Another great Eugene park, with "tame" areas, and more natural ones. There are some paved paths (easily wheelchair accessible), which join to the bike paths that run for miles along the river. There are lots of bark paths throughout, and with some effort, many of them are probably wheelchair accessible, too.
Near the parking lots, you'll find 2 ponds with flow-through from the river. This is where the paved paths are. The ponds have lots of ducks, and a little island in the middle of one frequently has a great blue heron. Some folks fish in the stream that flows into them. This section of the park has well-kept lawns and there are rec. shelters. The 3 pics that are here so far all show this area.
One fun & educational feature starts there: A large sphere representing the sun begins a scale model of the solar system. At various places you find the planets, all to scale. Signs at each place show where all the planets are located. Very cool to see how big/small the planets are, and how far out from the sun they are.
The more natural areas are woodsy, with spots that go up to the river. I've seen heron & osprey nests there. At the far end of the park is an area dedicated to the Native American tribes of the area. It has stones telling bits of the culture. Less foot traffic there, because it's pretty far from the parking lot.
Other features are a dog park, community gardens, a small planetarium/science center, and other things. -

This park is pretty much the centerpiece of the river trail system in Eugene. Whether you start there or just end up passing through it's pretty awesome and worth checking out if you've never been.
Once spring and summer come around there are all kinds of actives throughout the park.
Get out of the house and go explore the park and bike paths all around it.
Oh yeah if you've got kids(or like to bird watch) they will probably love the geese and ducks. -

I've fallen in love and I can't get up. I've been here two days in a row and I still haven't seen everything. You must stop here if you are anywhere close to eugene. Well marked trails, beautiful scenery, friendly peeps, bridges and if that's not enough a great lazy river for tubing. I want to apply to oregon state just for their park. Things to know: I didn't see any vending so pack it in. There is a great fountain for little kids so bring a change of clothes. One circle from bridge to bridge is about two miles so keep an eye on maps as your going.

Eugene has a lot of great parks but when I think of the best one in town Alton Baker Park tops on the list. The park is so big and centrally located that it is easily accessible by everyone for better or worse.
My top five reasons for liking this park are in order:
(1) the Pre Trail is a great place to run, walk or stroll and connects nicely to the waterfront bikepaths
(2) Cuthbert amphitheater is a great outdoor music venue
(3) the Defazio Bridge is the best designed pedestrian bridge in the area
(4) Duck pond is cool if slightly disgusting with canoe rentals to check out the rest of the park
(5) lots of picnic tables and green space to have a picnic or celebrate a holiday
