Manhattan, NY
I've been here now for drinks and dinner and think it is a pretty good spot to hit in the neighborhood.
For dinner I had the steak and I going through it very slowly as I didn't want it to be over. The sauce and vegetables were just an added bonus.
It's also good to have a non dodgy place in the heights as well with some 'flavor' and not so sterile of an atmosphere. On weekends they usually have a live band. -

I'm sorry to say that despite a great start, this establishment has taken a dive on many fronts. The service has dropped down to the mediocre depths of many of the other "local" places, barely articulate, inexperienced. The guys that used to be here are gone.
The food menu prices have been raised, but the quality has gone down. The music is blasted like a second rate Latin club.
I haven't returned since.Listed in: In the Heights

Chef Ramsay has to pay them a visit.
This place is under new management and new chef.
The place used to have great food, music, staff and decor.
NOW...
Food: the menu change - when you have been coming for a few years and you crave a specific dish just to come and found out they removes it. The prefix brunch when up a $1.95. For $21.95 you get an appetizer, main course, dessert and unlimited mimosas for 1.5 hours. Taste of the food is still great.
Service - is horrible. They have two waiters which they have no clue what is going on. We got here at 2pm and left at 4pm. The waitress lost our check and gave us someone else check to pay. It took then 25 minutes to take our order and 1 hour to bring the food out. Then when we were ready to pay they say their credit card machine was not working and we had to pay cash. They didn't instruct us were the nearest ATM or Bank was, they just walked away from the table. Not cool at all.
Music: It was so loud for brunch and their were barely any people there. We should have been able to have a nice intimate brunch.
Decor: Seating is uncomfortable, tables are wobbly, frames are slanted, and dirty floors.
I have to make sure I don't forget about the flies... I don't even know where to put this under. There were flies everywhere!
Do I recommend? Hell No. This was the third time I had a bad experience with them in a row. It wasn't a charm. I won't be back. -

Middle Village, NY
The decor is awesome and the chef puts effort into presentation, but there's nothing totally exquisite about the food, and it can definitely get pricey. I do have to point out that the empanadas and the sauce that goes with it were superb, which push it up a star from 3 to 4. Prix fixe dinner with one drink after tax/gratuity was about $35 pp.
Regular dinners and one drink will run you about $10-15 more pp. -

We went here on a Thursday evening after work at about 5pm. They have a "special" appetizer, entree and open bar for an hour. However that menu is separate from the regular menu and u can only order certain drinks. I got sangria and I have to say it was very good. I'm not a sweet drink drinker but it was good. My coworkers got kiwi mojitos and they said they were really good.
For appetizers
Me: shrimp sticks w/ wasabi sauce -good but didn't taste the wasabi at all
Friends: one ordered beef empanadas she got chicken instead and nobody even asked if it was OK. I tasted them and they were good. typical Dominican seasoned so I was OK with that. the other girl ordered chicken quesadilla, quite a big portion for an appetizer she said it was good, i didn't taste it. The last girl ordered Caprese salad, which is fresh sliced mozzarella cheese with sliced tomatoes and basil. I tasted it and it was fine, if anyone can mess up a caprese salad then they must be a bad cook..lol
Entrees
Me: Churasco with shitake mushrooms and a basil sauce I asked for the sauce on the side. mashed potatoes and grilled veggies, green beans asparagus and zucchini. The steak was good the mushrooms were no existent the basil sauce was not good. How can basil sauce not be green? it was very flowery tasting and I was glad i asked for it on the side. the mashed potatoes were OK, but weren't hot enough. the veggies were really good, well seasoned and crisp. I like my veggies crisp and not mushy.
Friends all ordered the grilled salmon. One ordered Yuka fries and the rest ordered the mashed like I did. I tasted the yuka fries and they were good. They were seasoned with something but it wasn't adobo like one of the other reviewers stated. It wasn't bad at all. But i was a Lil tipsy so perhaps I was a bit hungry and my taste buds were off j/k. but seriously i would go back there just because it is close to my friends house and we were served right away. nobody else was in the place except for us, until we were leaving at about 8 one other couple came in. idk if it was worth 40 dollars a person. I think they should include a dessert to the "special" Thursday menu. We didn't drink too much to get our money worth. -

Once again I'm in between ratings. sigh. Oh wells, I'm feeling a little generous today ;-) and besides one of my closest friends loves this place so I'm giving it 4 stars.
Moving on and the story goes, a group of high school friends decided to meet up for dinner and drinks, so we came here. We got the pre-fix menu.
Altus Sampler Fam Style appetizer: Ribs were cold so I passed on those, Calamari was delish, Empanadas were ok, quesadilla was yummy, the pinchos looked weird so i passed on those too.
For main course I had the the crusted red snapper with yucca mashed which was the main attraction. It was really, really, good. Did I mention the mashed yucca was really good?
Dessert was good too specially the flan.
Service: the waiter and hostess were really nice and patient since a few of us were late but we were seated anyways although our party was incomplete. The manager or owner of the restaurant came over at the end to ask us how everything was. I thought this was nice.
Decor was very nice, on the elegant side for what you normally see in the area.
They had live music. It was a little loud but we didnt really mind. -

My friend and I was around the neighborhood and wanted to check this place out. The decor and atmosphere was nice. Looked pretty trendy in the area of Washington Heights. So we approached the hostess, while she was laying her head on the counter yawning. Wow, really? She didn't even see us, until one of the waiters nudged her. It wasn't busy on a Tuesday evening, so we were seated quickly. It was great spring weather, so we decided to sit outside.
Our waitress was friendly and courteous. I wanted to order iced tea, but they didn't have. My friend and I decided that we wanted to try the Pina Coladas and she told us they were out. Ok, fine. We decided to get frozen margaritas. She comes back and tells us, they're out of that too. So I asked about Daiquri's, and she said "no frozen drinks" are available right now. Wow, ok. "SO WHAT DO YOU HAVE AVAILABLE?" My friend got the mango mojito. Luckily, the bartender knew how to make a Malibu Bay Breeze even though it wasn't on the menu. For $10, I would think the drinks to be stronger, but alas it was kind of weak.
For starters, we wanted to get calamari, but guess what? Yes, you guessed right. They were out of that too! Well, I wasn't TOO surprised considering the fact their drinks were 'limited' We ended up ordering the quesadillas and yuca fries. Quesadillas were ok, not the best. Yuca fries were a bit hard to chew. I felt like I was giving my molars a workout, and the seasoning was straight up Adobo sprinkled on top.
Now on to entrees. My friend ordered a chicken caesar salad. I had the free range chicken with potato gratin. Probably the only thing that was actually good. My only gripe was that their menu selections were very limited. They either need to work on stocking up their bar and kitchen area correctly, or at least inform the customers on what is and isn't available on the menu to save us time when it comes to ordering. -

The food and atmosphere alone would have made Altus a five-star, in my opinion. However, there were some serious fails along the way that sadly dropped it to a 3. I would still go back, especially for happy hour, but I just can't call it perfect.
Starting with the positive (I'm a teacher... that's how we roll), the happy hour specials are great. Until 8:00, specialty drinks are $5 and beers are $3. I got the strawberry something, which was well made but a little too sweet (our waiter suggested the Altusini, but I can't handle anything blue). I would call the atmosphere relaxing-trendy, since the place was not packed on a Friday. The purplish lighting is really cool, and it counters the bright red of the Staples sign glowing right across the street (another teacher favorite).
The food is something else-- I got the Altus taquitos, which were lightly smoked (not cooked) salmon, sea bass, and ahi inside a little shell of fried taro root. Add in some greens and a spectacular sauce... to die for. The vegetable empadas and their sauce made my mouth burn a little bit, but they were perfectly fried.
So where did it go wrong? The restaurant did not have a lot of the things that we wanted to order-- different drinks, etc. could not be made. Also, we were asked to move to accommodate a party that was coming in. Granted, we had been there for a long time, but we were not offered anything in exchange for moving to the bar, which I think would have been classier (especially in this type of business). Finally, our waiter, as nice as he was, would not separate my check from the rest of the group when I had to leave a little bit early. Pretty unfortunate, since the food was so delicious!
This is the trendiest place I have seen in Washington Heights, so I would recommend it for anyone looking for a break from the casual Dominican joints. -

- The food here is good, you can tell the Chef was professionally trained
- The atmosphere and decor was awesome, as soon as you look at the outside you'll see what I'm talking about
- The drinks are hit or miss, sometimes they're good but sometimes they're too sweet you feel you'll get diabetes after having one
- The service is good here
- The restroom is always clean but just one for each gender
- Definitely one of the better places in Washington Heights -

Food and drinks were great but service was so slow. We waited an hour for our food and another 30 minutes for the desert menu only to be told the kitchen was closed!!! Valet is not free either...you have to pay 8 dollars...I will not be returning even though the food was delicious...it's not worth the wait....

I went here yesterday with my girlfriend for brunch. She has been here a few times for drinks. Read the reviews prior to coming and got to say I was not impressed. The decor.. Really what decor. tables are old, chair I sat on was broken and battered. But my biggest issue is service, the service was terrible.. Actually horrible. Waiter never checked in with us. when we asked for a drink and after waiting 30 minutes later he then told us The machine was broken. We then asked for a drink menu, again 30 minutes later no menu. Needless to say I did not leave a tip. The food was ok, I have eaten at better places, with better decor and MUCH better service. Would not recommend this place at all. I will not be going back.

Bueno, what can I say.
Stuck in the Mamajuana Cafe rut for so long, we decided to try this spot out for my birthday.
From the outside, the place was lovely. Bathed in beautiful blue lighting it really made us feel that we would partake in a wonderful dining experience. All for naught...
We were seated upstairs and we immediately noticed a few minor details that should have been a sign. The photos on the wall were all crooked, the wall sconces looked cramped and boy, the music was L-O-U-D!
To note: The items on the menu had wonderful descriptions. I really thought we would get another great uptown meal. (Fie on everyone who thinks there are no great restaurants in the Heights!)
And here's how it went down:
APPETIZERS:
- Two Spinach/Almond/Cheese empanadas:
They arrived and looked greasier than any empanada I could get at a cuchifrito truck. Ugh...they looked shiny! My husband gobbled his, and the vegetarian I am, dug into mine, only to find that it was CHICKEN! Yikes. Reorder! They brought back two more empanadas, just as greasy as before. But alas, they were pretty good, besides the dripping grease. Gourmet it was not.
- Tuna "Ceviche"
I live for ceviche. I breathe ceviche. Ceviche and me are homeboys! But THIS ceviche and me: Friends we are not.
This ceviche was not room temperature, it was warm. Like it had been sitting under the heat lamp. BLECH. And it was so salty, it was as if a whole packet of Sazon Goya had been dumped on it. So not impressive.
DINNER:
- Me: Salmon with some sort of Mash (and a random shrimp thrown in)
The presentation was sub-par. I don't know if Altus wants to be "anti-gourmet" but I had a good ol' American serving (i.e. enormous) of mashed potato-whatever. It was tasty, but I'm thinking that this giant sized serving was to soak up all of the mystery sauce on my salmon.
My poor little salmon... How wonderful it would have been to taste you...But alas, you were drowning in some salsa criolla and you did not survive. Not to mention that they cooked the hell out of you. Pobrecito.
Shout out to the shrimp for making an appearance, although I didn't quite understand why it was there.
- My husband: The rum soaked pork with moro
He liked it very much and ate to his heart's content. It smelled delicious but it looked very feo, i.e. ugly. It was a huge brown lump with a bone in it. Then a another brown lump of moro. Mixed all together it all looked very...BROWN.
DESSERT:
Oh Altus, how uninspiring... Molten cake? Apple Crisp? even Tres Leches (that I can get up the block at el Conde, el Malecon, and every other Dominican restaurant in the area?)
We settled on the Dulce de Leche ice cream...
My husband requested a candle in honor of little ol' me.
10 minutes pass. No ice cream. (Did I mention that music was LOUD)
15 minutes... Nada... Ask the waiter.
20 minutes into it. Ice cream and no candle...
Go back... Hooray, MELTED ice cream with a candle.
And you know what? I think it was Haagen Dazs.
DRINKS:
We settled on the up-sell to a pitcher of White Sangria.
It was watered down and there was hardly any fruit.
It gave us both a tremendous headache (cheap wine is my guess)
And finally, after a blaring Ana Gabriel ranchera, we decided to get the check and leave....of course, not without noticing that our jackets smelled like the kitchen. Sigh.
Altus Cafe: you get a thumbs down from me! -

Altus, I have to admit, you surprised me!
You are a welcome response to the lack of "high end" dining in Washington Heights. You don't rely on your innate Latinness to attract customers, sacrificing food quality and comfort in the experience. You may not have the most original creative design behind your restaurant, but you are a complete change from anything else in the neighborhood.
Your most important quality of note, is the wonderful food. I had the Pork entree with tostones and rice and beans, and my dinner partner had the Short ribs, with jalapeño corn bread. We shared the Hummus Appetizer, which was nothing to write home about, though priced appropriately. My pork was amazingly well cooked, falling easily off the bone with a delicious slightly sweet salsa topping. The Rice and beans were so mouthwatering that I filled up on them before I was able to finish my pork! The tostones were a bit bland and unnecessary to the dish. My partner's short ribs were lovely, also falling off the bone, but I did not sample much of the rest of his dish.
We greatly appreciated that our signature cocktails contained a fair amount of liquor, decent quality, and also an obvious effort into the creation (freshly muddled limes for the moijto, fresh orange juice for the margarita).
We were pleased enough with both your service (very attentive wait staff and bus boys), and food that we ordered dessert. We had the apple cobbler on the suggestion of the waiter. It was alright, not the best cobbler I've tasted, but the vanilla bean ice cream topping was to die for.
Overall, I find the perfect testament to your greatness being that your table capacity was filled to 75% in the middle of a snow storm! Our dinner started at the early bits of it, but even during the worst of the storm, people were filing in to partake of your atmosphere and fare. -

So, I am starving and driving in Washington Heights. My hunger seriously exacerbated by the fact that everywhere I look to eat doesn't allow your car inside, or worse yet, have a drive-thru. Ugh!! Having a car in the city sucks! I tried selling it on the corner of B'way and 181st. No go!
Anyway... I find a Parking lot on 184th and walk down a steep hill towards el Malecon steak house! As I am walking I notice Altus! Very cozy and unassuming. I look at the menu and their drinks alone were enough to force my entry!
Service was excellent from the moment we sat down to the moment we left.
The food was delicious beyond my wildest expectations, I mean, they do have a blown up portrait of some random dude on the walls... I wasn't expecting much! But wow!! The food was amazing, appetizers arrived quickly and were very decent. The wings come with dipping sauces, sophistication for the common wing! The calamari could have been a bit less chewy... But I need to stop being so critical! The drinks... Mango mojitos! Not very liquorie, for 10 bucks can I chick get a buzz? Had two... still nothing, but they do taste good. I had the ravioli which were tender and had tons of green stuff (I'm going to assume it's a basil type of a sauce) it was yummy! My husband and sister had the salmon. Both raved till the last bite. My little monster had the linguini and also said it was delish!
Dessert menu is a tad limited! But who cares? They serve Tres Leches cake which should suffice as the only dessert worth having on said menu! The cake was moist and filled with guava sauce, my son ate most of it. I wanted to commit murder. But hey he is after-all, just like his mom, taking ownership of the good things in life!
The only thing I did not like was the fact that it was very early still, we were seated before 6pm to add the gratuity to the check :0(
It was only 4 people. Is this the new trend? Anyway... Yeah. Gratuity was added automatically so my bill was just shy of 200.00 dollars.
The food was amazing, but expensive.
Go check it out! It's worth it. -

I have to admit this place is beautiful and about the only one of its kind in the neighborhood. Very trendy.
The food, although great looking, was a bit sub par. The sangria was well priced and very good. The appetizers (guac with pineapple and a butternut squash soup) and dessert (tres leches) were impressive.
My peeve was the entrees.
My friend got the fish special, I got the shrimp with black rice. Both her and my dish had far too much ginger. The ginger flavor was so overwhelming that it hid all the other flavors on the plate, which was a shame. From the wasabi mashed to the black rice with octopus, there was also far too much filler in the way of starch. The protein was good though and well done on both dishes.
The service was absolutely impressive. From both the servers to the bus staff. They were by far the most impressive group I've seen in a while.
I love the concept that they use for this restaurant, using all organic ingredients and the use of locally grown, kosher items made a great impression on me, but regardless of how it's grown or where it comes from, if you don't prepare it well, it will still fall flat.
I hope to one day stop over there again and see a more balanced flavor setup in regards to their entrees.Listed in: Eats

The food was good (4 stars), but overpriced (brought it to 3 stars). The waiter dropped it though - almost to the point of giving it one star. I was ready to order and was told by the waiter that he couldn't take my order because the seat I was in "has to order last at this table". When one person wasn't sure, the waiter walked away before I could ask about the specials. When he finally came back, taking my order last, he told me they didn't have what I wanted. I was then told he had to put the order in and "couldn't wait for me because another table was waiting to order". When we went to pay, we waited 15 minutes, and signaled to the waiter 3 times that we were ready. Finally, I got up and just walked it over. On the way out, I asked to speak to the manager on duty and was told that there was no manager or other person in charge that night.

Where should I start. Beautiful setting, great decorations- i mean, they really did try. AS far as service which is a key component,,,,,SUCKED ROYALLY. It was my girlfriends bday and a group of 8 of us made reservations here. We walked through the door and no one was there to sit us. We help ourselves to a large table and we ordered a few martinis and a glass of wine. Our drinks came 30 minutes later. After that we ordered appetizers and they took exactly 1 hour and 15 minutes. We where there for a little under an hour. Everyone was disappointed. We called the owner over and he kept dodging us. Finally we walk up to him and ask if we can speak to him regarding poor service. he is extremely arrogant and he was just shaking his head as if we were boring him. WE ARE NEVER GOING HERE AGAIN!! I was embarrassed that i even suggested this place.

I recently went to Altus for a late dinner with friends. Food was great...the salmon is to die for along with the altustini. Great drink. What really sold me on this place was the atmosphere and the great hookah. They place an apple at the top where the tobacco is burning. Why I don't know but it makes it so much smoother and enjoyable. Good times can't wait to go back.

This trendy Latin restaurant/bar had a delicious $10 margarita, and the football game on for me on a Sunday night. I would take a date here, but ask them to lower the music a bit if there is no dancing. It was kind of loud for dinner. It must be popping on the weekends, its a very slick looking place.

Let's just say it depends what time you go? my husband and I first experience was great. We went for the sunday brunch and enjoyed everything from the food to the service. There is a time limit on how long you can dine at the table for brunch. Unfortunately when we went for dinner we were disappointed that quite a few items we ordered from the menu were not available. Our waiter Carlos did a good job but it's not cool having to change your selections several times. The restaurant needs to address that. I'm willing to try one more time; maybe lunch

Sleek decor, interesting menu, good fresh food, friendly service sums up what Altus is. The menu is Dominican inspired but more fusion-y and gourmet than just another roasted chicken/plantains/rice place we have a million of already in the neighborhood. I had the shrimp with forbidden rice entree and one of the ceviche appetizers. Both were great! The menu has something for everyone and a lot of seafood to choose from. This is a legitimately great addition to the lacking Washington Heights eating scene and I will defnitely be back.

Atlus's outside seating is surprisingly appealing. Its clean white decor and clear tall windows seem a little out of place in this neighborhood, but they get an A for executing a lovely BRUNCH!
Whether on a date, with family, or the newspaper (of course, that was me today) this place is GREAT! The Brunch Pre-Fixe is affordable, 20$ for and App., entrée and café, and it includes UNLIMITTED MIMOSAS! The menu has a fusion of Brunch classics with a Dominican twist.
I started with the Avocado Salad, the vegis were fresh and they were not stingy with the avocado! Then I had the Eggs Benedict without the chorizo. Instead of the typical English muffin it is served on corn bread, which was a delightful surprise. The sweetness of the corn bread complimented the Aji Hollandaise perfectly. The onions where a little overwhelmed with BBQ Sauce, I would've been ok without them. The corn bread was a little burned on top but it didn't take away from its yummyness! The staff is very attentive and full of personality.
You get three choices of mimosas, Guava, Orange and Mango. I wasn't a fan of the Guava and Mango flavors. I tried one of each and I'm pretty sure they are premade, making the champagne flat. But by the 3rd one you can't really tell! I will stick with the classic mimosas next time.
This place exceeded my expectations specially if you are looking for more than the typical mangu con fried salami for breakfast. I'm glad that the Heights is finally stepping up they're dinning game.
