms were gorgeous and super clean with views of a quiet older neighborhood and we were served warm chocolate chip cookies and milk to the room that evening. And the beds are SUPER soft. How do they manage that?

The owner, Judith, was very nice, coming out of the kitchen the next morning to greet us and make sure we had slept well. We had yummy French toast with cinnamon apples served by the cook herself, Carol, and sat at a window table overlooking the street where we watched the city wake up. My daughter was so relaxed and excited. It was her Wedding Day!

What a relaxing and special stay this was for me and my daughters. Truly one of the most special inns you will experience anywhere and lots of great restaurants right there in walking distance. Thank you, Amber House!  This place is classy, clean and you won't get better service.

Yep. I live not even eight blocks away. That's how amazing this place is. Two houses, Musicians and Writers - across the street from each other...plenty of restaurants and bars to choose from. I, personally, am in love with the Vivaldi room. (#12)

Judith, Carol and Patrick- Thank you for making me feel I was far away from Sacramento. The breakfasts? Amazing. Soy Vanilla French Toast and seasonal fruit with poppy seed dressing one morning, and Eggs Benedict with a first course of spiced pear- while listening to doves, meadowlarks, pigeons, crows and blue jays... indescribable. We dined on the patio several times, even in the rain, under the umbrella- and had the best time ever.

The last night I had ordered two glasses of wonderful port and a candlelit bath as a surprise for my (still) awesome husband. ...We had lunch at Capitol Dawg, earlier, and Teriyaki on the deck under the umbrella while watching the rain for dinner. We are  trying to continue a yearly tradition, and have succeeded so far. We treated my amazing Ma in law to the Brahms room, and I don't think she's ever been so relaxed. Non alcoholic beverages of your choice until nine, a whirlpool bath, plush terrycloth robes, cable, ipod deck, morning paper and service- fresh baked cookies and icy cold milk and tea (or what you please) at turn down...

Luxurious. There really is no other word. Ive never felt so pampered. If there's a special person in your life you want to impress, or if you need that gift for the one who has everything- this is it. Home away from home, indeed.

Thank you Amber House for an experience to remember.

Situated in a neighborhood that is quiet and convenient to restaurants, this establishment is a treat. From the reservation process to the check out process, I was treated with great care. Thank you Judith, Chelle, and the other staff for taking such good care of my wife and I.

We took advantage of the Yelp last minute deal and Judith set my wife and I up with the Vivaldi room. When we arrived last that afternoon, Chelle was the one that greeted us with a smile from ear to ear. She was very personable and professional. Thank for the recommendation to the Press Bistro where we had a decadent evening.

When we arrived back to our room that evening, we were greeted with fresh baked chocolate chip cookies in our room along with some drinks. Who doesn't like fresh backed cookies?? I know I do..

All in all, great experience for us. Great cookies, comfortable beds, hot water in the showers, great breakfast in bed, and great staff. Thank you, we'll be back.

We chose the Amber House based on its location and the reviews we found on Yelp.  So glad we did!

The Vivaldi room was absolutely fantastic.  Housed in a Dutch Colonial building built in 1895, there is much character.  The gas fireplace was a welcome treat.  There is a delightful private balcony off the bathroom... great for morning coffee!  I was a bit concerned with the room being on the street side of the building, but there wasn't much noise at all on a Thursday night.  They bring home made cookies in the evening, and we upgraded to the chocolate port beverage option.

Breakfast ended up being just my girlfriend and I in the main building.  The food was wonderful, and artfully prepared.  Couldn't have asked for more.  Everyone was so sweet and helpful.  Really a great find!!

Thoroughly enjoyed a relaxing stay at the Amber House... the innkeepers were welcoming and helpful.  In the morning, we opted to have breakfast in our room, it was fantastic!  The Eggs Benedict were delicious!

They have a great set up and provide excellent customer service.  Everything is up to you: what time for turn down service, when would you like your breakfast, etc... after spending so much time at large chain hotels, it was a nice change to have choices with more of a personal touch.

My wife and I stayed at Amber House for our 4th Anniversary last night. we stayed in the Bethoven room.
Oh my, we had such an awesome time. The B&B is close to all sorts of cool things to do.
We went to a art gallery opening and had sushi all withing quick drive distance or a nice walk.

Judith and Kevin the owners were awsome alon with her staff. The service was top notch, I am glad we chose Amber House over the Citizen or Sheraton.
We even had cookies waiting for us when we got back from dinner.
Coffee and Juice on our doorstep when we woke and a great breakfast of fresh fruit and cheese blintzes...YUM!

We have been to a few weddings here as well and it is a very neat treat tucked away in the heart of Sacramento.

I can not reccommend it enough!

I am going to review the sushi place and the art gallery too!

Though fancy hotels offer sumptuous amenities and convenience, I will happily forgo the experience for the sincere hospitality and personality of a quality bed and breakfast.

At the Amber House, charm abounds. I was met by the owner who within my first three steps past the front threshold of this Craftsman home, asked what time and with what tea I would like my fresh baked cookies to arrive. Now that's a welcome!

The house is furnished comfortably and with elegance. There is thought in the details - antique furnishings, agreeable beds, deep clawfoot or jacuzzi tubs, and even fireplaces - the experience truly feels like someone's home. Waking up and indulging in French toast in bed feels like the definition of luxury. A wonderful place to start and end the day.

My boyfriend was driving through a residential area in Sacramento.
I was thinking that we were on our way to the Holiday Inn where our friends' wedding was held. He then started parking in the middle of the street. I was puzzled.
When I stepped outside to figure our what was going on, I found a beautiful golden plate hiding in the vine, that said, "Amber House".
Then I realized that this was a little surprise from my boyfriend.

when we rang the door bell, friendly yet professional staff came out and led us in to their lobby area. They had comfortable sofas and well chosen antiques.
Our room wasn't ready yet, so we went off to the wedding.
When we came back and opened the door, there were rose petals beautifully spread through out the room. Also on the coffee table we had some home made cookies and tea waiting for us.
The bathroom was clean with the bonus of cute bath tub that fits two.
We enjoyed their lavender bubble bath and the great stereo system built into the wall.

In the morning coffee was already waiting by the door.
Breakfast was served shortly by a cheerful lady.
She started us off with a bowl of fresh fruits carefully chosen, along with crispy baked croissants.
Up next was delicious quiche and OJ.
We were left happy and full.

I totally loved the stay at the Amber house.
We were taken care of very well. I felt like a princess!
All of their rooms are styled differently.
I can't wait to go back.

This was my first time staying at a bed and breakfast.  What a great experience!

We stayed in the Lord Byron room in the main house.  The room is located right next to the staircase so there is a little noise, but it was not disruptive.  The innkeepers were gracious hosts and made us feel like appreciated guests.

The two-course breakfast was delicious and I loved waking up to find a tray outside our door with a pot of hot coffee and the Sacramento newspaper.

I would highly recommend Amber House B&B and would jump at the chance to stay there again!

If you're looking for a nice getaway that's not completely remote, this is it. Right in mid-town Sac, near nice restaurants and coffee shops, but also a quick drive to the freeway.

I had an event up in Placerville but the B&B's were either booked or looked kinda iffy. So, I decided to stay in Sacramento because this place looked great, I wanted the option of nightlife, and it was only 35 miles to Placerville.

Gabriel, the Innkeeper, was really sweet and made me feel right at home. He offered me a freshly baked chocolate chip cookie when I checked in and then offered to take my other cookie up to my room with a drink (nice cold milk) whenever I was ready.

My room(s) were cozy and comfy with tubs that I soaked in each night. The Longfellow room had the jacuzzi tub and it felt very extravagant to have that in my private bath.
The Wordsworth room (my favorite of the two), had a nice old-school soaking tub and high king bed. I liked the dark blue accents and mission/craftsman style furniture.

I had researched restaurants on Yelp prior to my stay but Gabriel (who also attended culinary school) gave me some recommendations and tips about where to go, sit, and drink.

Breakfast at this B&B was filling and tasty. The first day's breakfast of french toast with apples and syrup, bacon, fruit salad and juice was a perfect start to my day.

The second day was even better! These people were so accomodating that they had breakfast ready for me AFTER my half marathon on Sunday, although it was after their 10am serving time. I had a hot quiche and home potatoes, fruit salad, croissant and juice waiting for me when I got out of the shower.

I look forward to staying here again when I want to take a break.

Stayed here June 07 to attend a training and visit family. I actually had a couple of recommendations from some co-workers who kept raving about this place-so I had to check it out.

I had never stayed in a bed and breakfast before and was a little apprehensive about staying in a home with strangers. However, when I got to Amber House, I felt completely comfortable. The house manager/owner is so sweet, attentive, and looking to make your stay a wonderful experience. Guests who stay here are very friendly and respectful and you can either have a nice conversation with a guest or enjoy your novel in the sitting room or get your work done at the dining table. And yes, you have your privacy. The rooms are situated in a way so that you don't have to pass another guest room to get to your room and each room has their own bathroom.

The room that my husband and I stayed in  was on the first floor with a king sized bed and a nicely sized bathroom. The bed was very comfortable and I like the character of the antique decor. The very best part of the stay was when they knocked on our door and brought us breakfast (we ordered it the night before-its included in the room rate) of fruit, bacon, and french toast. Such a nice touch. You don't get that type of service at a typical big name hotel.

And Amber house is situated right outside of Downtown, where you can walk to a couple of bars, restaurants, or shops. If I go to Sacramento again, I'm staying at this place for sure.

Stayed here for a couple nights on the home stretch of a long road trip up the PacNW - and it was a pleasant way to end my trip.

Located in Mid-Town, I could walk to restaurants, friends & the Sac Bee. Nice quiet area, but a bit sketchy at night.

Nice big rooms, but felt alittle haunted. Very SOFT bed. Free WIFI. Big bathroom. Delicious breakfast served on the porch for me and my friend. Good coffee. Beautiful property. Friendly hosts - thanks Diane!

I'll be back for future biz/pleasure trips to Sacto!

You can't blame the staff for noise outside these charming b&b houses, but you can keep that possibility in mind when you decide to stay in downtown Sac. That's also what makes this place so great as you can walk to a variety of the best restaurants around.

The innkeepers are absolutely delightful & very accommodating. The rooms are spotless & felt cleaner than home. The beds are super comfy & the breakfasts yummy.

If you are a first-timer here, ask where your room is located. For example, The Beethoven room is directly inside the front door & facing the street. The old homes are elegant & original, so there are gaps under the gorgeous solid wood doors & you can see through the keyholes just like a peephole. There are quieter rooms upstairs or tucked away from the entrance in the main home, but if you are used to white noise (or better yet, ocean!), packing a sound machine would be a good idea.

The customer service just doesn't get any better. They'll bring you beverages (free of charge except for alcohol) any time up until 10pm & warm cookies are available when you check in & every evening of your stay if you choose.

What I like best is this isn't a b&b where you have to be social with the other guests. Your breakfast can be delivered to your room at your preferred time & set up for you with flowers & all. This is great because most likely you'll be wearing one of the Amber House robes & feeling too cozy to leave your room until it's checkout time.

This place is the bee's knees.

I was in Sacramento for work (just one night) but I LOVED my room with the HUGE bathroom and skylight.  The staff was amazing. When I checked in I was asked if i would like a drink or cookies placed in my room that night, and I asked for a glass of wine. Voila, after my meeting, I walk into my room and there everything was, waiting for me. It is very restful, immaculate, and I hope I can go back with my sweetie to enjoy it!

My wife and I stayed at the Amber House for two days after Thanksgiving to celebrate our first wedding anniversary. We found it to be a feast for the senses.

Taste: We were greeted with a plate of 4 large chocolate chip cookies. More are delivered each evening around 7. Complimentary beverages are served discretely any time you want until 10 and first thing in the morning. Oh, and they serve breakfast. Scrumptious two course breakfast, either delivered to your room or downstairs. The advantage of having breakfast downstairs is that you get to see the people who serve you. They were friendly, smiling and helpful. I was unaware you can broil grapefruit. Turns out it's a great idea that mellows the acid. We were sufficiently full of eggs and potatoes on our first day that we missed lunch entirely. I enjoyed the next morning's soy french toast, in spite of the fact that I had as yet to enjoy any soy product.

Sight: The house is lovely. We live in the SF South Bay area: a lanced boil oozing the puss of endless poorly built tract homes. The Amber House couldn't be more different. A Craftsman style home from 1905, its full of interesting wooden furnishings, stained glass and trap doors. You can actually get under the eaves from our room. I'm convinced the person who kept bringing us tea vanished into the hall closet.

Touch: Not only are the furnishings lovely to look at, they are lovely to use. While eating breakfast I noticed that I was sitting with good posture. This never happens. I'm usually hunched, Igor style over the computer, a book, stationary or my food. But the chairs in our room seemed to make bad posture impossible. The Sitting room was great: for sitting. I could have spent all afternoon their reading (did I mention they have, get this, books in their library).

Sound: Of all the period furnishings in the house, my least favorite are the authentically single pane windows. They provide minimal insulation from noise or temperature. On the positive side, they do have a dock for your iPod, so you can drown out any noise coming in. (I'm not sure if this will effect other patrons or not)

Smell: Well, it smells nice. Neither overly scented nor musty. That's pretty impressive for a 100 year old house.

So go book your tickets already and drink it all in, especially the mangosteen green tea.

Its not Amber House's fault its in Sacramento....

When my blonder half and I go to the Sacramento area to take care of my dad, we stay at the Amber House (TAH) when we need a little post-daddy R&R.

    Here are the upsides:

The best thing about TAH is the service.  Its exceptional.  We have never waited more than 10 minutes after placing a call for whatever,

Also, you can make reservations online but i usually call so I can talk to the concierge about ideas.  Last time, we had couples massage in our room, followed by champagne in a massive hot-tub bathtub.

Breakfast on the main house porch or the private porch in the Vivaldi room is a must..  Breakfast is amazing, as is the neighborhood on a sunny Sunday morning.

TAH is in a great neighborhood; lots of fun bars (including several gay bars) and restaurants.

    Here is the downsides:

    - No evening meal room service.

    - The wine selection should be expanded.  SERIOUSLY.  Seems like the owners select small wineries of maybe friends' ??  We have never had a remarkable bottle of wine there.

    - the website should list the room size.  I dont mind a little room but i dont want a little room when i expect a big one.

My sister and I were in town for an event and we stayed in the Chaucer Room. The Amber House is an absolute gem, and I can't wait to stay there again. I read the Yelps before I stayed (Fri/Sat 10/22) and I figured if it lived up to half the hype, it would be worth it. I'm a Fairmont kind of girl, so I tried to keep my expectations realistic, but I forgot all about that the second I hit the front steps. Every single detail was a complete joy. The staff, the check-in process, the freshly baked chocolate chip cookies, the charming decor, the level of CLEANLINESS, the Jacuzzi tub, the antique furniture, the skeleton key on the keyring (decorative and totally appreciated), the comfortable bed, iPod dock (flat screen tv but we didn't turn it on), library, porch swing, and truly delicious breakfast are a few of my favorites. We had fresh fruit with poppy seed dressing, a freshly baked croissant, vegetable quiche, and country potatoes with coffee and orange juice. There were several breakfast options, and we were asked if we'd like to be served in our room, in the dining room (stunning!), or on the porch. We opted for the porch and took advantage of the porch swing while waiting for the 2nd course of breakfast. There aren't words for how relaxing and blissful breakfast was.

There was limited off-street parking, and tons of free street parking.  We laughed our heads off while we read the journal that guests have kept--recounting their honeymoons, anniversaries, romantic weekends, etc. After reading the log, I can tell I failed by neglecting to order the rose petals, candle lit bath, and couples massage (HA HA HA...sorry, leftover Sister Day humor). We also enjoyed a delicious lunch at Mikuni (sushi on J Street), and spent an afternoon at the new Crocker Art Museum. Amber House makes me want to move back to Sacramento. Almost. I think I'll just continue to visit, but I'll stay at Amber House every chance I get. I highly recommend it for a Sister Day, but I'm looking forward to experiencing it with the man I love. If you're still on the fence about staying, ask yourself if you are interested in spending the same amount that you'd spent at a modern hotel, only with far superior food, far more privacy, and endless charm. If you like quirky, charming old houses, GO!

The two homes are beautifully decorated and recently remodeled. They were both built, I believe, between 1895-1905 and are full of character. A perfect place to stay if want a true Sacto feel since they are located in the midtown neighborhood of Winn Park. Very close to shopping on J Street and tons of restaurants.

This place is amazing. I went here about two years ago for a little getaway with my boyfriend. This place is so romantic and sweet. It is sheer heaven. I wish I never had to leave. I still dream about going back all the time. The rooms are absolutely gorgeous and nicely decorated. Some depending on which one you book come with a jacuzzi. The staff here is so friendly and kind and make you feel welcomed. There are so loving and warm hearted and kind people. It is a peaceful environment. There is lots of place you can see in the area. Museums, malls, the zoo, restaurants. Plenty of place to go. I loved this place so much. It was a weekend I will never forget.

Was an excellent weekend getaway for my wife and I on our anniversary.  We only came from Davis but the ambiance of Amber House and the service by the staff made us feel like we were truly on a vacation.

It was great and I would recommend it to anyone thinking of visiting midtown Sacramento.

Booked room two days before 4 of July because it had wifi, t.v.  and was close to the historic district.  The B&B exceeded my expections.    Full breakfast, great evening snack, clean, quiet, and near restaurants & shops. Well worth the money spent.

The staff  (Laura and Carol) were very friendly & accommodating.  We brought  along our toddler.  This was his first vacation, and the staff was wonderful  They took care of his "baby" while he went out to dinner.   Room was very clean.  Bathroom had both tub and shower.  Nicely decorated throughout, without too much clutter that a child can knock over.  Great advice on restaurants and things to do.  Very professional staff.  Much better than staying in an impersonal 4 star rated chain hotel.

This review is a bit late, but I can still remember all the great details that Judith and her staff provided us. My husband and I stayed here last year for our one year anniversary. We each had a message as well and they were wonderful. The coffee and tea in the evening as well as cookies was so nice. I was impressed by the breakfast. My husband was on a strange diet at the time (no dairy) and I'm allergic to so much, but they were able to make a very nice breakfast for both of us and made sure that we enjoyed our overall stay. Given the opportunity to return we would.

I loved this place! We went there for our 25th Anniversary to stay after we saw George Winston at the Crest Theatre. The best was big and soft, we got candles for the 2 person spa tub, and we got rose petals on the bed! They served chocolate chip cookies and milk (the greatest tea for me). It was beautiful, and they were great to us. I have food intolerance, and they made me a breakfast that I could eat! It was really good too. They easily changed our breakfast from serving it in our room, to serving it outside on the porch. The only reason I gave it a 4 instead of a 5 was that I ordered Chocolate Port for our room later in the evening. They were supposed to have it ready in our room when we got back, but they had run out, and they only left a note that they ran out, with a credit on our charges. I would have preferred an alternative offer instead of the port, or if I would've thought, I might have gotten the brandy and some glasses from the reception/living room instead.
All in all though, a really great place. I will go back if I can!

    What an amazing B&B!

We stayed in the Dickinson room and absolutely loved it. At first we thought the heart shaped jacuzzi was a cutesy gimmick, but the shape was actually really great for two person tub action. We each had our own alcove, which was great for relaxing with our own personal space, but also big enough for two if we wanted to squeeze in for some extra close time.

The whole room and its decor were excellent. We didn't use the fireplace because it was summer, but I can imagine how nice it would be in winter. You can see it from both the bed and the bathroom and I bet it offers some excellent mood lighting.

The service was also top notch. When we checked in, we were asked several questions about how we wanted our stay to go. Did we want breakfast in bed? When did we want it? Did we want tea delivered? A newspaper? Cookies? I loved how customizable it was and hearing about all the services they offered (some places you never find out until you leave that there was complimentary something-or-other). On of the staff even offered to help us carry our bags out to the car when she saw we had a lot to carry. They were incredibly friendly and considerate. I wasn't planning on vacationing in Sacramento anytime soon, but Amber House makes me reconsider that. We'll definitely be back to try some of the other rooms as well.

Have to give this place 5 stars. Stayed in the Emily Dickinson room with the wife on a romantic local getaway. Nice room, plus a great breakfast. Next time, we're planning staying at least two nights.  Amber house is close to downtown Sac, so lots of stuff to do and best of all we stayed local and saved.

We held our wedding here. It was the perfect intimate setting. Judith and her husband did their best to meet all of our needs. Actually the event was perfect, and everyone in attendance agreed. And it was all very reasonable.

Wow! This place is great. For just a little more than the price of a Holiday Inn Express, my family got two beautiful rooms in a great old house with modernized plumbing. The furnishing were outstanding, the beds soft and cozy, the decor tasteful, the floors vacuumed to every corner, big fluffy white towels, the list goes on. Then, there's the Innkeeper. Nicest woman you'd ever want to meet, genuinely interested in taking care of her customers. She accommodated our family allergies without hesitation. Then, in the morning, there was fresh squeezed juice outside our door. At 9 AM, our scheduled breakfast time, we went into the dining room to find the main table all set for our family. Immediately, she brought out four huge fresh cut fruit bowls while we smelled and heard the bacon sizzling away in back. It was great! Why would anyone ever want to stay at a hotel when stuff like this is available?

I am way too late on my review. I went up to Sacramento in early January and stayed at this lovely B&B. The only reason they are not getting 5 stars is because we had minor issues with the toilet getting clogged and the light bulb burning out in our room. Otherwise, the room was gorgeous and clean. The fireplace and the heart shaped Jacuzzi with candles all over it def. added to the romantic atmosphere. The service was great and the breakfast was delicious. It is definitely not cheap, but you get what you paid for!
