Review from Brian S.
Atco, NJ
My wife and I absolutely loved this winery. It's a very small vineyard nestled on some old farmland. Inside the farmhouse is the tasting/sales. The host was very knowledgeable about their styles and grape varieties. Inside you'll find a small array of older tools and wine making materials. It had a very warm, homey ambiance.
The farm cat was also friendly and made us feel at home. -

I visited Amalthea for my second time this past weekend. I do appreciate this winery: it's very quaint and quietly nestled in the middle of nowhere - or so it feels.
The tasting cellars date back a century or so, and the greeters / pourers are all very friendly (it helps to be from the Mid-West!). They had free tastings (some charge for the "complimentary" glass) - and also a plethora of cheese and crackers!
Of course, you feel the obligation to buy a bottle in the end, but I didn't mind. Amongst all of the NJ wineries I've been to - this one doesn't particularly stand out as one of my top favorites - but I do like Amalthea and I'd definitely return if I'm in the area again.Listed in: Culture Vultures

Review from Alex S.
Piscataway Township, NJ
Excellent winery, in a bucolic setting. Tucked away from the main road, it may require a good map or GPS, but well worth the hunt. Wines are delicious, and tastings are often free. They do reds the best, especially their Europa series (a take on classic European blends).

Specialties
Offering world class wines, you can't afford to miss this stop on the wine trail. Consulting for the prestigious Chateau Margaux, one of only five "First Growth" chateaus in Bordeaux, Louis Caracciolo has crafted wines that have rivaled the best in the world. Complimentary tastings are held Fridays, Saturdays & Sundays from 11:00am-5:00pm. We are located in Southern New Jersey in the beautifully wooded Atco NJ just off of Exit 4 on the Turnpike.
History
Established in 1982
In 1976, the first vineyards were planted at Amalthea Cellars. Founder Louis Caracciolo's infatuation with winemaking began as a young boy making wine in the cellar of his Italian immigrant grandfather. Emilio brought the art from "The Old Country" at the age of thirteen to the southern New Jersey town of Blue Anchor at the turn of the century. Being exposed to the charm of winemaking at an early age ignited a passion that continues to this day at Amalthea Cellars. Caracciolo often says of his philosophical grandfather, "I came on the scene with an unlit torch and my grandfather passed the flame."
