My wife and I went here tonight.

In a dinning room was really cold!

Great deal for lunch special. Had beef string beans for less than $6 with soup, egg roll and rice. Good portion, string beans were cooked just right and beef was good as well. The sauce, however, was just too sweet.
The place is a little rundown so not that great for dining in.
Wouldn't mind coming again but will ask to make the food less sweet. -

This is one of my favorite delivery restaurant. Won ton soup has a lot of items in it like vegetables,ie. bok choy, mushrooms, hot & sour soup is one of the best with many items too. Mongolian lamb and Hunan chicken are usually what I get too. Fast delivery and good prices.

The food is consistently tastey. I always choose this place because of the speedy delivery. The prices may be a little on the high end, but not outrageous. If you're looking for quality chinese food without leaving the house, this is the spot. Delivers all over Redwood City too.

My family has enjoyed meals at Amazing Wok for years. The owner is very friendly and the prices are reasonable. The food is delicious. They're definitely our go-to for Chinese food.
They have green onion pancakes, which I love finding at Chinese restaurants. My favorites are the Mongolian beef, cashew nut chicken, and the chow mein. The lunch specials are generous and a great deal.
Full stars for Amazing Wok, give it a try next time you're in the area. -

dropped by here for lunch after reading the reviews and figured maybe some of the quality may have rubbed down the block from new Canton.
It is an old run down green and red interior of a shack. The board with daily specials had the Garlic Chicken as one of the specials.
I ordered that with Chicken ChowMein and Chicken with String Beans.Found the chow mein to be too soft for my liking as well as too sweet.
The Garlic Chicken and Chicken string beans however were really really good. I highly recommend them!!!!
I will definitely be returning to try other items on their list. -

This is a good place to eat. The curry chicken is fantastic and reasonably priced.
Great service too. -

We ordered take-out from the place, moo shu pork. The restaurant is decent, with a cozy ambiance and the food was ready when ordered. The moo shu was pretty good, with a large portion and good flavor.
If you live in the area, this is a great take-out place, they get your food ready quickly and they are in the downtown area of San Carlos. -

Went for lunch, decent food and portions for the price. Eating there is a little sketch; not exactly the cleanest looking place and the waiter/waitress was not the friendliest.
Still, I would recommend it as a good lunch spot. -

Great personal and friendly service. Great food. Love their chow mein which has chewy noodles. We also enjoy their chicken curry, string bean beef and chinese chicken salad. Have used them to cater large dinners for 25 people and more. They were very accommodating, and helped with figuring out how much food to order.

Review from Louis G.
San Carlos, CA
Little red riding Louis had gone on a long journey and didn't want to venture very far from home. He'd heard stories about a shop where he could get a bite of food to eat without leaving the safety of San Carlos - "The City of Good Living".
When he arrived he was a bit scared because it was empty.
He wimpered, "Hello?"
A fat guy replied, "Table for two, you sit by window."
He gestured his fat arm with sausage-like fingers over to a window table surrounded by a party with drooling babies that was just leaving. They had left enough dirty dishes to leave grandma cleaning for weeks.
The fat guy dropped off two 1-page menus. One side detailed the 3-course lunch specials offered Mon-Sat. The other side was chow mein and noodles. This is a long way from the food in the little village by the forest, Louis thought. Since it was actually Sunday, Louis wondered where the real menu was.
Louis said, "Oh my, Amazing Wok what a small menu you have!"
The fat man said, "This menu. You want drink?"
The first offering from the fat man was some sort of soup. The soup tasted like absolutely nothing. Grandma would probably say that they used fairy magic to make soup out of air to fool little boys. Louis wasn't sure what to make of it.
"Oh my what bland and disgusting soup you have Amazing Wok! Do you have any chili pepper?" Louis said.
"I get for you." said the fat man.
Sure enough, with the chili pepper the soup tasted like chili pepper. This was great, Louis thought.
A young lady brought out some white rice and the three dishes Louis and his companion had ordered: Singapore noodles, Kung Pao Chicken, and Hunan Beef. Each dish tasted of low quality ingredients and lacked depth of flavor. Grandma's apple pies never had this problem. Little red riding Louis didn't know what to do.
After the meal had gone on for a while, the fat man came back.
"Oh my what a small check you have given us Amazing Wok!" Louis said.
The fat man said, "You done?"
Loud slurping could be heard in the background. It was the proprietors eating god knows what. Surely it didn't come from the forest!
As Louis was leaving, he finally recognized what was going on. How could it be that http://yelp.com had fooled him? What he thought was actually a 4-star Chinese restaurant in San Carlos was actually a f******* piece of s*** that is not even worth serving to the family dog!
Young little red riding Louis learned a valuable lesson that day. If you see a three course meal for $5.08, it doesn't matter what yelp says. It's a piece of s*** restaurant in 4-star yelp clothing.Listed in: Phonies

SO RUDE.
Having already eaten my packed lunch at the office, but not having taken an official lunch, my coworker invited me to go with a bunch of other ppl from our company to this place to socialize and eat (if I wanted).
The place isn't that big and somewhat rickety - but expected from a small Chinese restaurant. I was really debating whether or not I should get something to eat since I already ate. After glancing at the menu, I decided to just request some tea.
Lunch consists of the typical cheap Chinese lunch set fare. Add any one of these with rice: Broccoli beef, sweet and sour pork, kung pao chicken, etc. If you're Chinese (like me) you're know what this means. It's not an "authentic" restaurant that specializes in any particular Chinese region of cuisine. It's just "Chinese" food or what Americans think Chinese food is.
So I passed on food when it got to me but asked if I could get some tea. I got this quizzical glare and frown and a prompt huff... then the lady moved onto the next person at our table.
Yeah. I didn't get my tea. I was ignored the WHOLE time. And being Chinese, I felt even more insulted. AND I heard them talking about me in Chinese. Yeah that's right, bitches, I heard you and I knew what you were saying.
Our table had about 10 people. You'd think 10 people giving this place business was great (there were plenty of filled tables as it was anyway)! And you're mad this one tiny girl just wants some tea? Well, eff you. I am NEVER coming here again. Screw socializing during my lunch hour. I'd rather sit at my desk staring at the ceiling for my lunch hour than come here.
And yes, the food looked greasy and smelled gross and I was offended that this was even called "Chinese" food. DON'T COME HERE.Listed in: San Carlos??

I have been ordering here for years. My ultimate favorite is the cashew chicken..........I really think I'm addicted to it and must have it every 4-6 weeks.
I like how you order enough food for 10 people and they tell you 45 minutes for delivery and they show up in 30 minutes.........Its the magical elves in the kitchen:)
The lunch specials are phenominal!!!!! under 6.00 and delicious!
I would say one of the best chinese takeout places in san carlos!!!!!!!

Cost effective, standard Chinese fare for take out and delivery on week nights when we don't feel like cooking dinner. We end up ordering extra so it stretches for another dinner. When I don't have a menu in front of me, they are always helpful with recommendations.
Nothing especially memorable, but they're consistent and service is considerate.Listed in: My San Carlos

This was a recommendation from vicky t. who I falied to meet at the Naglee Elite event. However I found out she works down the street from me and hopefully she's going to be cranking out some more reviews.
So my co-worker and I were off to fill our weekly new Chinese restaurant venture. This place is located on the far end of Laurel away from Downtown San Carlos and I don't even remember seeing it that last time I was over in the area. So we walk in around 1pm and it's empty save for one guy who jus tfinished his lunch. The place is pretty small with your typical Chinese art adorning the walls and this wild green paint theme that runs throughout.
We are immediately seated and trade the lunch special menus for the full ones. We go for:
- Won Ton soup
- Potstickers
- Curry Chicken
- Lamb with mixed veggies
The won ton soup has a great broth but the won tons are different from the Cantonese style ones I'm used to. Stull pretty tasty howver. CUrry chicken is flavor and also decently moist. We've run into our fair share of bland, dry curry chicken, so this was tops of what we've found in the area. Lamb was also very tender and flavorful, with the sauce having an interesting richness I'd never had before. The potsickers were good and quite large, but not as good as some we'd had, so I'd say they were the only average thing we had.
Service is very quick and friendly and soon after we started eating the place filled up and they were able to keep up with the growing crowd. Another good little place along the San Carlos "Chinatown" stretch. -

My favorite place to order Chinese take-out. It is affordable, the flavors and cooking techniques are traditional, and THE best part is that their delivery is AMAZINGLY fast. I mean, almost scary. I live a 10 min. drive away and of the 10 or so times I have ordered from here, it is here in 30 mins. I have yet to find a quicker delivery place, period.
I've had nearly half their menu and everything is great. They had a great won ton soup, they've satiated my craving on numerous occasions. Their pretty easy to understand over the phone, which is a plus, considering I ordered from somewhere else a couple of weeks ago from a place (which shall remain nameless) and it took me close to 15 mins. just to place my order since we were have some SERIOUS language barriers.
I only wish they had brown rice but otherwise than that this place is really, really, really good. Oh, I've also ordered their catering trays which feed plenty.Listed in: My fav. Peninsula spots

Bad news: Going to have to pull there takeout menu from my rotation.
Good news: There are at least five other Chinese restaurants on Laurel St. alone. Walking distance from where I live is a huge plus.
Only tried the Hot & Sour Soup and Crab Ragoons before. This time I tried the Won Ton Soup, Crab Ragoons (again) Cashew Chicken and Sweet & Sour Pork. The Ragoons were still very yummy. The soup lacked any flavor whatsoever. Between the Chicken and the Pork I'd say I favored the Chicken more. Overall both were disappointing.
Tip: For takeout orders make sure you ask for extra soy sauce and sweet & sour sauce. Very stingy.
On the look out for my new favorite Chinese restaurant...1 Previous Review: Show all »

We ordered amazing wok last night, and I found it to be meh at best honestly.
I've had a lot of quality Chinese food in my day, and the amazing wok really didn't live up to its name. The flavors just weren't there, and we ended up throwing away the leftovers =/
We ordered chow mein/sweet and sour pork/ hunan beef.
It just didn't do it for me :[

Long Island, NY. Known for mall hair, inscrutable accents, strip malls...and yet, I miss it . Because on Long Island you can get kick-ass bagels, greasy good pizza and delicious faux-chinese food delivered to your door from any number of local joints. I had no idea I would miss the chinese food, and no idea that I had it so good with all the options for delivery. Living in the SF suburbs, delivery is hard to come by. My old favorite chinese delivery upped their prices and their amount for delivery, and I already felt that I had to over-order to qualify for delivery before they changed their policy. So I was in the market for a change. Amazing Wok did not disappoint.
Easy to order, quick delivery (they managed to find my house even though the porch light is perpetually dead and you can't read the number) and the food was pretty darn good. Ordered the orange beef--not as good as Sichuan Delight, but close--sesame chicken, and Ma po tofu. Nothing jumped out at me as being amazing, but I'm looking forward to trying other dishes. I'm thrilled to have found a place that will deliver decent food, even if it's not as good as the crap i grew up with. -
Review from Catherine W.

As far as I can tell, 3 things are good here:
1) Hunan Beef
2) Honey Walnut Shrimp
3) Those green beans (you'll know what I'm talking about)
These three things are really very tasty when freshly made.
Good place for takeout or delivery. As far as leftovers go, I found that they did not hold well and kind of started to disintegrate rapidly. I am not kidding! The next day, my delicious Chinese food had transformed into a pasty, weirdly textured food product.
I ate at the restaurant once and it's not a good idea. I love hole in the walls, but this is kind of a sh** hole in the wall. It was winter, it was cold, the door kept opening and there was a suspicious floaty thing in my water. The people who work there were frantically answering the phone, getting ToGo orders together and trying to wait tables - it was chaos! Not much for a relaxing environment. My advice is order the chow and hoof on out of there. Retreat to your own home and enjoy the sweet and savory flavors the day you order it, before they turn into a pumpkin the next day. -

I went there today because of the good reviews and was not impressed at all. I only ordered their vegetarian chow mein, bbq pork fried rice and schezuan broccoli. The best thing was the rice. That I would give 4 stars. But the noodles were not very good at all. Seemed oily and bland. The broccoli just wasn't to my liking either. Will not be going there again. Maybe they have better dishes but these are my faves and typically what I order. Very friendly service though.

Price & Quality, 5-Stars! Just purchased my first Mongolian Beef Lunch special and the portion & price, $6.45 (accompanied w/Fried Rice side OR regular rice) is a deal! Went to other restaurants in San Carlos, including Redwood City, which averages to 8.95 o $10 for a MUCH smaller portion. Finally, a Chinese Restaurant that'll satisfy me in San Carlos!

Redwood City, CA
Popular local Chinese takeout place way down at the sleepy part of Laurel St. closer to Redwood City/Whipple and a block from Micha's. They do have very decent prices and $4.88 lunch specials.
Green Onion Pancake ($4.58) - 3 stars - very doughy and probably too many scallions. Happened to pick one of the most overpriced items on the menu when so many of the other items are very reasonably priced.
West Lake Beef Soup ($5.58) - 4 stars - tasty minced beef soup in thickened chicken broth with mushroom and egg white. I liked it a lot if you like this kind of soup.
Beef Chow Mein ($5.88) - 3.5 stars - HUGE ORDER of chow mein noodles. Reasonably tasty but their meat pieces were gigantic as if they just took a machete and hacked some pieces off a cow. The take out box of noodles must have weighed 2-3 pounds.
Funny as I was walking in, a random customer was walking out and told me this was the best Chinese food anywhere. They must be doing something right to earn such unsolicited endorsement.
Bottom line: Very reasonably priced Americanized Chinese food. If that's what you are looking for, then this place should do you good. If you need more authentic Chinese food (which I was), this place is not for you. -

This is a small chinese restaurant with a green door on Laurel Street.
The food is average. I usually order the chicken with eggplant during lunch. It comes with soup and something fried.
Service is okay, but you get the feeling you're being rushes out. However, one time, I saw the lady owner go postal on customer over something....
Never coming back after seeing that... -

Oily. Tasteless. Bland.
I ordered one of the specials of the day, Mandarin Chicken. It had absolutely no flavour. In a group of 5 people, nobody enjoyed their meal.
Every dish and even the egg rolls were extremely oily - so oily that I considered swallowing a maxi pad in order to absorb the oil.
I left the restaurant wanting to force myself to purge Amazing Wok's imitation of lunch and return to my preferred San Carlos Chinese restaurant to have a real meal.
Skip this place and head a few blocks north to King Chuan Restaurant. -

I LOVE THEM! I LOVE THEM! I LOVE THEM!
I only wish I could pick up their entire restaurant and plop it back down so that it is around the corner from my home. It is that damn good... and they are exactly the kind of Chinese restaurant that I am looking for... a really good, cheap, authentic Chinese takeout restaurant that is consistent and dependable.
I used to come here for lunch when I worked nearby. A group of us would go almost weekly... sometimes 3 times a week! We came here so often that the waitress knew our orders by heart! Now, I only stop by if I'm in the area.
Everything here is tasty but my favorite is their spicy chicken and string beans. Oh so good good good! Yummy flavorful pieces of chicken with perfectly fried (then sauted) string beans in a deliciously spicy brown sauce with lots of red chili peppers. Oh yum yum yum!
And because I order this from their special lunch menu, not only do I get a generous heaping of this perfectly yummy dish, but I get rice, hot and sour soup and an appetizer (egg roll or even better... their crab won ton). All this for only 5 bucks... yeah, you read that right... 5 freaking dollars. Now you know why I want them around the corner from my house!
And... if you eat like a normal person... sometimes you can even pack the other half for dinner... but if you're like me... 99% of the time, I finish my dish... even when I'm full... I mean, I intended to bring the leftovers home... but as I'm waiting for the waitress to come by and give me a to-go box, the dish is just sitting there in front of me... saying, "pick at me some more... come on... just one more bite..." And then before you know it, my dish is empty and I no longer have a need for a to-go box.
Note: No freaking restaurant near my house can beat their spicy chicken and string beans. I must kidnap their chef and make him mine!!! -

They have a very good take-out service. They are speedy and their food, although pretty much in-line with your typical Chinese/American faire, is consistently good. I would recommend it if you have a hankering for Chinese Food and want to get it quick.
My personal favorite entree of theirs is the orange chicken. -

What a hidden gem! I absolutely love coming here for lunch with co-workers. The food is the best Chinese food I've ever had in the Bay Area... and it's cheap! My co-workers and I always come here for lunch, spend $6 a piece, and we each get tea, soup, an appetizer, and an entree!
It's not the most glamorous place on the peninsula, as indicated by the dirt cheap prices, but its definitely one of the best. The atmosphere is kind of kitchsy, and the servers have "personality" (a little rude) but I'd go here every week if I could. -
Review from Jason I.
San Francisco, CA
Okay - so I always have no expecatations when it comes to chinese takeout. I know, "half empty" - but it is just that I have had WAY TOO MANY "um, what is this we are eating" expriences with Chinese takeout over the years. But Yelpers said 4 Stars, so I called, drove to a friend's place in San Carlos, and by the time I got there the food had arrived (15 minutes earlier than they said it would - works for me!).
So here it is - The food was fantastic. And affordable. Started off with the Hot and Sour soup. This was one of the better ones I've had in a long time. The first two bites, I turned to my friend and said, "what do you think". We came to the conclusion that we didn't think we were going to like it because it had no "hot" to go with the sour. Um, until the third bite. It sneaks up on you after the spice settles in your mouth. I loved it. The chicken salad was good. Beware - it is diced breaded chicken over iceberg lettuce, so not very original - however the dressing made up for it (nice and gingery).
Mongolian beef was great. Nice veggies and the beef was tender. Sweet and Sour Chicken was great as well. Now my mantra is - I NEVER order anything that is breaded, fried and then covered in a sauce. Leads to too many questionable items on my plate. I didn't eat it, but my two friends said it was very good, and no questionable items - it was all chicken meat.
So there you have it. Hot and Sour Soup, Chicken Salad, Mongolian Beef, Sweet and Sour Pork and rice for 5 gave us dinner one night for three, and leftovers for dinner for two the next nice. ALL FOR $42.00 including free delivery and a nice tip for the delivery guy. You just can't beat that - fo' sho. -

Ahhhh, the Amazing Wok, how truly amazing you are for your lunch specials, your tasty chicken, your cramped, hot interior, your spices...this place is awesome! Plus they deliver!
This is a popular lunch haunt for us, as the lunch specials (tea, soup, rice, appetizer, entree) are awesomely priced at around $5, the service is fast, the food is hot...I have no reason for complaint! For cheap Chinese food this is the place in Redwood City! I like their chicken dishes best. Kung Pao Chicken, Chicken with String Bean, Chicken in mysterious spicy sauce...yum.
This place does an amazingly good job of packing the people into a very small dining room. We came with a group of 15 once for a goodbye lunch and we had to get cozy with each other, but we all fit! And they managed to smoosh some other patrons in too.
The only real downsides are the parking (there is street parking, but sometimes it's packed) and the lack of AC. In the summer it gets really hot in here, especially when you're guzzling hot tea and soup. -

I really only have one pet peeve. I know it's unrealistic, but is it at all possible to not use the same pot for all the dishes?
i am terribly allergic to chicken and i always get the beef. I even go as far as to check for any runaway chicken pieces hiding in the rice. I never find the chicken but I have gotten sick more than once.
I guess I need to stop tagging along to lunch with people from the building )))) -

What this place is: Consistent, good, cheap Chinese food hole-in-the-wall for takeout, delivery, or lunch. This is my go-to place for Chinese food for several years now. There are better places around, but not for this price. The lunch specials are the best value around--for $6, you get soup, appetizer, rice, and entree. The portions are big enough that I regularly get 2 to 3 meals out of it (hubby only gets one serving, but he's a big eater). I do not like their sweet and sour pork or lemon chicken, but otherwise the food has been decent.
What this place is not: Full service restaurant with tablecloths and people who speak fluent English and will accommodate your whims. If something is wrong, they will do their best to fix it, but don't expect the same level of service you get at Yank Sing in SF (which also costs a lot more) or even China Village in Belmont (also more expensive). Don't take a date or clients here unless you're trying to get rid of them. It's just clean enough; no "fluff".
I have had only one occasion where we ordered for delivery and found the food to be mediocre. I happened to be there for lunch the next day, and mentioned this to the lady who I think is the owner (speaks very little English). She told me that I should have called to complain, and if that happens again in the future I am to call so she can send out a new batch of food. What more can you ask for from the local hole-in-the-wall? -
Review from Abha R.

The restaurant is simple and spartan - but that is hardly representative of the food! The takeout service is fast and the food is very fairly priced.
We ordered an all-vegetarian menu - spring rolls, vegetable chow mein, vegetable fried rice, family style tofu, and the Szechuan eggplant. The spring rolls (4, not 2!) were delicious and not too oily (a common affliction). The chow mein and the fried rice were very tasty, and the eggplant was tender and close to perfection. The tofu was a wee bit disappointing - it was a little overcooked, and the dish could have included more vegetables and fewer pieces of tofu - but overall, it was still quite good. For every $20 you spend, you get a can of soda. I'll definitely be eating here again! -

This tiny place does a huge take out business and also delivers, but trust me, eat here. The food comes out piping hot, the meats are tender, the veggies super fresh and everything I have had is great. The lunch specials are really a deal. They do the Hong Kong pan fried noodles perfectly, crispy edges. The dry green beans are another favorite, spicy and delicious. The fried tofu dishes are excellent with the tofu almost melting in your mouth. I live in Cupertino, no shortage of Asian dining choices near me, but the chow mein here is the best. I often order it to go and take it home for later! Yes, it has not changed much in the 20 years I have been coming here, but it has never disappointed.

After lamenting the lack of decent Chinese food in the San Carlos area for years now, I am so happy that my hubs recently stumbled upon Amazing Wok. We have been in serious need of a solid Chinese take-out place and have been going to Chef Peking for the past 3 years.
My hubs first discovered the lunch specials here. Then we tried taking-out dinner and were pleased. The only downside is their general's chicken isn't very good (which is a dish we like to order frequently) but their ma poh tofu and beef with oyster sauce have not disappointed. There may be hope for San Carlos yet! -

San Carlos, CA
This is our default delivery option, and a nice occasional quick lunch treat to eat in person, too. The thing I like most about their lunch specials is that they are served family style! Instead of getting a plate with your entree, rice/noodles, and appetizer bit, you get served individual cups of soup, and then the entrees and rice/noodles come out on big plates. This makes it easy to share among friends, or with my sweetie. I've never been served like this at any other chinese place for lunch specials, and I really like it.
So, the dine-in experience: yes, the place is small. It actually makes me feel like I'm eating in at someone's kitchen table. The way the food comes out and the folks working there -- it just makes me feel very comfortable and welcome.
As for the food itself: fresh ingredients, freshly cooked, in simple tasty presentations. The one time I ate at another San Carlos chinese place, the "beef" was some sort of processed pressed meat product stuff, so bad we couldn't finish it. At Amazing Wok, the ingredients look and taste *fresh*. I love the green beans, both by themselves and in the beef with string beans. Our family is also a big fan of the pot stickers, walnut prawns, mongolian beef, and General's chicken. The latter is what I'd call "big ball format": largish rounded balls of breaded chicken in a spicy brown sauce. (I mention this because some places have the more "Su Hong" style, with small diced lightly breaded chicken, less sauced.)
Finally, they're amazingly fast. I've managed to order, eat, and get out in 20 minutes, which is a great thing when I'm running late before work. -

I was meeting some colleagues for lunch in San Carlos and thought I would check out Yelp for restaurants. My friends suggested Chinese food, I read the reviews for Amazing Wok and thought we'd try it.
As I drove down Laurel Street and past restaurants: Town, Spasso, and La Hacienda - I was wondering if I passed the Amazing Wok. Then to my left was this hole in the wall restaurant. Yup it's the Amazing Wok. Then I thought - I hope the food was better than what appeared from the outside.
As we walked in, this place had customers seated at five of its nine tables. A very good sign as the appearance inside was not much better than the outside. We ordered from the lunch menu and all entrees were $5.95 which included hot & sour soup, appetizer, and choice of steamed or fried rice.
We ordered broccoli beef, hunan chicken, and vegetarian fried rice. The food was tasty and the price was fair for such large portions. This is not a place to bring a first date, but if you're married w/family it'll do.
