Review from Chihiro S.

Doctors and staff really care your pet's wellbeing. My cat swallowed a hair tie, and Dr. Henderson performed emergency surgery. Since the surgery was major and performed on Friday, my cat had to stay over the weekend. Dr. Henderson even called me on Saturday to let me know how my cat was doing, and it was her day off! When I went in to see my cat on Monday (he was released on Tuesday), one of the staff told me that he held a paper tray with wet food inside of the cone until my cat ate a little. I was really thankful that the staff was taking time to make sure my cat was eating.
Other 2 vets I went to failed to diagnose it correctly, but Dr. Henderson knew what was going on right away. It's over 1-1/2 years ago and my cat is healthier than ever. -

Hmmm...where do I start. I took my new puppy in back in November 2010 for his first exam and set of immunizations. The vet that was assigned to us definitely seemed like she enjoyed the company of animals over people, either that or she was not a morning person.
I informed her that the breeder's vet discovered my dog's cleft palate recently, and I wanted her to take a look at it and give me advice on whether I should have it fixed or not. She took a tongue depressor and forcefully pried his mouth open, and it was obvious my dog was not enjoying that. She literally took a look for about one second, and then didn't say anything. I then asked her, "what does it look like, and is it worth fixing?" She hesitated for a minute, thinking of what to say, and then replies that it's more narrow than wide and that it would be an easy fix.
Well, then they sell us this "puppy package," which includes all of the immunizations a puppy needs the first year and a couple of doctor visits. Then the tech explains that it also includes the neutering, and all I would have to do is call to schedule the appt. when it's time. At the time I thought it was a great deal, only because it included the neutering. A few months go by and I schedule my appt. only to find that they are going to charge me $210 to neuter him! I explained that I had the puppy package, and the person I spoke to on the phone said it did not include the neutering. I told her that I wanted to speak to the vet, and she said she was busy. Then I proceeded to let her know that if the vet cared enough to speak to me, then she will call. I never received that call.
The point of the story is the fact that they are merely a business and could care less about customer service. They did not even offer to accommodate me at all, and I wasn't asking for a free surgery, and God knows I wouldn't want them to handle my dog after the way they treated me.
Another reason why this place is not worth going to, is because I think they are not always truthful. I took my dog to another vet, told him about the cleft palate, and he attempted to open his mouth, but my dog wasn't having it. So the vet said he didn't want to pry his mouth open because he could end up hurting him. I really appreciated his actions because he actually expressed his care and concern for him, unlike the female vet from Alta Rancho. We ended up sedating him for a short period of time, and the vet along with myself discovered that my dog didn't even have a cleft palate!!! So I'm pretty sure the vet from Alta Rancho lied about seeing a cleft palate, maybe just to do surgery and get my money, who knows.
I would advise not to go there. -

Drs. Shufer and Henderson are the best veterinarians we have found. We only take our pets (2 dogs and a cat) to other doctors when we aren't able to make the trip to see them. They are extremely talented and knowledgeable vets; have a friendly and skilled team; and genuinely care about our animals. We highly recommend Alta Rancho!

Since my original review, the couple of not-so-great employees have vanished. Maybe they were temporary or something. I've taken my parrot twice since then and both times the staff were professional and kind, and they finished with my bird in a timely manner.

The place is OK, especially if you have a pet with allergies. Dr. Henderson is very caring and knows what she is doing. Dr. Schufer is also the same way however, he will look for things that you don't really need so that he can charge you more. The reason for the 2 star rating is the staff. They are the worst. There is high turnover in this place and the only person who is competent is Richard. The rest make me afraid to leave my dog with them. They are some of the laziest people on the planet. I once took my dog there and one of the lazy technicians carried my dog in mid air by his harness! By his harness I said! That is my dog was hanging in mid air by a strap that wrapped around his chest and stomach! If you don't like your pets too much and like to spend a lot of money on stuff you don't need then this is the place for you.
