Al's does it right! Kudos to Jerry the manager!
The suggestion board makes for terrific reading. Their selection of organics and local foods is way above average, and they make big attempts to tell you wear the produce comes from. They have Boar's Head meats, Intelligentsia Coffee, and a great selection of discounted flowers if you go on the right day!
On one supremely hot day they were giving away free bottles of water when you left the store for your car. Love it! -

This is a great family owned grocery store. The bakery and wine sections are well stocked and the staff is friendly.

The groceries are a touch over priced for the beach community but I must say that their deli is like a full service carry out restaurant The food is great and the staff is very helpful.

Review from Eric B.
Over lunch a few weeks ago, my host was driving me around the various subdivisions of homes on or near Lake Michigan. There's a lot of Chicago-based money that flows into this area from the vacation home trade and one question was where do all these people get their groceries. This Al's Supermarket was his immediate answer. So after work, I drove down US 12 to Al's.
Al's is part of a long-time and family-owned business that includes 6 grocery stores (2 in LaPorte, two in Michigan City, one in South Haven, and one in New Buffalo called Barney's). This store is roomy, clean, and just brimming with culinary choices for locals and big city invaders alike. I was particularly impressed with the selection of wine and cheese, the separate coffee bar, deli, and just plain home town friendliness. -

They remodeled this store about a year or two ago. Tip - top job on the remodel. They have a big specialty section - lots of fancy cheese, dips, etc. A great deli. They have a good wine and beer section too.
They have a coffee bar and sell Intelligentsia and there is a nice spot to sit by the fireplace with the morning newspaper. There is also an outdoor seating area to enjoy a cup of coffee and a pastry.
The take away counter by the deli is very very good. Lots of items to choose from. You can get an entire meal packaged up to take home or do what we do - get a bucket of fried chicken and some sides to take down to the beach and have dinner by the lake. -

Really nice supermarket with lots of choices. The deli meats are all Boar' Head and they have LaBriola breads and a great selection of cheeses. I suspect they are a little pricey as they cater to the summer crowd of Illinois tourists, but I make a trip there monthly to get the great deli stuff. Oh, they also have a section where they sell Bit of Swiss pastries. Yum.
