I had an excellent experience here yesterday.  I bought a groupon (http://www.groupon.com) for a cut, blow dry and bikini wax for 50$ to Amaci.  Rosemarie was my stylist and she gave me a beautiful cut and was kind and friendly.  She was also quick and she blew out my curly hair into a beautiful straight 'do with no trouble at all.  Then Amma did my bikini wax, she was quick, friendly and efficient.  I mean, NO ONE likes having hair ripped out of their crotch, but she made it a good and pleasant experience.
All of this happened in just about an hour, which I thought was great because I had just worked a full day and was tired.  I was treated very well despite being a "coupon" client.  The location is very convienient to downtown employees- the only possible complaint I could think of is that it's a small studio so it was pretty loud and everyone was pretty on top of each other.  All in all I would consider it a great please to go for a fast, friendly and good quality salon experience but not where I would head to for a pampering spa experience- just a note Amaci staff, for the prices charged at the Salon, you might consider offering clients a drink when they arrive?

Thanks Rosemarie and Amma!

The eyebrow threading at Amaci is solid.  I called in the morning and scored a same-day appointment with the super-lovely Amma.  After a little bit of squealing and bonding over our shared hometown (revere!), she quickly got down to business.  She was really attentive and did a good job on the brows, but I was a little thrown off when she seemed so ready to dive in without soliciting any input regarding what I wanted her to do with my brows or face.  I had to jump in with my thoughts when she starting coming at me wielding her thread.

That being said, I was just content with the results - they seemed a little less polished than when I get them done by Fahane at Luiz Salon on Newbury.  $16 for the threading with a 20% first-timer discount, not including tip.

I went to Amaci Salon last night for the first time - I had a groupon so I tought I would give it a try.  First, I had Curtis for my haircut.  He was amazing!  He is the first person since I moved to Boston three years ago that actually took time and looked at my hair, discussed it and then gave me suggestions.  He understood what I asked for and then gave me an amazing cut.  He also shampooed my hair twice, giving me a great scalp massage eash time.  Then I went for the bikini wax.  Amma was very quick and did a great job.  It always hurts but this time it was done quickly so it wasn't too bad.  She also suggested that I get my eyebrows threaded which I had never done before and they look great!  Overall, they spent alot of time on me and were so friendly and nice I will definitely go back.

I have been going Amad for about 10 years now on and off (due to work travel) and I have nothing but good things to say. Over the years he has stayed on top of current hair/color trends and will not lead you a stray with his recommendations.
He runs a professional shop and his coloring ability is top notch. He is able to run the full spectrum of natural high/lo combination and all the way to fun chunky dramatic highlighted contrasts. The best thing about the way he color and cuts is they all grow out insanely natural. You never get straight up roots like most places he does it so it all blends in naturally as it grows out.
I have SUPER thick hair and it's the only place I can go to have it naturally thinned out and not get a lot of frizzy layers that make my hair look shaggy.
Oh and of course Amma is amazing for threading.

It is okay -- not too bad not too good.  I had color and cut with Maria.  I hear Amad is better.  She wasn't bad -- she did a good job on color, although honestly, I think it would have come out the same out of the box from CVS.  The cut was cool, but she shot down a lot of my ideas -- I mind that.  I wish she worked with them rather than poo-poo a lot of them.  And I am not some trashy chick -- I know style, I just wanted something cool and unusual since I am a student and I won't have to look for a job for another year.  She just does simple stuff.  Nothing spectacular.

At first glance, Amaci is terrifyingly medicore; this is why I would never let a member of their seemingly novice staff come anywhere near my tresses with any manner of potentially hazardous hair products/devices. Come to think of it, the employees are rather reminiscent of the staff at The Salon at 10 Newbury (see review below for further details, comparisons).

Instead, the reason why I frequent Amaci is their divine eyebrow threading. Amaci is one of the very few salons in Boston to have this beauty procedure that I've personally come to not be able to live without. Who wants to suffer from post-wax trauma (i.e forehead breakouts - eww!). So, I go to Amaci, and they do a beyond fantastic job. The Moroccan threader is very meticuluos; so meticulous, in fact, that I thought she might have removed my eyebrows entirely (that's how much time she spends). I couldn't imagine there could be any of my eyebrows left after all the work she had done. But, when I looked in the mirror, it was pure divinity.

So eyebrow threading is the positive. The negative is their bikini waxing services. Unless you want your nether regions burned off with their scalding hot wax, DO NOT test out these services. Trust me from experience to know. I will divulge no more information than to say I'm lucky to have survived this horrific event. I had my money refunded, thank goodness, and will heed my friend Jaime's advice to utilize Bella Sante for preffered waxing services.

Brenda colored my hair twice. The second time she said she thought it needed a toner. I trusted her and said okay. It turned my hair orange and she charged me $40 for it. I also think she was overcharging me in general, because I usually went when she was the only one there and the prices didn't seem to add up.

I've been going to Amaci Salon for about a year, and I after years of searching, I'm happy to find a place that does such good service.  Amad, my stylist, is easy to schedule appointments with, stays on top of current style trends, and is very efficient and accomodating.  The real strength is that the salon gives you the full boutique experience with better value prices.

Ok so I am a bit perplexed by the poor reviews. I have been having Amad cut and highlight my blonde hair for over 5 years now. I am very selective on who can cut  my hair and he has been great. Even after all this time he always consults to see what changes I would like to make if any. He has tackfully talked me out of a few bad decisions, certian bangs aren't for me.

If I was unhappy with a cut he would gladly let me come back and correct it no questions asked.

The Salon is friendly and professional. Also the eyebrow threading is amazing much better than a wax.

They made me look like a boy. Short hair can look cute and feminine, but I was neither of those things after my haircut there a few years ago. The male hairstylists were creepy. They have a 20% off coupon in those college circulars. That's why I went. I learned my lesson.

Amaci has some great talent but the salon has its drawbacks.  For the life of me, I do not understand why I pay more for a cut and highlights at this location when using regular staff (I'm not talking about Amad..obviously you pay a premium for the owner)  than some of the other salons I've been to on Newbury street (and I've been to a handful of the top places over the last 10 years in Boston). The place is small and somewhat out of the way. The hair washing chairs are also quite uncomfortable, with no cushioning for your neck.  Lasat minute cancellations/reschedules are also frequent with some of the regular staff on weekends. Perhaps I am unlucky, but at one point I had three Saturday appointments (go every two months) cnx in a row. Also some of the girls dont do a good job about keeping the articles in the waxing room properly cleaned, and I have frequently gotten bumps from infected pores after waxes whereas this doesnt happen at any of the other places I've been to. All in all, I think Amad and Rossmary are truly amazing stylists which has been the reason for my continued patronage (both completely different but extremely skilled), and that the salon would really benefit from a different location and some modifications when it comes to the hair washing stations and waxing practices.

There are several reasons why I rated this poorly... see below.  The reason I am writing this review at all (I never have before) is because of reason #1--  I feel people should be warned.

Just fyi, I was there to hopefully at least correct a few pieces of bad blond highlights I gave myself (my hair is brown and turned a little red) and ideally get additional highlights (foil).  I told him I just didn't want red.  Not only was the redness of those pieces not changed, he put red tones throughout ALL my hair!  I thought it looked pinkish afterwards!  With no way to fix!

1) First, they must have radically spammed google and other review sites to get the ratings that got me there once (never again, read on...)  I thought that many positive reviews could not be fabricated.... but I was wrong!
2) I probably got the worst color I remember getting, and this from the owner of the salon, Amad, proclaimed "color expert".
3) The price is among the most expensive I have paid.  I didn't use the coupon because of the few negative reviews not spammed out said that they got poor treatment at sight of the coupon, which gamble didn't seem worth it to me for 10% off or whatever, right?
4)  The hospitality was bad.  I walked in and was not greeted for a while, I think there wasn't even someone at the front desk.  Then Amad said it was going to be very late.  Then I acted mad/disappointed and he said, ok, I can do it now (already 20 min late), as if he was doing me a favor.  For any more upscale place, I would expect offering of a drink as well.
5) The atmosphere was weird.  I was the only client in the salon for a while.  Then there was just one other person.
6)  Less related but they said that parking would be compensated, but be careful WHICH garage.  I ended up at the nearest one I saw, but it was the wrong one and a couple hours cost more than $20 though I don't remember exactly.

I am very picky, but, this was the worst of (I counted) 15 salons I've been to over probably 10 years from Seattle to DC to Boston to  Oklahoma.

While I have never gotten a hair cut at Amaci, word about town is that they do great work. But besides hair styles, let's talk about eyebrow threading. Sounds skeevy, but Nadia (who also does waxing, make-up application) is the best. She's very meticulous, making sure every hair is accounted for! My eyebrows look fabulous after every visit. And while this fabulousness doesn't come cheap  - $20 - it's well worth it.
