Awesome place to eat. Quiet little known hole in the wall next to Eggs-n-Things.
Had an incredible New Yorker (pastrami & corned beef) with sauerkraut. They also have a great little selection of beers in the fridge. -

While in the area on a Frozen Yogurt rampage recently, I spotted Alpine Delicatessen, and opted to give it a go.
Star 1 - How was the service and atmosphere?
Right off the bat it became evident that the couple who own Alpine Delicatessen are also the owners of nearby Rhineland Deli and Benvenuti Deli:
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
http://www.yelp.com/bi...
Sure enough, I immediately recognized the owner, George, behind the counter as having served up my sandwich at Benvenuti. About as friendly as they come, George and Elizabeth provide a comfortable atmosphere stocked with a plethora of imported European wines, sweets, cheeses and breads. I noticed that the couple called many of their customers by name and dished up their regular orders. Admirable. Star Granted.
Star 2 - How were the portions relative to the cost?
For $4.28, I opted to go for a half portion of the Hot Corned Beef sandwich on an Italian roll. While not unreasonable by Deli standards, I must admit I was slightly disappointed with the portion:
http://www.yelp.com/us...
While the sandwich in and of itself was of a decent size, a vast majority of the weight was comprised of the bread and shredded lettuce. At the end of the day, I would have rather stopped by Italia and paid roughly $2 more than double the meat. Finally, while I was intrigued by Alpine's breakfast menu, with what looked like Bagel sandwiches for between $5 and $7, the trend of high prices seemed to carry over. No Star Granted.
Stars 3/4 - How was the food?
While my sandwich wasn't bad, I really couldn't get over the unbelievable amount of bread and the fact that it wasn't toasted. While I'd encountered this same issue at Benvenuti, the quantity of bread had been easily matched by the quantity of meat:
http://www.yelp.com/us...
While potentially my fault for not asking Alpine to really pile on the corned beef, I can't quite go for the full two stars here. Single Star Granted.
Star 5 - Would you eat it every day if you could?
There's absolutely no doubt that George and Elizabeth of Alpine Deli are absolute saints, and the atmosphere they foster at all of their shops is a true benefit to the Thousand Oaks community. That having been said, this is a rare case where the owner's own shop is outdoing them! However, even with Benvenuti close by, and the king of all Delis, Italia, in nearby Agoura Hills, I must admit that I'd come to Alpine on a daily basis just to experience the sense of community that Alpine exemplifies. Star Granted. -

Nice little deli, exactly the kind of place that you want to support. Nice variety of European chocolates and beers. Yummy sandwiches, plenty of parking. What's not to love?

I have been coming to Alpine Deli for years and it is easily the best deli in town. The quality of the food is stellar and the atmosphere is very fun. The owners are awesome and they always remember everyone's names who come in. If you want a good sandwich, Alpine is the way to go. Every time I bring someone here they become hooked.

I think that if you come in here, after the first five minutes, you'll be pleasantly surprised. The basis behind the low rating is really about what the Alpine Deli is, which is a very plain, no-frills deli. Within this space, the Alpine Deli executes well.
They have something like 25 sandwiches, excluding the 5 or so on a specials board, and another 10 or so salads. There are four "deli salads." These are the potato salad, the macaroni salad, the pasta salad, and some artichoke thing which is about $2.75, roughly double the price of the others. The sandwiches come with mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomatoes, and onions, plus the meat and cheese you pick. They're available as half sandwiches for about $4.50 or full for about $6.75. There's also a lunch special for a half sandwich (they say small, which I assume means half because they label the full sandwiches large), a fountain drink, and a deli salad other than the artichoke one for $5.99.
The term deli can be used different ways, so I should point out that this isn't a restaurant like Roxy's Famous Deli. This is sort of a convenience-store deli. They have five small tables inside, and there were another three somewhat stacked together which I think are outside at lunch time. There are cases of alcoholic and non-alcoholic bottled and canned beverages on the right side, stacks of chips on the left side, some convenience store items like cigarettes tucked away in the back, and straight in front, the register with see-through cases for the meats and cheeses.
The parking is for a large shopping center with a Ralph's, so there's tons of it, but you might have crowding problems at the actual store around lunch time. They take credit cards, with no minimum that I could see, and there's no customer bathroom. The owner is extremely pleasant and charming, even by the standards of someone who owns one of these small businesses. He knows his customers (not me since we'd never met) and makes jovial conversation.
The sandwiches are mainly cold cuts, although there are a few hot ones like meatballs, wiener and sauerkraut, and chicken exquisite. I didn't try the chicken exquisite because I wasn't sure that I was ready for such carnal thrill, and also wanted to avoid slipping into the territory of one of my old fraternity brothers who would talk about how sandwiches are better than women. They've also got some breakfast, mainly croissant and bagel sandwiches.
The sandwich was well-done for what it was, which was a plain deli sandwich. It's got the standard side ingredients I listed earlier, plus a big slab of deli meat, which is normal size by the standards of whichever version of these places you've seen before. It's a good plain sandwich, but I'm not sure it's worth going out to get. -

This place is the hidden gem of thousand oaks. The food is always homemade & fresh! George & Elizabeth know the sandwiches of their (many) regulars by heart. Everyone should try this place out.

Average sandwich, below average service. The sandwich had all of the ingredients piled in the middle so almost half of the bread had no filling!
I was going to give them 2 stars but they have sprouts so I gave them an extra star. -
Review from Sevag D.
The best pastrami and corned beef sandwich I've had since moving back from NYC 5 years ago. They make everything fresh and have a good selection and great service. Pick from many different drinks in the fridge and all kinds of different chips, most of which you've never heard of. I like the unique selection. They even have an entire European deli section with all kinds of chocolates and specialty items. Definitely part of my new regular lunch spot list.

This place is a family run place, and the owners work here together. George and Elizabeth are always kind, and George always remembers his customers orders' and exactly how they like it. They always make me feel right at home. The sandwiches are great, and the ingredients are always fresh. They've got a nice imported selection of cheeses, meats, that are german/hungarian/belgian. They also have a nice selection of beer from the same countries. It's so much fun trying to pick which one I want to try next. They also cater, which is great for parties, especiialy oktoberfest, George will even get you kegs! Alpine has never dissapointed.

Thousand Oaks, CA
I forgot sandwiches could be this good. Huge selection, and everything delicious. Great soups, and lots of imported grocery items. If I didn't work 40 miles from home, I would be happy getting lunch here every day. But then I'd weigh 300 pounds, because I can't resist the huge pastrami, corned beef and swiss cheese on rye. Which I recommend with a bag of potato chips.
The people are very nice, too. -

The staff of Mustang Marketing had lunch here today and everyone loved it. The sandwiches are great, the service is friendly, the atmosphere is warm. I have no idea how they do it and charge as little as they do for a sandwich. For those on a budget, I don't think there's a better deadl - anywhere.

Thousand Oaks, CA
Great deli selection on meats and cheeses. Their sandwhiches are scrum-didly-umptious! The gentleman that owns this place is very polite and friendly and there's always some pleasant small talk when I go in there. My wife likes it because they import a lot of little things from Germany that you can't get here in the US, (e.g. candies, baking accessories, seasonings, cuts of meat, etc.), and being that she's German this is a real treat for her! If you're willing to spend a little extra on a sandwich then say as much as you would at a fast food type of place, then you're going to get a whole lot more in quality and taste!

This place is by far amongst my top 5 places to eat in Thousand Oaks. The Rachel gives me sandwichgasms. Not only is the prepared food great, but the imported foods and beverages they have in stock are brilliant. I bought a dessert wine there once and finished it all myself. The candies are irresistable ... I could go on & on. Can NOT say enough good stuff about Alpine. Thanks for years of good food and community spirit, guys :D

This is the best deli. I am German and I can tell you that the German Potato salad is the best here. I would not go anywhere else unless my family was making it. George remembers you and is so friendly.. I just love giving business to a local owned and operated place like this. He even carrys very hard to find items that are from Germany .
My family was thrilled the first time we ate here.. Please go and try this gem of a place. You wont regrete it. . -

Alpine never disappoints. Been eating here for years. The married couple that owns it are super cool and they remember us every time. Awesome, fresh sandwiches, pickles. Very clean. Everything I'd expect from a good deli. Albacore, turkey on squaw bread, pastrami, all solid choices.

Been coming here for a while. George always remembers my name even if it's been quite a few months since my last visit. The only place to come and get some great german hot dogs, smoked bratwurst, liver-pate, and delicious cold-cuts. He gets the best black forest ham and capicola. They make great sandwiches, but so do I at home. I like to get my goodies and go.

I've been coming here for years and their sandwiches never disappoint. The husband and wife owners are both pleasant, and almost always remember me when I come in. They'll make you pretty much whatever you ask for as long as they have the ingredients.

Stopped in for a quick lunch and got one...
This place is located in a stripmall. There was plenty of parking at the lunch hour.
Upon entering the place, it looked like a little liquor store. The counter was covered with an assortment of candies and pasteries from Germany. Along the #4 wall were refrigerators of beverages, icluding several types of beer.
There were.about 6 little tables suited for a party of two. My party was a party of 4. There were no other people eating in. Had there been others, it would have been a little tight.
A little friendly lady. Stood behind the counter. Counter taking orders. Our party orderd the beef soup, chef salad with chicken breast, a salami sandwih w provolone, and a tuna sandwich.
The food arrived at the counter about 5 mintes after the order was placed. In short, the soup was ok, the salad was very basic, the salami sandwich was "phenomental" with a ton of meat, and the tuna was okay.
Prices were reasonable avaeraging ¥7 for the salad and sandwiches.
Most importantly, would I ever come back? Yes... But for a sandwich... -

Rewind about 5 or more years ago when I lived and worked in Thousand Oaks and you would have found me on any given day at Alpine. I usually phoned in my order for pick-up and George would immediately recognize my voice after I would say, "I'd like an order to-go please." He would then say, "Is it a pastrami day or mortadella day?" Because I would either get a hot pastrami & provolone on a French roll with mustard only or a mortadella & provolone on a French roll with lettuce, tomato, mayo and mustard, depending on my mood.... And all I would have to say was pastrami or mortadella... and he knew exactly what to do. Now that's what I call service! Good, simple sandwiches at a small family-owned German deli with a small section of German/European products available to buy... you know, in case you're running low on spaetzle or Nutella. Oh, and they have an interesting selection of German and other types of beer that come in hefty bottles and have high alcohol contents... guaranteed to put a little hair on your chest ;)

After terrible service at Rhineland Deli, we placed a large order here at Alpine. Service is far superior, you can tell the folks at Alpine care about the food. Have purchased items for two different parties and everyone has really liked the food from Alpine.
