Amavi has one of the best situated wineries in Walla Walla, on the South side and with a view of vineyards and wineries that extends into Oregon.  You should plan a trip here for the view alone.

The tasting room staff is cheerful, eager and knowledgable.  We really enjoyed the banter and we learned a good deal.

The wines that were poured for us were very young.  Now this may be because they just started pouring the 2009.  (We tasted the 2008 in the tasting room at Woodinville a few weeks back and enjoyed it.  It was more complex and drinkable.)

While we did buy a few bottles, we found the recommendation that we needed to cellar the wines for 7-9 years (the Cabs) to be a little challenging. How we gonna wait?

Such a beautiful spot and the syrah was phenomenal! I was in town on biz and my colleague bought a case of the 2009 to ship home. I didn't buy any bottles but I happened to go to a restaurant later this same eve and met the winemaker who also makes wine for Pepper Bridge just down the road from here- and has some more syrah! The only thing that was disappointing- I was thinking I would buy a souvenir or clothing item- something I could carry-on the plane home- as a Christmas gift, but the merchandise was so expensive here! And I live in the bay area! Walla Walla is in the middle of nowhere so I was surprised that everything cost so much compared to the merchandise at the wineries near our house in SF. Aside from that sticker shock, the wine was amazing and the winery itself was really pretty inside with lots of pics on the walls and a formal dining room at one end for tasting events, I presume. The view is fabulous and you can see forever form their deck though I stayed inside since it was late November and freezing with flurries out there. Overall it's a nice place and I would go again.

    What a gorgeous winery!

I brought a group of 20 people to wine taste in Walla Walla and coordinated with Patty, the owner, for my group to have lunch at her location.  She bent over backwards to accomodate our group and she did it with a smile!

Great wine, friendly staff and a beautiful location set the mood for a nice afternoon lunch out on her deck!

We came to this winery specifically after checking it out on the web as we passed through Walla Walla. We were glad we did. The tasting room is very clean and modern, and the beautiful view stretches far out to the distance. It was about 92 degrees when we visited. I love the heat so it was a perfect place to stop, taste some wine, enjoy the view, and relax. We ended up taking home a Semillon that we shared with some friends who also thought it a great wine. It is a little off the main track, but going to this area you will also have a chance to visit other wineries in the area that are close by.

Also, our wine aficionado was Ashley who was very friendly and knowledgeable and made our time there even better.

When I come back to Walla Walla I will be sure to stop here again.

Amavi is no longer located in town but off of Peppers Bridge Road.  The new tasting room(s) have a modern flare and has a breathtaking view of the valley.  They have a deck with patio chairs for you to enjoy the view while sipping wine.

I found the wines quite good and the tasting fees very reasonable (think they were $5), refundable with purchase of wine.  This is a definite winery to hit when visiting Walla Walla if not for the wine, then for the view.  The prices have gone up since Travis' visit, but it's expected with a winery that gets accolades for the prices to get a bit higher.

Another great winery in Walla Walla.  Nicely located within walking distance to Canoe Ridge and Whitman Cellars.  I'd suggest hitting all three: great wines with different styles. This is a nice little corner of the Walla Walla wine district.

Wow, what an amazing beyond the bottle experience I had visiting the Amavi Cellars winery, which is located in an industrialized area west of downtown Walla Walla.

The name, Amavi, is derived from the Latin words, amor (love), vita (life), and vinum (wine). Their mission is "to capture the best of love and life in every bottle" of wine. It's clear this mission extends to the winery experience. Whatever the Amavi Cellars winery lacks in terms of its setting, they more than make up for it in providing a great experience inside their tasting room. In fact, they lived up to their promise of providing a "relaxed, Old-West atmosphere as you sample our wines."

I was really impressed by the generous reception I received when entering the winery. The first person to approach me was Travis, who is the regional sales manager at Amavi. This was actually her day off, with Travis standing at the bar hosting a friend to a sampling of their wine. The fact that she took time away from her friend to strike up a conversation was impressive. We ended up chatting at length about how Amavi got started, the people behind the wine, and the unique characteristics of each bottle.

Travis also shared a great story about the 1890's cabin that was moved from their family property in Montana to construct the tasting room. Along with the Old West memorabilia hanging on the walls, those century-old cabin timbers make for quite an interesting tasting room. Overall, Travis' storytelling about their winery offered a great way to connect to their wines beyond the bottle.

Complementing Travis' hospitality was Patty, the tasting room manager for Amavi. Patty did a fantastic job explaining the terroir of each of the six wines available for sampling (a semillion, a cab franc rose, two syrahs, a cab, and an ice wine). Amavi charges $5 for tastings, but this fee is refundable with any wine purchase.

Even after more folks arrived, Patty continued to go beyond the bottle in providing a memorable experience. With each glass poured, she shared some great stories about the wine that went beyond the detailed tasting notes in front of me. I also liked the fact that Patty pointed out on their VinMap where the vineyards were located in the Walla Walla Valley.

Best of all, Patty let the wines speak for themselves. No bragging about ratings or reviews - just a focus on the people and places behind the wines I was sampling.

Another positive aspect of Amavi Cellars is their focus on producing wine from estate vineyards. If you're looking for a Walla Walla winery that produces wines from grapes grown in the same valley, then this is your place. Although I normally don't include tasting notes in winery reviews, I must commend Amavi on producing wines that are not your usual high alcohol fruit bombs frequently encountered around Washington. I also like the fact that they are reasonably priced, with bottles ranging from $18 to $25.

I highly recommend Amavi Winery on your next visit to Walla Walla. They very much exceeded expectations in terms of providing an experience that went beyond the bottle. The stories about their founding, fruit, facility, and family all helped connect me to Amavi in ways I would have never imagined. Delicious wines, passionate people, and great stories made for a exceptional experience.

Pricey tasting room and pricey wines.  Not sure they're worth it.
