Review from Kristy N.
This place is right by my gym and I often find myself waiting for the bus in front of their door. I took a look at the menu posted in the window and told myself that 'one of these days, I'm gonna give it a try'. Yesterday was that day.
I am a bit of a fanatic about tom yum soup and when a place does it right, I'm basically hooked for life. It sounds like an easy task but as I slurp my way through Lakeview and surrounding areas, I'm learning that this is just not the case.
The place was completely empty when I walked in..not overly shocking for 8:30 on a Wednesday night. The girls at the front were very nice and I didn't have to wait long for my soup.
it took some restraint to not sip it on the bus but I was able to hold out until I got home. The soup looked promising..lots of fresh mushrooms and chicken. Unfortunately, the appearance was the best part. I ended up having to add hot sauce to it and even then, was underwhelmed.
Due to the convenience factor, I will give this place another shot, but next time I'll opt for the won ton. -

Decent prices, quick delivery and pretty good food. It's probably the best Thai delivery that I've had in our area. My only complaint is that their "spicy" isn't!
Favorites include the Thai BBQ pork skewers, the larb kai, spicy basil noodles, pad thai and potstickers. The veggie tom yum soup is simply delicious - packed with tons of fresh veggies, very light and without that grease factor that Asian soups sometimes have.
Glad to finally have a good delivery spot! -

Food was amazing, (we ordered takeout) but we were floored by the service. It seemed that our order was missing a coke, but no sooner than we realized it was missing, the phone rang, and the owner himself personally brought the coke to our door and apologized. Awesome!

Good pad thai, fast delivery on weeknights. The cucumber salad is bland compared to other places so I would steer clear of it.
after 2 good experiences, i will definitely add always thai to my cellphone! -

I really need to take advantage of the BYOB here one of these days! So far though I've only had a few dishes here. I was pleased with all of them.
I'm not sure what it is, but I love the Crab Rangoon here!! The Thai fried rice is also very good and filling, but possibly a little bland for me. We have always stuck with basic dishes like chicken or shrimp pad Thai. Nothing has ever been disappointing.
A few things to note. They are very stingy with sauces for carryout! Make sure you ask for extra. If you really like spicy I would mention that when ordering. Things aren't quite spicy enough for me, but I like extra spicy.
Prices are very reasonable and check out their website for specials! -

Always Thai is Always Awe...wait for it, wait for it...some!! Seriously, I've had tons of stuff from here and everything is always great. Starters: Shrimp Shumai, spring rolls, crab Rangoon, potstickers...all good.
Entrees: Pad Thai, Pad see ewe, Thai fried rice, Rama. Can't complain. What I think is the best though at Always Thai is the Panang Curry. I've had both chicken and shrimp and the flavor is incomparable.
Do yourself a favor and ALWAYS order from Always Thai!! -

I'm a fried rice fanatic and this place is great! Very tasty. :-)
I've tried other places and I keep coming back here. It's great for carry out and dine in. And they have a couple flat screens on low volume in case you want to catch the game while you eat.
The service is nice and fast.
Oh no!! They changed something! I gave them 4 stars back in April of 2010, but the last two times I went there the fried was was not good. I think they changed their cook or something! I even gave it 2 trys and they both were both a huge disappointment! So bummed! -

Your basic neighborhood thai spot. Nothing fancy, decent food, decent prices, and friendly, fast service. Conveniently located right next to the Irving Park brownline. I live around the corner and usually do carry-out, mostly when I'm hungry after work and am too lazy and/or busy to cook. And like I said, it's right next to the train so it's perfect for stopping in and rolling out... they are super fast too.
It's not your weekend nice dinner type place.. it's more like lunch.. a casual, comfy neighborhood lets-grab-some-grub-real-quick type place. Sorry for saying "type-place" twice ;) -

I used to come to Always Thai back 9 years ago. The food was amazing! My family and I would order it for carry out when my sister in law lived in the near by Lofts at Ravenswood. So delicious.
But upon coming back i have been disappointed but hopeful. I am not sure if they changed owners or what, but I have gone 3 times this past year to give the restaurant that I enjoyed so much in the past a fighting chance.
No such luck!
I ordered their panang curry with shrimp that I had used to order in the past and that was the big give away that something was just not right. The panang was just there, a bit bland, a bit sugary, no hard spicy kick like before. i figured eh! I just may have had a bad day.
Another attempt at another time, I ordered their pad se ew with beef, and really just ok at best.
Third time was today and I ordered their spicy basil with beef. VERY SAD. It was not spicy basil, it wasn't spicy at all, and I think I just saw one basil leaf! Gah! That just made me sad and disappointed that now I have to try another place that may be more of a distance from me but can sacrifice the ride for consistent tasty Thai food. -

Definitely my favorite crab rangoon I've had. http://Seamless.com has the wrong menu for them so my order got cancelled and I never got the message. Instead of sending the items they had they cancelled it completely and now everything except Chicago's Pizza is closed. Next time I'll just go somewhere else, it's not worth the hassle.

Always Thai is always good and now they are under new management.
I met up with some of my writing friends here for a nice post holiday dinner and to state our creative intentions out loud for the new year.
We ordered Som Tum (Papaya) Salad. Slices of green papaya, tomatoes, string beans, hot peppers and ground peanuts in a tasty lime juice was just delicious. We also sampled their Edamame (steamed soybeans with salt) and it was pretty good.
For my meal I had their sesame chicken with fried rice and it was very scrumptious. I would like to come back here and try their curry's...good thing there is always next time.
Also, this is a BYOB restaurant which is nice, but we forgot the booze, so we just stuck with jasmine and green tea which is a great way to warm up on a chilly evening.
I also enjoyed their very vibrant atmosphere and the service was pretty good too. Looks like the new management is getting their act together.Listed in: Top Restaurants

When Stacey A and I moved into our place, the girls who lived there before us left us a list of awesome places to eat/drink in the neighborhood. Always Thai was on the list, and it's super easy to get to (right across from the Irving Park Brown Line stop) but for some reason it took us half a year to try it out. Yeah, we're slackers. We still haven't been to the restaurant with the giant Abe Lincoln head, either.
We were craving Thai last night, so we called in an order for pickup. I wasn't feeling like a "real" dinner, so I got the potstickers and the pork fried rice (Thai style).
The portions are ginormous. I'm glad I just got an appetizer and rice, because I would have totally wasted a full size dinner. As it was, I still had lots of rice left over. I kind of wish there were multiple sizes of dishes, especially the rice - I definitely got more than my $6.50 worth, but I'm the kind of person that puts leftovers in the fridge with really great intentions but then ends up throwing them out after a few days. It would have been perfect if I could have gotten a container about 1/3 of the size.
Everything I ate was tasty, and the sauce that the potstickers came with was particularly delightful. I spilled some of it on my coffee table, and I didn't even get mad, because it was easy to clean up and it matched the wood on my coffee table.
The restaurant itself is pretty small, but it smelled really good when we came in to pick up our food. I wouldn't mind showing up early to pick up my takeout just to enjoy the Thai food smells. -

Yummy food, yummy portions and yummy prices.
What's not so yummy? Finding chicken giblets in your veggie pad thai. Yeah, that's right. All throughout my delicious noodles, peanuts and veggies were little chunks of chicken. Not. Good. Imagine if I had been an actual vegetarian?
But other than that, everything was very good. We started with the crab rangoon and veggie eggrolls, and both were great. The crab rangoon was probably the best I've ever had (not that I've had a lot, just sayin'), and the eggrolls were good, although, a little small.
My husband got the veggie noodles (actual vegetarian), and I tasted and highly enjoyed them. My pad thai was very good also, but yeah, kind of ruined once the giblets were discovered.
Because they're right down the street from us, I would give Always Thai a few more chances. The service was fast and friendly also. -

I go here quite often for lunch as I'm a huge fan of Thai food and finding this place near my Wushu school, was a real gem. Seating is always prompt and the place is never crowded, even during the height of lunch. The staff is always friendly and ready to serve although, I was misunderstood once and got a different dish than the one ordered, but it wasn't a big deal as that dish I got was my second choice and great too. The appetizers like the steamed spinach or chive dumplings are dreamy; maybe worth the trip just for them. The main dishes are plentiful in quantity and the ingredients are always fresh. During the hot summer months, the bubble tea here is just so darn good, my favorite being the mango. The price is decent for the portions, but expect to spend a buck if you get appetizers and main dishes.
Pros: Quality, Ample Choices, Near the EL
Cons: Poor Parking
Overall Rating: 4.25 of 5
Recommendation: Highly Recommended -

I'm a sucker for Thai food. It's really and truly sad what I'll do for crab rangoon and pad thai.
Thankfully, this place is located all of 3 blocks from my house. You can call in your order, laze around for 15 minutes, and walk over there, and the MOST polite man in the whole world will have all your food ready for you in brown paper bags.
I was feeling adventurous one night, so I ordered some interesting sweet & sour chicken thing that involved a lot of pineapples and red peppers. It was good, but the sauce was really soupy. Next time I think I'll stick to pad thai and potstickers. -
Review from Beth M.
I've tried the following dishes here so far, all of which are vegan with tofu: green curry, yellow curry, pad khee mao, spicy basil leaves and the ginger dish. They are generally pretty tasty. I especially liked the fresh veggies in the green curry; the ginger dish is something different from typical Thai offerings. However, the dishes are not very spicy, even if they are marked as being "hot". Ask for "Thai spicy".
The brown sauce here is a little salty compared to others I've had, and it's plain white rice, not Jasmine. I wouldn't get the miso soup again - too salty and no flavour. However, this isn't bad, and it's a convenient place to get some quick Thai to go. -

On one of my recent neighborhood spelunking adventures, I decided to pop into Always Thai to gear up for a night of bowling. Good idea!
The pot-stickers were crunchy in all the right places, cooked to perfection. The chili pepper chicken is to die for! I tried some golden noodle dish and was less than impressed.
The server was very pleasant, though my friend had some difficulty ordering an unsweetened iced tea due to language barriers. There was also some snarky patron who sounded like and slightly resembled the girl who played Amy in 40 Year Old Virgin. If you recall what she sounded like, you can understand how that may not be conducive to creating a warm dining experience - she did very little for the ambiance. -

Good Thai food, I ordered for myself and a few co-workers for our lunch break and actually caught a good deal through http://Chitownmenus.com in that we ordered for 4 people and got free pad thai for ordering more than $30 worth the food AND i got an additional 10% off by entering BLUE10 in the promo code area on the site.
I love how fish is used in Thai cuisine so I got catfish curry that was very very good, but I've had better at other thai places in the city. I would order here again because of the bang to buck ratio. If you want to feed 6 people for around 35 dollars...order online, great price. -

Just finished my first, and LAST, order from this place. Here's why I'm tossing their takeout menu in the trash:
1. An hour wait for delivery
2. Added $3 delivery charge on a $10 order, plus tip
3. Ordered Thai iced coffee with no milk. It came with milk (and they even wrote "no milk" in big letters on the ticket.) I called and asked them to send a new one- wouldn't ordinarily bother, but since I paid the delivery charge I decided I should get what I ordered. They came with a new drink that was half spilled inside the plastic bag! So basically I got half a coffee in a cup, and half in a bag.
4. Huge piece of chicken in what was supposed to be vegan spicy basil w/ tofu.
5. Despite all of the above, I would still give it another chance if the food was great. But it was bland, not spicy whatsoever, and incredibly watery- the vegetables were practically submerged in sludge!
Still looking for a good Thai place in Chicago, but crossing Always Thai off the list. -

Just went tonight...Cute decor, really slow service. The waitress said that they'd just gotten new management and that they are incompetent. Hmm, some human resources issues there I believe.
But after waiting forever to even get some water, we were really pleasantly surprised by the quality of the food. The chicken satay's peanut sauce was awesome, and it even came with little squares of toasted bread to mop up the extra sauce. We had the spicy basil chicken and the peppersteak, and they were both generous portions and well cooked. -

Been going for years!
We celebrate a friends birthday here every year 15 to 20 people! Overall the food is good! Very clean, very friendly and service is good! One thing is I won't order anything with beef in it! Their beef seems a little off!

I hadn't been to Always Thai in ages but, when my teenage nephew was in town and wanted Thai, I found Always Thai on Grub Hub. It's now my go-to place for Thai. Unlike most Thai place, they don't spare the heat in the Rama Chicken.
Best of all, the delivery was exceptional. The food arrived piping hot and 15 minutes early. (Ordered at 5:30 on a Friday evening...) The portions were huge. Three people got two meals out of three entrees and two appetizers (one free). With $3 delivery, the total was $40. -

Always Thai shoved some menus in my apartment buildings fence. I took one and ordered a few days later. I guess their marketing tactic worked.
I didn't venture very far out from the usual: ordered chick pad thai (which was pretty good, and enough for two meals). I also tried the Mango Salad, which I'd probably skip next time too much dressing and a little too sweet. Delivery came in about 40 minutes. -

I've eaten at the restaurant, and ordered a few times. Overall, the food is good. It's not the best Thai food I've had, but for the price, it can't be beat. You can eat at the restaurant for like $10 a person, including tax and tip, which is pretty great for a city place!

I used to eat at Always Thai when i worked on Ravenswood and the food was not too shabby. They used to have these reviews posted from the paper and such that gave them like 3 stars. Funny they would post 3 star ratings. They also claimed some sort of Arun's fame but i forgot exactly how they were connected.
Anywho recently i think there was a big turnover or a new owner because the food changed dramatically. It's not as consistent and good. Still i'm a thai food junkie so it will do in a pinch but otherwise it's not on my yummy radar.Listed in: Thai-Tastic

All around good Thai.
I was starving after attending a studio opening, so we went here. I was pleasantly surprised by the decor- real cut orchids on the table. Since it as a Sunday, the places was fairly empty (only us and some other couple).
Our service was prompt. The food was delicious and spicy but not overwhelmingly spicy. The peanut sauce on my thing (tofu, broccoli, and carrots) was excellent. The portions were a decent size as well. The waitress packed up my food, since I had leftovers. What was really awesome was that she gave additional fresh rice to me free of charge.
I think if I'm back in the area and craving Thai, I will go back. -

Very friendly service and pretty good food. I came here for lunch and it was nice and warm inside with such relaxing music that I almost fell asleep at the table. Inexpensive, extensive menu. The chicken egg drop soup and spring rolls were pretty bland but the green curry was good and had just the right amount of spice. I'll try it again for dinner.

We live right up the street, and always fans of places within walking distance, so we gave it a go.
Placed an online order (how convenient!) for some shrimp tom yum, veggie egg rolls, and shrimp pad thai (yeah.. we like our shrimp). 20bucks, 30 minutes, and a short walk later, dinner was on the table.
I can definitely say we'll be ordering from Always Thai again! All the food was hot and delicious (even after the walk home in the snow), and while they gave us chicken egg rolls instead of the veggie ones we ordered, they were tasty, too. Sometimes mistakes happen for the best. Definitely a solid Thai place in a convenient little location. Perhaps next time we'll go there and BYOB it up! -

I have made it my personal mission to try as many Thai places as possible and let's just say it would be difficult to not just stop here.
The first time I tried Always Thai, we dined in. I would describe the ambiance as quaint and carefree. Sure there were mismatched glasses here and there but atop each table there sat a real live beautiful purple orchid (small in size, didn't take up much space).
We were quickly greeted and given water. We took our time looking over the menu even though we usually order the basics when trying out a new Thai place. We figure, if they do these right, the rest should follow suit (hopefully). They pretty much serve all that is to be expected at any decent Thai restaurant but with the added bonus of Bubble Tea which not all offer.
To drink, I ordered a Thai iced coffee which was sweet, delish and pretty much perfect. Just wished the glass they served it in was a little bit bigger.
We decided to skip the appetizer and go straight for the good stuff. I ordered chicken pad Thai and my boyfriend ordered the chicken panang curry. The chicken was tender and sliced nice and thin, not dry in the least and GENEROUS portions of meat were added to the dishes. The pad Thai noodles were very thin but cooked perfectly. Had just the right amount of bite to them. Out of all the pad Thai I have had so far, this is hands down my favorite. The curry was milky with a great balance of coconut and peanut flavors. I've noticed with a lot of curries, it's difficult to really taste the peanut side of things because of spiciness that's overpowering. This curry was spicy without causing a sweatastrophe and contained thinly sliced red and green bell peppers.
I have ordered in and have been just as pleased (if not more so actually). My suggestion would be to order in if you are willing to pay the delivery and tip fees... The portion sizes are no doubt much bigger when you carry out. Definitely more bang for your buck!
Take advantage of the beverages, which are also much larger than what is brought to you inside the restaurant. I tried the honeydew bubble tea which was a little chunkier with un-ground ice than I'd prefer but packed with unbelievable melon flavor.
We tried the fried app platter and that was all around tasty. Their sauces are pretty spectacular. My friend was trying Thai for the first time and ordered the shrimp pad Thai and loved it.
All in all, yes, I will keep trying new Thai places but will be sure to check back with Always Thai on a regular basis! -

This place has fantastic food. We were a very large group, and I'm pretty sure they only have one oven at this joint. As our dishes came out at all different times. I think we were a party of 18 people or so. It's good for groups, but I wouldn't go more than 8 to 10 people here.
This place is very affordable and a BYOB restaurant in North Center. I had the pad thai, and a variety of appetizers, and everything was truly good.
I don't believe there was a corkage fee, so I say drink up. Parking may be a challenge as you having Irving Park Road and Ravenswood as your two choices. -

Good food, good portions. Quick delivery, and the food arrived hot and yummy.
I loved their green curry, and egg rolls. We also had their pot stickers, which were delicious. I have to admit, my husband claims their curries are too sweet, but I thought they were great. Their Pad Thai is also very good.
In the end though, we are sticking with Uptown Thai as our "official' Thai. -

This place can be amazing or horrible, depending on what you order.
The pad thai is always strong - regardless of flavor (I've tried tofu, chicken, pork), and they give you a huge portion (I once at one portion over 4 days). The bubble tea is good too (try the mango).
I've tried a few dishes outside of pad thai and they haven't been very good IMHO. Mildly disappointing since this place is only a few feet from my doorstep!
The service is excellent and delivery is quick. The owners are very sweet. My recommendation... pad thai and mango bubble tea. Can't go wrong. -

Ever since I moved into the city I have had a penchant for eating Thai on a night when I don't know where else to go. Very fortunately for me, there are A LOT of very good Thai restaurants (a couple of which I should definitely write reviews for) by me. But as always, I'm willing to experiment. My aunt mentioned a place that she wanted to take me to that her hair dresser had recommended. My aunt was just ecstatic about it. I pretty much base all Thai restaurants off of a place called Cozy that is located on Sheffield in Wrigleyville; I think they have the best selection, they have your typical Thai plates, and it's just very homey.
So I went to Always Thai last night. It's BYOB which I really appreciate; especially for a dinner in the middle of the week. We got an appetizer of shumai, and then like steamed won-tons and then this steamed spinich thing. I had never had the spinich thing and it was delicious! For dinner I got the mixed vegetables with shrimp. My aunt got their pad thai, and I do have to say it looks really good and you can pretty much judge any Thai restaurant off of their pad thai. This is sort of silly to say, but the rice that they served my dish with was very sticky and I thought it was really good. . . . .again, just white rice, but it's the little things.
When they served the check they served it with "Thai" fortune cookies which were really cute, and I enjoyed my fortune: You will live a long life, but never get old. That's a good one, and come to think of it my favorite Thai place [Cozy] doesn't even give fortunes; never realized that until now.
Anywho, over all it was really good, but because I have a Thai place that is already very near and dear to my heart, this one will not get as high of marks as it potentially could. But if your a bit out west, and you want some good Thai with not a lot of people crowding up the restaurant, I totally recognize this. ALSO, it was right next to the Irving Park brown line, which would probably be hugely convenient for a lot of people who want some Thai food! -

I moved into a new place and decided I'd get some takeout to celebrate the new place.
I ordered tom yum and the green curry, and sticky rice.
The soup was delicious, and delivered very hot (even though there was some confusion on intercoms, phone numbers, etc).
The green curry was incredibly flavorful and a bit spicy, but was really delicious. It tasted great as left overs the next day, as the portions were pretty big.
The sticky rice however... that was quite horrible. After a bite or two, I threw it away. Something about the bananas tasted funny and the rice was incredibly syrupy and runny.
Overall good experience, but not my favorite thai place in this area by a long shot. -

In a city with 12 of everything, and only a few do it right, Always Thai is a welcome top tier thai restaurant. When I lived in the area, my roomates and I visited at least once every two weeks. One roomate was a huge fan of the curry dishes, which if you ask for extra meat, you get enough for a family and it will only cost a couple bucks extra. The other not so adventurous one, could still get down on the soups and rangoon. I was a huge fan of the Pad Thai and actually judge all Pad Thai I have tried since against it. The Pad Prike is also well done!
I will always seek this place out and you should too...A clap of the hands to the beautiful mural on the wall as well. -

ok, so i'm a picky SOB when it comes to my thai food...
everytime i order from a new spot i get the Pad Thai over all else...
it's like my Thai litmus test...
anywho, the delivery time wasn't too bad, maybe 30-40 min...
as for the food, it was still very hot, packed to the point of seam splittin' the container, chalked full of veggies and tofu (which is where most places are more noodle heavy)...
quality flavor and enough to make for 2 meals equals thumbs up to me... -

The food here is really not that good. The crab rangoon is bland and the portions are small. There's almost a sour taste to the ones we had. The dishes aren't all that great either. For the price range, there are so many other Thai restaurants that do such a fantastic job. I got fried rice from here once, and it was mushy! It's such a basic dish - how do you mess that up? The pad see eiw on another occasion was very dry and bland. It certainly didn't seem fresh. The spring rolls - nothing to write home about. The only dish here that I've had that's been decent was the panang curry. Unfortunately, there was a hair in the rice that came with it. It's too bad, because this place is literally around the corner from my place.
