While it is only about three blocks from a rival Thai restaurant I frequent, I still find myself in Amarit fairly often. This is because they are usually less crowded, they have a bathroom that does not require you to ask for a key, and they have lickety-split carryout service.
The menu is missing one or two dishes I often enjoy elsewhere, but it's still big enough that if you come with a group, people with different preferences should have plenty to choose from. I haven't had a bad meal here, and the service is always prompt. At the same time, I often come here with a book and take my time eating, and I've never been rushed out or hurried. I also like that they include the greens in the Pad Si Ew. Without the greens, this dish is often too sweet for me, although it's one of my favorites.
The only thing I really don't like? They play an awful satellite radio station, and it's a bit loud. Imagine every corny love song written in the past 30 years blaring at you as you eat. They also don't have lunch specials, although since they're happy to wrap leftovers and do it fast, this isn't a major issue.
In short, if you walk into one of the other local Thai eateries and are dismayed to find a wait, try Amarit. They probably have an open table waiting for you. -

I'm completely baffled that this place has anything over 2 stars. Really.
Got delivery, and everything we ordered (crab rangoon, spring rolls, pad prik) was completely flavorless. Completely. Let's be real, we are talking pad prik: one of the boldest, spiciest dishes in Thai cooking and yeah... what they delivered was watery chicken that smelled like feet. My boyfriend took it upon himself to mix the whole thing with soy sauce and sriracha just to make it edible. You aren't supposed to have to completely re-season food you get from a restaurant. And know what? It still sucked. Agree with Ashley M. that for all we know, that food had been sitting there for who knows how long because that is definitely what it tasted like.
The rangoon, my favorite part of any Chinese/Thai takeout, tasted rancid. The best tasting thing we received would have to be a can of Diet Coke, and we could probably all agree that that is saying something.
The pricing wasn't expensive, but as someone on a currently limited budget I'm unbelieveably pissed that I had to spend money on what was some of the worst food I've ever been served in my life. -

I was excited to have a Thai place near my new apartment, but after having dinner there, I won't be going back.
The place is always pretty empty when I walk by, even on the weekends, so I wasn't surprised that on a Tuesday night my boyfriend and I were one of four tables.
We had one of the curries and a noodle dish and each were just sub-par. We have had our fair share of Thai food and this just wasn't good. The food wasn't very warm and tasted as if it had been sitting out for awhile and not prepared to order.
Too bad this place wasn't a winner. -

I love love love Thai food and Amarit! It has been my number 1 place to go since 2003. I loved it when it was on Delaware and it is even better in its newer location in Printers Row. All noodle dishes are great as is the Spicy Basil Leaves and Yellow Curry. But by far the one thing that sets Amarit apart from others is the Spicy Beef appetizer sooo delicious and have yet to find it anywhere else! Also the veggie egg rolls are always ALWAYS fresh and scrumptious. Best yet, the waitress I love is always there and we don't even need to order! She remembers us. Every time. Please go here! I wouldn't stray you wrong!

Here's the deal. The staff is friendly, the food is relatively inexpensive, but the flavors are hit or miss. I ordered pad thai, which did not have very much flavor and was kind of dry. My friend ordered spicy crazy noodles, which were very good. A bit too unpredictable for my taste.

Bomb ass pad Thai! And the crab Rangoon was the best I've ever had. Not greasy at all.
They have a little of everything that you'd find delicious in Asian cuisine. Alcohol selection is weak sauce, but I didn't care once I got my appetizer and meal.
I'll return next time I pass through Chicago. -

My favorite thai dish is Pad Keo Mao (probably spelled it wrong) and I would definitely come back here to get it again. It was a little spicy but not too spicy. I love spicy food so I had to add a little bit of chilli in it. I tried some of my friend's pad thai which was good. She asked for extra spicy so there was a little kick to it. The Tom Yum Soup was pretty good as well. The service was a little slow but the servers were really nice. This place is BYOB which I think is amazing. California needs to get on this BYOB deal. :) Each person paid around 10+ something for their dish which is pretty affordable for Thai food.

Ooh, I loves me some Amarit. Friendly, quick lunch service and they are always open to modifying dishes. For me this basically means taking out the one thing from a dish that makes it healthy - which in this case would be the broccoli part of my beef pad see eiw. Then again, maybe if I started eating some broccoli every so often my ass might stop making beeping noises every time I back up. Anyways, if you're looking for a nice sit down place with tons of room, comfy booths, and a quick cheap lunch - think under $10 with tax and tip, then this is it.
As a side note, they have $6 martinis, but I cannot comment on these since I am a good little worker bee and refuse to partake in alcohol consumption during lunch, umm, yeah :( -

Nice and clean place! The food is good. I like it more, tahn My Thai. Tom Kha Kai soup is my favorite!
And once I went there with three of my friends to celebrate a birthday. Can you believe that our check was only 50 bucks? Not a penny more! And we were eating appetizers and dishes - each of us!
They also send coupons by mail, so if you live around Down Town and receive those coupons, you can get a free appetizer or 10 dollar off your bill!
Guys, you do a great job!!! -

Amarit worked well for a quick lunch in the South Loop (as we both had to be back at work within an hour). I was surprised at the size of the restaurant after walking in the door. It seemed clean and pleasantly-decorated, and there was natural sunlight coming in from the large east-facing windows.
I always try pad khee mao as my first dish at a new Thai restaurant. When I said "no chicken, no prawn", the server immediately asked if I wanted tofu. Of course! As usual, I forgot to ask about the presence of fish sauce; I'm such a lazy vegan sometimes... The vegetables were fresh and crisp, and there were a lot of large jalapeño pieces. I love spicy food, so this was alright by me, but others may want to set them aside. The tofu was cooked to chewy perfection.
I didn't try the bubble tea or anything else, but based on my one dish it was a satisfying option for standard Thai food.Listed in: Vegan Adventures on GrubHub

I got take out from here for lunch. I was quite surprised at the Mongolian Beef. It's "different". It's more like stir-fry beef with veggies and a light sprinkle of crunchy noodles. The beef is over cooked and chewy. There's a light watery sauce with it too. I have never ever seen Mongolian Beef done this way before. I don't like it.
The chicken Tom Yum soup was really blah without personality right out of the container. You have to add the red chili lime sauce (included in my order) to the soup to make it more sour and spicy. With the sauce added, the soup is actually tasty.
Another odd thing. I had to order rice separately from the entrée. What's up with that?
I wish I could rate this place more than 2, but "meh. I've experienced better." -

I saw this place didn't have a great rating, so I wanted to put my 2 cents in. I go there on a weekly basis, and i've never had a bad experience. I will admit i'm not very adventurous when it comes to thai food (i love pad thai), but I think their pad thai, cucumber salad, red bean ice cream are all very good. They get you in and out really fast. The best part is that I can only eat half the portion, and have another meal for later.

So it's Christmas, and true to form my husband and I celebrated quietly at home with Thai food. Our first date was Christmas Night at a Thai Restaurant. So we kinda keep to it.
I've eaten here before in house and was never disappointed with any of their noodle dishes. Decided to stick to what I knew.
Pad Woon Seen. Tons of it. Stocked with lots of fresh veggies and lots of Chicken. The noodles got a little sticky while in the package waiting to get here. But I knew if I had been in house it would be perfect. As it was. it was very good.
Total Bust on the Papaya Salad. Something was very off and we thew it away. We think the papaya was getting old.
Honey had the Basil Chicken and was pleased with the texture and heat. He's Thai and while this isn't the best Thai in the city, it's still good. And really...delivery on Christmas? LOL -

I thought this place was great! Granted, I haven't been to any other thai places in Chicago to compare it to, but I thought it was yummy.
I ordered the thai iced coffee which was delicious and just sweet enough, plus the tofu spring rolls w/ peanut sauce--the best!! I live for thai peanut sauce. We also ordered the chicken and beef satay which was perfectly cooked (and yum dipped in the peanut sauce)...
For my main meal, I ordered the tofu pad thai-it was good, but not as good as it could have been...a little too sweet. My husband had a beef/thick noodle dish which was good and very flavorful.
All in all-4 stars. I thought it was great, but pad thai could have been a bit better. Plus---we went here on a Friday night and there was ample seating--a major plus if you want to just eat and go or are starving and can't wait for a table. -
Review from Joshua M.
One star for absolutely piss-poor service. This restaurant has a delivery radius that is WAY too big. I ordered on grubhub... I'm in Wicker Park, and this restaurant is in the south loop. I didn't pay attention to the address, and I rarely do. I was just assured they deliver here, and that was good enough. I wanted to try a new place. They made me a 50-minute delivery promise and showed up 2 hours later with cold crappy food and an even worse attitude.
After they were 15 minutes late, I called and was assured that my food had been on its way for at least 15 minutes. She told me he was "almost here." He shows up 45 minutes later.
Their food might have been good before it sat in a car for an hour. But I'll never know. They need to shorten their delivery radius. Seriously, how are you going to claim you deliver to an area if you're an hour late? I'd rather they not deliver to me than deliver food that un-fresh. -

Went here for lunch with coworkers earlier this week, and I was very pleasantly surprised! The room is cute and well-decorated. Service was a bit slow, but we weren't in a rush and it sort of looked like they were training a new server anyway....
I got the mango bubble tea, which was fantastic. It was so fresh, and brightly colored like the fruit of which it is made! I hate chalky, fake tasting bubble tea. This one was like a perfect mango smoothie. I have no idea if that is more or less authentic, but I do prefer the yummy taste!
We split the pot stickers and tempura appetizer, all of which were pretty standard. Portions were good for the price. Then I had the Singapore noodles, which was pretty darn good! The flavor had that fresh, authentic quality, and the seafood was well-cooked (which is hard to do for a little Thai place). The portion was big - the rest of it ended up being my dinner the next night, and it was still delicious.
Too bad my work in the South Loop is over, if not, I'd definitely be back! -

Never crowded, I go in for dinner, have a pleasant time, and the food and atmosphere are pretty good.
The fish cakes are a bit rubbery, but the shrimp cake appetizer is heavenly. I have no had a bad entree here. I recommend the spareribs; so tasty. -

This is a city with a Thai place on every other block and you can do better. This particular Thai place was merely okay.
Don't get me wrong, there is nothing inherently wrong with the place. The ambiance was good, the ingredients were fresh, and the service was fine. I guess the food was just bland, even after asking for spicy dishes. Thai food should not be bland. -

NOPE...there are plenty of delicious thai restaurants, I probably wouldn't waste my time going here again.
Everything was just kind of ok. The chicken with vegetables was pretty good. The beef and broccoli was not very tasty, and the meat was very fatty. Even the steamed rice was mediocre...and how do you mess up steamed rice?
The crab rangoon was terrible, there was something other than cream cheese inside those suckers and I don't want to know what it was. I did like that they included 3 different sauces for the potstickers and the crab rangoon, but if what you're dipping them in isn't good, what is the point? There isn't one, so don't waste your time here. -
Review from Penny S.
No Panang? But... Panang is my litmus! And it's a staple! What do I do? Crap. Well fine then, I guess I'll go the complete other way and get a green curry beef. Pretty tasty and hot - creeper hot. Keep a chilly beer nearby to put out the yummy flames.
The pot stickers were fried and not steamed so they were more like crab rangoon with pot sticker filling. The summer rolls were light and good. The pot sticker sauce was better than the summer roll sauce, little tip.
My dinning companion's orange chicken had a light sauce which was tasty, but the chicken had so much batter on it that the batter was most of what we tasted.
The prices are average for Thai joints and they have a decent selection of beers. It's quiet in there but the service is nice and fast. Good for take out as well.Listed in: South Loop/Printer's Row

My experience here was well... rather bizarre.
First, let me clarify. All stars for the food. The chicken pad thai was exelllaaaaannnte. Deliche.
The service... a bit too personal?
I lunched on a Wednesday afternoon with my friend and her 1 year old son. At first the waitress denied us a high chair and insisted we just pull the stroller up to the table. Ummm.. baby would have been like a foot below the table. We finally convince her that the high chair is essential. (Mind you... the place was not busy, there was plenty of room to navigate around the little guy.)
Then... mid lunch she proceeds to grab a napkin and wipe baby's face. Uhhh? WHAT?! No word to the mother. Just walked by and wiped his face. Strange indeed.
Okay... here's the kicker. After we are done eating, she comes over to make conversation with baby. Stands behind him, holds his little hands... then KISSES HIM ON THE CHEEK! Whoa there. Crossing the line for sure.
Great food. Waitresses should probably be told to not have physical contact with patrons' children. Creepy for sure. -

Love love love love love this place! My husband and I have since started venturing out to find more places in our own neighborhood, but we have gone there so often that the waitress not only recognizes us, she knows already knows what we are going to order!
The portions are huge which usually allows for us to just share a plate--making it an even more inexpensive outing! The food is absolutely delicious and the service is very very quick! You order, blink, and your food is practically on the table already! -

Man, there are a lot of haters of this place...I don't get it! I work downtown, and our options for thai are this or My Thai. This is like going to heaven compared to My Thai! Servings are bigger and cheaper (before 3pm, they charge you less for the same amount of food as dinnertime), they let you order online (always a plus because there's pretty much no way they can screw up your order), the restaurant is very clean, and there are lots of choices on the menu.
I think there's a reason people are not as big a fan as me. They are looking at this as a Thai restaurant when in reality, although most dishes are Thai, it is "Thai and Pan-Asian". I suppose when I think "Pan-Asian" I don't think authentic, and therefore I don't expect as much. If the food is tasty, hot, consistent, and the service is good, I am happy. Thats why I am happy with Amarit.
Get the Pad Woon Sen. It is very good. Very light flavor, so if you like spicy order it spicy. Next time I want to try the Pad Thai, and after reading these other reviews I will be sure to order it "as spicy as you can make it".Listed in: My favorite places to eat…, 60605/60616

I have visited Amarit a handful of times due to it's proximity to my place and it's pretty consistently decent. I can't say I've ever had a bad meal from Amarit but I also can't say I've ever had a great one.
Honestly nothing really else to call out here, if it's convenient you shouldn't be disappointed but don't go looking for a new favorite Thai in Chicago. In my opinion Singha and definitely Siam Rice (only open till 8) are definitely better choices. -

The curry fried rice at Amarit is excellent paired with the spicy basil entree. The tofu is thoroughly cooked and can be substituted for most meat dishes.
The atmosphere is quiet and smoke-free and the waitstaff is very attentive.
*UPDATE* This location has closed. Luckily, they are re-opening in the South Loop ~ 600 S Dearborn in a few months. -

Recently a group of co-workers and I ordered in lunch from Amarit. Boy was I disappointed.
For 4 of us is was nearly $50 and it was some of the worst Thai food I've ever had. I ordered the cashew chicken and it was cold when it arrived, watery, bland and had more straw mushrooms than chicken! My co-workers ordered the Crab Rangoon, which were good but not hardly any crab to speak of, the fried spicy basil leaves which were not really spicy , the curry chicken which was probably the best dish we ordered, and the fried rice which my co-worker said was "meh".
One of the most unusual things about Amarit was that none of the dishes come with rice?! We ended up being charged for two sides or rice, and only getting one for the 3 dishes that usually COME WITH rice!!!
The prices are not for "small" and "large" but rather for "weekdays 11a-3p" and "after 3pm weekends and holidays". Even so, the cashew chicken was 6.25 plus rice makes it 7.25 and that is for a "weekday 11a-3p" size!
Bland, Overpriced, and Unimpressive. -

Mmmm!! Amarit has the best duck curry in the world!! And I didn't even know I liked duck curry!
Everything else (the unagi, tom yum soup, shrimp dumplings) we've had falls in the "average to a little above average" category. But the prices are "reasonable to cheap", and the restaurant has a nice ambience, so I'll be going back.
*Warning: Don't order the pad prik, unless you like bland, greasy noodles. -

funny enough, Amarit is my most visited restaurant since I moved to Chicago. I have never ordered delivery, however all my experiences of eating in at Amarit have been nothing short of satisfactory. the appetizers are great and I recommend the
Pad See Ew
although it doesn't sound too appetizing, Pad See Ew's is a wide-noodle unlike Pad Thai (much thinner) and it comes with either chicken or beef (both a good choice, if I had to choose one i'd say go with beef)
I love the service at Amarit and definitely suggest it for any middle-of-the-line Thai fan.
PS I think the waitress thinks I have a crush on her (since I go there so often) and sometimes her and the other man working there joke about me in their native language. Honestly, I don't, I just genuinely enjoy the food and the service.
PPS make sure to get the Shrimp Egg Rolls! -

Boooooo! Bland, bland, bland.
Mongolian Beef - dry, chewy beef, watery sauce, and a few pieces of crunchy noodles ... eh
Orange Chicken - a bit dry, a bit more flavor ... decent
Sweet 'n' Sour Shrimp - five pieces of undercooked cocktail shrimp and whole bunch of sweet 'n' sour sauce ... sad
This was a huge disappointment for the $30 we spent. I should also note we ordered crab ragoon, and the pot stickers came free with a coupon. And...rice costs extra. That's fine by me since I have a rice cooker, which was probably the best part of the meal. You guessed it ... I will not order from here again. -

I wanted curry shrimp and a restaurant close to home so we gave Amarit a try. I think this is the third Thai restaurant to inhabit the space and it's all the same.Although Amarit looks nicer, the food is just as forgetable. We had chicken satay, pineapple shrimp curry, and pad thai. The chicken satay was good. Anything dipped in sweet, creamy, peanut sauce is good though... The curry was watery and lacking.substance, just a few sad pieces of shrimp and pineapple. The pad thai was a tad bit sweeter than I'm used to and I usually get a wedge of lime instead of lemon, which I think does make a difference...
I continue on my search for a decent Thai place close to my house. -

It's always empty. But I think I like that. The scarce crowd does not speak for the quality of the food. The mussamun curry is fantastic! I'll make the trip just for that. Crab rangoons are good, but aren't crab rangoons always good, by definition?
The staff is friendly and attentive...mainly because there isn't anyone else in the restaurant. But, whatever. They're attentive, and I like it. -

Great for a group! I came with about 15 people and they were totally accommodating. It helped that we went there at like 8 pm and the place was basically empty but they were still really friendly about it.
Food was really really good! I don't know about the last post cause I definitely had the Panang curry. IT WAS DELICIOUS! We all had a family style sharing of our dishes and they had some great noodle dishes also.
They lose their one star for the price of their dishes. It seems far overpriced even for how good the dishes were. If your not concerned with the prices (8-12/dish), then give it a try. I will definitely be returning sometime soon!Listed in: My Neighborhood

Don't get the Pad Thai. Amarit does not do this standard dish well at all. I've gotten the Pad Woon Sen and was satisfied, so I don't think the place is terrible. But really, a Thai restaurant should be able to serve up a great Pad Thai with its eyes closed.
The better Thai option in the neighborhood is Tamarind.
Recent edit: I got the Singapore Noodles yesterday for lunch and was unimpressed, as it was way too greasy for my taste. Downgrading this place to a 2. -

I eat here somewhat often, as I live really close and it's convenient. I don't think it's great food, or a great price, but I do find it consistent. I like the Rama Chicken, Pad Thai, Pad See Ew, and largely stick to these dishes as I don't like the rest of the menu nearly as much. (also, they are simple dishes, and fairly difficult to screw up). The food is fresh and has clean flavors (the elements of the pad thai, like lemon, nuts, sprouts, and so on are crisply distinct), but I find it a bit more sterile than the Thai places I really like, such as Opart and Spoon on Western.
Roughly equal to Tamarind in quality. -
Review from Josh V.
Amarit is pretty much A-OK. The food is adequate, and the space itself is relatively nice, and clean. It doesn't seem to get very busy here, so you should have no trouble getting a table.
The drinks here are cheap... $6 martinis. I tried two varieties, and they were both OK. Beers are $3 or $4.
The service was pretty quick, but at one point we had to flag someone down to order more drinks. At least they kept my water glass full.
Entrees don't include rice, so if you want some (and you probably will--the portions are a decent size but not huge) it costs extra. At least they offer brown rice as an option (for $1 more). I didn't try any noodle dishes, but my friend didn't like the tofu in his.
I'd go here again if I was in the area, particularly since there isn't a lot going on around there. But I wouldn't go out of my way to get there. -

I love Thai food. In one word, delicious.
And this place was no exception. I was vacationing in Chicago (from Boston) and a friend recommended Amarit for a yummy Thai lunch. I ordered the catfish, which was splendidly crunchy and delicious. A little too spicy though (as to drown out all other flavors). My friends' meals, though, were rather lacking...
The real disappointment was the service. It started okay enough, with immediate seating. But it started going downhill; our waitress was unfriendly and frigid; refusing to get my friend another drink when she brought the wrong one. She even decided to argue him about it! -

The tofu pad thai was awful. No spices, at all. Since I asked for it to be vegan- no eggs, no fish sauce- I feel like the cook didn't do anything to spice it. Some of the noodles/tofu were still white as if they hadn't been cooked at all. And it tasted strangely vinegar-y.
The fried tofu's dipping sauce had no flavor.
The pad ki mao was the saving grace. Pretty good! Not the best, but far from the worst I've had. The delivery guy was very nice, especially after a mix up on my end (wrong number). -

Ick!! I've given this place two chances and both times have been disappointments. Now, I've given up. I had high hopes when the previous restaurant closed and this one opened. I was hoping that some great Thai restaurant would be coming to the area, but no. This isn't the place.

I don't really care much for authenticity or even fanciness when it comes to delivery thai food- I've eaten a few times in the restaurant and it's nice enough, but nothing special.
I LOVE ordering from them, though. I always order pretty much the same thing: Chicken Pad Thai and Crab Rangoon. The amount of pad thai you get is ridiculous(ly awesome) and the crab rangoon is to die for, even if they don't have that much crab in them.
Best tasting pad thai and crab rangoon I've had in any Thai restaurant in Chicago, not to mention I can get all of that for about $12-14, which is extremely reasonable. LOVE IT.
I give it only 4 stars because as I mentioned- it's not exactly fancy or unique. Just tasty. Consider this a 4.5 star rating!
