Don't come here expecting to get a fast cup of coffee.
Expect a crowd for sure. Be prepared. You are about to enter a pretty packed, small, wonderful place where they welcome regulars to bring their own mugs and keep it there.
I have had a few friends in bangs play here, the music is always great, but not a lot of seating, so be warned.
The art on the walls is local and for sale.
The outdoor patio is great, especially on a semi cold day (less people will want to sit out there...)
Food is good, coffee is good, people are nice.. parking is kinda hard, but just walk a few blocks, it's good for you. -

My favorite breakfast spot. Can be very busy on weekends with no designated hostess. The place does a lot of take-out coffee so you have that line plus people waiting outside to be seated. Some people would be annoyed by this but what you need to remember is that it's a small, casual coffee shop. We typically go during the week but don't mind waiting when we have visitors in town for the weekend. FYI - Easier to sit outside if you have a group of 4+ but I don't recommend for large groups. I think the long table outside in the back seats 6...
Ate inside once but it was a little cramped for our taste. In my college days, this would've been a good place to sip coffee and work. I think they have live music/open mic nights but not sure when.
We prefer the outdoor seating. I love being able to bring my dog and you'll see a lot of people do the same. Most are usually pretty well behaved, but now and then you get the bozos who bring yappy things or fail to put the lock on their dog's retractable leash... duh?
I'm not a coffee drinker, but their tea is great. I usually get the mango with a bit of honey on the side. Coffee drinking friends have enjoyed their choices here. Also notable are their eclectic mugs which I presume come from yard sales. Fun to see which one you'll get.
My boyfriend and I absolutely love breakfast here. You can't beat $7 for eggs benny! Other favorites are Greek and Salmon omelets, Surfer's Burrito (ask for salsa), and 1/2 order French toast. Side of fresh fruit is actually fresh and the flavors aren't all blended together like most places serve. Their bacon is awesome.
Staff is small, friendly, and genuine. We've never had any issues that weren't easily solved but we're also laid back and have worked in the service industry. -

Free Wifi and great selection of coffee.
The toffee latte was really good. It had alot of flavor, and since I like drinking the sweet types of coffees, this was perfect for me. The Chai latte was also good. I cant drink milk, so when I ask for soy milk, the drink always tastes worse. However, at Alta, my chai latte with soy was still enjoyable.
Its also a great place to study during non-busy hours. -

Cute cosy place to grab a brunch
My friends and I came here after a morning hike it was nice, but it gets crowded and parties of 2+ have to wait a while for seating.
I had a garden omelet alá carte, price was decent for the generous serving ALTHOUGH there was way too much cheese. For a lactose intolerant person, I usually just pick it off, but there was so much it was impossible to pick more than 50% of it off..
I don't remember who served us, but we had two waitress, the first one was really mean and angst-y; unpleasant and uncomfortable to be around with and ask for things...perhaps she was getting off her shift? but the second waitress was really friendly. -

Great local coffee shop. A small beachy place with a nice patio. Great breakfast. Juevos Rancheros is my favorite there. Also a great selection of pastries and coffee.

Walked here with some friends after eating at Mama D's since it was a block away from it. I had seen this place on yelp and I knew I wanted to try it. As soon as I walked in the first thing that came to mind was "damn this place is so hipster.' The workers, things on the wall, and just the atmosphere radiated hipster. Anyway now to the coffee, it was very flavorful and tasty. This is coming from someone who is not a coffee fan. I got the ice latte and it was good, but my friend got the Iced Mocha and that was a lot sweeter than mine. Next time around Im getting that instead.

Such a random location for a coffee shop, BUT great service, ambiance and coffee!
I got the toffee latte - there were toffee bits on the top which was a nice crunch to the coffee, but the syrup at the bottom was far too sweet! Also, It had a great taste, but it wasn't hot enough (yes, i did order the latte). It was a pretty small coffee shop so at times cramped, but very homey and the staff talks to you frequently and always have a smile on! It seems like a great place to study - i guarantee i'll be back!, but maybe not something so sweet. i like my coffee strong & hot! -

This is my idea of heaven.
Free Wifi, great selection of coffee and tea, fairly friendly service, community events, and they're open late.
(Yes, Virginia, it's true -- there's a coffee shop that's OPEN LATE! IN OC!)
It's hard to get seating, especially around lunch or dinner time -- they give priority to their dining customers, and I can understand that.
The indie atmosphere is awesome. Vibe can't be easily found in this part of coastal Orange County. -
Review from Hayley H.
I was so excited to try the Toffee Latte but then extremely disappointed when it tasted like water down milk with redi-whip and some toffee bits on top. Come on, you don't even use toffee syrup? Since when did putting a garnish on something mean that it became a unique new concept? In that case, why don't you put some Skittles on watered down milk and call it a skittles latte. Don't waste your money and FYI, they will yell at you if you have your cell phone out, there's even a sign, so don't even try it.

coming here with a party of more than 2 (with intentions of sitting inside) is ill-advised.
But coming here with patience and a hankering for a good homemade breakfast is the right attitude!
This place is an indie-hipster cafe with California flare.
I've only tried their breakfast here, and boy, they treat you good!
I've enjoyed their (eggwhite) Garden Omelette (ala carte) for 5.95 and I've also tried their bueno bowl (eggwhite as well).
Oh lawday their Garden Omelette hit the spot! BUT it's chock full of cheese.. like far too much cheese. You've really gotta try that though! Broccoli, Tomato, Mushrooms.. yuum!
Non-ala carte is seriously far too much food for a girl like me, but I'm sure my boyfriend of manly appetite can down the entire entree with sides plus a drink... And honestly, it's a pretty good deal. They have homemade toast, fruit, cottage cheese, hominy and potatoes to choose from for your side.
Overall, this place can get pretty packed (even during the week) and their espresso beverages are a must have alongside your meal.
Give this place a try.. but don't come if you wokeup on the wrong side of the bed, this WON'T hit the spot then.... -

Great food items and good coffee (free refills!) into the unique mugs they give you. Each mug is different, which I love! It's like they went into a thrift store and went to town in the mugs section. I think the last one I got was Christmas themed... kitschy ^_^
Service is always great and super nice. This is a good place to get some work done too. Be warned though that since this is a fairly popular place (there is usually a wait sunday mornings), they do ask for you to be courteous with your time spent at a table. The wait staff does depend on customers wanting to eat at their tables--so I suggest going at a less busy time (like... not breakfast, lunch, or dinner... between).
Their chai tea latte is really delicious and I got one of their breakfast burritos. A good size and I was really full afterwards.
There is some outdoor seating as well for a nice day. I love, love, LOVE coming here. -

Love the space. It's small but the menu is big.
I got a sandwich and thought it was great - I loved that they gave me egg whites.
My cousin's French toast was just okay, kind of plain.
I do like that they make their own bread. Pretty awesome. -

Quaint, cute, quiet, small, good vibes, good sandwiches, and decent coffee... (but that's coming from someone who is very picky about her coffee and espressos).
You can bring a mug and leave it there.
Parking could suck. Great place to meet and have a chat. -
Review from Julie N.
This is the cutest little coffee shop I've come across in Orange County (and quite possibly anywhere) and I had the most relaxing afternoon here. The only damper on my mood was getting scolded by the manager/owner who was irritated at us for not knowing what to do. It was our first time, mind you, and there were people crowding the counter and entry to the seating area... and we were still kind of skimming the menu. Well we ended up being seated and told to wait for a server since we were wanting to order food along with our drinks. All the other workers were much more likable than the owner, and thankfully our great day was led back on track.
Our visit was intended to be a study session, but we spent the majority of our time here gushing over how adorable the place is, raving about the things we ordered (toffee lattes, bagel salmon sandwich, and lemon bars), and grinning ear to ear because of the music being played. Everything I tried was really delicious, and I can't wait to have those same items again as well as try more of their stuff! Their menu is so extensive and it took me awhile to decide on something. I hit a home run with my bagel salmon sandwich, but I've got my eye on the Surfer's Burrito and Chicken & Pesto Sandwich for next time...
After two hours of lolligagging, my friend and I finally decided to leave. One of the workers overheard me saying, "We've been here for so long, we should get going so other people can have our table and parking!!" and chimed in, "Oh no, you guys are fine! Don't worry about it!" She was so sweet!

Great little spot that's off the beaten path. If you didn't know it was there, you wouldn't know it was there, ha.
I've been going here for a few years now, and the folks all seem to be super laid back that frequent the spot. The staff is pretty granola-y, which is kind of what you'd expect from a hidden coffee shop.
Whenever I have friends in town I make sure we stroll by and hang out for a few hours during an open mic night. -

Came in with 4 other girls for some late night tea and coffee
There was a live jazz band playing which the girls enjoyed until I came. We later sat outside to chat and enjoy our drinks. It was nice to sit and gossip until it closed. There were a couple other groups there. It's small inside and the patio was intimate. Good spot to bring a date or a friend.Listed in: Coffee!!!

Who says Newport Beach doesn't have a "real" side? Alta is a dual cafe and restaurant with delicious food, coffee drinks and an ambiance that makes you feel as if you never left home.
I could imagine Alta starting off as more of a cafe with the usual blends, and then expanding into a casual place to grab lunch as well. However, that's not to say their food isn't delicious. The day I came, I (sadly) arrived too late for breakfast so I opted for a chicken pesto sandwich instead. Lightly breaded chicken, a ciabatta roll and pesto sauce with just the right amount of flavor made for a delicious sandwich that would keep me full for hours to come. Also, instead of the standard potato chips on the side, they added suuuuper crunchy tortilla chips instead.
Their drinks aren't half-bad either. Both times I've been here, I've ordered the iced vanilla chai tea latte. Maybe someday I'll try something new, but for now I am way too content with these VCLs. My friend also ordered the famous iced toffee latte and was blown away.
Everything is in the details at Alta. They have live music on certain nights, books you can borrow, mismatched dishes and cups that make you feel like you are someone's house, and laidback indie music. I definitely felt like I had suddenly been transported to the Pacific Northwest.
Why 4 stars? The service was kind of whatever, to be honest. It wasn't really clear if our waitress expected us to pay at the table or near the front, and if you have to wait for a table when you get there (like I did), it can get crowded with people coming in and out.
Ambiance: 5...Only thing missing is my momma.
Service: 3...Nothing too special about taking an order.
Taste: 4...Tasted fresh and healthy and didn't overkill the sauce.
Value/Price: 5...Probably should have opted for splitting a sandwich instead.
Overall: 4 stars...A low-key place to come if you're looking for great food at good prices.Listed in: Let's Do Lunch., It's all because of Yelp., Holes In The Wall., Sometimes things get…, Breakfast time!!

Alta coffee... tried this place because I've only heard good things about their breakfest burritos, and after a long night in newps, whats better than a delish bfest burrito the next day? unfortunately, my expectations were not exceeded, not even close.
We arrive to this coffee shop and see a decent size line and people waiting outside to be seated/order togo. at this point we're thinking, ok, long line, its gotta be good. By the time we get to the front of the line to place our order we are greeted by a distressed hostess. while I know it was busy at the time and wasnt expecting a conversation with her, she was very brief and short with me. wanting to get me out of there as fast as possible. i asked her a few questions about the food and got all one word responses that did not help me with my order at all. anyways, i decided to order the surfer's burrito, breakfest burrito, and an iced toffee latte. All 3 came out in decent time, and when my friends got their food it was time to feast.
surfer's burrito: 2/5 not sure if i just got a poorly made one, but once i picked my burrito up it fell apart, very poorly wrapped. the tortilla was also not heated up and tasted as if it was just taken out of the fridge, not a good mix with hot eggs/cheese/and bacon. This burrito only gets the 2/5 rating due to the good fresh and crispy bacon and the sour cream and avocado which i added to it. it also states that the burrito comes with enchilada sauce which mine didnt. $7-8 with added sour cream and avo
breakfest burrito: 3.5/5 this one was better than the surfer's no doubt but still not something I'd recommend. nice and warm tortilla due to the enchilada sauce and cheese topped over the burrito. pretty much same insides as surfer with added beans and rice. but still overall not very tasty. and moderately filling. $7-8
iced toffee latte: 4/5 the best thing i had while there. nice tasting coffee with not too much ice topped with whip cream and choco and toffee chips. bombbbb. only thing that made me happy when leaving this place.
overall: wouldnt recommend. im certain there's plenty of better places in newps for breakfest burritos. but if ur a fan of coffee then check this place out. -

Great small little cafe tucked within residential neighborhood. Offers comforting home made desserts and pastries and delicious toffee latte with fresh whipped cream (not the stuff from a can).

Food and cofee is good here. I've had bfast, lunch, and dinner there. There is one woman that works there with a darker complection with AMAZING eyes who is always super friendly and nice and has worked there forever. Everyone else working there makes you feel like they are doing you a favor by serving you or taking your order. Its super pretentious for what it is, it's ok, but really the only true local coffee shop in Newport. Every time I've been there (and I'm local) they make you feel like a burden for being there. I want to like it, but if they're going to act like they don't need my business, I'm not going to give it to them.

Wow, had high hopes for this place with all the hype. At best, I was disappointed. I had the eggs Benedict, packaged deli sliced ham and yolk was cooked all the way through on both of mine and my dads. Service was the worst I've ever experienced in my life, and I've worked in the service industry. My coffee was empty the whole time, and my water tasted like soap. I will never go back and I live in Newport! OVERRATED is the word of the day on this spot.

Sleep is a symptom of caffeine deprivation -- Author Unknown
A relationship would be nice right about this time of year, to stay in, cuddle, kiss, movies, laugh, hot chocolate. But thats only fantasy -- Author Unknown
After the cozy Basilic meal, Secret Agent and I went out for coffee to complete the circle of a missed connection. I was still under the weather so hot chocolate fit the bill...Secret Agent had tea.
Alta is a hip, cool coffeehouse that wouldn't be out of place in the Pacific Northwest...live music with open mic night, rotating art on the walls (most of it amateurish but a few pieces were inspired), kids and young adults acting cool with a few Gen X'ers like me thrown in to up the average age above 19. As Jill H wrote it is horrible designed with an overworked staff but that is part of its charm...the room kinda wraps around and then flows to the outside with a great outdoor patio. It was the only sign of life on this drizzly, soupy, misty night.
We should be thankful a place like this exists in the distinctly soulless Newport Beach. The hot chocolate was very good...people watching and listening was stellar. Under the weather, I was barely holding on so the surrounding energy was welcome.
And here's hoping you find your relationship in 2012, if you don't have one, that fills you with warmth for those cold nights :) -
Review from David G.
Let's talk about tea.... the forgotten coffee shop beverage.
I love tea. It seems like a lot of people don't. When I'm with someone and order tea, my companion usually just gives me askance looks, as if saying, "Tea? Nobody under retirement age drinks tea. Have coffee, or a latte." But no, I stick to my tea, especially decaf.
Having said that, I can't think of a better place in Newport Beach to grab tea than Alta. Yes, the name of this joint may say "Coffee", but this will always be "Alta Coffee & Tea" in my mind.
With approximately an hour to kill in Newport Beach on a surprisingly chilly December evening, I whipped out the handy-dandy Yelp app on my iPhone, which pointed me to Alta as a good choice for a nearby place for a warm beverage. It did not lead me astray. Alta is a lovely little coffee shop, tucked a block off the main drag and very easy to miss. However, once you walk inside, you're embraced by a warm, cozy, and inviting ambience.
You have your choice of indoor of outdoor patio seating. The cold weather made it a no-brainer for me -- inside all the way. After ordering some green tea at the counter, I found my way to a corner table that was ideal for listening to the live music that was playing on the other side of the room. The volume was perfect -- just enough to provide some atmosphere without being overbearing.
The tea? Well, it's pretty hard to mess up tea, which is one reason I tend to order it. Suffice it to say that it was very successful at providing the warm pick-me-up that I was looking for.
Between the tea and the music, I found that the time that I was trying to kill just whizzed by.
Looking for a delightful coffee shop in Newport? Look no further than Alta.Listed in: Orange juice

Great place to drink coffee and sometimes listen to live music.
This place definitely has the hippie character, especially when there are Open Mics.
Few tables to drink coffee and eat outside. Smoking is okay at this place. None of the people here GLARES at you for smoking a cig. Sometimes, at a normal coffee shop in the OC bubble, ppl stare and glare at you like insects for smoking but this place isnt.
Always come here for the toffee latte but its a hit and miss. Sometimes it has the sweetness of toffee and the taste of thick milk . Sometimes, its so bland.
Great place for brunch for also. Always order the Salmon Bagel which is my fav! -
Review from Julie K.
I ended up at Alta because I was in the area and craving some breakfast.
Sadly for me, I got there at 12:10 and breakfast is only up to 12 o'clock on Mondays-Fridays, boo :(. Breakfast is served until 2 on the weekends though.
Take a seat inside if you're there for food - or tell the barista at the front you'd like to sit outside for a meal. I chose inside because I didn't notice the patio from the side I came in...but I wish I knew because the patio looked so amazing when I noticed it while leaving.
Since I missed lunch but still wanted something breakfast-y, I ordered a half salmon bagel sandwich for $4.50. At that price, I expected to receive a dinky half sandwich that could be eaten in 4 bites. What came out was a beautiful open face bagel-cream cheese-salmon sandwich accompanied by sliced tomatoes, onions, and sprouts. It was pretty simple, but it tasted really hearty and fresh at the same time. It was also pretty filling. There was even a side of tortilla chips...which, i have to admit was kind of weird because there was nothing to dip it in.
After the meal, I enjoyed a Cafe Au Lait and a good book. There are a few plugs for laptops, but it looked like small lamps were plugged in for when it gets dark.
I would like to come back again and try the breakfast. On the patio :P.Listed in: Good mood, Good food

BF and I arrived at the beach super early and the only spot that looked lively and opened was this cozy little coffee shop to escape from the cold weather outside. Local coffee shop feel with indoor and outdoor patio seating.
I was planning to try their Alta's Crepe Cakes, which sounded delish from their description that it is not your traditional crepe cakes. However to my disappointment, they are only served Sat and Sun only.
- Blueberry Cinnamon Roll $3.25: cinnamon roll with a hollow center filled with oooey gooey blueberry preserves. Too much center. I could have done with less blueberry sweetness.
- Smoked Salmon Omelet $8.75:Grilled red onions, cream cheese with tomato. Served with homemade toast & strawberry jam, and fruit: honey dew, cantaloupe, grapes (your choice of fresh fruit, cottage cheese, potatoes or hominy). Typical, nothing stood out.
Service was great, since was so early and such a small shop, they kept on refilling our coffee nonstop. Free wi-fi, which was a plus. It is a good spot to catch up and chill at the beach.
P.S. Bathrooms are located outside to the side of the building. -

My favorite coffee stop! always open late, good place to kick back with a friend. has an inviting atmosphere and is woodsy, cozy, and compact, but not squeezed for space. the music can get a little loud but the live performances are folksy and pleasant. vanilla chai latte was heavenly, aromatic, wonderful. -

Overrated. We walked in for lunch and were not greeted, not welcomed and simply handed 2 menus while the wait-person attended to her cash register. She barely looked up. We handed the menus back and walked out. Their attitude is terrible. I've eaten here before with a better experience. Its unfortunate they are so inconsistent.

Surfer burrito is amazing but the service there is horrible. Its been good maybe 4 out of the 20 times Ive been there. Its pretty disappointing and its why Ive made a conscious effort to not go there. Its good and I like the atmosphere a lot but I can't count on how fast my food may or may not come and I might get a server who seems they can't wait till Im done eating so I'll leave. Just not great service. Fix that and I'd go there weekly!

Scottsdale, AZ
We generally liked this place, but a few things took our rating down. The food was good, not great. We had a Greek omelet and a Lox sandwich. Omelet was pretty good, a little dry. Sandwich was pretty good however had too many onions and not enough capers. I will say my mocha latte was great.
What takes the rating down is the service and atmosphere. Atmosphere is a quaint coffee house granola kind of place. In that sense it was okay, but it was very crowded with small spaces and slightly claustrophobic (this, from a person who is not claustrophobic). Employees were all very friendly, so no concerns there....but very inattentive. We had to get up several times for some basic items since our server never returned to find out how we were doing. I had to look around the restaurant for a pepper shaker after being told there were some pepper packets on the coffee bar (wrong). I had to get up yet another time for an extra napkin.
conclusion: great place to go for coffee with friends, but not for a served meal.
