Great spot for a business lunch or a casual dinner. We come here about once a week. Love the consistently good food, service, and location.
I usually get their pulled pork sandwich (one of their specials) with coleslaw and make an Arnold Palmer with their homemade lemonade and ice tea. Doesn't get much better. -

Alphy's is an AG staple as far as restaurants go. This is one of those places that's small, family own, has high standards, and most of the time has a decent size line (a good thing).
I usually do the club sandwich, but I've tried a few other things front he menu. I've always been treated very well and enjoy the effort put forth by the owner. The food is delicious and I think it's because they don't use a distributor like a lot of places, to get produce, meat, and bread. Everything seems locally sourced.
Very reasonably priced and a great place to go with friends. I've brought my dog also and it was no worries.
I will keep coming back with friends. -

One of my favorite places to grab lunch. The staff is always incredibly friendly and are great in the kitchen. Great salads that are difficult to finish by yourself they are so big. If you are looking for a great place to eat while driving through the village this is it.

Breakfast sandwich, fried egg, bun, spinach, bacon , cheese and aioli for $5.95. Best damn sandwich in the world, been eating them for at least five years. Always crave em and when i pass thru ag i make sure to eat one. You should too! They have a full menu but i cant get past the sandwich. Outdoor patio is fabulous on a warm day. This may be the best restaurant in arroyo grande, as a former resident i cant think of a better one!

I've been super hesitant to write this review, because truth be told, I've only ever had one thing from their menu (The Oriental salad, which is excellent 100% of the time), but eat here at least once a week (I work upstairs). So, this review is based pretty much on the service and atmosphere at Alphy's. From the first time my husband brought me here a few years ago, I've always felt welcome at Alphy's. As I've gotten to know Lance and the crew over the years, that feeling hasn't changed. They're always super friendly to me and anyone I've ever been with. I always feel like they're stoked that I'm giving them business.
The lunch time wait can be long at times, and sometimes it is hard to get a table. If you wait until about 1 or so (after the rush), it usually moves a little quicker. Lunch is a little pricey (about $10), but I think it's worth it. The food is fresh and made to order and on a nice day, sitting on the patio is such a nice change of pace (the crew and patio are dog friendly, too!).
Overall, 4.5 stars! Try it if you get a chance. -

Amazing food and great coffee/espresso. I had one of the best Americanos there, and the BLTA sandwich was so delicious. Perfectly done with fresh avocado, thick cut bacon, and a delicious garlic aioli. The tri tip quesadilla is a must try - with guacamole, peppers, tomatoes, and olives stuffed inside with the tri tip and cheese. Loved it!

Terrible service and the food doesn't make up for that fact. They made us feel as if we were inconveniencing them. Very awkward experience.

Used to go here quite a bit back when I lived in Oceano. Probably my favorite lunch spot in the Village of Arroyo Grande. They have a pretty serious burger and pulled pork sandwich--which they don't always have so get it when you can. They don't have any fries but I really like their coleslaw.
Great no frills lunch. Employees are pretty friendly. -

I never would have stepped foot in Alphy's if I hadn't had such an awful experience at Old Village Grill, but I'm really so glad I did. We will now be regular customers there for sure!
Firstly, our experience:
I brought my whole family and our amazing friend here for a leisurely lunch. The menu is short, but simple. My hubby and I got the chicken sandwiches, our friend got a burger, and our kids split the kid's quesadilla. Prices were very reasonable. All 5 of us ate for $30. Everyone's food was outstanding and the portions were giant. My chicken sandwich easily had a half an avocado on it and it blended so well with the other sauces and cheese on the sandwich. I loved it. The coleslaw was a hit around the table. However, as the afternoon went on, we watched other people's food get brought out to and we wanted what they got in addition to our food. Everything looked amazing. The fish tacos looked amazing, the salads (which I am generally unimpressed by) were hearty and looked mouth-wateringly good.
My general feel of the place:
Unlike Old Village Grill, they have a few menu items and they do them VERY well. They don't skimp out and they really give you what you pay for. Their burgers were made with really high quality meat, their produce is fresh and nothing felt wilted or browned, and their sauces were nicely balanced. They even serve an awesome selection of beer, including growlers of the hard-to-find Figeroa Mountain Brewing Company beers. They don't nickle-and-dime you as all of the meals come with all appropriate sides (and plenty of them) so you don't need to add this and that to complete your meal, it's hearty and complete as it is! They also have diverse and attractive kids choices, not just smaller versions of their regular menu. They have plain quesadilla, pbj, and hot dogs. Chances are, kids are going to like 1 of those things and they're things that aren't on their normal menu. The owners clearly thought out this menu really well and it shows. The atmosphere was pleasant with many outdoor tables and a casual, fun feel. By far, this is my best dining experience in AG.
I went into this place not expecting to be NEARLY as impressed as I really was, but I'm so glad I had such a bad experience at Old Village Grill, because it brought my closer to Alphy's! -

YOU NEED TO GO #1. YOU NEED TO GO NOW. We've all had that dreaded situation when sudden we realized we should have made that pit stop when it was just a notion of bodily release. But alas, the situation is now fully critical and each step you take is one step closer to full public humiliation.
Alpha's Broiler was my savior that afternoon while I waiting for a friend who was getting fitted for a wedding. I walked in and quickly ordered a shot of Espresso, paid quickly with exact cash and hit the pisser. RELIEF. Ah magnificent relief.
The relief alone is not the reason for the high rating. You see Alphy's was literally minutes from closing. Everything was up and the staff was mopping up and finishing up cleaning the kitchen. They could have easily said they were no longer serving, but their spidey-sense could tell I needed to go and go now.
The espresso was excellent. Strong, but not bitter. A nice caffeine pick up as well. The only thing missing from this perfect beverage and perfect service was a little sugar package with it like Europe. But thanks to the heroic staff we did not turn me away and prevented my public humiliation. -

ehhh skip for breakfast if you want egg whites. I ask for egg whites on my egg sandwich and they told me they don't have egg whites. Usually breakfast places have no problem taking out the yolk but I guess they prefer not to take the extra step. I had heard good thing but my experience not so customer friendly.

Really wanted to love this place, but just didn't. Everything I tried (BLTA, Minestrone soup, and Caesar salad) was just okay. (Note: Caesar salad dressing is egg-less).
My husband had a burger which he thought was tasty, but he's had better. Other people in our party hated that they do not sell fries to go with the burgers, but that is to be expected from a place like this.
The ingredients that are used are of quality, but they just didn't quite come together in the finished product. Also, I did find a hair in my salad and that was gross, but I'm not the type of person to disregard everything else just because of a bad incident.
In terms of sandwich places, there are better to be had. -

Oh Alphy's, you have my heart! This is the hot spot for lunch for people who work close the the village. I enjoy walking from my office, over the bridge, and to the village for Alphy's! I am not very diverse in what I order, since I have ordered the same thing every time. I am a huge advocate for the fish tacos! What can I say, they are simply the best. You get two heaping tacos, covered in shredded lettuce, tomato, cheese, salsa, and another special sauce, on corn tortillas. I have been a number of times with friends and family so I have seen all the other amazing dishes they serve. The pastrami sandwich is great. All salads are huge and mouth watering. The nicest part of Alphy's are the tables outside, umbrella covered. A great village hot spot for beach bums!

This breathtaking bistro, set up in the heart of the Village is perfection in food and service. They are a friendly staff who greet all the customers by name, and serve up the biggest and best tasting salads and sandwiches. They have just added dinner hours to handle the huge success, as everyone who eats here comes back for more.
Breakfast starts at 7:00 am and consists of the best egg sandwich, anywhere. The gigantic rustic roll is the ideal manager for the fried egg, fresh spinach, roasted garlic aioli, bacon and cheddar cheese. It is big enough to feed two. I live for this, but have to make a point to get there before 11:00 am, when the menu switches to lunch. They also have a wrap with scrambled eggs, green onions, tomatoes, and cheese for those watching their carbs. All menu items are made as you order them and teaming with flavor.
For lunch, everything is spectacular. My daughter is on a special diet and literally cannot eat anything, as she is to avoid bread, sugar, etc., but she can eat at Alphy's and is a happy little camper. She prefers the salmon salad with its tossed greens, grilled salmon, tomato, egg, and olives. The salmon is cooked flawlessly and does not overwhelm the greens. I am a freak for the Oriental - made entirely of shredded cabbage (which I normally do not like) but seasoned and tossed to perfection with almonds, scallions, carrots, chicken breast, crispy wantons all encased in a ideal sesame ginger dressing.
Gary likes the manliness of the philly and the tri-tip sandwiches, which are huge, using the highest quality of meat and dripping with fantastic sauces. The pulled pork sandwich is a work of art. They are served with Alphy's coleslaw that is good for you and delicious. He is also partial to their sweet and fresh strawberry lemonade, an ideal deflection from soda. But if beer and wine is what you like as a liquid accompaniment to your meal, they have that too.
Alphy's specialties include Baja fish taco's, which are flawlessly seasoned grilled fish, wrapped in a tortilla of love and deliciousness. The grilled ahi sandwich is served in foccacia bread (or in a wrap) and is the biggest piece of tuna I have ever had the joy of inhaling. The reason the men in our family return repeatedly is for the biggest and unsurpassed hamburgers. The secrets are the bread (they have the baker make it especially for them) the amazing sauces but most importantly, the consistency. The same guy makes all the food, every time. And he is good, so good I have asked him if he could come and live with us. (He politely declined stating that his wife might not approve). Dinner is served until 9:00 pm with the regular menu and some specials. -

My wife and I escaped an overly crowded Strawberry Festival today and ducked into Alphy's for lunch. This was my first time, despite the fact that they've been there for a couple of years.
We were pleasantly surprised by the quality of food. After ordering, we retreated to the outside patio to sip a beer and watch the hordes of people stroll by. After a few minutes, our food was delivered to us and I was immediately impressed with the amount of food they give you. I ordered the "Whaler" which is a seared ahi tuna sandwich on homemade foccacia bread. It was delicious and came with your choice of salad or cole slaw. I opted for the huge portion of cole slaw, which was perfectly made.
My wife had the soup and salad which I sampled. The roasted vegetable soup was amazing as was the homemade balsamic vinegar dressing that came with the salad.
The prices are fair and the food is outstanding. I feel guilty it took me so long to visit Alphy's, but I definitely will be going back. -

I've lived in the central coast for over a decade and I shamefully admit that today was the first time I've ever dined at Alphy's Broiler. Thank goodness for a good woman who likes good food!
The first thing that caught my eye upon entering was the simplicity of their menu. It wasn't over stuffed but looked like it had a little bit of what anybody could want, and it looked like you could tailor it any which way.
I'm sure that simplicity also helped with the speed of the order. When we got there, the line was out the door. Before I knew it, we were sitting down and they were calling out the order number to the order right before ours.
I ordered The Burger plus Jack and Bacon with Slaw. My first thought when it arrived at the table? "Even if I cut this in half, how the heck am I supposed to eat this?" That burger was a monster. You definitely get more than your dollar's worth in burger. The cheese was melted well and hugging the patty. The bacon was crisp, thick, and flavorful. The sauce (I'm not sure what it was exactly) was unique in aroma and flavor and delicious. I've always been a fan of coleslaw, but haven't found many places that make it to my liking. Either the cabbage is too finely chopped, lacking flavor, runny, or just plan not good. The Slaw at Alphy's was amazing and refreshing and just the perfect amount of sweet.
When I was first told that I would soon be taken to lunch at this establishment, I came to yelp (of course) and noticed that the number one comment about Alphy's is the staff's friendliness. I can totally understand why. After our short lunch, I left happy.
I'll definitely be going there more often and hope to try everything on the menu.Listed in: Local Delights

I eat out at least twice a day every day. I have been to Alphy's more times than I can count and if I'm staying in Arroyo Grande, then it's right out my back door. The sandwiches are always great. The first time I went, I had the grilled chicken sandwich, which was awesome. California can't barbecue, but they sure can grill some chicken, and Alphy's is no exception. The next few times, I ordered the California Chicken Sandwich. The last time I went, which was last week, I had the BLTA. It was good, but my brother insisted on that choice, and it didn't have enough bacon on it. I hope this better explains that I've been to Alphy's several times and I haven't had anything I didn't like except the Lay's Potato Chips, which I never even open.
Pros:
-Portion sizes are huge
-Sandwich and cole slaw/salad for around $7
-Nice to sit on the patio on a beautiful day
-Friendly service always

Alphy's is a great place for a nice, casual lunch while visiting this area. The food is excellent, prices are moderate and the staff makes it a fun time for everyone.
It's a little small on the inside but the outdoor patio is superb on a nice day!
We were a party of 4 and we had a fish taco, a Chicken Ranchero Salad, a pastrami sandwich and a pulled pork sandwich among us. EVERYONE was happy with their choices.
The place is also pet friendly. They will provide water dishes for them!
It's a neat place that you will enjoy! Try it!

Alphy's is a great place to get a quick lunch. All the items are unique and fresh. The food is all made on site. These guys do a dang good job for the price. Everything I've had was so fresh, the salad was amazing. There was a great level of attention to the combination of items in the salad. My GF had the tri-tip with the bbq sauce. In choosing the items we got it was apparent that they like their Honey. I mentioned that to the owner and his reply was great. ... " that's because we use honey to sweeten and not sugar."
I'm all for that, fighting an issue with diabetes, I know that Honey is a much more complex carb than refined sugar. So big kudos for this...
And I have to agree, that Lemonade is really good. It was a bit sweet for me, but since I stay light on sweets, it probably would be just perfect for most. I chose to mix my tea, which was freshly made and a bit of the strawberry lemonade. I noticed that most of the customers were locals. If you can get your locals to come and stay, you got a good deal goin on.
Only set back is you may need to park a bit down the road, but this is tourist town, there is plenty of parking behind the antique shops. -

We were completing our road trip back from SoCal and around 5pm needed to eat- thanks to the cool Yelp on our cellphone, Alphy's popped up as being close and good.
We were warmly greeted by the staff and the owner Alphy, and thoroughly enjoyed our Chicken Quesadilla and Fish Tacos.
There's indoor seating for around 30 people, and maybe about 15 outside? Service was fast, food tasted very fresh [but thankfully not Baja Fresh !] and I doubt they used bad oils/fats in the prep .
A very nice find at short notice for some hungry travellers,
I see people complaining about the hours etc, but I suppose if they don't do much evening trade then opening for breakfast onwards through 7pm is reasonable. -

Solid lunch joint in the Village. I've lived near the Village for many months now but for some reason had never come here, despite their good reviews here, and the fact they always have a line out the door around lunchtime.
Quite glad I gave it a chance. It has a line out the door for good reason. I ordered the BLTA. Super crisp lettuce, perfectly cooked bacon and fresh tasting avo & tomato. Served on focaccia with a yummy but not overpowering aioli. I went with the cole slaw (you have the option of that or salad, and get a small bag of Lays potato chips, which I am ambivalent about). Probably some of the best cole slaw I've ever had - but it may not appeal to you if you don't like it on the sweet side.
More points for being quick despite being VERY busy. Also I think the cashier was the owner - he was super pleasant and I mentioned I was on my lunch break from work and he said "Well we know you value your limited time, so if you ever want to call us in advance so you don't have to wait, go for it & here's a takeout menu." This is how you treat customers.
This seems like a fresher and potentially healthier option than the other options in the Village like Branch St. Deli, Klondike, Village Grill, and Ginas etc. I would definitely recommend it and will be back. -

The Alphy's crew is 100+% committed to not just your satisfaction, but your TOTAL HAPPINESS.
Everything is GREAT. We especially like the breakfast sandwich, with bacon, of course - super quality ingredients and flavor, what a great way to get your day started! Their pulled pork sandwich with slaw is sooooo satisfying. Guaranteed you will come back if you are local or passing through. Not so much for indoor seating, but with the weather in Arroyo Grande, who cares? One of THE BEST!
And... if you bring your dog (okay on the patio), they'll even bring out water and a biscuit! How can you beat that?! That's right, YOU CAN'T!

My wife and I like to try a different exit off of 101 each time we drive from SJC to LA, places like Alphy's definitely explain why.
Considering the size of the lunch crowd on a Thursday, I'm a bit hard pressed to say it's a "secret". It's located at the north end of downtown with parking available in the lots behind the shops.
You'll hear folks describe the food there as "fresh" a good deal, because it is. Mostly "Californian" style (things like Bacon, Lettuce, Tomato and Avocado sandwiches on home made foccacia), with your choice of salad or slaw. Servings are also very generous, with a friendly staff.
We'll be trying other exits in the future, but Alphy's definitely sets the bar a lot higher than most of the stops we visit. -

After a long day hiking in Los Padres National Forest (mmm... waterfalls!), we were starving and found this place by chance. After checking Yelp to make sure this place didn't suck too much, we decided to take our chances.
The food is what the spouse and I call "Californicated" American food. Despite that, the Philly Cheesesteak was incredibly tasty. Not that it's a real Philly Cheesesteak; however, it's so rare to see those outside of Philly (really, who wants cheese whiz?) that it's forgivable. The onions were cooked just right (until they're dead, dead, dead!), the meat was perfectly cooked, and the bread was good. They give you Lay's potato chips, which is a shame, but not everything can be perfect. The salad is one of those fancier green salads that I always hate, but everyone else seems to love.
The spouse tried the tri tip, which was just okay. The owner (manager?) said that he recommended either the burger or the Cheesesteak if you've never eaten there before. -

Oh Alphy's...how much do I love thee? This is the perfect place to stop en route from San Francisco to LA (or the reverse - who am I kidding, we try to hit it both directions). While others opt to speed down the 5 in order to get from one place to the other as fast as possible, it's the food at Alphy's, not the view from the 101, that forces us to take our time.
My favorite is the taco salad. Unlike other salads by the same name, this one doesn't sit in a deep fried shell. Rather there is a smattering of chips on top. The real highlight is the dressing - some sort of chipolte ranch nectar of the gods. The best part is, the sucker doesn't get soggy. Since I usually gobble one up there AND take one for the road (go ahead, judge me), this is of utmost importance. Sure they put the dressing on the side but you would think that the beans would still lead to one big pile of mush. Somehow Alphy's figured out how to get it done.
As an added bonus, this place is also a few doors away from Doc Bernsteins Ice Cream Lab - so you're set for dessert as well.
The only reason Alphy's doesn't have 5 stars is because I can't quite seem to master when they are open. They are closed on random days and go away on vacation and shut down for a couple of weeks at a time. I hate being disappointed. -

Arroyo Grande, CA
Good food, fast and VERY friendly service.
Dog friendly seating outside.
In that ugly newer shopping complex/building on the edge of the village, not quaint, patio is up against street w/ traffic, but the food is quality and yummy, it's convenient, and the service is fast and very friendly.
The Whaler is excellent, It is a seared tuna sandwich, which means if you're afraid of a little pink fish in the middle, it might not be for you, but the menu has lots of other yummy sandwiches. I've had the pastrami, I thought the pastrami itself was some of the best I'd had, the rest of the sandwich was a little plain, maybe a different bread or mustard would spice it up some. Good serve-yourself strawberry lemonade. -

We ate here a few weekends ago and at outside on the patio. The restaurant is pet friendly which was great since we brought our Yorkie Lucy with us. We decided we would share the Fish Tacos and an Oriental Salad. 3 large broiled Ahi Tuna tacos for $9. Since the Ahi was broiled I assumed they would be cooked more than it's suppose to be. My personal preference is not to eat Ahi while it's pink. I took the tacos home and re-warmed the tuna and ate them. DELICIOUS! I know, I know, I ruined it. Ok, the Oriental Salad for $8 was HUGE and DELICIOUS. The cabbage was crispy and well covered in scallions, carrots, chicken breast, almonds, cilantro, crispy wonton strips
and tossed in their own sesame ginger dressing. Im not a fan of salads but I've been craving this salad again every since. Well worth the visit. Sit on the patio on a beautiful day.......Life is good! -

Yesterday my husband and I felt like a trip to Alphy's. When we first moved to the Central Coast, their hours were limited. Now that they're open till the early evening, it's easier for us to eat here.
Since we weren't very hungry, we split their tri-tip sandwich. The young man taking our order very bluntly stated: "There's a split plate fee." I laughed. He said: "No, I'm serious. There's a split plate fee." How much I asked. Now I can't remember...around $2? Anyway, he really was serious.
So we still chose to pay $2 more. For this, we got two bags of chips, which I didn't want so I left mine on the table. The good part of the $2 extra was that we both got large portions of their pineapple juice flavored cole slaw. It was good! The tri-tip sandwich was OK (the grilled bread made it for me, but the meat was too medium-well done for me).
Another young man who brought our plates to us - Michael - had more polished customer service skills. He was very personable and checked on us and other customers after he'd served us. -
