Ok, this is the follow up to my Eaton Canyon Golf Course review (sister golf course).  Today was the first time I played this course.  I like it just as much as Eaton Canyon.  It's the same, only different.  It appears to be less crowded than Eaton Cyn. Same prices and run by DC Golf.  This is an easier course than Eaton Canyon.  The fairways are wide open, not to many hazards, including trees.  Flat course and I think it's slightly better maintained that Eaton Cyn.  The bar is bigger and better than Eaton.  Either course Is great for the price.  I will be back!

As of May 9 2012 they still don't have any plans to repair the fence damaged in the winds 6 months ago.  So the driving range is restricted to 150 yards.  The course is fine and the staff is friendly.

Review for the practice area only - driving range fences sustained serious damage during the 2011 windstorm so they currently do not allow woods and you can only hit irons to 150 yards max.  Chipping area is big, though no bunker practice area.  Putting green is huge, lots of holes, well maintained.  The pro shop said there's no timetable yet regarding when the range fences are going to be repaired.

I would like to mention that I have only used the driving range and putting green, not the actual course.

The people were in the pro shop were extremely helpful and processed our living social deal really quickly. We got a deal of $29 for $78 worth of driving range balls.

I've been a couple times now to work on my swing. I like the driving range because they use actual grass and not the mats. Both times I went were on a Saturday morning and I didn't have to wait at all to get a spot. The people there are fairly friendly as well.

The putting green had quite a few holes. Could be a little more challenging but I'm just being picky.

Overall it's a great place to go and just relax for a couple of hours, kick back, work on your swing with a couple buddies. I docked the 1 star because it has an older feel to it in terms of the buildings and not very modern/sleek.

Great course, great driving range.  MORE IMPORTANTLY, if you're looking for golf lessons, Kevin Erdman and Courtney Erdman are both excellent instructors.  After six lessons with Kevin, at the most reasonable lesson price you'll find in SoCal, I gained more confidence, a smoother stroke, and a spectacular short game.  I wish I could pay him to walk the courses with me, he gets me to play that well.  Try them to gain an edge on your saturday golf group and you won't be disappointed.

I'm hesitant to write a review for Altadena b/c I love it so much - I wouldn't want hordes of Yelpers to start clogging the fairways!  But seeing as there are *so many* golf reviews, I think I'm safe ;)

Altadena is a straightforward 9-hole golf course tucked away in Altadena, right under the towering San Gabriel mountains.  You would be hard-pressed to find such a great combo of wonderful views, ease of access, and just general chilled-out-edness in ANY golf course in the Southland.

A weekday round (which I enjoyed this morning) will set you back a whopping $13.50 (ha!), and unlike some other LA area courses, if there is no-one around when you check in, they'll just let you on your merry way instead of insisting you play with whoever shows up 15, or even 30 minutes later.  And yes, I'm talking about YOU Roosevelt GC!

Another major plus with Altadena is the natural grass driving range, a real rarity around here.  Strangely, this seems to be more crowded than the course most of the time.

There is your typical public course canteen behind the 9th green, and they must go through oodles of beer given that you can count on at least a dozen golfers sucking down pitchers, no matter what the time of day.  Can't blame 'em, there's just something about this course that gets you relaxed, which is of course why you play golf in the first place, right?

I love playing this golf course.  One it is close to my work.  I like to practice here on the driving range after work.  They have grass tees on the driving range.  I hate hitting off mats.  Once in a while, you are hitting off the mats.  The funny thing they have here is that there is an old pickup truck on the driving range with a big bulls eye on the side.   I love trying to hit the pickup truck with my drives on the range.  They have a great separate area to practice chipping/pitching as well as bunker practice.

Second, this is a 9 hole golf course.  Sometimes I feel like playing but don't want to spend 6 - 8 hours playing golf.  Sometimes it can play slow here on the weekends (about 3 hours for 9 holes).  But there are several holes where you can grip it and rip it.  The teeing area are grass tees.  Course for 9 holes is about 3000 yards.  A little bigger than your usual executive course.  Price is reasonable about $13 - $17 for green fees.  Course is beginner friendly.  No water here just lots of trees and OB on some holes.  Course condtions are usually average for a city course.

This is one of my favorite courses to play.

We had a long day planned.....a little rallying on the tennis courts followed by putting here.....followed by a little hike to see the waterfalls.....

Well as far as the putting here goes.....I thought it was challenging......flat putting greens a little boring and easy......but when it's sloped....you can practice reading the green....anything to improve your skills here will improve your game big time....putting definitely makes or breaks your game......

It's a nice place to practice because they have grass tees! Woo hoo! Every day not just the weekdays. I have never seen any synthetic mats here! There's also a practice chipping green but the grass there is never mowed so you're practicing on fairway, first cut rough high grass. So that's not good. It can get a little crowded in the afternoon or also on the weekends. You may have to wait a while in order to get a spot here. The practice putting green is nice and undulating and cut well too.

The course is a medium length course, there are a lot of short par fours, each just over 300 yards, a couple of par 3, #3 at 160 yards and #5 at 180 yards. There's one par five. It's not an immaculate looking golf course, nor is it a monster. But it's definitely not a pitch and putt. It's a good challenge and it's cheap with twilight prices under $15. So if you can't wait at Griffith Park or at Santa Anita; or if Scholl Canyon is not enough challenge for you, or if Angeles National is too much a challenge, go to Altadena.

Well lets start with the good:

GRASS DRIVING RANGE. Every day of the week, not just Tuesday's like Brookside, and not beat up dirt that passes for grass - its green and luscious. That being said the 20 spot range is packed every afternoon after work and definitely on the weekend. That destroys the grass, but they move the blocks everyday so if you've got bad grass one day, just come back the next and it'll be perfect.

MOUNTAIN VIEWS. The course is fantastic to walk, just under 3000 yards and its not executive. The afternoon sun banks of the mountains perfectly for a wonderful view that every city dweller needs to enjoy every once in awhile.

DECENT FEES. $8 large buckets and sub $15 weekday rounds are great on the budget and even if you're not walking you're certainly not paying $20 something cart fees.

I prefer this course to Eaton canyon because its almost always in better condition and the staff aren't assholes. It seems whenever I go to EC I'm being granted some special opportunity to play this muni county course...sooo not the right attitude for any course let alone the sub $20 course. Altadena on the other hand has a much more relaxed atmosphere where the regulars get a handshake from each of the starter's and there's a much better vibe.

I also really like the veranda (outdoor patio) here in the afternoon and its a fantastic spot to catch a brew or mixed drink after a round.

This course is a municipal course but you can count on green fairways with few brown spots (definitely not in the landing areas) and well maintained greens. They cut greens 3-4x a week and the course plays much better on one of those days as they can get bumpy with the crappy golfer's footprints all over the cup.

Also to anyone who says this course is too easy  - try making birdie on number 9 - a 440yd uphill dogleg left nightmare for anybody who doesn't drive it super far. the green is raised a considerable amount so you can't run anything up short -its all carry. All in all it poses a very good challenge for your local practice course where they can without a doubt get you on in 30 minutes or less on any weekday and 99% of the time you'll be first up in as fast as you can get to the tee.

Nice, convenient golf course near Pasadena in a beautiful setting.  I have gone to driving range here (grass - oh heck yeah...none of that artificial crap) and played a round of nine.  The super twilight during the week is great - after 6, its only 7.50 to walk nine holes!  So awesome.  The greens are amazing, and the rest of the course is nice, too.

One weird thing though...well two.  I guess after 6 its a free for all, so these dudes cut in front of me and were holding me up.  So lame, but eventually a guy came around and starting pull all of the flags on the holes I was playing!  What the frick?  You can't give me 10 minutes?  I paid to play, sucka!  Anyways, I made him wait for one putt...an 8 footer for par - and sunk it.  Elicited a "nice putt" which may have made it worth the inconvenience : )

A great place for beginners to try a long course.  Very wide open, with no water hazards.    It's a regulation 9 hole course which makes it great for days when you don't have the time or energy for 18.   It's also nice too walk, as it's very flat.    The greens are usually in pretty good shape, and the staff is always friendly.   I also recommend the Eaton Canyon course, which is this sister facility to this course.  It's a little hillier, but also one stroke shorter.

beautiful setting, easy to pay + play.

put down my 12.50 for twilight fee on monday @ 5:00, was sippin' beer by 6:40

definitely a great 9-hole course if you're working on your driver and mid-fairway placement to the green... it's flat enough to walk and a good workout, but i'd probably opt for a cart next time as the group behind me caught up quickly in their cart -- which added pressure to the walking.

next time will tee off in the early morning b4 work with a buddy so we can split the cart fee...

As long as you aren't in a hurry this place rocks. I get breakfast here from time to time even when I'm not hitting the links.  I usually get the long drive. You get 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, and 2 pieces of some kind of breakfast meat for pretty cheap. YUM!!!!  I also like the lack of course pro's that drive around on the course. I love messing around in the golf carts when I am out on the course. sometimes after it rains I drive the cart super fast and then slam on the breaks, spin the wheels really fast, and then the cart spins around in circles. SO MUCH FUN!!!

haven't played the course here yet but we do commute a crazy distance just to go driving here.

at first, it may seem ghetto with a truck and a target painted on it in the middle of the range, but after a while you'll appreciate the beauty of this place.

this is all i am allowed to say.

    **** UPDATE 11/15/07 ****
Finally played the course.  Even though some of the greens are poorly maintained, I like it.

A great neighborhood golf course.  Most friends whom I've introduced to this golf course didn't even know it was there.  I like how it's in a quiet residential area.  A lot of golf courses are built near noisy, undesireable areas like train tracks or even near a freeway.  Not this place.  If you make a bad swing, you're off by yourself taking a long walk, but it's quiet, in a good way.  Most people have already described the layout, but I think it's worth noting that one of the girls in the pro shop is qualifying for the LPGA tour, and she hits it a mile.  There was even an article about her in Pasadena Star.  Breakfast at the small restaurant is good and the service is always friendly.

I like this place.  One of my favorite executive 9 hole courses.  Great scenery around and not a lot of traffic noise.  Pretty quick to get on and a round is always under 15 bucks, if you do twilight times, it is more like 10 bucks.  Nice real grass driving range too.

it is a city-run course so don't expect immaculate fairways and top notch ammenities. but for what its worth, altadena is a good little course. easy layout is enough to inspire confidence in the casual duffer or somebody who is trying to re-tune their game.

beware the 2-tiered green on #5. don't leave it short!

Altadena Golf Course is a Par 35 9 Hole Regulation Golf Course operated by LA County and managed by DC Golf. The course is mostly flat and a short course with some long Par 4 holes with wide and straight fairways in the course, and it measures almost 3000 yards off the blue tees. The driving range mostly uses grass most of the time, but most of the time, the grass in the range is poorly maintained, and some tees are mostly all dirt you are hitting off of, it is $8 for a large bucket, also the course has a practice chipping green, a large putting green, and a practice bunker seperated from the chipping and putting green. The green fees are $18 on weekend/holidays, $14 on weekdays, around $12 twlight, around $7 for a cart, and $5 for juniors. It is a fun course for everyone, it will give experience for a beginner to play a regulation long course, and a practice from the challanging regulation courses for adavanced players. The course is decently maintained, but when I first played there, all the greens were just newly aerated, but the fairways are acually pretty good when I played there, but most of the time, the course is poorly maintained with the fairways bad, and some of the greens poorly maintained, but some of them are really slopey.
