Delicious, ever-changing flavors served by friendly staff in a welcoming environment, for a good cause. What more could you ask for? Perhaps being open past 8pm / October.

Love this place. They are very generous with their samples and have a lot of very delicious flavors. My current favorite is the Apple Pie, which is cooked apple cinnamon apples, carmel, pie crust, in a vanilla ice cream. They have some pretty good seasonal flavors at the moment so if you get a chance, check it out. Keep in mind that they will probably close for the winter starting November or December. Also, for those of you who are sprinkle lovers, this is a great place because you get to enjoy as much of it as your heart desires.
Bottom line, it's a simple ice cream shop with a good selection of flavors. Nothing too fancy but they do keep the taste interesting to keep me coming back. -

Eating ice cream sometimes could be a sin but eating ice cream for a good cause definitely makes anybody feel great! This is a non-profit organization and the girls who work here are simply amazing!
We tried their autumn flavor or caramel apple pie and we actually could taste the pie crust and sugared apple inside! The smallest scoop is 4oz and only $4.
I can't wait to go back and try other flavors! All for a good cause of course :) -

VIsited Alphabet Scoop after volunteering at the Father's Heart soup kitchen next door. Tried a scoop of the mint chip which, to be completely honest, was not the best ice cream I've ever had. It WAS, however, the best cause I've ever supported by buying ice cream! Extra star for that. Read their website -- it's neat to see how they are mentoring teens by training them in the shop.
I'll definitely be back and will be trying a different flavor next time. There seem to be a lot of flavors Yelpers rave about, so just need to find the right one! -

Wow, yelp you taught me so much about this place.
I was going to say was that the ice cream is pretty much the shizzz and at a good price.
It is so tempting to get two scoops. The fellow behind the counter was like are you sure, they are big. WELL OF COURSE IM SURE ITS ONLY 50cents MORE for the second scoop.
I was very wrong.
Next time, my friend and I both got one scoop... still a lot. A children's scoop is probably the way to go. In conclusion, yummers -

I love this place, with the bottom of my heart! They make each of their icecreams with love! It's the perfect texture and creaminess! Prices are great and they give you heaping scoops!
It is ran by a non-profit Christian society and the young boys and girls working there are working after school. I love that I'm helping them out by buying their ice cream. I am excited that they recently had a makeover by Macy's, they deserved it!
Strawberry, pistachio, mint chip, and their raspberry swirl with dark chocolate dispersed inside...very very good!
They also have coffee, teas and hot chocolate!
You can also try their flavors, they give it to you in the cutest little cup and scoop the ice cream with a melon baller....soooo cute! -

Ice cream: OK. I had the razzle-dazzle-- white chocolate with raspberry and chocolate chunks. Tasty, but not awesome.
People: Nice.
But they only get two stars because they offered me a bible. The guy said, "You look like you need a bible." and I paid and left really quickly. I generally don't like people trying to save my soul when all i want is a bit of ice cream on a hot day. -

If you're like me, you'll stop by Alphabet Scoop @ 3:55pm and assume the joint has been tragically shuttered. Alas, Alphabet Scoop opens at 4, when it opens at all (the store opened for the season on 4.15 and holds pretty limited hours, only on particular days). Payment options are minimal, but with remarkably friendly staff and 2 generous homemade scoops (ginger and Macy's cherries jubilee) in a cup (cone option if you're so inclined) for $4.25, who can complain?

Alphabet Scoop is a very unassuming ice cream shop in the alphabet of east village. The decor is very sterile and it sits half a story above the street. The ice cream is all made in house, with a healthy variety of standard flavors. I like this do-it-yourselfed-ness.
However, I think the ice cream suffers from a mix of lower quality ingredients and ice cream machines that render the frozen treat filled with a crystalline structure that is more ice than cream.
The highlight if the store is Roberto, an upbeat young chap manning the booth with charisma and class. The kiddie scoop was plenty for a warm afternoon post lunch. If I walk by and see him in there, I'd stop by for another kiddie scoop in a second.
Roberto: 5 stars
Store: 3 stars
Ice Cream: 2.5 stars -

I got a couple scoops of their homemade cookies and cream ice cream. It tasted like they used real Oreo cookies. The staff was nice and friendly and the place wasn't too busy.

This place is sadly underrated. It's a gem in the East Village, offering delicious ice cream flavors like dulce de leche, white chocolate with raspberry swirl with chocolate chunks (or Razzle Dazzle), peach melba and ginger.
The flavor of the week was Razzle Dazzle so my scoop was just $3 instead of $3.75. The scoop that I got was huge - it's probably twice as large as scoops at Grom at half the price. They offer free sprinkles too. -
Review from Rachel G.
I hate to say anything negative about this place because it's a non-profit, but the ice cream tastes like Edy's and the decor is a bit tacky. The staff was very sweet and dog-friendly, but that doesn't really make up for the ice cream.
I'll probably be back because it's near my boyfriend's apartment and there is really a dearth of ice cream choices in the East Village (WTF? I don't get this). I was there last summer, so maybe it's gotten better since then? -

As I am spoiled when it comes to ice cream due to the fact that my best friend owns her own shop and everything there is homemade (i suppose that makes me biased as well) I really wasn't impressed with this place.
I give them two stars instead of one due to the fact that they were friendly and helpful and my girl friend said the butterpecan was delcious. I had the chocolate brownie in a sugar cone and not only were there no brownie chunks nor did it taste like chocolate but the cone was stale and did not taste good. My other girl friend got the mint cookie and although at first we thought the idea of self serve sprinkles was awesome it proved to be a pain and quite messy. Also her waffer cone was stale as well.
I would not go back except to get a free sample. -

What a sad place. The kids look depressed and year after year they hire a miserable manager. I took my 2 year old in there and I told him we were going to buy 2 pints. We asked for a few samples and I insisted on him giving it to my kid first. He seemed to have a problem w/ that and he didnt say one word to her. No interaction w/ my sweet child what so ever. I told him to keep up the friendly attitude sarcastically and he doesn't even make eye contact. I didnt leave a tip and even tho its half a block from me, I would hate to go there again. This place is bad experience, they dont play music, everything that an ice cream parlor shouldn't be. Especially when you promise your kid an ice cream. Apart from that, they lack basic flavors like chocolate and pistachio. They dont stick to their business hours and run this place w/o any professionalism whatsoever.

This place is great because it is a non-profit establishment, helping kids stay off the street. AWESOME!!! However, the ice cream cones were super stale! The ice cream does taste homemade, but I feel it lacks substantial flavor. They do, however, not skimp on the samples, so you are able to try until your heart content. Prices are excellent too!!!
I would go back in order to support the cause and try new flavors. Maybe Alphabet Scoop can enhance the taste of the ice cream a little bit more...throw a little more chocolate in that Snickers flavor...it won't hurt. -

Yesterday I had the pleasure of stopping by Alphabet Scoop, Father's Heart Ministries youth investment venture, after volunteering next door at the soup kitchen/food pantry. The not-so tiny storefront was immaculately clean; the young men behind the counter (no more than 16 y/o between the three of them) were incredibly professional and gracious, and didn't (thankfully) give me a side-long glance after ordering a "child's size" portion of mint chocolate chip. (Please note: all servings default to a cup if you don't ask them). If you in romping distance of Tompskins Square Park, stop around the corner for some home-made lip-lapping green-tea ice cream with honey drizzle (I was so torn!). Or, if the mood strikes you, any of the our 13 odd flavors that AS boasts. The future never looked so sweet. :)

i live for the ice cream here. if your not familiar, get familiar. alpha scoop is run by the most nice, fun kids around. they learn responsibility and life lessons by making some of the worlds best ice cream in this nonprofit ice cream shop.
the ice cream is always fresh and made with natural ingredients. its always super creamy and stays that way even when buying a pint.
to boot, the prices here are crazy low, even more incentive to leave a hefty tip for the hard working students.
some flavors not to miss: apple pie (seasonal), pumpkin pie (seasonal), peanut butter chocolate, butter pecan, and of course the classic cookies n cream, and mint chip.
there are few places i would promote with such vigor. i really love this place, and i am sure after one visit you will to :-) -

A true gem in the East Village... the razzle dazzle w/ caramel was delicious! What's even more impressive is their mission of employing kids (a volunteer adult also works)... awesome idea!

Do you like your ice-cream with a socially concious twist? This 11th. Street store front helps kids and makes homemade ice cream. Great combo right? The Father Heart Ministries employs teens to create better prospects for their future. Alphabet Scoop has irregular hours as I have passed many times and they are closed. Friday about 2:30 bingo. With cute names like street haiku a kind of rocky road and about average prices, I had the street haiku and chocolate cheesecake. The serving was gigantic and quite good as the ice cream is home made with about 16 flavors total.

the only thing better than the ice cream here, is the scoop's driving concept. As a non profit, alphabet scoop uses its proceeds to give back to the community. the ice cream is homemade, the teens that manage the store are incredibly friendly and helpful. oh, and they take suggestions for future flavors!

Never mind the fact that it is an ice cream shop that supports mentoring of local youth. Never mind the fact that people who serve you the ice cream always are friendly and helpful with picking out the flavor. Never mind that the sprinkles are unli--wait for it...--mited. The ice cream itself is fantastic, and that should be good enough for this little Alphabet City gem to earn its 5 stars. The portions are very generous, and price is fair. Plus, with each scoop you buy, you can trust that it's going to a good cause to help the community right around it. That, my friends, is having ice cream and eating it too. I'm partial to strawberry 'cause it's always my favorite, but try Razzle Dazzle Raspberry as well! (white chocolate and ice cream)

Summer's coming (sometime?), and I'm already checking out all the many great ice cream places downtown. A definite favorite is Alphabet Scoop - a nonprofit job training program for at-risk youth, it also has the best prices (and portions!) around. Best flavor: raspberry & white chocolate razzle dazzle.

Love their mission statement, its a feel good purchase, but 2 stars for the actual ice cream. It didn't melt which makes me highly suspicious of whats in this dessert. I think their best flavor is the white chocolate raspberry truffle, the cookies and cream left me disappointed. I wish I could give a half a star for their kiddie cup option.

Review from Erica L.
Good ice cream at a great price for a great cause. What else do you need? This is a nonprofit, mission-based store. Don't expect fancy gelato and gourmet ingredients. The store definitely has a broad range of flavors (I sampled the ginger and bought the cookies & cream - the former was a little too gingery but the C&C was great). I would absolutely recommend this place to anyone.

I really can't say enough about Alphabet Scoop. It has ALL of the ingredients that make for a perfect dessert in NYC: amazing ice cream flavors, trendy location (east village), welcoming/friendly and warm service, bright décor. I will definitely be visiting again with friends sometime soon!!

In a city like New York, you can have endless debates about the best place to get any given type of food. But generous portions, inventive flavors and exceptionally high quality make Alphabet Scoop my favorite spot on the island for ice cream. Their classic flavors are all first-rate (I'm especially fond of their strawberry and their mint chip), but their more unorthodox flavors are what really set them apart: Razzle Dazzle (a house specialty combining raspberry and chocolate) was sold out today, so I went for a cone of ginger, instead. Local teens make all the ice cream in-house, and when they're behind the counter they seem to be as excited about the flavors they've concocted as the customers. If you're in or around Union Square for lunch or dinner, it's definitely worth a walk over for dessert.

Just went to Alphabet Scoop for the first time tonight. The ice cream may not be the best in the city, but it's pretty darn good. The staff are friendly, knowledgeable, and obviously care a lot about their work and their craft. (When we were there, the main ice cream maker, who also works the counter, ran a possible future flavor by us to see what we thought.) The place even makes eating ice cream virtuous -- money from the store goes to support a faith-based nonprofit that provides direct services (soup kitchen, GED classes) and other empowerment services.
