Dear White People: DON'T PANIC!
Ok, now that that's out of the way, let's talk about this awesome little market.
Produce: cheap and awesome. 5 artichokes for a buck at the moment. and they're huge globe artichokes. Like any other ethnic market, stuff can turn kind of quickly,. but that's the price you pay for incredibly cheap produce.
Breads and such: awesome. All kinds of middle eastern ethnic breads fo a good price.
Dairy: Holy hand grenades Batman! Ok, besides the metric ton of yogurt, there's the unsalted butter (2lbs. for $5 which is really good actually. Either Alta Dena or Challenge) There's all kinds of cheese. Two of my favorites are the danish feta in the little pouches and the quarter wheels of danish blue cheese. Did I mention that this is the only retail place i've found that actually sells manufactures cream? Yeah, half gallons of it. (FYI: Manufactures cream is a fattier version of heavy whipping cream [which they sell by the quart btw]. Use it in making super premium ice cream. TRUST ME)
Meats: Not bad at all. All Halal meats, and they have New Zealand Lamb for a nice price here. Shoot, want a whole lamb? No problem. They'll even cut the bugger up for you no charge. Chicken is a good deal too.
Checkers: every last one of these ladies is amazingly nice. I've never, ever, ever had a bad experience with them. Men, if you're not familiar with the culture, women aren't supposed to have physical contact with men that aren't husbands or I think immediately family. Don't quote me on that last part, but be aware of it and try to shy away from physical contact with them out of respect for their culture. Just saying.
The not so great: to be honest, there's a few things that kind of suck, but they're not deal breakers. Parking, small, tight lot with crazy drivers. Think offensively here. Also, the market can get quite crowded and has smaller aisles, so be prepared to get creative with your movements. Honestly, that's half the fun though.
Seriously, if you've never been, go. It's worth the trip just for the experience. -

quick summary: go to King Market on Magnolia and Cerritos in Anaheim - far cheaper and without the terrible attitude from the staff. there was some issue in the past about King Market passing off non-halal meat as halal but i understand that has been resolved.
my family has been shopping at halal markets all of our lives so i am not unused to seeing and experiencing shitty arab service. but what happened last week at this market was the WORST WORST WORST.
the manager Osama was extremely condescending and uncooperative about an issue with his staff. if you come here and are express discontent about being receiving poor service, this little piece of #&*$ will come running over, ask if YOU have a problem, then try to talk over you after you get about 3 words out of your mouth about what happened.
and the prices at this store are nothing special - king market down the street is much cheaper and after this incident, i will NEVER be going back and will be telling all my friends and family to do the same. -

I've been looking for a place where I can get lamb meat.
I've found it. Lamb shanks, Lamb shoulder, Ground lamb, Lamb Chops.
First time at an middle eastern market and I was like a kid in a candy store. Lot's of good ingredients. Aside from that, their produce section was very extensive and fresh (cheap too)
Only problem was the parking. Small spaces plus lots of vehicles equals headache. -

Irvine, CA
A great neighborhood ethnic/Ara/Middle Eastern market. Wow, what a mouthful! Lol.
Altayebat has a great selection of fresh produce which makes the trip from Irvine down to Brookhurst/Anaheim worth it. And their Persian cucumbers are actually fresh and crisp, unlike of the the Persian markets that I've been to. Irony. Their breads are fresh, at the least the Arabic/Pita bread and I'm sure the others as well. They have a vast selection of olive oils, cheeses, teas and spices. The meat section does smell a little, but don't get pushed out of shape. Prices are very reasonable and won't break the bank. The aisles are narrow, but the customers are cool and people don't seem to give you a hard time like other ethnic markets I've been to. The staff for the most part is ok, a weekend course in customer service wouldn't hurt though. Please be cautious in the parking lot, and have lots lots and lots of patience!!! Go early! Always good to support local businesses and a great asset to the city of Anaheim. Enjoy! -

This place has 3 main sections.
1. Meat department. The have a number system that is used only when busy and sometimes even if it is busy it wont be used. It's pretty hard explaining the type of steak and ground beef you want to somebody who is not Middle Eastern, and you will rarely get the meat you want, in the cut and size you want....
2. Produce section. Very small, barely room enough for 2 people to walk thru without bumping into each other. The prices on the produce are pretty cheap, but I have seen lower prices elsewhere. You need to dig to get the good quality produce. It won't last more than 2 days either way.
3. Grocery department. Mostly Middle Eastern and some dollar items for $5.
Parking can be a hassle and you have to be very patient with other people pulling out of their parking spaces. Yes they are driving cars but they seem to drive them like semi trucks... slowly... slowly... slowly...opss you hit the car next to you... hurry up n leave! -

Produce is plentiful, in some cases you sacrifice freshness and logevity for price, sometimes you feel like you got a steal, other times, you wish you had gone to a fresher produce market.
Onions are sometimes half rotten or mildewed, and stink strongly of sweaty socks or BO (usually happens when they are old and stored improperly) so you might have to dig through them. Lemons are sometimes fermenting in the bin. Anything that has fruit flies buzzing around it is a pass. I recently bought iceberg lettuce which reeked of insecticide once I opened it, and had to toss it.
They occasionally have the killer deal on big navel oranges (5lbs for 1$), and have a decent selection of dry goods and spices.
I think they should improve quality and raise prices a little, otherwise, I'm going elsewhere in the future.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Suck it Bristol Farms!
This place has quail. Sweet, little baby birds for $5.99 a six pack. That's a BUCK PER QUAIL! Walk into Bristol Farms and ask them how much quail you can get for a dollar and watch them laugh and laugh at your gullible ass for even walking through the door.
Lamb, too. Lamb that is half the price of anywhere else. And not just their pricey, yet sexy legs, but shanks, shoulders, shins, feet, necks, tongues, livers, and heads. Lamb SHOULDER, people! A big, slow-cooked lamb roast that costs six bucks instead of twenty-six.
Very cheap, totally non-manky produce too. I did the math and we go through 40-60 bananas a month and I don't even eat the damn things. 4 pounds for a buck is pretty sweet. That pita bread that's $3-4 at Ralphs? 99 cents here. Big-ass cans of fava and other assorted beans for around a buck each, cheap cheese, tubs of yoghurt, and gallon jugs of olive oil for $15.
We're on meal four from this place and I only spent $20 yesterday. I have nothing witty to say to top that. -
Review from Hazel Q.
My main use for produce is testing my gag reflex by investigating where that stench is coming from in the refrigerator, all the while thinking "Please don't have maggots. Please don't have maggots. Please don't have maggots." However, if I were to have other uses, or be jonesing for a grapefruit the size of my head I'd head over the Altayebat Market.
Cheap, cheap, cheap. Well, inexpensive anyway. Cheap impliess their stuff is no good, when in fact it's all great - it just costs roughly half of what Ralphs charges, and even cheaper than Sinbad Ranch, down the street.
I should, however, come here more often to buy feta cheese, pita bread, imported chocolate and my favorite yogurt drink that grosses out most people I know - Ayran. Those are all things that won't attract maggots in my refrigerator. Things I can handle.
However, they do have other things I can't handle here. Such as, every. single. part. of a lamb. Even the brain. And that smell that comes with small markets with butcher counters. Ugh. That smell. Another tough thing to handle, the crazy parking lot with some curb parking, and some regular parking and people coming and going and waiting for spots and honking horns and road rage FTW.
Service is more-or-less what you'd expect from a middle-eastern market, although slightly better than some I've been to - especially Sinbad Ranch. You'll get a little eye contact, a point, and a grunt at least when you ask where the Ayran is, as opposed to being completely ignored.
I'd be here all the time if I learned how to use fresh produce properly.
Thumbs Up:
-Cheap!
-Imported chocolates.
-Ayran. Salty, salty Ayran.
-Passable service.
Thumbs Down:
-Road rage x1000.
-Smelly smells.Listed in: Orange County Cheap Eats, Mediterreanean and Middle…

I just got a trip to another country and a bundle of veggies for under $10! Score!!!
This place is great. My mom started coming here in my late teen's. I've joined the ranks. (stinks when mom and dad stop paying for your groceries. Yeah, so I got married. And?)
I kinda like the scrounging for a parking spot, a cart and a spot to just park the afore mentioned hard to get cart in the store. Small aisles packed with goodies. Produce, some I know and some I have no clue about. One thing I'm sure about? It's dirt cheap.
I've always just ran in for veggies but I'm seeing Richard D's review and now I'm going back for Lamb.
They have really good nut mixes too in bins toward the front. The halava is really good too. -

Anaheim, CA
Unlike the majority of my reviews, this will be short and to the point.
The produce here is amazing cheap and with good reason. The quality is typical of ethnic markets, unattractive and with a lot of bruising. The taste however, is on par with most American supermarkets, but at a much lower price. You can walk away with a week's worth of produce for less than ten dollars.
I love to buy meat here. I think the last time I was here, a pound of ground beef with 15% fat was $1.50. Amazing right?
They also have a delicious selection of baked goods and cheeses. AND nuts here are super cheap. I like to buy bags of dry, unsalted almonds as a snack. I would recommend buying stuff from the edges of the store and avoiding the stuff in the middle, which has likely been sitting there for a long time. This is a place to buy fresh produce, meat, dairy, and nuts.
BUT parking is a bitch. They have the smallest lot ever. Please don't bring your Chevy suburban here. It won't fit. And you will inconvenience many people.
This grocery store is small and best if you're already in the area. It is not worth driving out of your way unless you need something specifically Middle Eastern. -

The good: Excellent prices on vegetables. Even better, the spices for your bbq and cooking needs are like 3 spice packets for $1. They have good ground lamb for kebabs. Your basic ingredient essentials are here.
The bad: Parking is sometimes difficult, and you may have to wait around for a shopping cart (you'll need one!). -

This is a small neighborhood, ethnic market in Anaheim. I usually go there to buy pita breads. It's insanely cheap! Bag of 5 or 6 yummy pitas are only like 69 cents. Yes, cents not dollars. Sometimes they have a sale and you can get 3 bags for a $1. What a deal!
Last time I was there in early December 08, I happened to pass a small table that had bags of mini baguettes. Each bag contained 2 baguettes and the sign said 2 for $1. Again, I thought what a deal and grabbed a bag. When I got to the check out, the charge was only 50 cents! The sign meant 2 bags, not two baguettes as I assumed. Even better! The baguettes were super tasty and now hubby only wants those baugettes for making garlic bread and sandwiches. He knows what he likes.
Now the negatives:
- The parking is difficult unless you go super early in the morning.
- Must check expiration dates on all products you buy.
- Not the most cleanest market.
- Very little room to maneuver a shopping cart.
I haven't tried any of their fruits or produce since I always get them at Korean market (Arirang). They seem to have the freshest and cheapest fruits and veggies. -

CHEAP PRODUCE!
My mom sent me out to buy a vegetable while she was cooking. She specifically told me to go to this place. No wonder why, because I bought a whole plasticbag-full of baby bok choy and it was less than $0.80! I felt bad so I went back to grab a bag of spinach (measuring about the size of a mini pillow!) which still altogether cost me around $4.00! I felt so proud of myself and when I got home, I told this story to my mom, my dad, my brother, and my sister too. -

Altayebat Market is a good ethnic-produce-and-meat market. The butcher shop offers excellent cuts of meats and the prices are reasonable. The fruits and vegetables are fresh and super cheap. I am so impressed by this market's good produce. Altayebat is as Hazel says, "cheap, cheap, cheap." I came out with three bags of fruit and veggies and pita bread, all under $11. I never come out of Trader Joes without spending $45 on veggies. Altayebat is fantastic and their produce are fresh and good. This middle eastern market is now my favorite place to shop for fruits 'n veggies, middle east products and meats. If you live on a budget (don't we all), consider this market for your shopping and explore.

Still a consistent 5 star experience since I've discovered this market over 2 months ago. I've been coming here at least once a week to fulfill my halal food needs!
The meats are always fresh and high quality. I adore their marinated chicken tray. You get so much for just about $5! I get that tray of marinated chicken and sautee it in olive oil until cooked, then pop it in the oven with chopped up white potatoes and onions and let it bake for about 20 mins on 300 degrees.
Wonderful and easy dish! Eat it with some naan bread or rice with garlic sauce ,hot sauce AND soy sauce...*mouth drools*
Produce prices and freshness hasn't let me down. I love the 9 large cucumbers for 99 cents although make sure you can eat it quickly because it tends to get soft fast! Also 4 lettuce heads for $1, 9 or 10 lemons for $1, garlic spread for $3, opo for 69 cents a pound, etc etc etc!
I've visited a handful of similar markets within Westminster, Garden Grove & even up to Artesia. This is my favorite one out of all.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Anaheim, CA
Ditto on what the other reviews have said.
I've been going Altayebat for many years and they were always the least unfriendly of the Arab markets in the area, but lately they have been even friendlier. A few weeks ago the Owner asked me if I was finding every thing OK and spent some time answering many pent up questions I had. He was very nice and I learned a lot. He asked "You have Mediterraneans in your family ?" "no I just like to eat" On my next vist after that I had a woman customer in robes and hijab engaged me in conversation on the quality of bottled lemon juice and Farika. I was stunned and maybe a little aroused. Another week later the woman cashier, who up till then had only viewed me with pursed lips started talking to me about having to get a car for her collage age child "they have to work to have a car, and have to have a car to work and it just keeps coming more and more" "That's because we live in the land of the free" I said, then " I think we'd all be better off living in a small village in the mountains". " A very small village, very high up" she replied as I walked out the door. Be still my beating heart! A conversation, I didn't feel half as much the infidel I usually do.
The store in general is cleaner and better smelling so they must be trying.
These Arab markets are a great place to get good cheap produce (a pillow size bag of baby spinach for $3.50, I put it in everything now) , Health food type stuff cheap, check out the grains and beans, yogurt and things like the pomegranate syrup ( all pomegranate, no added sugar) it's great in green ice tea.
Yes the parking is bad, just don't go on the weekend.
And if you want the full-on bizarre bazaar go hit Super King on the Weekend -

This was one of the first markets I went to in Anaheim. I really liked it because all the produce was very fresh and very affordable. The tea selection was not bad could be better. What really makes it good is its affordable. From bread to meat everything is very high quality and priced very well. I really recommend this market. I have tried a few other markets in the area and this one is by far the best. Its usually always crowded also which is a good thing.

I can't stay away from this place. I've stopped buying the single packages of basturma and just started buying the large pieces. And if your a fan of blue cheese the prices here are so cheap they are pretty much giving it away.

Three words: saffron ice cream. Yes this is a great market and I'm sure that if I actually cooked anything substantial I'd be impressed with the variety of hard to find ingredients stocking the shelves. But that's not going to happen so it's all about the ice cream.

I recently took a Persian cooking class with Hipcooks (see review) and wanted to recreate some of the dishes that I made during the class. I haven't had much exposure to Middle Eastern foods so I wasn't sure where I could procure some of the ingredients.. (I was looking for pomegranate molasses, barberries, and dried roses). I remembered seeing a Middle Eastern Market on Brookhurst Blvd. in Anaheim so I decided to go back to the general vicinity and lo and behold there it was! It was very busy but I was able to maneuver my way in and out of the aisles, just picking up stuff to read the labels and smelling ingredients (this is one of my favorite things to do in any grocery store, especially ethnic ones). They have a Halal meats counter and a whole shelf of spices and grains. Everyone is really helpful and some of the more obscure ingredients have little signs with the names and uses. It is also very inexpensive.. $7.99 for a fairly large container of saffron? Woo hoo! I only went in to get 2-3 items but came out with a whole basketful of stuff. I'll definitely be coming here more often.

Great place. It's one of the only places to find things like fennel and celery root --and at good prices. The vegetables are always "interesting." Check for freshness, but sometimes you can find 3 pounds of baby spinach for $1.99. The dairy selection is good and cheaper than King. They have righteous prices on Altadena products, for example two quarts of half and half for $2.00. Some brand of lebne is always on sale. Use lebne instead of yogurt sometime for Tdasiki or raita. Their staples such as dried and canned beans are the lowest prices you'll find. They also have an extensive spice section including some hard to find Pakistani and Indian mixes. We find the ground lamb to be a little fattier than at KIng's. Look over the cheese selection: the Rummi from Egypt has a nutty flavor reminiscent of Parmesan. Until recently they had Harris Ranch beef only. We go once a week. Two cautions: park next door at the bar to avoid erratic drivers and do NOT use a cart. Use the hand basket. My wife still marvels at the time they had cucumbers 31 for $1.00.
