Review from Jessica R.
South Lake Tahoe, CA
Being new to South Lake, (but not the Tahoe area) I was a little skeptical about finding a vet in such a small town. I called Sierra first and the receptionist seemed like she could care less about my questions and was not very helpful. I then called Alpine Animal Hospital (which is closer to my house) and the receptionist was extremely helpful and welcomed my many questions. She was able to get me an appointment for my Australian Shepherds second round of shots the same day. When I arrived both me any my Aussie, Delilah, were greeted and assisted very professionally. They have a house cat, (a brown tabby I think) who is very friendly and sleeps on the high counter as you come in. The retail areas were neatly stocked and clean with quality and specialty products. They have an area for complimentary coffee/tea/cocoa and a water fountain for your pet.
The nurse/tech (who's name I cannot remember @ this time) was very warm and was very sweet with my puppy. I will have to call them and get her name and insert it in this review. The exam room was very sterile and clean and the nurse was not offended when I asked if the room had been sterilized prior to Delilahs appointment. She took her time with me answering all of my questions and made sure my 10 week old puppy was comfortable and calm before administering her vaccinations. She explained the vaccinations to me as well as provided me with a book to keep track of Delilahs vaccines. She also gave me a nicely done puppy packet full of training tips and advice along with a complimentary "new puppy" package with coupons and vouchers. She was very knowledgeable and patient. The women at the reception desk promptly took payment and provided me with a invoice and receipt for Delilahs records.
I am happy with the experience we had at this Vet and look forward to bringing Delilah back for her future inoculations. -

Scheduled an appt for my cat to have his teeth removed a few weeks in advance, I didn't even get a reminder phone call so missed his appt. Once I finally got him in, took my baby home and found that they had cut his nails!!!!! No one ever told me that they were going to do this or if it was a required procedure. Regardless, it really upset me and i'm sure it frustrated my cat for weeks. Even though this place is in my neighborhood, I doubt I will take my cats there again.

The largest vet in South Shore, but perhaps the one with the least warmth and highest rates. I've had to bring my suicidal mutt here on a few instances (when she OD'd on Rimadyl and needed a charcoal treatment and then a few years later when she decided to run *through* a barbed wire fence) and didn't feel that the vets on staff were all that empathetic.
However, if you need a vet on a weekend this place is one of the few (if only) open all day Saturday. -

We had been somewhat happy with Alpine, even though the rates are a bit high...they were the closest to our house, and your pet's health isn't really one of those things you can put a price on or shop around for, so we stuck with them for a while, until we had a very bad experience.
So, I go in to buy our normal dog food for our Buddy (he's on a special, expensive food for his sensitive stomach), and they don't have any of that brand (Iams) on the shelf. I ask the receptionist, and it takes her quite a while to figure out that they had stopped carrying it. She doesn't know why, so then it takes her even longer to ask the doctor, and it turns out there was a recall on the food. A month ago. In his file, there is a note from the doctor to switch his food immediately. Huh? Why weren't we notified?
That's bad enough, but here's the kicker: right around the date of the recall, which was for possible salmonella, we brought Buddy in because he was having symptoms which are exactly like those caused by salmonella. I'm not saying he had salmonella...I'm saying it's possible, and the most important thing here is for this vet to connect the dots. How about notifying all those buying this particular food, ESPECIALLY for a dog that has been sick and brought in for your care, for the exact same problems which caused the recall in the first place.
When I expressed my anger at this, they not only gave lame answers (such as "it takes time to go through all the paper files"...even though they have a high-tech computer system), but they also refused to accept any responsibility or admit that they messed up. We'll be leaving this clueless place, and taking Buddy elsewhere from now on.Comment from Kevin W. of Alpine Animal Hospital 11/23/2010

Definitely five stars for Drs. Willits and Korzanowski, who are always very engaged, timely, they are very good about explaining all of the treatment options available and the pluses and minuses of each. And I can't say enough good things about staff, who are very friendly and are just great with my lab.
I've had some less than stellar help from the third doctor (whose name escapes me) on a couple of occasions, so now I ask for Dr. Willits or Dr. Korzanowski -- I'd recommend you do the same. -

While vacationing at South Lake Tahoe for Thanksgiving my little girl (only 9 months old) came down with pancreatitis (which can be fatal). We showed up on this vet's doorstep when they opened the day after Thanksgiving. They did not have any available appointments, but they took her right away and ran tests, diagnosed the problem and immediatly started treatment. I asked the vet if he could treat her enough to get back home to our vet for the hospitalization. Dr. Powell was very understanding and got things going ASAP. The front desk staff was nice, understanding & helpful.
Thanks for saving my baby! -

Finding a vet that is a good fit for you and your pet can be as difficult as choosing a physician. When I first moved to Tahoe I was unsure who to trust with my pets and I must say I have been very impressed with Alpine. They have a caring friendly staff and even offer alternative treatments such as chiropractics! They do have higher fees than others in the area, but you get what you pay for.

I had to bring my sick cat here in an emergency, and I thought the vet and staff here were very accommodating. They really cared for her, and I felt confident that they knew what to do. The office was clean and really nice too. I would recommend this vet to anyone.

I cannot say enough good things about Dr. Willits. We have been taking our dogs there for years. He obviously loves his work, and communicates all options for treatment clearly and compassionately. I've also found the office staff to be extremely pleasant and helpful.

I highly recommend Alpine animal hospital. As a local of SLT, Alpine is our vet for routine visits, but my praise comes especially after our beloved puppy had to have unexpected surgery. Dr. Doering made sure we were well informed and made the right decisions every step of the way. Dr. Doering truly respects the bond people have with their animals. The rest of the staff from the nurses to the receptionists were very attentive, sympathetic, and helpful as well. It seems to me that Alpine has everything a great vet hospital should have.

We love Alpine Animal Hospitol. The entire staff is so nice and friendly and always remember our dogs Timber and Meadow. We almost never have an appointment and have never waited for more than 5 minutes. The nurses and vets are so knowledgeable and helpful even over the phone. They are slightly more expensive than other vets that are farther away, but it is completely worth the few extra bucks. Very highly recommended!
