When you think of scary, what do YOU think of?
When I think of scary, I think of Amagi Sushi with a "C" rating from the health department on their window.
NO sushi establishment should EVER have a "C" on their door. EVER!
I used to eat here all the time, but then the rating appeared and I haven't been back since.Listed in: The Best and Worst of Asian…

So first off i have to give mad props it is funny the emblem on the door of this place is a tattoo of mine...we all thought that was so funny when we first stopped here.
So driving down Sunset and we got hungry we seen Amagi and stopped..One side is a bar area and the other a dance floor stage and sushi bar. The food was pretty good they serve both Thai and Japanese food here so that was a win...2 of us wanted Japanese and two wanted Thai so it really worked out. AND it is cheap...we got a ton of food and sushi for barely anything SCORE!!!
They now only serve dinner...so don't try to stop for lunch!!!Listed in: Sheila's Sushi Guide

I figure i have time for one review before i go to work... and maybe it's 3 1/2, not 4 stars....
so maybe i love this place because it's in a shopping center called Gower Gultch. or maybe it's the drunk white trash ladies singing karaoke next door. or maybe it's just simply the food. i dunno.
some of the best miso i've ever had in Los Angeles, and they have lots of rolls to choose from. though they'd get 1/2 star off here because they don't tell you what all the awkwardly named rolls are. but still. it's kinda good for people who don't like sushi because they also have thai food.
after an outting with my ladies from work we were starving and so we wanted sushi. we ended up here after a lot of discussion and i was glad we did. amagi is standardly priced sushi with some amazing rolls. the fish was fresh and i loved the spicy tuna because you know how when it gets old, it REALLY tastes like TUNA? well not here! it was fresh and flavorful and REALLY SPICY!. hahaha i guess that why they call it spicy tuna huh?
all in all this place is fun, and if you eat where it's quiet, it's a great atmosphere. and then you can get all drunk and go next door and sing "some white trash version of shania karaoke".... oh carrie underwood, how i loathe you for coming up with such catchy song lyrics....Listed in: best places to eat lunch in…

Think of an 80's high school reunion with an 80's cover band playing. Gold streamers, makeshift stage, old tv's and drinks and christmas lighting..
It's kind of corny, but oh, the comraderie!!
Where else do you find GREAT karaoke singers (regulars!!)
or a whole room singing to Bohemian Rhapsody? It was awesome.
Karaoke in nature is corny and thrives in little places like these...
It's no club I can tell you that. -

The Vegas-like strip mall should have scared us off, but we were hungry and needed a place close to where we were going to a show.
We walked in, and again, should have been scared off by the "straight from Bankgok" band posters plastered on the walls. Besides, the strange Thai/Japanese combo was a mystery to us.
We walked through the club area, complete with a huge stage, and found a seat near the sushi bar. My fiance kept saying that the place looked sketchy and we should leave. I stood my ground and told him we should stay, and I'm glad we did!
We ordered a bunch of sushi plus the Tom Kha Gai soup off of the Thai menu. Let me tell you, the Tom Kha Gai was some of the best I've tried. It was spicy, flavorful with strips of lemongrass floating around.
The sushi was also very good. I have to tell you, I was a bit skeptical because the sushi chefs weren't Japanese, but they turned out some good rolls.
Don't be scared by the looks of Amagi, it's actually a decent place and the Tom Kha Gai soup is out of this world. -

I have never had food that was this disappointing before. I work near this place and am always on the hunt for new sushi joints so some of my coworkers and I tried it out one day.
When we walked in for lunch it was completely empty. It also smelled like old cigarette smoke and cat spray. We should have turned around right away (and I almost did) but for some reason we agreed to stay.
The smell was completely overwhelming. The sushi rolls were incredibly small and I was scared the entire time that I might die from them.
Don't go...they're closed for lunch now but I will never eat here at any time of the day again. -

Wow, not bad for a Thai - Japanese Fusion restaurant and I know Japanese restaurant and sushi and they did a pretty good job.
Their rolls are pretty good such as their crunchy shrimp roll, and salmon skin roll and for their Thai dishes, yellow curry and Pad Thais were good too.
I think this is one of the few successful fusion restaurant thus far (^_^) So if you're in the mood for Thai or Japanese, why choose one when u can have both. -

I love, Love, LOVE this place!!
This place is the setting for some of my favorite memories, most of which I've embellished since I don't actually remember all the details. Top THAT, crazy juxtaposition!!
This one time, it was my friend's birthday and they let us bring in a penis-shaped cake. Or maybe it was boobs. This other time we just sat there and rolled around in what I like to call "The Capn's Chairs" at the bar. I met an awesome guy here once and he took me on the most amazing adventure for the next four months of my life. I even walked here in the pouring rain once when I lived just a couple blocks away.
The beers are $2 too expensive, you have to sit in the dining room if you order food, the DJs are pushy for tips and it's in a strange area of East Hollywood. BUT there is always an interesting mix of people, a 70s-style sunken bar, ample parking, and most importantly, a real stage complete with red velvet curtain and gold tinsel fringe at the top. Who's in for karaoke?!? -

Anywhere that you can get 12 (quality) sushi rolls, soup and all-you-can-eat salad for the $8.61 (tax included) lunch special gets an A+ in my book.
The decor is shabby, but if you go at night, it looks "cozy." The singing band is hilariously entertaining, but in the karaoke room, the singers take it a little too seriously, and I felt like I was auditioning to be on American Idol. I'd only venture in there if you had the voice of Barbara Streisand. -

When you walk into this place, you have a choice. A very important one. You either go left, or you go right. This decision having a great effect on your entire dining experience. I started to go left, but my friends led me to the right. When I walked into the 'dining room', I thought I stepped into the twilight zone. There were chirstmas ornaments hanging from the ceiling along with faux snowflakes. That was a bit odd. But nothing more odd the the elderly Japanese man singing his best karaoke to Billy Joel's 'You May be Right'. Then all of a sudden this Japanese woman in her 50's got on the dance floor and began hula hooping. The 3 of us looked at each other and laughed. No words needed to be said, it was just plain funny. We ended up here after attempting Sushi Dan, but it was closed for the evening. So now I found a new place for late night sushi dining.
As far as the food goes...yeah, I've had better... And I certainly wouldn't choose this place over my fave sushi place, but hey it was a lot of fun.
On a side note, my friends ordered the 'double shrimp' roll and they LOVED it. I had spicy tuna which was eh, average at best. I also had tuna tataki which was eh, decent.
The service was friendly, and it was a hell of an entertaining night. -

Ok, so I didn't really eat here, but I sang here. It was a "let's go to a bunch of fun places and drink one drink at each place and leave" kind of night...I had a $16.00 cosmo, and it was good, but my real reason for loving this place was the awesome karaoke. They have a red velvet curtain, and good sound system, and a good crowd. I have never felt so immediatley comfortable in a bar, and it was so much fun! I sang some madonna and people danced, and I saw the coolest asian elvis I have ever seen, and he got soo into his singing that I was in awe. It might not have been the best singing, but he got an A for effort. This place doesn't look like much because it's in a strip mall and I must have passed it so many times before someone took me there..but I will definitley go back!

FAQ
Q: Okay, so you're always there to sing karaoke, but have you eaten there?
A: You don't need the food there, all you need is the cheap booze and the songs and the singing along and the dancing.
Q: One dollar to sing a goddamn song??
A: Chill-out. That initial dollar goes to the bar and anything additional is for the karaoke host. so, tip your host. Martin is a great guy.
Q: Why does it take me five years to get a drink?
A: I'll bet this isn't the first time you've had this problem at a relatively busy bar. Let me introduce you to a word called "Assertive." Enjoy.
FYI ... Yah, I'm a regular there. Yah, I sing all the time. Yah, deal with it.Listed in: The Places I Go Out

Here is a place that has been around a very long time. Right inside the Gower Gultch, sharing a parking lot with Denny's and Togo's, this unassuming Japanese restaurant is convenient and the food is more than decent. There is a bar inside, a karaoke area, and inside the restaurant section, there is live entertainment, but it seems mostly geared to the Japanese community, many of which make this their spot. There is a separate sushi bar and my rating for this place has more to do with the sushi than the standard menu which might only get about three stars on its own. Walking in the old doors and finding your way to the sushi bar at the rear might make you wonder if you would want to stay. Despite the somewhat cheesy and maybe cheap atmosphere, the sushi is pretty damn good. Try a rainbow roll, or my favorite, the Kimosabe Roll. Over the years, I have stopped in and picked up to go sushi, and rolls, or sat at the bar and had it there. I have not been dissapointed. You might be in America, eating Japanese food prepared by a Mexican guy, but everyone is well trained and most important, the sushi is fresh as it is reasonable. For sheer convenience, Amagi's can't be beat. Easy to park, walk in, its never really crowded, and you order sushi and in no time at all, there it is. Of course the rolls take a little time, so start off with some sake and finish the night with Green Tea ice cream.
As for the regular menu, its decent and reasonable. Tempura is decent as is the rest of the menu, although the salad bar is very limited. -

BEST In Holly!!! Not just because there are wannabe American Idol idiots singing their hearts out , or the late hours they stay open, or the great staff they have there simply because of the food.
Real quick story here: A couple of years back me and a buddy were gonna go clubbin (right down the street at the MUSIC BOX, and we were gonna hook up with some sweet julies from school, and we stopped at my fav. sushi place in Holly, and this really fine chick (Priti) called my boy 15 times (she would have called me 20 time but:
a) She hated me and b) I couldn't afford a cell phone) so long story short (mabye not) The food was better than trying to get laid that night!!!!!! No joke! we stayed there till closing drinking Kubota Sake (cold of course son) and eating sashimi and like 10 rolls. So if u ever read this Priti: u missed out!!!! Damm after writing that story I feel alot better, actually I dont ,now i wanna know what the F happened w/ Priti.
Yeah the the food rocks. I love it. One of my top five restaurants ever.
Priti call me!! I finally got a cell phone!! We can go get sushi at Amagi in Hollywood!! Peace.Listed in: The Places I Go Out

a spot that serves japanese AND thai food that's located in a vegas-y shopping center called the "Gower Gultch"?? hmmmm. under normal circumstances i'd drive right by but i was feelin saucy (and lacked the motivation to find something else) so i ended up here on a thursday night. some friends and i wanted to grab a drink and some eats but when our original plans fell through we ended up at the bar at amagi's. all in all..not too shabby.
the bar itself is a little divey with an ample selection of beer & liquor. the bartender was a little ambivalent at first but eventually warmed up after awhile. my padthai was surprisingly pirty damn good but my friend's radna was not. it was described as noodles with vegetables and gravy...but the plate that came out was all gravy and maybe 2 or 3 3 noodles. tasted good..but who wants a plate of gravy?
when we got there around 630 it was all but empty, but by the time we left (845-ish) it was starting to fill up with what i'm guessing were the karaoke regulars. not sure if i'd go back but i'll def keep amagi's in mind for future reference. -

I remember we were bored one night and decided to get something to drink. Why not try Amagi? So random.... Anyway, we enter and we are seated in a booth. It doesn't seem that they have much clientele so it was relaxing that it was just 2 of my friends and I. They have a Japanese and Thai menu. It seems that it's owned by Thai people as the workers are Thai. Anyway, we order a mix of Japanese and Thai dishes that were so-so. Calamari isn't bad and neither was the rest of the Thai food. The alcohol selection is so-so as well. We just ended up getting Kirin Beer and sake for some sake bombs the whole time. I wouldn't mind coming back, but I wouldn' t rave about it either.
