I have been going to Al's Barber Shop for a little over 2 years. I can tell you that once you visit Al's, you'll never want to go anywhere else.
Shannon does an excellent job, and doesn't rush you in and rush you out,. She takes her time to make sure you get the very best haircut possible. Once you become a regular, you can come in, sit down, and let them take over. You don't have to go through the redundant task of explaining how you want your haircut each time, they simply remember. Shannon also takes note of your hair type, and will cut it accordingly so that over the course of a month, it will grow in nicely, so you don't resemble Phil Spector by the time you're due for your next haircut.
I am of the opinion that you get what you pay for. Yes, you will pay a little more for a haircut than you will at a chain, but at Al's you get an amazing haircut every time, and most importantly, you're supporting a local business! I never worry about the haircuts I get at Al's, that peace of mind, and overall quality, is worth every penny!
Al's gets my vote for best haircuts in Denver! Make sure to ask for Shannon! -

I'm definitely a fan of Al's. Especially when Al himself is cutting my hair. Megan is righteous, also.
I have to admit, I went through a period of various stylists where I was unable to get a good cut. I typically don't think about getting my hair until it is absolutely necessary, so I call the shop when that happens. So that means I have to take whoever is available, and that's not always the same person. I've learned my lesson, so now I know when Megan is available and I don't wait until the very last minute. Only until the second to last minute.
They cut my hair well, and then go the extra mile and shave the back of my neck with a straight razor and warm shaving cream. I feel pampered, and not in the diaper kind of way. -

Eeek! Methinks not. Is the perfect way to describe this place, thanks yelp.
So I walk in, the ladies at the front don't acknowledge me. I approach the counter and say "hello" forcing them to respond.
There is one guy in the salon getting a haircut, and these two ladies sitting at the front desk. They tell me they actually don't have time for me, like I couldn't wait for the haircut to be finished, i'd have to make an appt, etc etc.
Overall, rude and not accommodating at all, not even the slightest bit apologetic either. Thanks Al, but I won't be back. -

Hands down this is the best haircut I've ever gotten in Denver.
I'm pretty particular about my hair and I have always been satisfied leaving Al's.
Ask for Shannon. She's been cutting my hair for years and is the best. -

The best haircut I have received in Denver.
While the price may be a bit high for a male cute, $35, it was completely worth the cost. My haircut looks great and I have received compliments on the cut from others. Compared to Floyd's where they try to rush you and just get a tip, the stylists here take there time to make sure hair looks right and you leave happy.
The design is also nice. Super trendy place without feeling pretentious. -

The five star reviews for this outstanding establishment continue...nestled in historic Larimer Square this barber shop combines old school sensibilities with a subtle avante guard panache.
My stylist Erik took care in every aspect of my cut, pure precision, but I've never been to a place where the technique was shared with me, the thought process explained. He is more artist than barber. Also, the cut itself is three times longer than the typical barber.
End result, best hair cut I've ever had and seemed like every woman I met for the rest of the day smiled at me. Hey, perception (and confidence) is everything! -

Imagine if you will that whistle that occurs in Westerns either just before or after someone is going to say, "This town ain't big enough for the both of us." Then the camera pans left and we see Al's. Camera pans right and we see Floyd's.
That's right, in my mind there is an old-fashioned duel between these two businesses. This whole scenario may seem slightly off to you, dear reader, because after all these two establishments specifically cater to boys and I am most definitely a girl. Perhaps you're even thinking I'm unqualified to imagine anything about these two shops. That's where you are mistaken.
I am a girl that gets her hair cut by one of the lovely ladies at Al's. Normally this has occurred in the dark privacy of my own home as I wasn't sure if I were allowed to step foot into Al's Barbershop. Sort of like in the old West where proper ladies weren't seen in certain businesses for fear of tarnishing their reputation. Then, last week I realized I wasn't living in the old West and so I went in.
I have to say I love my hair and I love the one that cuts it so that may make me biased towards her. But, that doesn't make me biased toward Al's itself. And I was extremely impressed with the space this barbershop occupies. It's kind of mod and has exposed brick. It's open and airy and extremely clean. And all the hairstylists are quite professional. And pretty, but that again could be my bias.
Anyway if there is a showdown I'll be Al's Barbershop's second because I certainly want them to stick around. And I have deadly aim. -

I do the buzz thing, so cutting my hair is pretty easy for anyone, right? Not so much! The last place actually made my head look like a globe. Patchy, outlines of hair of different lengths and all for the low low cost of $45! Thank god for Als! this place is great. it's simple, clean and cheap.
I get a consistently good trim and shave on my neck and there's no pretentious attitude anywhere around me. -

If you are sick of sitting in a supercuts anxiously waiting for your haircut and praying to god that you get a good "stylist" then this place is for you. I have been going to Al for about 8 years. I used to go to his shop in Boulder. Now that I live in Denver I thank god he opened up a shop in Denver. The place is a little more expensive than the typical men's haircut, but it is well worth it (especially if you give a crap about what you look like).
There are a few things that are great about this place. 1) It is pretty much a guarantee that you are going to get a good haircut. I used to dread walking into the supercuts because I knew that if I got the wrong stylist I was screwed. 2) No more awkward conversations- Al has great HD TV's that are always on sports center. So if you don't feel like talking you can just chill and get caught up on sports. Or if you feel like talking, it is easy to talk about sports. 3) Lastly, the location is great. Right in downtown. -

Al's is the best if you actually have hair. If you like a high tight fade this place isn't for you, and you should instead go to Sports Clips and watch the big game while you're at it, pay $15 for a hair cut twice as often, and thus equal the price-tag of a haircut at Al's that Pete wasn't too fond of.
Megan has cut my hair for 5 years at both the Boulder and Denver locations and does a great job. -

I've been going to Al's for like the better part of a decade (starting with their Boulder location). I've been to a couple of different stylists/barbers at this joint and they all know what they are doing. They all actually listen to what you want and make it happen. Having said that, I'm going to review to one employee of Al's Barber Shop in particular, Megan.
She's been cutting my hair for the majority of my time going to Al's (like since 2002), and she turns my head of hair into the best I've ever had. She listens to and understands what you want and also isn't afraid suggest things she knows will look good. Plus no one is as awesome to make conversation with during a relaxing hair trim than her.
So I highly suggest you go down to Al's Denver location (calling first to get a appointment) and enjoy not only a great space with very nice people, but also the best hair transformation possible from Megan. -

Once again, Yelp pulls through for me in the clutch. I was in town for my best friend's wedding. I needed a hair cut that was worthy of being on display before the "dearly beloved," since I would be standing next to the groom as his best man. Yelp steered me to Al's and that was the right direction.
It's been two full weeks since my hair cut and I still just love the way my hair FEELS when I run my fingers through it. Before my visit to Al's, I did not realize a good quality cut could do more than just make it look good.
Aside from the actual cut, the place was super cool and tidy, and my stylist engaged me with a great conversation.
All in all, definitely worth the $30. I will make a point of growing my hair out before my next trip back to Denver. -

After my mediocre experience at Floyd's and all the accolades I heard, I had high hopes for my haircut at Al's.
Nice open plan shop with a very modern, minimal look. Good cut and attention to detail which is what I expected, but nothing that I didn't get at Floyd's too.
Then I got to the counter. $30.00. WTF? I want my little Brooklyn barbershop back!
I want to give two stars here, but despite my sticker shock, the cut and service were good. -

I have been getting my hair cut at Al's for about 10 years, and I wouldn't trust anyone else. Al is always friendly and does a great job. The price is reasonable also.

I'm still getting my hair cut at Al's. Only once in the last 18 months have I deviated (one of those situations where I wasn't in the area and desperately needed a trim because of a biz meeting). I was reminded AGAIN what a crummy haircut can be at one of those chain joints (hello and goodbye again, Floyd's). I should've just gone shaggy to the meeting and waited until I was back in Denver.

Total Yuppie hair salon, this is not a barber shop. Poor service & walk in's not welcome!

Positives:
Great Attention to detail. The person cutting my hair listened to what I had to say. They articulated how they envisioned my haircut. And they executed it to a t which is all I really care about. I hate haircut places where you sort of say what you want, they say "ok" then they proceed to cut your hair the way they cut everyone's hair.
Floor plan and design. Cool style and I also like the seating running the length of the room allowing each person waiting some privacy rather then a couple chairs in the front.
Negatives:
A little slow. I watched and waited for ~40 minutes after my scheduled time as my guy finished up cutting the person in front of me.
Neutral:
You are paying salon prices, not barber shop prices.
Verdict:
Ultimately all I care about is a good haircut. This place did that with 5 stars. -

I just moved to Denver and was trying to find a great barber. After scouring the internet reading reviews on all the local hair choppers, I decided I would have to try Al's (http://askmen.com have them in their top ten in America). I have been to barbershops all over the world, and Al's is the "best I've ever had" haha. Megan cut my hair and treats her work as an art form, referring to a haircut as a "sculpture you wear on your head everyday" awesome. Finding businesses that still care about meeting and exceeding customers expectations are rare, but Al's is on point. Thanks for a great experience! I have found my Denver barber and won't be going anywhere else.

I was extremely satisfied with my experience at Al's. David was very meticulous and professional. He is clearly very competent as a stylist. I am very happy with the results. $35 was a bargain.

i used to cut my own hair. in the bathroom. with a couple of handlheld mirrors and a twenty dollar set of clippers. I got pretty good at homemade fades. I only did this because i was so upset with walking out of other places and paying them to fuck up my hair. At least, this way i would only have myself to blame. However, as that bible verse goes, i had to put away childish things (plus, chicks dig a nice haircut yeah?).
So, i ambled down with twenty bucks in hand and entered Al's (this was four years ago in boulder). I've been an irregular regular ever since.
Alas! they now have one in Denver. Consistency, when it comes to hair, is fucking great. And i'm much more comfortable paying an extra Hamiltion or so to avoid HAVING to wear a hat. -

Ever wonder who cuts the classic mens styles for the American Crew ads, posters, books, packaging etc? Al does and he has for several years. He is a true gentlemans barber in the old school tradition and one of the best. If you want an excellent cut in a modern, friendly, impeccable and no-nonsense environment, look no further. (I consider him inexpensive because for his background, knowledge and ability, his rate is a relative bargain)

I am very picky when it comes to my hair. It's really hard to find a GOOD haircut in Denver. Al's is the exception. Consitently great haircuts, relaxing atmosphere, friendly staff. Overall just a great experience. Shannon cuts my hair. She's super nice, very personable, and "real." None of that phony pretending to be overly interested in everything I talk about...just normal relaxed good conversation....also no loud music or gimmicky crap. Just a solid men's barber shop. Best in town by far.

Great barber shop. Ask for David. I have thick hair and the hair cut last for about 4-5 weeks with no problem. Cut quality and time saving make the $35 price tag worth it.

Al's is the best of the best when it comes to men's hair cuts. I usually have Al himself cut my hair but I've had Patrice cut my hair and she's just as capable as the man himself. Sure it's a few bucks more than all the places like Sports Clips but getting getting a great cut every time by the same person and your not getting your hair cut by someone who's maybe a week out of beauty school. Totally worth the premium. Hell, I drive 20 minutes from Arvada to get trimmed here when there are two salons within a block of my office.

It might seem more expensive, but Al trains his barbers to take their time on the haircut so as it grows in, it still looks good. Also, you can get a "cleanup" in between visits for $5. That makes the difference in price a wash, while the difference in service is HUGE.
The atmosphere is clean and professional. The barber chairs are big and comfortable. The barbers don't spray your head until water is dripping off your nose before they start cutting. Each station has a wash basin where they clean and condition your hair, You're not walking all over the place with that stupid apron wrapped around your neck. After you're washed, they ask you what you want, and by that they don't go "What number do you want on the side?" or "rounded or squared". What kind of a question is that anyway? (Al has never asked me if I want my neck line rounded or squared). They actually use scissors to cut the sides, not electric clippers with a plastic guard on it. If you want a military cut, join the Army. And if I didn't mention the straight razor/hot foam neckline trim, I'd be crazy. (Only certified barbers can use the straight razor, and he'll do your face and neck for a little more money.)
Forget about the Great Clips's of the world (it's a great place to take your kids), and stay out of those gossip/estrogen filled salons (buy your wife a gift certificate). Check out Al's Barbershop, Denver or Boulder. You'll be a customer for life. -

Stop rolling the dice at Floyd's, Supercuts, and other supbar barber shops and head down to Al's. From the friendly receptionist to the great atmosphere, everything about Al's is top notch; great location, great service, and amazing haircuts. I've been going to Al's for almost 8 years and would recommend it to everyone. I'm glad I no longer have to drive to Boulder.

Just went to Al's today for the first time. I was there for an appt. with David.
For those of you who used to go to Aveda Academy on Market and David was giving you fantastic looking hair- fear not, he has relocated only a couple of blocks away.
I hate when they won't tell you where your stylist went but I guess that's part of the business.
It took me so long to find David who is a true professional and gives a consistently high quality cut every time- you all know how important that is. He focuses on what you want and makes great suggestions about what might improve your cut.
What gets better is when you go home and can actually recreate the look yourself with little work and it looks great the whole time its growing out.
Al's is a great place in a great location with a very relaxed atmosphere. It is not a place "just for guys" so if you want a consistently high quality experience with a professional give Al's and David a try.
