YOU GO THERE NOW AND GET THE UNLIMITED FISH TACOS!

Yeah it's a great deal, and they have really good fudge as well. Good cozy place homecooked food. You can tell the owner loves and enjoys the place and what he does. So you should go enjoy the experince as well.

Foodies, this is the place on your list for So Cal, now jump on it!

Well, the pumpkin pancakes were very tasty.  Their menu said I would get three, and they only brought me two.  The waitress explained it was an error on their menu, but they happily brought me one more.  No biggie I guess.  My husband enjoyed his banana pecan pancakes a lot!  Interesting that they undercharged us for his food by a dollar.  (?!)

My husband and the couple next to us both noticed a waitress eating on the job some sort of English muffin or biscuit she had just doused with butter.  Not a huge deal until she was licking butter off of her fingers and she proceeded to NOT wash her hands and continue working.  To me, that is disturbing.  Also, I can accept out of date interiors EXCEPT when the conditions appear to be a health or safety hazard as I feel the state of the deteriorated countertops were in.  They looked like a breeding ground for bacteria and germs!  Same thing with the rotted yucky caulking around the sink.  I wish I could upload the picture I snapped.  These things are a deal breaker.  I didn't wish to visit the restroom as my husband confirmed my suspicions that I wouldn't want to see it.  Good food, but beyond what I read in others posts as "outdated".

Pretty much exactly what you'd expect this place to be like when you pass by it.

Very mom and pop, very old fashioned, very good.

We walked here for breakfast a few times and it has always been a pleasant experience. The waitresses are all older, quirky ladies who bring a lot of spirit to the place.

There is almost always a crowd here, but the most we've waited has been 15 minutes or so.

I love the eggs bennedict here...the sauce is seasoned as it should be and they don't drench the english muffin in it like most places do. The corned beef hash is really good also, and the coffee is refilled endlessly by the attentive golden girls.

Their $5 lunch special, soup and 1/2 sandwich, hits the spot.  If your super hungry, order something more substantial.   Service was personable, although food was somewhat slow coming - Al was out of town that day ;-).  Decor is dated; however, reminds me of Mayberry USA (if your not sure what or where I mean here, don't go to this place as you will hate it, instead go to Jack in the box down the road), so I can live with dated.  I need to try some other dishes next time and update my review.  It's kind of hard to screw up a tuna sandwich and vegetable soup, but it can be done today.

Basic breakfast food, nothing impressive.  Had pancakes with blueberries/granola, mushroom spinach omlette and bacon.  They were nice to me until I showed my groupon the waitress got an attitude and said if I don't have a barcode then they can't accept it, I finally pulled it up on the site.  Won't be back unless I got a groupon and am in the area!

Kiddo was feeling under the weather on the way back home from San Diego, so we stopped here just by chance.  Wow, flashback to the 60's, in a minimalist way.  The place is friendly and the waittress was very helpful, considering she was the only wait staff available.
This is diner comfort food.  Simple menus and it looks like the popular hangout for the locals in the area.
DH tried the homemade hash which he stated is unique but overall, tasty.   I also tried their crab cake eggs benedict which was decent but a tad too salty.   The fresh fruit on the side is locally grown and very good.  The coffee was blah.
I also happened to have room for the several types of fudge made there so I tried a piece.  Yum!
If I happen to be in the area again, I would consider stopping in again since I like divey places.  The place is decent but could use a fresh coat of paint to liven up the place.

A really old restaurant which is ideal for breakfast in the Village but boy, does this place need a makeover.

When Mrs. Steve M. and I ate here we sat at the counter. The place, as far as I am concerned was kind of "cluttered" and it was old in there, seriously old, beyond old. Its not how the place looks that makes the food taste one way or another and I certainly don't decide where to eat based on how a place looks but you'd think they'd modernize this joint a little.

Food was decent, nice place for a sit down breakfast with an easy to find location. Parking can be tight (its the Village) and they do have some folding tables set up outside to dine at. Al's also features homemade fudge that they make on the premises which we got to try and was pretty delicious.

Staff was super friendly. Overall, a nice little "old" place to have breakfast.

This is classic Carlsbad, or so I've been told.

This place is a dump but I think its one of those things were locals want it to be the same way it was 30 years ago.  The service was genuinely friendly and fast.  Food was tasty too if you like diner food.  I wouldn't come here in search of healthy meal but I think they do have egg whites and you could split the large portions with a friend.  One of the drawbacks to Al's is it can be a bit noisy.

While I was at Al's the lady next to me tapped me on the shoulder to tell me that she came to Al's when she was a young adult (probably now in her late 70s or older).  Later that day I also had the pleasure of trying Al's fudge and meeting Mrs. Al at the Farmer Market.  Mrs. Al was very nice and her fudge was good!

The food is terrible...I got an egg white omelet with cheese, tomato and chilis...the cheese was not melted...the coffee was luke warm and just did not have good flavor, I had no refill it was so bad. The sourdough toast had one piece over cooked and one under and barely toasted...they need to get a better toaster at least...

The waitress was wonderful...nice and attentive

I think Denny's omelets are 100 percent better, and I was trying to find something unique, big portions really good, but this Al's was not. Al's had really small portions and for breakfast food which is so cheap to make...this was such a let down...

Make your egg white omelet bigger...ingredients more fresh...use real chili not ortega...one side of omelet had no chili, the other side had a flood...get a new toaster if your main venue is breakfast. Serve coffee piping hot...it was the worst breakfast I have ever had. blek...

Had breakfast here and it was total bushleague. I got the chicken fried steak with biscuits and gravy and was very much disappointed.

The steak was only breaded on the top? Like, listen man, I know my chicken fried steak, and no amount of gravy can hide the one-side of my steak missing the breading.

    Come on that's breakfast bushleauge!

Ohh, it was also soggy, too thin, tough and tasted like a salt lick covered with a bland, slimy goo identified by Al's as gravy. Never in my life have I ever wanted to scrape the gravy OFF of my food!  If I were a deer, this salt lick aspect to my dish would have have been awesome, but...

I eat just about anything but could not put down this poor excuse for the most important meal of the day.  I mean how they managed tough and soggy for the same dish still dumbfounds me!

The only thing fresh about the biscuits was that they were "freshly" removed from the Pillsbury tube. The gravy reminded me of what they'd serve in the lunchroom in 6th grade...and that's a FAIL people.

Friends ordered pancakes and waffles, and out of pity, put some on my plate. [By this time, I had actually turned into a deer.] The pancakes and waffles were good, but if you can't cook a pancake you should not even be serving breakfast.   The service was friendly and they brew a decent cup of coffee in unique mugs.

I give this breakfast bush 2 "Dehydrated Deers" outta 10

So I've driven by this place more times than I can count, and finally stopped in for breakfast.  I ordered a Santa Monica omelette, and was not even remotely impressed. My guess is the tomatoes were not seeded, making it watery, and the eggs just tasted off. Although the waitress tried to be nice, she was a wee overbearing. I'll definitely stick with Beach Break.

Al's cafe is one of the best places to eat in North County, even San Diego.  The waitresses and super nice and really a lot of fun.

The food is great too.  The have multiple options for eggs Benedict and vegetarian options as well.

To top it all off, they have fudge!  Which is perfect when you just had a huge breakfast and need something sweet.

We met Al a couple of times and he was very cool and we were glad to patron his place.

They also have a kids eat free promo for families.

Absolutely check this place out if you are in Carlsbad!

Cute and quaint-ish.  The food quality was decent but the ambiance was not-all-fantastic... My friends and I first walked into the main diner area and the air circulation was very poor.  The diner was incredibly stuffy and kind of HOT.  So we opted to sit outside! It was nice on the "patio"/ sidewalk seating... the table cloths need to be replaced, every time you would move to cross your legs under the table, the cloth would stick to your pants, arms, shirt... anything it would touch!

Although the food was decent, it was hard to get past the overall "can't touch this" cleanliness of the outdoor seating... may try and go back when its cooler outside and I can sit indoors...

I am new to Carlsbad Village and making an effort to try all of the restaurants in town.  Today, I tried Al's Cafe.  I love going to small diners.  Al's was good - it is old school but with good food. I had an egg white omelet with spinach, feta, and mushroom served with fresh fruit and wheat toast.  It was good, filling, but I didn't feel like it was over the top. I will go back here and def. will be taking my family from PA when they are out visiting.  Great place for families, grandparents, couples, etc.

This place is good. I went there yesterday for breakfast with a friend. The location is great, the food was alright. I ordered the breakfast quesadilla and it wasn't amazing, but tasted okay. The hash browns were good. I was a little disappointed with the mimosas we ordered. They were super tiny. The ladies that work there are awesome though and I love the old diner feel of the place.

This place is just a classic retro-cool diner that is authentically retro, not retro-by-design.

We drove by Al's, and I instantly pulled out my blackberry and looked it up on Yelp to see what the local yelpers thought of this place.  Friendly, good value, generous portions.  We were sold.

It was St. Patty's Day, so folks were in various states of green, and their lunch special was going to be corned beef and cabbage.  But, we were there for breakfast, and had French toast, bagels, coffee, fruit, bacon - the works.

The service was terrific and they basically helped us hand-craft our order to suit our kids, mixing and matching items on the menu at will.  The food was solid, hearty and tasty as advertised.

The atmosphere was something of a timewarp.  If you're looking for a truly local and simple down-home place where (literally) someone might drop by to drop off the Elk's club flag while picking up a bagel at the counter (this happened), then Al's is your place.

4 stars for what it is.

Al's Cafe in the Village gives you that great small town feel. The waitresses treat everybody like their own kids, and will compliment you on your menu choice every time! The atmosphere is SUPER comfortable and casual. I recommend any of the benedicts, they are all delicious (especially the new crab bennie). The homestyle potatoes are crispy and delicious, and the fruit bowls are always fresh and in season.

Although the bennies are enjoyable, I prefer the lunch menu- The salads are delicious. They have a homemade strawberry vinaigrette dressing that just works! And for a sweet ending you get a free fudge sample after your meal. If you are in the mood for casual dining try Al's Cafe in the Village.

Are you kidding?  There are so many better places to eat!  I live in the Village and realized why I don't eat here often or at all, even though it's a walk from my house.  I ordered a chicken salad sandwich and boy was it underwhelming!  It tasted like mayonnaise and that was it!

The service was good, but that doesn't make up for the sticky old seats and the bland food.  There are way better places to eat close by like Grubby's in Oceanside, or better yet HONEY's in Encinitas.  Don's Country Kitchen is down the street so go there before you eat here.  Your mouth will thank you for it!

The staff is really friendly ("sunny" is a good description), with very fast and efficient service. The food is very good as well. They have great bacon (which is critical) and the french toast is good and thick. They have some very good "locally famous" specials that my wife loves too.

After searching Yelp for a breakfast place not in a strip mall, we went to Al's yesterday morning with our 3-year-old and had a great breakfast.  I got Ben's Wild Man Eggs with hashbrowns, and everything was delicious (and surprisingly not greasy).  My husband got French toast, and my son got a kid's breakfast with a Mickey Mouse pancake, egg, and bacon.  We all cleaned our plates.  Coffee was good too, and they kept our mugs full.

To make it even better, kids eat free with paying adults, so our total bill was under $20 and we walked out stuffed.

Today we went back, and I ordered the breakfast quesadilla.  It was probably not the healthiest choice, but I had never heard of such a thing and had to tried it.  Good, good, good.  The guys got the same thing as the day before and were happy again.

We'll be back tomorrow on our way out of town.  I'm sure we'd be here every weekend if we were locals.  I love the super friendly service, great prices, and yummy food!

I work about a block away and decided to order take-out from here. It's a very informal establishment and the waitress will tell you to sit anywhere you like. She was rushing around everywhere, but still remained friendly and attentive as she could be.

I ordered the Eggs Monterey and asked to substitute sausage for bacon. No problems there. They put a rush on my order so I could take it out sooner. Service is definitely good here.

The food however, which to me is the most important part, was so-so. There was nothing special about the eggs with chilies, sausage, avocado and cheese on top. No seasonings at all. The potatoes were half burnt and completely bland. Not even a tiny bit of salt for flavor. I have pretty high tolerance for bland food, but if it weren't for the cheese and sausage, this breakfast would have been completely flavorless.

One star for the food, but their service efforts get them an extra star. As a final note, I always see plenty of people in there, so a lot of people obviously disagree with me. It may be I just ordered the wrong thing.

    Worst meal of my life.

I am not picky and never give bad reviews, but this meal was inexcusable.

I ordered the Als special omelet which is supposed to have spicy sausage.

The chefs chopped up a hot dog because they could not find sausage and put it in the omelet.

I told the waitress I did not want the omelet but was all set, there was no need to re-make it. Al came over and apologized and said he was embarrassed; the mistake was a result of the chefs being lazy. The waitress then said the meal would not be on the bill.

Al left, and another server brought over the same omelet I had before.  The Chef had scrapped out the hot dog from the inside of the omelet (however he left one piece) and replaced it with a hot link. I ate it because i did not have the heart to complain again, and was rather hungry.

I guess because I ate the replacement, they decided that putting a hot dog in an omelet was not merit enough to remove it from the bill; we paid full price for our meals.

My girlfriend and I live in Carlsbad Village. We love every place we go to eat and came here on a recommendation from some neighbors. I have never been so disappointed with a meal....

I give it 5-stars for the service and excellent food. Place really does take you back to those retro days before my time. Not modernized at all. Luckily enough, we decided to eat at the counter as all the tables were packed and seemed to pack the whole time we ate here.

Amazing how hard these ladies work hard and enjoy their jobs. Very friendly and you can identify the regulars by the first name basis the waitresses call out.

Ordered the Rib Eye Steak and Eggs ($10.95 )which came with potato home fries and sourdough toast. Well worth the 15 minute wait. Steak was cooked to order. Very juicy and moist. Makes the mouth water thinking about it again. The gf ordered the Macadamia Nut pancakes (or was it french toast) ($8.95). Tried a bite and makes your mouth soothe with sweet flavor with a hint of the Macadamia nut taste.

Coffee was freshly grounded every 5 minutes if not less. So every pour (in my case 5 pours) of coffee was freshly brewed. DELICIOUS!

Update: After realizing somewhat wrote a negative review, I have to say I paid this restaurant a visit on a Saturday of the July 4th weekend. So service for us was quick and I heard no complaints but satisfaction for the service and food.

As soon as I walked in, I felt at home. It's that kind of a place. The waitresses smile at you and treat you like you're a regular, whether you are or not.

We were there for breakfast and the food was good, with a Hawaiian flare. It's not fancy...but they offer you the basics in a good dining experience: good food, a clean dining room, and warm/inviting service. What more could you ask for?

As a resident of Carlsbad for several years, Al's gradually became my Saturday or Sunday breakfast hangout.  I'd hit the counter as part of a routine that involved some morning work, a short run, a high carb breakfast, a jaunt down to the beach for some bodyboarding, a quick cleanup and a few pints with a burger or some fish 'n' chips over at Tom Giblin's (the great, great Irish Pub in the Village over on Grand Street).  I was never disappointed with my breakfasts here, and still try to stop in whenever I have the chance, despite having relocated much further up the coast.

Al's is a hair shy of an anachronism ... an old fashioned corner diner where you're likely to hear a waitress call you "hon" and the owner often works the waffle iron. I hate retrospectating, but this place isn't quaint or nostalgic at all -- it's just ... warm. Comforting. Welcoming. You walk in and feel at home, like you could become a regular and the wait staff would actually remember you (an increasing rarity, I'm noticing).

The food?  At breakfast, typical coffee house / diner fare (eggs, meat, potatoes, toast) with a few standout specialties that, beyond the welcoming atmosphere, make the place worth repeat visits. The "Wild Man" eggs are the house dish, and you can read all about their story on the menu. Worth a try.  The macadamia nut french toast is the sort of decadent delight that will haunt your dreams, and the banana pecan waffles are sweet, rich and include just enough fruit to fool yourself into thinking they're haflway healthy.

Grab a meal, then walk down to State St. to check out the antique shops, head another block or two down for a relaxing stretch on the beach, then head back up Grand for a quick nip at Giblin's and you've had yourself a day.

A dive cafe with very friendly service and ok food.  Used to be a better value when kids ate free.  Homemade fudge is delicious.  Stay with the simple stuff here - burgers and sandwiches.  Stay away from the fish taco - same fried fish you get with fish and chips. Maybe breakfast is better.  Higher rating if the place was bit cleaner and less run down looking.  Just because the place has been around awhile does't mean it can't look nice.

wow, I can't believe how much people like this place? The food was mediocre at best. The AC was on this morning, and I don't understand that either. Perhaps the older lady behind the counter was having hot flashes? I asked the waitress what was up with the refrigerator like temperature in the dining room and shes like "Oh yeah it's cold huh? no shit, thats what I just said lol

Ordered a veggie omelet and had to send it back since it didn't have any cheese on it. NO biggie, potatoes were cooked properly but needed seasoning. The coffee wasn't that good, like strong and watered down or something.. So I'm sitting there staring at the wall by the restroom sign, and think "gee that wall looks really dirty from here, maybe I'm seeing things.. Well I got up to pay and as I'm waiting for the older lady behind the counter to finishing doing whatever she's doing ( there are only 2 other tables in this place, it's 930am ) I look down and see the FUDGE. I was looking at it and thinking, Hmm, this is what everyone is raving about? It looked old, dry and some of it was covered with seran wrap and some of it wasn't. I thought I wonder when it was made? The wall next to the register was really greasy and dirty. So I pay and make my way to the restroom. I look at that wall, YEP it's FILTHY.. I was like OMG what's the restroom going to look like??? I'm scared mommy ..

It's a unisex restroom, I was like floored when I walked in.

    1. No toilet seat covers
    2. The toilet was so filthy it was crying "Clean Clean me, please!
    3. The sink was DISGUSTING it was very dirty
    4. There was water running from the tube under the sink, it looked like an old cast that was on your arm and it was torn open and they decided to salvage it and put it there to do a job?
    5. But there was a huge puddle on the floor, thought it might have been pee, but it was water coming from the sink..

I dryed my hands with the paper towel and used it to open the bathroom door to exit.

I would recommend to the owner, that they close down this place for a few days. They all need to have a pair of rubber gloves, a box of brillo pads and a can of comet and scrub every nook and cranny of this restaurant. It strikes me odd this place would have an A rating displayed in the window. I would never go back, lord knows what's in the kitchen, someone call Gordon Ramsey this place needs help!

Had breakfast there yesterday. The food was great, we all gobbled up breakfast. Coffee was good, and tasty, standard diner quality. This place does not appear to have changed since the 70's. Same tacky posters, possibly the same waitresses!

The place is obviously a hit with the locals, they were packing in there as we left. Al's is a righteous spot

I was looking for a place to eat breakfast yesterday and decided to try this place out. It was packed but I got a seat at the bar immediately. The service was fast and friendly even a little bit amusing. The food was bomb, I had a Belgium waffle with strawberries on top. The strawberries were delicious. They serve breakfast all day. This was exactly what I was looking for.

Mike and I had breakfast here on the way to Raging Waters because I get bonus miles here on my credit card. Initially, I liked the menu and the prices seemed decent. Coffee tasted like Folgers, but it hit the spot and the refills were timely. I ordered a veggie omelet w/ egg whites, toast, and fruit while Mike got a French toast combo w/ bacon. The food came out fairly quickly and the portions were decent. I enjoyed my omelet and Mike devoured his French toast. Overall this place was a great little breakfast spot, but my only qualm w/ Al's Café in the Village is their single bathroom, that had a huge roach crawling around in it. I was too freaked out to pee, so Mike and I went next door to Jack in the Box where they have the cleanest bathrooms I've ever seen at a fast food joint. Granted this was at 8am. I want to like this place, but the bathroom just killed it for me....

The fudge really is 5 star, beating out SEE's by a landslide.......whodathunkit?

BUT you don't come to a diner/dive for the fudge, now do ya?  Here is the deal...come in, sit where you like...the place is loaded with locals, mostly friendly moderately over-weight bilbous- nosed retirees.  You get your choice of waitresses.  The really fun, funky cool brunette, or the dim-witted middle aged bimbo....if you have your 'druthers, ask for the brunette.  PANCAKES ARE AWESOME!!!!! and cheap.  Good eats in the a.m. Coffee is weak, but plentiful. Do not, and I repeat DO NOT order OMLETTES of any variety.

They seem to exhibit a great fondness for processed cheese food, which is neither cheese nor food in their omlettes, and a pechant for using canned mushrooms.  I hate both, and you will too, but it is again, a dive, and a great pancake joint with terrific homemade fudge (a little strange, but hey?)
............and try and hold yer water, the bathroom is a toilet! (and a not so clean one at that) with the workers' lockers facing the commode~ ah, but the beach, the used bookstore across the street, and did I mention the fudge?

I came here on a Sunday at 11:30am and there was no wait.  I got 3 pancakes, 3 eggs, and 3 pieces of bacon for $7.  It was all pretty good.  Not fantastic, but good.  Our waitress was very friendly and attentive.  I would go back to this small, laid-back place!

Always good diner food, great people, and don't forget to ask for a sample of Al's fudge!
