This mountain is a gem - located just an hour from downtown Seattle or 40min from issaquah, WA, it's surprisingly diverse in its terrain. Like all mountains, there's beginner and intermediate terrain but Alpental is reknowned for its expert terrain. They rank right up there with some of the more famous ones in the lower 48 and the backcountry (which is lift accessible) is incredibly vast and challenging so if you have backcountry safety gear, bring it. This year, they're open the last sat. and sun. of April and even Cinco de Mayo weekend - and with over 200" of snow pack, they've got more snow than any other open resort (except Mt. Baker, also in WA). They've pretty much remained #2 in snow pack all this spring (even beating out AK). there are no lift lines whatsoever during the spring (except maybe on 5/5) because folks transition to other outdoors sports here. Makes spring the best time to visit.  See what this place is like in this video taken last weekend - amazing!

Shwoop, shwoop, shwoop!! SO. MUCH. FUN.

First of all, it doesn't really ever get too crowded. Worst case scenario you're in line for 7 minutes, most of which you need to regain your breath from a heavy, Washington-snow run anyway! If you're an expert (or even just a daredevil who can find a way down), go up to Chair 2. Down at the bottom Armstrong Express is okay if you're intermediate or just want a good warm-up before heading on up top. But Sessel and St. Bernard are definitely more beginner level runs.

The place is beautiful of course. There are phenomenal streams beneath the chair up to Armstrong, trees that seem to have been stolen from the set of "The Grinch" reside under Chair 2, and a bunch of colorfully bundled kiddos crash around all over St. Bernard.

The lodge is great. There are heaters around to dry gear off during lunch, and usually finding a table is effortless. The vegetarian chili is awesome and the burgers always seem to be a hit. But seriously, don't spend too much time in there, GET BACK OUT THERE!

Really underrated mountain. If you can ski here, you can ski anywhere as far as I'm concerned.

The most beautiful scenery from a resort in Washington. (if you go up chair 2)

What Brian said, don't ever come here its horrible. Stay on the groomed nice slopes of Summit E, W, or central and go do some jibs in the park. It is way better over there.

In the wise words of Brian L: "Whatever you do, don't come to Alpental"

Alpental is terrible.  You should never come here.  Ever.  Stay as far away as possible.  I hear Summit West is awesome.  You should go there instead.

Whatever you do, don't come to Alpental.

Hate all you want - but I would argue that Alpental is some of the most challenging skiing terrain in the state.

With a vertical drop of something like 2,500 feet and over 400 inches of fresh powder a year...I can't believe that this mountain isn't packed! How is it that I can come up here on a saturday near Christmas, find a spot in the parking lot, and not wait in line for a high speed quad?!?

I nearly yelped my pants when I learned that there was already 800 plus acres of open backcountry accessible from chair 2 ...and that you could obtain a FREE bc-card to enjoy all this powdery untouched goodness!

Here's what gets me - there is a chair that offers ONLY black and "double black" runs.  (I will say that I think we all should step back and analyze exactly what constitutes these "double blacks." no need to hand out diamonds like candy.)

Yes - it's small.  But this being said, it's less than an hour from Seattle proper, and it only costs $48 for a pass from 9am-5pm! Do it. do it.

Alpental is the best of Snocrappie that's for sure, but with limited terrain acreage, and slower lifts it seems like to much money for a lift ticket. I much prefer to travel a little farther to Stevens Pass, Crystal Mt. or Mt. Baker. If you are "sick" from work then this is a good option as mid-week seems to be the best time to visit.

There's nowhere else in washington I'd rather be on a sick pow day.  Eidelweiss to me is like sitting at my kitchen table. The backcountry is lethal if you don't know your way around, or if you're stupid enough to go out there alone without a beacon, pack, and shovel.  The ski school there is excellent, but not recommended for beginners.  They have over 70% expert terrain.
At the Denny Mountain Lodge, they have the best bloody marys on the fuckin planet.  Pickled green beans, asparagus, cocktail onions, green olives and lime adorn this monument of vodka based drinks.  They also exclusively serve '68; It's a wonderful porter named after Alpental's birthday.  If you're done for the day, I'd suggest trying a drink called the Helenator. Love her or hate her (I love you Helen), Helen is a kick ass bartender with many regulars, and won't take any shit from anyone.  So mind your p's and q's mister.
One more thing-- park off site and take the shuttle if you're planning on riding weekends there.
