Review from Oh K.
New York, NY
I stop here every time I drive by, whether I'm hungry or not.
Their dogs are footlongs (though they also have regular length "shorty dogs") and, like all hot dogs stands, they have a special sauce -- their sweet/hot Hawaiian hot relish.
The toppings are self serve - they've got the hot relish, regular relish, chopped onions, sliced pickles, ketchup, mustard, salt and pepper. Other toppings (you've got to order / pay for these ones) include bacon, cheese, chili, and saurkraut (order the Hippo Dog -- it comes with all of these!)
Old fashioned drinks include white bitch beer and cherry and vanilla coke (made with flavored syrups!). Also on the menu are hamburgers, fish sandwiches, steak sandwiches, pulled pork sandwiches, tuna, cheddar fried broccoli, crinkle-cut french fries, onion rings.......
The pulled pork ($2.75 when it's a special, somewhere between $3 and $4 otherwise) is surprisingly good, the onion rings are decent (more batter than onion, but some people are into that), the birch beer is fantastic, and the hot dogs are definitely worth the stop.
I think that (during the summer, at least) they're open until 8:30, and until 7 on Sundays. -

Oh, Al's. How I love thee. I remember when I used to stop at your place after baseball games as a kid.
I'm not sure if it's the foot long hot dogs, the cherry milkshakes (which are REALLY thin, so if you actually want to feel like there's ice cream in it ask for it thick), or the krinkle cut fries, but you never disappoint me.
I'm sure you have other stuff here that's good, but I wouldn't know, because I always have to get hot dogs and fries w/ a cherry shake.
Al's is the perfect non-beach summer place to grab a bite to eat, if you happen to be somewhere near Naugatuck. I'd say it's worth a trip just to go there, but it's probably not if there's a similar place closer to you. I'm willing to accept that a good portion of my love for Al's derives solely from nostalgia.
Still, Al's has a special charm to it, and there's something about sitting at a shaded picnic table scarfing down greasy food and milkshakes that makes the 14 year old kid in me smile. -

Hippo dog (I think), curly fries, and a white birch soda.
Lady working the window was just the kind of surly give and take kind that I have a laugh with. Don't be afraid to ask about the menu, but prepared to have a colorful exchange.
Place is outside with umbrellas and picnic tables on New Haven Road. I think they have a small dining room, but I did not use it.
Dog was PERFECT. Messy with a little added red sauce, but perfect.
Fries were good.
Birch beer was yum.
Not everyday, but I definately recommend. This is the great casual kind of place that I think of when I think of the NE. -

One of the better hot dog stands in the state, Al's is a great little find either for lunch, a snack or dinner. The chili dog is terrific with the right flavors of sauce and meat. And the hot relish is terrific (and this coming from a person who doesn't relish, well, relish.
But I'll let you in on a secret, their fries (in container and then wax paper if its to go) are terrific. Fresh and hot and crinkle cut. A good compliment to the hot dog.
There are picnic tables out front (and a few inside -- though hardly worth looking at) but who cares. Its a hot dog stand. -

Who needs the hair of the dog when you have a footlong hotdog and a chocolate shake?! A seriously delicious hot dog with delicious homemade relish. No frills, just does it right. I don't travel through the valley that often, but I will make a point to stop again for this little joint.
Only con - don't get the clam chowder. Just not that good. But the dog, the chocolate shake and the sweet little old lady that takes your order will put a smile on your face. -

So I've lived in Naugatuck for the last 11 years and I JUST went to Al's Hot Dogs for the first time about a month ago. I can't believe I've missed out on Al's for the last 11 years!!! I ended up getting one hot dog with chili and cheese, and another one with sauerkraut and mustard. I hear that you really have to try their hot relish - so I now have an excuse to go back. If you stop in at Al's on any day you won't be disappointed, but stop in on a cold rainy day and you'll be in love!!!!

The best. I always find a way to stop here on my way back from, well, anywhere. Great great dogs and cheap prices. Hell, we've even made the drive from Cambridge just for Al's dogs

Get the hippo dog! Footlong hot dog with melted american cheese, crispy bacon strips, chili & kraut. Pairs up perfectly with a birch beer and sweet potato fries.
