I love this place and have eaten here many times. I concur with the general yummy affordable fast and friendly consensus and simply wanted to add a big thumbs up for their tabbouleh. Loaded with bright, fresh flavor, herbs and lemon juice, this is a must-have side for me!
Note on previous reviews: right on about lunch crowds, avoid the 12-1 crush if you can. -

A definite solid, positive experience - though I will have to return again for further evaluation - wish I could have given 3.5 stars - (still debating between 3 and 4 stars) and was hoping to be able to give 5; but not this trip. Went for an 11:30 lunch - yes; the line got kind of long after I got there - so they do get crowded at lunch.
Ordered a Beef/Lamb Gyro combo meal, Chicken Shawarma platter, and hummus appetizer. Added one beverage - total $23.
The gyro was wonderful - great pita, meat, tzatziki and veg; served with a side of fries that were perfectly cooked crispy on the outside and tender on the inside. After reading all the reviews in other places extolling the chicken shawarma, I was disappointed to find it so dry and salty that more than half of it was inedible.
The bed of rice it sat upon, however - along with the garlic sauce it was served with was fabulous.
I'll go back - service was friendly and helpful - only waited about 7 or 8 minutes for food - place was clean and it was an enjoyable meal. -

I'm gonna give this place 5 stars mostly because of where it is. Definitely there's no better or interesting food in the area and it's very reasonably priced. The stuffed grape leaves are the best I've had.
Definitely worth hoofing it over from the Holiday Inn to avoid their nasty "Good Eats" restaurant. -

A whole in the wall family restaurant with a Mediterranean menu. Lots of different food, but I'm addicted to the Chicken Shawarma. What is shawarma? It's hard to describe. Basically it is a grilled chicken but that only begins to describe it.
And I don't know what they do to their rice, but it is SOOOO good. Very rich and moist.
it is a must visit, must have.
One tip, it gets really crowded during lunch from 12-1. Go a little later or a little earlier. -

I was stuck up here during lunch and there's not much more besides hotels and airplanes overhead. My falafel crave was satisfied and karate chopped with a vengeance at Alwadi's.
The service is a little slower and the prices just a smidgeon higher than what I am used to, but since they toast their sandwiches it makes the wait worth the crisp. The meals are filling and the variety is as expected. If I find myself back in the IAH area, I'm making it a point to stop here. -

Alwadi is at the back of a strip center that runs perpendicular to JFK Blvd just north of Beltway 8. If your driving north on JFK you might never see the place which is probably why I never knew it was there. The website might give you the impression that Alwadi is a classy sit down and order restaurant, but you order from the counter and food comes out quickly. Lunch on a Friday was packed with what looked like a mix of travelers and the business crowd. Parking is free and plentiful which makes for a quick in and out if you're in a hurry.
I ordered the Mixed Grill which came with chicken, beef, and kufta kabobs. The beef and kufta were both moist and seasoned well, but chicken seemed a little on the dry side. If you're hungry the portion of meat on this plate is pretty filling! One the side was hummus, pita bread, rice and cabbage salad. Although the pita bread seemed to be pulled off the store shelf, the hummus had a fresh made flavor. The rice was mixed with some veggies and had a soft buttery taste. My favorite was the cabbage salad which appeared to have a vinegar based dressing but was still crunchy. All of the sides, minus the pita bread, were great complements to the meat.
The mixed grill at $11 was the most expensive plate on the menu and came out in about 5 minutes. Most of the sandwiches were around $6, making the decision between Alwadi and other fast food a no-brainer. I think I found my new place to wait by the airport!

Humble, TX
This place is absolutely exceptional at providing a quick, affordable taste of tasty Mediterranean food in a simple cafe environment.
To make it quick: the meat is very flavorful and delicious and my only complaint is the chicken isn't quite as moist as the beef from time to time ... but still very good. The hummus is terrific but the bread is pretty generic. I absolutely love the hot sauce - you've got to try it! The rice is decent and the cabbage / salad side is surprisingly good. The sandwiches are a great value and the rice plates are very filling when you're hungry.
Overall, great value for your dollar! Very simple and tasty mediterranean meals at the price you'd pay for fast food. You won't find better in this price range anywhere nearby. Definitely stop by and give it a shot. -

Jessica Simpson and Magic Johnson, what do they have in common? This guy has a picture of them and himself up on a wall in the restaurant. Thats when you know you've made it big Mr. Alwadi. REAL BIG
Little place tucked in the back of a strip mall close to IAH right before you get off JFK Blvd to get onto the Beltway. Unsuspectingly great food. Yet another hidden gem of Houston.
Jokes aside. Fast service and an awesome gyro with both beef and lamb cut from the vertical cooker. Tzaziki sauce was good and a decent, but not annoying amount of vegetables were loaded on it. Got a side of hummus with pita bread. Only complaint is that the pita bread was cold. Otherwise amazing. -

Quick. Cheap. Yum.
If you need to catch a flight, stop here first for a quick and cheap bite. The gyros are great, as are their fries. Things are made to order, so they're fresh and hot. -

I have had better but it WAS a good gyro. Thought lettuce would be standard but none on it. Simple restaurant. Clean. Fairly busy at lunch. Flat screen tv with "Science" channel on. I'd go here again.

I ordered the Chicken Shawarma plate to go. The restaurant is in a shopping center with minimal decor, but a large flat screen. The meat was lots of tiny pieces, not like the fresh shaved slices i've had at other places in the past. The rice was a clumpy pilaf. Most disappointing: The pita bread is not homemade :o( But the hummus is good and they give you a whole sauce cup full of tzatziki sauce. Price is very reasonable. Best part: The baklava is amazing!! Cinnamon and nuts in crispy phyllo layers, YumYum! I love Mediterranean food, so maybe I have too high standards. But like I've said, Best Baklava of my life!
