Superman's cape.   Batman's utility belt.   Green Lantern's lantern.   Ever wish you can see what they look like in real life?  Yeah, me too!  Well, at Amazing Fantasy you can!  Color me awe inspired.  Every time I let the inner geek in me back out, I find myself at Amazing Fantasy.  And every time I'm there, I always catch myself the first few seconds standing with my mouth wide open, staring up at that flowing red cape, or that yellow belt with who knows what's inside, or that lantern that I'm sure would light up if only I had a power ring to charge.  Mind you, these are not toys.  No sir.  These are actual life-sized replicas.  And if you prefer Avengers Mansion to the Hall of Justice, they also have items like Thor's hammer and Captain America's shield on display.  I know, right!

Ok nerd, reel it back in a lil.  So AF carries comic books, graphic novels, action figures, books, T-shirts, cards, etc.  Pretty much anything a good comic book store should have.  And the fact that they've been around forever when several other comic book stores have come and gone must mean they're doing something right.  The store space is not as big as I'd like, so the majority of their stock is new items I'd say.  The middle of the floor does have a substantial amount of back issues though.  But the walls are covered with shelves that are almost overflowing with stock, so you'd be hard pressed to walk in here and not walk out with something cool in your geeky hands.

Every time I find myself on Irving, I make it a point to pop my head in.  Although my wallet can't really afford to support that old habit on a weekly basis, I will drop a penny or two on the occasional Walking Dead graphic novel or try to keep up with my Sheldon Cooper T-shirt collection.  Sure you can probably find a lot of stuff online, but where's the fun in that???  And if you do make a trek out here, be sure to bring your parking karma cuz we all know parking out there can be a female dog.  Excelsior!

Love this place.  Have been coming here every week for the past two months *yeah, I still geek out*.  Their selection is amazing for a small place.  Jeff, the owner has always been spot on with recommendations and knows his stuff - storylines changes in character and even what's going on within the companies.
Now the my weekly visit has become a ritual, don't think I will get my comics (or clothing) from anywhere else.

Nice store. It close to where I live, which gives it an automatic bonus.
A little small. Has a lot of potential, if people still read any type of book.

I'm trying to decide whether this place is more *amazing* or *fantastic*. I am not a comic book freak, unless you count Archie and Little Dot, which ranked among my favorites as a child growing up in a family with an empire of Southern California Comic book and baseball card stores. Yes. It's true. My grandparents retired when they were VERY young and opened a bazillion comic shops with family money. I therefore grew up with every girly comic in production past and present as well as two complete sets of WWF trading cards from 85-89 or some such nonsense! That was a bit of an obsession for a while...

Anyhoo, Amazing Fantasy carries a pretty awesome selection for the contemporary comic fan. They pack an awful lot into that tiny space: comics, collectibles, some trading cards, and (best of all!!!) t-shirts with superhero logos on them. I found myself in a bind, needing 5 different superhero t-shirts and on VERY short notice. These guys came through and were very helpful at locating sizes and making sure I was satisfied. I ended up leaving with way more stuff than I needed because even a non-comic-fan like me found stuff of interest within these *amazing* and *fantastic* walls!

The boy with the glasses who works there is an absolute sweetheart! It may not be Grandpa's comic book shops, but I'll go comic-geek for these guys any day!!!

Nice little unassuming comic shop. I had passed Amazing Fantasy multiple times before but I only realized it was a comic store when I was on the train with my sister going home (and it was her last day in the city, sniff).

We stopped in a few minutes before closing and, after perusing through a few other comic shops (plus several book shops), we finally found the comics we were looking for: Archie!

Amazing Fantasy has a wider selection of comics, although of course its main "genre" is action hero material. Still, we were more satisfied with the selection here than at Isotope.

Sure, Isotope had the lounge-y feeling about it, but Amazing Fantasy got the job done in terms of a comic book store. They have a lot of back issues, so that's a plus.

    Yeah I am a dork.

And that is why i love this place so much.  Frank, Palla, and Alexis all have their own specialties and knowledge on various genres.  I admit to be a saver here so they hold all my monthly books and still keep the condition at NM...like i really give a fuck..i am not one of them CGC collectors- lame!

When i just started reading again, i creeped in slow with trades, a few one-shots here and there...then Palla told me to grow some balls (okay those weren't his exact words) and jump in again..i did.  Fuckin hooked again.

I read all my old titles i used to grab and a few others i got turned on 2: Astonishing, All-Star titles, Batman, JLA, New Avengers, Runaways, Wolvie, Wonder-Woman, Outsiders, Ex-Machina, Amazing (tho Spidey titles suck hard right now...) and others..

The fellas don't mind if you hang out and read some and it helps that all their books are not bagged and taped for that purpose.  This shop has tons of personality as you will usually hear episodes of saved by the bell or other classic sitcoms playing over their speakers.

I remember it as Comix and Comix but I must be in a different dimension altogether. freakin $4 for a comic book, holy shiet !! I bought Uncanny X-Men comics way back when for 60 CENTS, yes that's right, 40 cents less than a buck. what in the world.

I have my eye on a supercute Flash baby tee for $19 (I don't even like the Flash, the shirt is just cool) and a couple of their action figures (neato but upwards of $10). the dude was so nice and helpful, asking if I was shopping for my boyfriend. have you never seen a fashionable woman who enjoys comics ? oh excuse me, I meant graphic novels, the term the nerds use to sound less nerdy. but for $4 a pop, forget it ! that's why they invented eBay, where I get my 80's comics for only a few bucks over cover price.

ps -- Amazing has a great selection of older comics (in boxes underneath the bins) but no Uncanny X-Men. boo

parking on irving is tough so if you see parking, take it, it might be as close as you get.

so, i've been going to this store since i was a kid.  they used to be named something else.

if you want new comics, this place is more than adequate.  if you don't even know what you're doing, if you have lots of questions, i'm sure that Frank(he's been here a LONG TIME) can help you.  Really friendly guy and is really knowledgeable.  So if you need a catch up, maybe you should ask him.

This is more about buying your new comics, tshirts, and whatever is hot collectable.  If you want something for sure, order it ahead of time.

I haven't sold any comic books here in a long time.  I usually don't suggest to anyone to sell their comics to anyone.  Usually you look at a price guide and you WILL NOT get what you want.  Expect to sell your comics for 25% of what you think the value of the comic is worth.  That sounds sad, but its the truth.  THE MARKET IS SATURATED.

I heart you! I really do! I have been coming to this place off and on for more than 10 years. Close to 13, actually...Back when this was still called Comics and Comics. I would go to the C&C over on Lombard and Columbus before they closed their doors for good. Kind of a trek to get out here from North Beach but at least they have a selection of breakfast joints for me to try out. I remember waiting for them to open so I can get my comics I have saved up. God, that was such an awful addiction I had back then.

Anyways, I went back today to look around and see what I can pick up. I haven't stepped into a comic book store to buy anything in more than 5 years. That was when I went to the final C&C over on Taylor and North Point. Not sure why they even attempted to open a comic book store in Fisherman's Wharf...Baffling even to this day...So I looked around, admiring the toys they had on the top of the shelves of comics. The guy that was working there was nice. Only asked me if I needed any help after it looked like I was lost. I kindly declined and continued to admire. I also looked at the new titles they had. Marvel MAX? A more adult version? Astonishing X-men? The hell? This is why I stopped my obsession of comic books. Too many variants of the titles I used to love back when comics were comics and not a juggernaut money maker for the publishers...But, what can you do? Progress is progress.

So I picked up a collected issue of Ultimate Team-ups. Every last one in one book size graphic novel. This is what I read now. I would rather buy them all in one than collect issue after issue. So I talked with the dude and I mentioned that I used to go there when it was still C&C and also said I swore I saw one of the old employees open this new place up. He said yeah, one of the ex-employees is the owner. He also went on to mention how long ago it was that the store opened. Then we got into a discussion about C&C and how they sucked ass and how they closed every location. Did you know the owner of C&C is in federal prison for bilking the elderly after the 9/11 tragedy? Something to do with insurance fraud and non-existent retinal scanners...Loser. Serves him right for fucking with a good thing.

SO in closing, this place is AWESOME!!! I will be back more times in the future. YAY!!!

I'm in love with Amazing Fantasy.

The shopkeepers are very helpful and have pretty cool attitudes. If you have children Amazing Fantasy is very kid friendly, they recommend the right titles and have a nice selection for them also. They have a nice selection of toys NOT behind the counter so you can actually hold and look at them. The comics are organized well so its easy to find what you're looking for and they have no problem ordering anything for you if they don't carry what you want.

I've been a regular for 2 years and i plan on staying one. Frank rules!

I am kinda torn giving this place a crappy review, but every other time I have been in there, the staff is either awkward or just rude. I am a 25 yr old man and I walked in there with a smoothie last time I was there and the guy behind the counter gave me a dirty look and told me to leave the drink on the dirty street outside while I browse. I am an adult and I know how to keep a cup of from spilling onto a comic.

Moreover, their selection isn't very good anyways and their shelves are awkwardly low to the ground.

I wish this was a good shop, but it just isnt.

I like this shop, even if they made me stand outside until I was done with my coffee. Hey, they don't know if I have the physical coordination of a dolt or not...

The store is bright, inviting, and has t-shirts and toys. I don't find the people working there particularly engaging, but at the same time they aren't hassling me beyond my cuppa joe. Also, they seem to actually have the comics I want, if I somehow can't get them at my regular store. Moreover, the location makes it great stop after going to the park or having brunch in the area.

Wow! I've been buying comics from Frank for nearly 25 years! It was an pretty good shop when it was a Comics & Comix location, but was even better under Frank's ownership. Just recently he started displaying his very impressive collection of comic book props in the store, which add to the Super-cool feel.

Amazing Fantasy carries a wide selection of books,  and if it's not in stock , Frank will order for you and call to let you know when it's in. Even when I lived in Korea, Frank had no problem holding books for me for several months!  Amazing Fantasy may not be flashy, but it's a good solid store that won't steer you wring.

A fairly straight to point comic shop.  The square-shaped store is bordered by new releases and trade paperbacks while an island of back-issues are situated in the middle.  Toys and statues are also featured in the glass counter where the cashier is.

The variety of comics are pretty mainstream.  There aren't even a lot of Image comics.  I asked the owner if he had "The Goon: Chinatown", and he gave me really baffled facial gesture.  This was surprising since I saw the monthly single-issue on his shelves.

Amazing Fantasy is a casual comic store for those looking for a quick superhero splurge.

Amazing Fantasy is a great comic book shop.  It's like walking into a bag of holding (shout out to all you DnDers out there).  The shop is rather small but they still manage to have a great selection of the main publishers, a surprisingly decent number of indy comics, an impressive stash of back issues and TPBs, and a small smattering of toys, t-shirts, comic supplies and other random comic-related paraphenalia.

The shop is clean, well-lit and right off the N Judah for easy access.  There is a good selection of restaurants and coffee shops in the area so after you pick up your swag you can go and devour your pile at a nearby establishment (sounds gross, doesn't it?) if you just can't wait to confirm yet again how horribly Rob Liefield draws feet.

Everyone I've met on the staff there has been friendly and helpful; I would definitely recommend swinging by to get your latest fix of Batman, Spider-man or Shanna the She-Devil.

Hubby seems to like comic books so we went it.  It's small and very organized.  The guy working there seems to know his stuff and is very helpful.  I heard him helping a customer and telling her he'll check around to find her the book she is looking for.

Hubby picked up Watchmen comic book -he didn't buy it.  He said there's going to be a movie out soon for it.  Oh joy, can't wait.

There's comic books for Sin City, Captain America, Superman, American Splendor, Hulk, Bathman, Wonder Woman, etc.  Lots of Marvel Comics, Disney, Pez toys, and other toys I'm not familiar.

This is an extremely cute comic book shop. On the smaller side, but there was something about them that makes them special.

They actually have lots of books. Not full of crap like clothes, action figures and cards. They are full of issues and trade paperbacks (mostly Marvel, but I'm not going to quibble over semantics when I'm a DC/Vertigo fan and sometimes you just have to deal with it).

They have quite a few shelves of hardcovers as well. Most of it is all pretty mainstream, but they carry the things I like and they're close enough to the park where I can hop off the N Judah and head inside on my way to the museum. Best of all, when summer rolls around, this is the perfect place to pick up a few books and read for a bit in the botanical garden.

I only wish it were just a little bigger.

I have to make an update, if ONLY for the 'Amazing Alexis' who works there.  'Amazing Alexis' (as my friend has dubbed him) works behind the counter, and also works the cards, if you get my drift.

I don't know WHAT kind of hoodoo voodoo is going on in that store, but we've been in a couple of times and he's managed to blow our minds to infinity and beyond!

Now my friend is addicted to the paranormal, and I now know the exact time and date of my death - but it's all good, because Amazing Fantasy feat. the Amazing Alexis is here to stay!

Frank and the gang have everything you can want in that little store in the inner sunset.

If you don't see it they will find it for you.  Here are a bunch of guys who know their media from golden age to the modern day indie. If you like horror over the cape and cowl there's a home for you here too.

Location is very convenient and there are  plenty of places to pick up a coffee and sit back and toss yourself into the imaginations of  comic book legends.

if you want a NO hassle, nonjudgemental, low key place to pick up your comics.. Amazing Fantasy is a comfy place to visit.

its worth checking out Franks collection of what is super in comics hanging on the wall too.

I was stoked to see that they had a full-length volume of Ashley Wood's work on the shelf. And maybe I missed it, but I was hoping that they'd stock some David Mack. The seemed clean and well-kept--it just might have benefited from some benches...

As comic places go, I'm still partial to Hijinx in SJ, but this is definitely a runner up

I may not look like it...but I LOVE comic books. I'm a comic book geek. I used to collect comics and trading cards of Marvel X-men. As a grown up (kinda) I have come to appreciate the mystery and fantasy about them.

This place is packed full of books. Not full of cheap figurines or clothes. But BOOKS. The guys are pretty helpful and they let you browse all you want. Even if you don't buy anything.

In my opinion, Amazing Fantasy is the ultimate neighborhood comic book shop.  They always put out their new books on time each Wednesday (or Thursday).  The staff is always friendly, helpful and knowledgeable.  It's a small store, but they mostly seem to have what I'm looking for or they can order it (with the exception of a Gene Yuen Yang graphic novel).  The smallness is actually fortunate for me or I would spend excess time inside.

It is very heartening to me that the owner grew up in the Inner Sunset and worked at the original Comics & Comix store on Lombard & Mason back in my comic-book formative years (1980's).

If this store were located in the Castro, even more Non-Marvel/Spiderman fans might think the name is that of an adult sex shop, however...

However, I ordered some graphic novels from them and was told to expect a call in  a week or two, after waiting 3 weeks I called and was told they were still on order.  Two weeks after that I stopped in to check on them and was, again, told they were on order.  It's now been two months and I expect they are still on "order".

I always try to give my local guy the first crack at my business, and since I live like two blocks away, when I've needed something comic book related, I've gone here first.

But then I started getting the feeling that these guys don't really care about your business because they don't say hi or even ask if you need  help finding something after you wander around the tiny store for 15 minutes with a dazed look on your face. I still can't figure out the layout of the place and they don't have any of the sections labelled. Its hard to find what you are looking for and its just not a very comfy place to browse.

I'm only just now getting back into comic books, but from back when I collected them as a kid, I fondly remember the aisles and aisles of back issues and fat geeky guys that would wax poetic for hours about Kitty Pryde, Jim Lee's newest comic or The Amazing Spiderman #46.

I'm sure they still exist, but Amazing Fantasy isn't it for me.

I often stop by here on my way home from work.

I don't usually buy anything, but in the past I've purchased several issues of Flaming Carrot, some American Splendors, and once special-ordered a Bizzaro Comix TPB, which fell apart shortly after I brought it home.

It seems like they have a pretty good selection, but I don't really go looking for anything too obscure.

As I was waiting for an old friend I hadn't seen in a year and a half to get in the neighborhood, I told her I'd be going to the comic book shop to look for some additional stuff for my sister's birthday... and of course, for myself. I went inside to see a black dog (labrador? I'm not a dog expert) chilling on the floor... I thought that was cool.

I asked the guy if there was any She-Hulk stuff (I call my sister She-Hulk when she gets angry) and he pointed me to the direction. He even found me a huge collection of She Hulk comics called "The Essential Savage She-Hulk Volume 1" which started from the beginning. I love those Essential volumes, since I had one for X-Men, so I bought it, hoping my sister would become even more of a geek than she all ready is.

I didn't get a chance to look around for some of the 'independent' comics that I had heard of and wanted to get into, and for me, there was so much stuff, I didn't know how to focus on one thing I liked, so I just got the third installment of Batman's "No Man's Land" series, which is one of my favorites, because it was really easy to find. I'm sure if I had time to look around and ask a couple of more questions, I would have bought a lot more stuff.

I had gone in here a couple of times over the years and always liked it in there. My trip this past Monday really made me want to come again. The man at the counter was VERY helpful and didn't come off at all like the stereotypical comic book guy... and believe me, I probably deserved getting snarked at for asking for She Hulk. The place might be small, but it's well organized and there's something for everyone.

    Updated:  Summer 2009.
I used to think this place was a cool spot.  I've spent some coin on a lot of figures from AF in the years past.

So, last summer, during the storm of The Dark Knight (around the 2nd week that TDK came out), I wanted to purchase a Heath Ledger Joker figure or statue and decided to check at Amazing Fantasy.

The exchange of information when I walked in went as follows:

Me: Hey, whats up man.  I'm just checking to see if you have any of the new Heath Joker statues from the new Batman movie?

    Worker:  Who?

Me:  Umm...the Joker from Dark Knight.  The Heath Ledger Joker statues?

    Worker:  OH, that Guy.  No.

Me:  Do you think you'll have any?

Worker:  You know, you'd have to talk to the manager about that.

Me:  Oh okay.  So, did you watch the movie?

Worker:  No, I don't watch those movies.

Me:  ....(left and never came back again.)

    end.

Hmmmm... I couldn't believe it.  THIS M'F WAS A COMIC BOOK SNOB!!  I used to think AF was a very cool spot.  I even wrote a positive review about them not being f'n SNOBS about comic books or comic book related things.  Boy, do I feel like a jerk!

SO.... if you want to FEEL LIKE A JERK, go to amazing fantasy for sarcastic, condescending talk from some worker who's a comic book snob!

If you DON'T want to feel like a jerk, DO NOT GO TO Amazing fantasy on Irving.

    You'll do yourself a favor!

    F! AF!

This is place is a nice spot.

For Figure Fans, the front end of the store is your spot.  They've got a cool little selection of things, but sometimes they don't have a lot of stuff.

For comics, if you like Superhero stuff, they AF is good to go.   Not a lot of Indie or Small press, but thats cool...  if you're into that, you already know where to go.  (Experience on Divis or Isotope)

Anyway, AF is a cool little spot...  check it out... you might get lucky, plus i the guys here are pretty cool with ordering items for people, which is a Major Plus!

They're not snobs, which is a cool.

Championship Records in "High Fidelity"? That's been my experience with Comic Book shops. The best ones are places where I go and hang out and shoot the breeze about Stuff as I browse for more back issues with featuring the Metal Men, Big Barda or the art of Adam Warren.

"Amazing Fantasy" is like that; I can go in and describe the books I'm interested in and the Sunday Dude Palla will not only pull my specific requests but add in titles that I might like to examine based on my stated tastes. Plus he is always playing a nifty audio track (this past Sunday was "Hitchhiker's Guide") and he keeps me up to speed on the latest doings for the Hubba Hubba Review.

The only reason I'm shorting the store a star is that their selection of adult comics is a little light.

I've been shopping here so long (12 years) I've almost taken for granted what a great shop this is. Clean, organized, well stocked and staffed by awesome folks.

Frank, the owner is a real old school Marvel fan. I've killed many an afternoon talking Spider-Man with him. Don't know the other peoples names but they're always really nice and helpful.

Amazing has a great stock of mainstream and hard to find Indy titles. More than once I've been shocked to find exactly what I was looking for.

Once you've got a stack of comics under your arm head over to the L'avenda Taqueria across the street and try their hot sauce. Sooo good.

Great selection, very well organized. The guy behind the counter is always friendly, and great at suggesting titles. Although, if I had a replica Thor helmet, I wouldn't put it up on display-- I would wear that helmet and parade around the store like it was my own little Asgard.

I really wanted to love this comic book store, it's so close to where I live, it's a comic book store, the service is friendly... but their selection is very... tiny when compared to Comic Experience or Isotope Comics, and it lacks the atmosphere of Comic Experience and Isotope Comics.

However, I do recommend this to any comic book guy/girl if you're into Marvel or DC, they have a pretty epic selection.  If you're into more of the indy stuff, Vertigo, Image, or Dark Horse, then I would go to Isotope or Comic Experience.

This is my neighborhood comic shop. It's not terribly big, but it still manages to have a great selection for its size.

The people that work there are all really friendly, and the place has a great atmosphere. They also tend to have some great stuff in the 50% off boxes.

I love this place.  I spend 20 minutes almost very week browsing and buying.  The people that work there are helpful and friendly.  They've even given me discounts and freebies.  The only thing I dislike is that some of racks are a little low and hard to reach.  But overall, I love this place.  This place has become my main comic shop.

Ive known Frank (the owner) for nearly 25 years. He's also been good to me and given me ( & other customers) discounts and orders things that will be of interest to you based on what you collect. He is very kind, helpful and relaxed. He's also great to talk to and his store looks really cool. Whether youre looking for a comic book, a toy, graphic novels, a Godzilla related item, trading cards, Randy Bowen statues he will do his best to find and order things. He even gives kids free comics
I cant recommend this place enough and have brought him a couple of new customers.
A great store to visit !  The prices are fair and sometimes he'd rather just make 'cost' than a profit. It is a real shame when a few of his customers have ordered things for him in the past and flaked when he had them. He is too nice of a guy for people to do that for him.
Getting there is easy, be it the N Judah line, the 44 bus - or if you drive, it is a matter of finding a place to park ..

I'm not a comic book person, but I've been in here multiple times with my nephews and Max.  They seem to like the store and its selection of back issues, though I find it rather boring.  The only comics I like are the Simpsons ones.  The staff here is laid back and doesn't bother you even when you're in the store for a really long time (at least it felt like a really long time).  They have some comic book inspired t-shirts and toys too, but not that many of them.  I've also gone to the Collector's Cave on Union St. - it has a wider variety of merchandise and more toys (but not as many comic books).  I find it much more interesting.
