Well, I am definitely from the city and I don't normally go fishing, but when we first discovered this place it was nothing but fun!!!  We took our own fishing poles, but they have poles ready and waiting for you.  This is definitely a great place for kids because you are for sure going to catch a fish...it doesn't take long!  You have to be careful because you have to pay for what you catch...no throw backs!

One of the best things about this place is that they will clean and package your fish in ice for your trip back home.

I will definitely go back!

Alpine Trout Lakes is to fishing what the California Roll is to sushi. It is, but it isn't.

Located just off the main drag through town, this is an easy excursion well-suited for families with young kids or anyone looking for a summertime activity in Big Bear other than the Bowling Barn. Like the California Roll, this place provides a safe, low commitment introduction to fishing. They provide everything you need and will even clean and store your catch for you (for a fee, of course).

What's This Gonna Cost Me?

$5 rental fee per pole
$7 entry fee for every six people
$1 cleaning fee per fish (optional)
$7.49 per pound of fish caught and you must purchase all fish you catch (i.e., you cannot catch and release back into the water)

The pond is shaded by lots of trees and there are many picnic tables with benches suitable for a snack while patiently awaiting a bite on your line.

The big bummer on the day I went was the low fish count which, to their credit, the staff kindly warned us about in advance. Only 100 fish in the pond, they said. Given that their major selling point is the ease of catching fish ("1000% better chance" than in Big Bear Lake), this was a huge letdown. But with a small army of kids in tow who had been promised a fishing trip, fishing an empty pond seemed a better option than facing a revolt. To my hubby's credit, despite the difficult fishing conditions, after a disheartening  first hour he finally caught a trout and provided some good photo ops for the kids.

I'm a city gal.  I don't "rough it" and I don't consider playing with worms or fish guts a particularly enjoyable pastime.  But this place was super fun - you just show up & fish (no nasty fish bait either) & they'll clean whatever you catch.  It was my first go at fishing & I caught a small trout which was quite a feat.  I'd definitely return.

This place is pretty good for a childs first fishing experience.  Be aware, it can get expensive!  If you have your own fishing equipment I suggest you take it because there is an extra fee to borrow theirs.  My kids enjoyed it.
