Review from Robert F.
Amato's Auto Body is the best place in San Diego to take your vehicle for body repair. The level of quality here is outstanding, and the service is impeccable. Over many years I have had various unfortunate car accidents, most of which were not my fault. And this is always where I will come to get things back to original condition.
The place is family run, with Paul (the owner) being very active in making sure you get your car fixed like it was never hit. I have done full panels, touch up paints, buffing, bumpers, and more and have always been happy. They are fair and they dont recommend fixing more than you need when it is coming out of your own pocket. They even washed and waxed my vehicle, making it look better than when I came in. They have also been helpful in recommending other places that do what they dont here, such as tinting.
I also know multiple people who use their detailing services on their very high end car collections and that is a testament that this is where you come when you want the job done right. -

I selected "Amato's" because they are certified by Audi to handle body and paint for my car. Audi certified repair shops must maintain strict quality and customer service standards to keep the certification.
I was not disappointed. From the moment I phoned "Terry", the Amato's customer service coordinator, My case was handled prefessionally and promptly, with regular updates. My rental car was coordinated as well with no waiting and easy pick-up and drop off.
My car was repaired to "good as new" status, including an annoying, problematic rattle under the car that was caused by the rear-end collision.
Paul Amato took the time to explain some of the technology used to locate these problems, which can be more bothersome than some of the exterior damage.
My experience was extremely professional and pleasant. Insurance issues were handled by Terry, so I did not have to deal with them.
If you have a high-end vehicle, I would highly recommend "Amato's". -

here we go again! i received a very apologetic response to PREVIOUS review from paul amato the owner. ok, no harm, no hard feelings.
here comes the big but, recently my son experienced a transmission issue and took his m3 to bmw to address it. at that time he also let them know that he hears air and noticed flapping noises. they said the windshield was installed improperly and had to replace the molding and charged me $350.00. when i called amoto's to be reimbursed they said no! we outsourced the windshield installation and you should have brought it to us to give us a chance to fix it. ok, i understand that is normal protocol. paul the owner said to let him know if he could do anything for my son or i and now won't even return my calls.
done!

Great communication during the process of getting my car repaired after an accident. I was kept up on the progress of the repairs and approvals of my insurance agent. The car was returned in great shape yesterday. Would have given 5 stars but car was down for 6 six weeks for various reasons . . . Mostly insurance issues.

Amatos did a decent job at getting my truck fixed after an accident. It took the about 6 business days to get it back up to par. The damage was light but they were able to get it done and they called me a couple of times to give me an update.
I rode in the row truck over there and they gave me a ride home after the paperwork was done, back down to San Diego.
The girl at the front was pretty nice too. -

I went to Amato's per a recommendation from the dealer and confirmed that they would guarantee the work they do for the life of the vehicle. They repaired the vehicle cosmetically just fine, but I HAD TO TAKE MY CAR BACK THREE TIMES for a mechanical problem they hadn't fixed right the first time! And to boot, TO GET IT RIGHT, THEY CHARGED ME THE THIRD TIME I BROUGHT IT BACK TO FINALLY FIX WHAT THEY SHOULD HAVE FIXED OR REPLACED THE FIRST TIME!!!! No bueno Amato's...

Our Jaguar convertible was hit and run TWICE! We used Amato's both times. They were courteous, efficient and the car looks like new. The second time we were hit, I actually felt relaxed about it all. "We'll just go to Amato's." They are not the cheapest as another reviewer mentioned, but I don't have a cheap car. If you want quality and detail, it is worth it.

I took my Audi there after being rear-ended. The place is awesome. Quality work and professional. Known to be the best in San Diego, they usually have Ferrari's , BMW's and Porsche's out front. Very pricey but they do quality work.

I really liked this place! I went here in Nov. 2007-- right around Thanksgiving. They got me in very quickly, whenever I wanted. The staff was super nice to me, they didn't seem snooty at all. I loved my experience. My car was done before they anticipated, they washed it and gave me orchids when I picked it up. What could I not like?! Luckily I was not at fault and someone was paying out of pocket-- they seemed pricey, but it was quick, easy, friendly with great service and a great end result!

Amato's always used to be a highly regarded shop amongst my fellow automotive enthusiasts. I'd heard from several people speak of the quality as second to none, the work was done quickly, and they were courteous. Most people I'd spoken to had experiences back in the 90's, but I figured hey, would it be any different now?
So when I got into a fender bender, I knew where I wanted to take my car. The morning after, I had the car towed in for an estimate. The lady on the phone was very nice and said she could fit me in immediately. Upon arrival, I spoke to the shop manager, who gave me a quick walk through and assured me an estimate would be prepared no later than the afternoon.
That's when the waiting game started. I waited all afternoon, got nothing. Figured they were busy, so I gave them the benefit of the doubt. Called them the next morning (Friday). Was told my call would be returned. I finally received a quote Friday afternoon, just late enough for no action to be taken. Oh well, I would mull it over the weekend and give them an answer on Monday.
Monday comes and I head over, sign the work authorization, and away we go! I'm assured by both the shop manager and office person that the parts would be in stock locally and that the whole job should take no more than 10 days.
2 days pass. "Hey, sorry, had a misquote on a part price, price went up 500 bucks." no biggie I say. Let's get it done.
10 days pass. I call. "Oh hey, parts aren't in. haven't even started."
2 weeks later, another misquote, price goes up again.
4 weeks later, "we didn't add this bit of labor, price goes up again. So sorry, would you like a rental?"
5 weeks to the day after I sign the work authorization, I get a call that my car is done. I'm excited to say the least.
I arrive and find right away that my car has significantly more miles than when I left it. I understand that they have to drive the car for a shakedown, but nearly 40 miles were driven. Also the hood is not properly aligned, and one of the turn signal lights was replaced, and does not match.
Whatever, I figure they can fix it, right?
Well I go inside, am greeted by the office staff, and go over paperwork. I ask if I could have the key to take the car for a quick drive before I sign the papers. No problem.
So I get the key and head out. No sooner do I sit in my car when a short man feverishly runs after me and asks what I am doing. I explain that I would like to test drive my car before I accept it. He at first says this isn't possible then sends a porter with me so I don't leave with my car without paying. Ok.
Upon returning from the short drive, I go back into the office. I'm not offered a discount, apology, thank you card, candy bar, etc. look, I'm realistic, and I'm not looking for a handout. And I know that on a rare car, it might take longer for parts to show up. But I was assured by TWO people that this would be a quick and easy job. I decided not to get a rental since it would only take 10 days max. Never mind all the business I lost since I was car less for 5 weeks.
Bottom line; take care of your customers. A good review would have netted Mr. Amato dozens of other customers; bad reviews spread through the car community like wildfire. I understand things happen, but communication was horrible, and I was treated like a substandard customer.
And to top it off, I had the car in with my regular mechanic today for an oil change and to fix all of their screw ups. The techs at Amato's had removed the power steering pump assembly and had only partially tightened one of the bolts. my mechanic reported that all three bolts were loose, and that a 6" lag bolt was hanging out of the bracket with less than 1" holding it in. the bolt was near backing out and could have caused the entire accessory drive to fall apart, causing an engine failure. My mechanic documented the issue and I will be contacting the BBB to make sure consumers are aware of the quality of their work.
Next time i'll take mine to west coast specialties. -

DO NOT GO TO AMATO's unless you want to be treated like they are doing you a favor. I took my brand new BMW in for some work on a bumper. When I picked my car up, the work was HORRIBLE! You could see bubbles in the paint and they had missed an entire part of the bumper they were supposed to repair and paint. It was extremely difficult to get them to take my car back to fix the work they had already done. I ended up having to contact the owner to try and get my car repaired properly. The second time the car was repaired, the work was still not completed properly and I had to ask the owner to come and inspect it with me. He did not apologize, but just told me that I would have to come back later to pick it up. Additionally, one of the women who works at the front desk was extremely rude and made inappropriate jokes about people who didn't pay for their work - insinuating that I was trying to get the work done for free -- no, I just want the work done RIGHT! Eventually I got my car back, but I would NEVER NEVER go there again. I have told all my friends not to use them and they have already lost several customers due to their EXTREMELY POOR CUSTOMER SERVICE AND QUALITY OF WORK.
