This feels like my home away from home. The staff are warm and friendly and so are the people who use this facility. The workout facilities are first class and never too crowded. If you swim laps you usually can find a lane (as long as you are willing to share.) I can't imagine a better place to get healthy in mind, body and spirit.

Beautiful place to come to get your workout done. The grounds are immaculate, and the entrance to the JCC just had another makeover, adding even more ambiance.
The gym is absolutely awesome, and well maintained. The machines are basically brand new as of a few months ago, replete with TV's, plug ins for iPods, etc.
It is not a great big huge gym, but what is there is clean, pleasant, and positive. Staff is accomodating and willing to answer any questions.
And hey, on your way in, 80% of the attendants at the front desk entrance are genuinely happy to see you!!
Thumbs up!! -

This place is great!
I'm reviewing the fitness center but they also have a school and many community programs to check out. I am the resident pool shark so I'm all about the aquatics ...and the pool is the ONLY one in the area that has lap lanes open at almost all times of the day. The summer is a little hectic but easy to work your schedule around. The upstairs fitness center has all new equipment. Great staff. I love this place for more reasons than will fit on a Yelp review...but to sum it up If you live in the area this place is a must. -

This isn't la fitness, but it's a nice replacement.
I've had a Ballys pass and la fitness pass in the past, but somehow love this place more than both of those.
It's more family oriented, the classes are free with your membership, and the staff is fantastic. Very nice people.
The equipment isn't top of the line, but it's good. I wish they had more ellipticals, because I don't like the ones they have very much. Only like 3 if them are the style I like. If you plan on lifting weights... good luck. They only have 1 bench.
The pool is fantastic and bball court is cool too. -

I've been a member for nearly 2 years (and no, I'm not Jewish) and have been really pleased with the facility. I joined because my kid goes to preschool there and with it came a gym membership. Never crowded, clean, good selection of classes. The pool is really nice with a large wading pool for the kids. We live in it during the summer.
The pre-school is excellent. The kids are well-cared-for and my son really enjoys it. Though there is a religious aspect to the program, the values are not so much fire and brimstone, but be a good person, be nice to others and give to charity. We could all use a bit of that. -

DA JCC...this is not just any gym this is da JCC. The enjoyment derived from the JCC is substantial. The facility has all the goodies that any well rounded training center should possess.
Heated outdoor swimming pool
free weights, machine weights, treadmills, cycles, etc. etc.
classes galore (pilates, krav mada, yoga among others)
a library
sauna and whirlpool
and two full count indoor basketball courts.
The basketball courts are the real highlight for me though. There are free run games on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. The games tend to call a variety of talent to the court, so all sorts of basketball skill sets show up to play. The best part of this inclusive environment though is the opportunity to play against some guys who are in their fifties or even sixties. These men can not be taken lightly since winning and losing is taken very seriously, so much so that the whining and hollering resulting from a loss seems utterly childless when coming from a man who is old enough to be my dad. Plus those bastards play dirty and cry to hog heaven when they happen have a foul called against them. Nothing like a geriatric baller' talkin shit' and offering little tidbits of rhetoric like:
"If you try that again I'll throw your ass to the ground." or,
"It's about damn time you started setting those screens."
Right, like that's all I want to do all day is set up pick and roll plays for your crusty ass, just so your lumbering body will get fouled as you jump a total of two inches off the ground. I just can't wait for one of them to make a lay up and say: "That's how we do it old-school youngster." Oh well, basketball brings the child out in everyone it seems.
Enough about basketball though, I shall discuss the "vibe." Most gyms I've attended are meat markets and this one is no exception except I see grannies working out and hitting on some old guys who outmatch my strength ten fold. Go Grannie, get your game on. Love is eternal, indeed. While I do miss the scantily clad ladies sweating it up I'd have to say that the abundance of seniors and families makes the "vibe" very relaxed. Not many people trying to show off their sculpted muscles here, a welcome comfort as I attempt to shed my butter roll hips of love from all the good food I eat.
So the criteria is fulfilled. Grannies and Grandpas kicking my sorry out of shape ass all over the weight room and basketball court, families of all types utilizing the swimming pool in the heat, and regular blokes like myself trying to stay in shape. -

As much as I wish there was a Catholic Community Center, you gotta hand it to the folks here: this is a nice set up.
Open to everyone in the community, this place does seem like a really well managed place that offers fitness options, community, etc. Look online for more details.
Since this place is 5 blocks from my home, I opt to swim here (versus driving all the way down to the Belmont Pool).
The place offers $5/session swims in a beautiful, clean, 6 lane, 50 meter pool. The sessions are sold in 10 increments ($50 dollars for a book of 10). Great hours, and lifeguard on staff all hours during opening. I have yet to hit it when it is crowded.
Although I'm not sure what the memberships cost here to use the gym, it'll definitely set you back more than your 24 hour fitness membership, but definitely offers an upgrade to the stinky pit/meat markets of the 24 hour/Bally's/LA Fitness gym options in Long Beach.

Conveniently located in a large modern facility, the Alpert JCC offers so much for all age groups. My kids have thrived at the excellent ECE pre-school, have had great summer adventures at Camp Komaroff, and taken part in so many other activities from swimming to ballet to basketball seminars taught by NBA veterans. Adults have the gym, JFCS (family services), current events speaker series, along with several charitable organizations housed within the facility that do so much. The center is always vibrant and humming, and the sense of joy and happiness is palpable within the corridors of this tremendous resource for the Greater Long Beach area.

My whole family luvs the JCC. It's the best kept secret in LB, we spend most of our nights in the summer at the pool with the kids. The gym is upgraded yet again and is a non threatening place to work out. We've been members for over 4 years now and had two birthday parties there for our kids with great success. Many of our friends have joined. Not being Jewish has ever been a concern. All our welcome! Many of our Catholic friends from our parish have joined, and it's family oriented. We've enjoyed many functions and classes there throughout the years and will be members for a long long time!

now now i know what you're going to say. "what's a mexican from mexico hanging out with the jewish brothers?" and before you do i'll have you know i've always brethened with the jewish folk. i've always been a man of cosmopolitan character despite my small town beginnings.
after all i've lived in bixby knolls (jewish mini capital of l.a.) for the last 17 years. i've eaten at canters (unfortunately) many times, used to watch seinfeld religiously and can sort of stand steven spielberg.
anyway, this place is pretty sweet. especially the basketball courts which i came here for with anton e. there are many amenities in this place and as well as classes: pilates, krav mada, and yoga. there are the usual weight and cardio machines, a heated outdoor swimming pool, and even a library!
but the basketball courts is where it's at. they're clean, well ventilated, they're in good shape and there are plenty of them. the courts remind me of my cerritos college years when i used to play basketball at the gymnasium.
it's very family oriented and the place is impeccably clean. i don't remember what the membership fees are but they're pretty affordable for what they have on offer. -

I love this JCC. It's close to my house in Bixby Knolls and has a lot of awesome, affordable amenities that I can't live without. I'm genuinely grateful for it's presence in my neighborhood.

I LOVE this place for the summer months, and then cancel my membership in the cooler months. The pool is great as my son always runs into kids he knows. I had my sons birthday party here last year and the set up crew was great.
There are some issues, many years ago I called and called about the pre school and never had a return phone call. This summer I have faxed in an application for a specialty summer camp and haven't heard a word back to confirm, no receipt, nothing even after leaving a message AND speaking with a summer camp employee. Now I will need to go in and speak to someone face to face. Would have given 4 stars but I can't considering... -

Updating my review. It's been 4 years since I was a member here. The gym area is still small but the equipment is the best I've experienced. The free weights have been cut back though. I swim so a trial membership has allowed me to enjoy the great outdoor pool again. I wish I could afford this gym though. Summers are bad here though with all the kids in the pool still

This is the first summer our family has been to the JCC. I joined because I enrolled my children in the summer camp. We absolutely LOVE THIS PLACE!! I have never taken my children to a better camp. There are really no comparisons or anything that comes close. The facility is amazing but it is the people that won us all over. From the ladies at the front desk to the directors of the camp to the counselors, these are the utmost best group of people I have ever had the fortune to deal with! The people are courteous, kind, intelligent and very adept in dealing with children (even kids who are not behaving). It is so refreshing to take my children to a camp where everyone greets you with a warm and welcoming smile and treat kids with respect. We will never go to another camp!! The great thing is that there are a variety of programs to please both boys and girls of different ages. And they swim daily. I loved the Judaic studies and Hebrew prayers (and no we are not Jewish). It was a great learning experience for my kids to learn about another religion and culture and they realized how much they all had in common. They have great exercise classes that are included in the membership, which is very reasonably priced, and in various programs throughout the center. I cannot say enough about how happy we have been here. The gym is huge and there are several little areas where you can just sit and read. I would highly recommend checking out all the amazing things they offer here because no review can cover all the activities and amenities here.

As a widowed Jewish senior I was nervous about attending programs at the JCC alone. I found the educational programs along with the water exercise classes engaging and fun. I have met a lot of very nice people there. In addition, the employees are among the nicest I've met at any Jewish Community Center.
