Review from Jarred W.
Mt Vernon, NY
The prices for lunch are really good. And the food is very good, the deserts are pretty good.
However, the prices for dinner are awful. No, no, no. What I get in Zafran for $13 would cost over $20 here.
The food is also different than Zafran, as they use more traditional Ghee than oils.
It'd be five stars-though I prefer Zafran on flavoring-if their prices were just a bit lower. Its only affordable if you compare it to Bengal Tiger. You can more cheaply eat dinner...pretty much everywhere else that's take out. -

I've been coming here for quite some time now. This place is a real simple hole in the wall. It's fast food, in and out.
The food is very good, if a little pricey. The lunch box special is almost $10 with tax. Ouch! However, like I said the food is really good, and they give you pretty decent portions.
They have a rewards card, and when you buy 6 lunches the next one is free. Nothing special, nothing to jump up and down about, just good food at slightly high prices. I usually stop in every few weeks or so.
Of note, they're closed from 2pm-3pm during the day. So don't try to stroll in for a late lunch. -

So people really think this place is good?! YOU really must be kidding me! The place looks so dirty and dingy. Oh and has no one seen the mouse trap right by the sink with the dirty bacteria infested rag posing as a towel?? Or is it the beverage cooler also working as a refrigerator for the meat not turn you off?? I mean as soon as I saw that I knew we had to leave. Has this place fallen out of the radar for the dept of sanitation? The people that this place is good are basing it on the fact that they order delivery and have never set foot into this stomach virus waiting to happen. Don't waste your time at this location unless you want the bubonic plague!

Westchester, NY
Just got my delivery and while we ordered "a lot of extra Tamarind Sauce" they brought 2 tiny containers of it. They also didn't bring forks or knives or napkins. The driver got a great tip (before we knew the problems) for just driving down the road. I called over there and she argued over the fact that we didn't specify how many containers! I explained it was our first time ordering, so how would we know how tiny the containers were in the first place? If I argued with any of my customers I wouldn't be in business...what should have happened is that she would apologize to a new customer, and have her driver come literally less than 5 minutes away with forks, knives, napkins, and a sufficient amount of Tamarind Sauce as initially requested. Won't ever go back there

Have friends that are locals here...so I stopped in. The place doesn't look like much from the outside because it's along a strip of other stores and business..but the food is great.
It tastes like food from a high-end place, but with affordable prices and great service. The owners are good people...honest, and care that you are satisfied with their service.
I will definitely be returning. -

Rockaway Township, NJ
Ordered takeout for dinner and was very disappointed. Samosas and pakoras were overly greasy and not authentic, papadam was small, nor freshly fried, and came broken into a hundred pieces. Curries were flavorful enough, but again overly greasy. And way too overpriced.

Our whole office usually orders from this spot every few weeks and it just never dissapoints. We usually get the lunch boxes and assorted appetizers like samosas and stuff. I love the chicken lunch box, I get spinach sides or cauliflower or lentil beans. Honestly, you just cannot go wrong. I also always order an extra side of lunch naan, which is that warm, toasty, chewy bread that you can dunk into all your delicious sauces. This is my go-to-place for Indian food.

Review from Lady O.
New York, NY
Basic and tasty, but I've had better. 2.5 stars
Went here for the lunch special, and it definately reminded me of those cash-n-curry spots that populate my old office in Murray aka Curry Hill in Manhattan.
$10 exactly got me a giant plastic container of:
-Yummy, but stringy mild lamb curry
-Overly salty yet bland black lentils in a coconut cream like sauce
-Killer rice
-Average Naan
- Bottle of Shwepps
Like Lex G said, there's no decor to speak of, however, I would have stayed to eat there...but only because their flat screen tv was blaring the ESPY awards, and Justin Timberlake was singing and dancing like an idiot...and I support that.
Just know that its cash only...and the lunch special is pretty limited (think: two choices for meat, and three choices for vegetables.) -

White Plains, NY
I order from here about once a week.
The always arrives hot, and is at an appropriate temperature for me. Though I don't like it overly spicy.
I do agree that I would like to see the prices decrease a bit.
I would say the food quality is 4.5, but the value is at 2.5.
However, they have no competition in White Plains and therefore no reason to really do anything to fix the problems. -

White Plains, NY
I like this place, mostly because the prices are very reasonable for Indian food around here. However, in my opinion, the food doesn't really compare to the food at Bengal Tiger (which, as Lex C. already mentioned, is across the street and owned by the parents of Ambadi's owners). Two out of the three times I've been to Ambadi, the food has been way too spicy for me, even though I've asked for it mild. The ambience is nonexistent. No decor to speak of, except for the glass case full of colorful Indian sweets and a TV that's always on.
I think the food at Ambadi is pretty good, but it isn't excellent. It's great for when you want an Indian food fix and don't want to pay Bengal Tiger prices.Listed in: My Neighborhood

Westchester, NY
Indian street food-- fresh samosas bursting with flavorful veggies or juicy chicken, long, crisp dosas served with a spicy lentil sauce, smooth rice pudding spiked with almonds, and jewel-colored sweets imbued with rosewater.
This is just a smattering of the fresh, mouthwatering treats at Ambadi in White Plains, owned by the children of the owners of longtime Indian mainstay Bengal Tiger (across the street). How to choose between the two: if you want a fine dining experience, go to BT. If you want your Indian craving filled with no frills-- no manners to worry about, no utensils needed, no pretension whatsoever-- go to Ambadi. Simple as that.
Update 1/21: I went back recently with my family and among us we tried several chicken and fish dishes, all of which were outstanding. The combo platter is a bargain and I can't wait to go back.Listed in: White Plains-- not so plain!

Pompton Lakes, NJ
The premier place for Indian food, period. Affordable prices and excellent service. You'd be hard-pressed to find a better tasting Indian restaurant in New York.
This is primarily a take-out place. -

Mount Vernon, NY
I have gotten the lunch special a few times. The food is great, a large size portion of Chicken Mahkani, Rice, Cauliflower, Naan. is $6.95 during the lunch special from 11:30am - 3pm.
You are in and out the door for take out in a few minutes at most.
The ambiance does not lend to a fancy restaurant, for that you can go across the street to Bengal. But the food is authentic Indian cuisine and the prices cannot be beat.
The takeout lunch also comes with a handy reusable 3 compartment container. : ^ ) -

YUM!! You can't beat the price of this place, especially in Westchester. The lunch buffet is definitely inconsistent, BUT the dinners are always great. I also love their chai. And the sweets!! delicious! try them all!!
ALSO, this place is known for the infamous curry and rice girl video: http://www.youtube.com...
made by the owners and filmed at ambadi! -
Review from Tony P.
White Plains, NY
Considering this is the only Indian delivery in White Plains, you'd think they could start taking credit cards. Ambadi often lets me down. Not delivering certain days and bringing cold food on others. Two phone numbers on their menu usually results in one not working until you have to call the other. It's like they just posted cell phone #'s on them so you can guess by trial and error who's answering that day.
Someday the ethnic restaurants who deliver in this town will get their acts together. Right now, the majority of eateries here are Italian. But none of the valued others have it down when it comes to delivery. Ambadi is one of them. I'm always suspicious of a place that doesn't take credit cards. For delivery, it should be a no-brainer.
Never been there to eat on premises, but from seeing it from the street it's obvious the place is just meant for takeout. What White Plains could REALLY use is an Indian restaurant IN BETWEEN the less-casual-and-somewhat-pricey Bengal Tiger and Ambadi. -

Danbury, CT
Its a very small place. Few seats. Lunch box is $8.95 veg and non veg. Food is very tasty. They give you good amount of food. Box includes one naan. One chicken item. One veg item and rice. They do have a variety of south and north indian food. Will recommend this place.

Review from Jane H.
I did not know the physical location of this place until one day I was wandering White Plains, and found it on my way to the post office! It's a tiny place that I don't think I would want to eat in. I have always gotten delivery.
Truth be told, the prices are not bad, and the portions are large enough, but there are some quality issues.
Number one: I wanted lamb saag, and while they said they could make it, because it wasn't on the menu, they said they had to add one dollar to the price of the lamb dishes. That's a bummer.
Number two: On a few occasions there has been a rice issue. Usually it isn't bad, but I have to complain about the last time, where the rice was so gross, I refused to finish it. It tasted like it was cooked, then frozen, then shoved in a microwave to be served. Actually, it tasted like this is the second time that was done.
Number three: they say there's a dollar off for local college students, but they don't mean New York Medical College, even though we ARE local. I do believe Pace counts, but I don't know what other colleges count. That, or they are just trying to get that final dollar out of me.
Number four: When they deliver, there are no forks or spoons, no napkins, NOTHING - just your food. Even if you ask for it, they will not give it to you. They are super cheap!
Finally - I hate how they do not accept ANY credit cards. You're a restaurant, COME ON! We all know why you only accept cash, and in that case you shouldn't be charging us the restaurant tax, eh?
I suppose that is the price you pay for good Indian food at those prices. Truly - the prices ARE unreal!
Also - they deliver to Valhalla, which is rare for establishments in White Plains. -

White Plains, NY
I am a regular here, and have been for a few years. I think this is something which is hard to find- affordable Indian take-out. I recommend trying some of the cereal-based sides and paneer koti rolls, usually seldom-tried in the US but great Indian fare. If you are new to indian, there are great combo deals (may fave is muttar paneer). Anyways, I don't know any other indian take-out of this calibre around, so I think it's really a Westchester gem.

Pearl River, NY
This is a great resteraunt, if you want Indian food fast, and like was said by the previous Yelper, have an Indian fix and don't feel like paying Begal Tiger's prices. This place is also really good for take out, much faster delivery than many other White Plains resteraunts.

indian steet food .. love the concept .. really good food, reasonable prices, a bunch of unique stuff on the menu. i would definitely go back again.
the interior is very basic, no fancy table cloths or shiney silverware - but i am ok with that. the staff was friendly and our food came out quick. we got combo plates and it was a really good deal - $3 extra and you get a beverage, chutney, samosas or naan, and a sweet for dessert.
the vegetarian portion of the menu is a good size, which is always good to see.
this place is cash only!! thats the only drawback and its not one to keep me from this place .. dosa next time! -

Small restaurant, good food for a good price.
