It is a hidden treasure!
Our family stayed at the Inn for Christmas (6 adults, 3 rooms). The accommodations are WONDERFUL, the owner is very gracious and helpful, and it is in very close proximity to the casinos. There is also a Taco Stand that has really good food for cheap prices within a block. We had just found out we are having a baby and the owner was so very nice and attentive toward us. They are pet friendly - another big plus! Next time we are in Tahoe will we defiantly stay at Alpenrose Inn. -

I love this place!
The "Alpenrose" has some special memories for me in that I spent the first three days of my married life here - and those were some very wonderful and special days that will never be forgotten.
The "Aplenrose" is unique among German owned and operated lodges in Northern California in that it does not have its own German restaurant on the premises like the "Austria Hof" , "Tyrolean Inn" or the "Highland Dell". That being said, the "Alpenrose" does offer 19 lovely rooms in a convenient motel setting that are clean, reasonably priced and quiet.
Owner Hannelore Conrad (aka "Hannah") is a native of Frankfurt, Germany and has owned and managed the "Alpenrose" since 1995. She is very nice and easy to work with. If you have questions about the area or want to know about hiking and skiing options in the area she is happy to help you.
All rooms are non smoking here and each room has a different "theme" and have been personally decorated by Hannah herself. Some of the theme's include "Black Forest", "Dutch Country", "Alpenrose" and several others. We stayed in the "English Tea Room" and loved it. The room was very clean and also included a kitchenette area.
Beds were comfortable and because the inn is located three blocks from the main highway it was also very quiet. You can walk from the inn to the casinos in about 10 minutes.
The price of your room includes a "continental breakfast" i.e. coffee, juice, fruit and pastries (found in the office area). This is a good option if you just want a quick bite to get started in the morning. We picked up our coffee and rolls and sat out on the big sun deck that is in front of the motel.
If you have dogs the inn can accommodate you - only $10.00 extra per night per dog.
There is also a private beach you can get access to, ask Hannah about this when you make your reservation or at check in.
Depending on the day of the week, season and the individual room you select the rates will vary from $50.00 to $200.00 per night.
If you are in the mood for some German or Swiss food the "Swiss Chalet Restaurant" is only 3.7 miles down the road. We always like to have dinner here when we are in South Lake Tahoe, just seems to go with the Alpine flavor of this part of Northern California. -

The Alpenrose Inn has a lot going for it. I've never stayed in a cleaner motel room, ever. The carpets, the shower, everything was spic and span! It's a small motel, which is great for the quiet at night. I was never disturbed by parking lot noise, and street noise, for that matter, was almost nonexistent. The motel is located three blocks from Hwy 50 in downtown South Lake Tahoe, and it's an easy walk to both the beach and the shops and casinos. The price for a central location like that was more than reasonable, and the peace and quiet was lovely.
The room itself was pretty standard in size and facilities for a motel room, however all the linens and towels were much nicer than those in any motel room I've been in; nicer even than many hotels I've been in! Plenty of hot water in the shower, and very nice toiletries in case you need them. I would have appreciated a larger TV screen, and a more comfortable seating arrangement in the room; the chairs were indoor/outdoor and very hard. After a day of hiking I could have used a comfy chair! Don't let that stop you from booking a room at the Alpenrose Inn though. You won't be unhappy with your choice. -

My friends and I travelled up to to Tahoe for a two-night concert at Harvey's Casino, and we had two very enjoyable nights at the Alpen Rose. The rooms were clean and comfortable. Hannah and the staff were very helpful and accommodating, and the entire place had a nice vibe to it.
While it was an easy walk to the casinos and the main Tahoe Blvd., it was very quiet at night and easy to sleep. We had access to a private beach nearby (shared with other motels), and they gave us beach towels and passes to take over to the beach.
(recommendation: This is technically a dry beach, so if you want to bring beer, don't use a cooler because you'll be turned away at the entrance. Bring a backpack and some cups, be discreet and you'll be fine).
Anyone who wrote a bad review about this place has a screw loose and is probably just a chronically unhappy person. The Alpen is exactly what you should expect for a nice motel in Tahoe for the reasonable price. -

The Alpenrose Inn was an amazing stay and I would gladly return next time I go by Tahoe.
Quaint and relatively unassuming from the outside, the room's interior was just amazing! Lovely pillowtop mattress with elegant bathroom fixtures, it seemed like we were out of place.
The innkeeper, Hanna was very helpful in picking out places to go around Tahoe. The only issue was that because we checked-in late, we didn't get the wifi password. I suppose it'd just be something to keep in mind.
Again, very strongly recommend. I doubt I'd have any reason to stay elsewhere in Tahoe. -

How anyone could give this miserable place 5 stars is beyond me! I only wish Yelp had a 'YOU STINK' rating! Seriously, check out the 4 photos I added and see for yourself!
I booked a specific room and three times I called ahead to make sure it was reserved for our special getaway and the owner(Hannah) assured me each time that it was. We were also using a "get one night free" coupon for one of our nights. So we get there and she tells us that the person who was staying in the room we booked decided to stay an extra night! So she puts us in the worst room possibly in all of south lake Tahoe, not kidding and tells us that it's the only room available, even though there was only 3 cars in the parking lot! Where do I start...
1. The room is at the bottom of the stairs, two feet away from the ice machine. Don't worry Hannah says, " the ice machine is broken(lol) and you can't really hear people on the stairs, it's a VERY lovely room"! Apparently Hannah is a pro at the ol' bait and switch game.
2. The kitchen area smelled like mold and outside the kitchen window is a fetid, stinking pond of stagnate water full of garbage. Couldn't open the kitchen window, there was no screen on the window and about a billion mosquitoes hovering over the stank pond! The fan in the room, didn't work either. Check out the 4 pictures I posted!
3. The beds were hard as a rock and I found a bedbug in my sheets! So I slept on top of the bedspread which smelled like B.O! The rug in this room had a very distinct unpleasant animal smell because apparently this is the room they reserve for people with pets!
4. This hotel room from hell boasts premium TV channels too but in reality our teeny tiny TV got like 13 channels, half in Spanish! It had a 19 inch screen and terrible reception. I've seen better TV 's in a prison cell! Check out the four pictures I posted!
5. The room is no smoking but about 6 feet from our door was a sitting area for smokers which meant we couldn't open our front window and we had to walk thru the cloud of second hand smoke to get to our room!
Did I mention the bizarre handyman and his chain-smoking wife that seemed to be lurking around every corner? Each time we looked out our front window or left our room they were standing out there staring which left us with a freaky vibe.
I complained to Hannah, so the next day she moves us to a "premium" room upstairs. This room is cleaner and more modern but NONE of the outlets worked. Our fridge, microwave and coffee maker didn't work at all! I noticed there was no fire alarm in this room as well. Bright and early the next morning (7am) we are startled awake by the handyman yelling in front of our door, hammers pounding and the sound of a round-saw in the room next to us ...at this point it was almost comical and obvious that Hannah didn't give a sh*t about the comfort of her customers.
Oh and that "stunning private Tahoe beach, moments from the hotel" is fenced in and gated, you have to pay $10 bucks EACH just to walk on the sand. Hannah told us that the Alpenrose was on the "'allow' list" but we had the lady at the entrance to the beach check twice and guess what.....they aren't! So I politely asked Hannah for a beach pass for the next day and she said she'd "misplaced them". Ahhh Snap! Each day for 4 days I asked for a beach pass and each time she had an excuse why she couldn't give me one. Ahhh snap again!
Oh and never Pre-pay to get a better room deal at this place, you'll regret it and whatever you do, DON'T use the "get one night free" coupon because this is her justification for sticking you in the dungeon room next to the swamp. Check out the four pictures I posted of the swamp!
I would never ...EVER stay here again! Hell, I wouldn't let my dog stay here! I had such a miserable time at the Alpenrose I just can't say enough bad things about it.
So ignore all the fake, lame 5 star reviews from Hannah's friends(Chris L.) and family and find a hotel that actually wants your business like the PARK TAHOE INN right around the corner. We stayed there 5 nights as well and it was a wonderful experience! -

Hannah did it again! This was our second visit to this wonderful place and we can hardly wait until the next one. We originally found it because of their pet friendly policy. This time we were sans pets. The accommodations may be on the modest side but everything else is impeccable! Hannah, certainly one of the most pleasant, informed and gracious hostesses, takes great pride in her establishment. They were in process of updating a number of rooms. I think every place I've stayed in the past always waits until the disrepair screams for attention. She doesn't wait for complaints, she insists that rooms be the center of her pride. We've been going to Lake Tahoe for decades yet Hannah is able to suggest places to visit and dining choices that have been spot-on. Try it, you'll like it.

Because we were traveling with our dog, I booked our stay at Alpenrose Inn. What a great choice! We stayed in Room A, a King with kitchenette which is one of the designated pet rooms located on the ground floor. When we checked in, the gal at the office told us that the owner was out shopping for a new bedspread for our room and that the one currently in there wasn't to her satisfaction. I was happy with the room and the existing bedspread was fine. It did appear that the carpet had just been cleaned at the end of the bed and was still a bit damp, no doubt from the previous occupant that marked the aforementioned bedspread, but the room was clean, well maintained, and didn't smell like a pet room. The shower is forceful, which was appreciated by my S.O. The kitchenette is convenient and included a microwave, fridge and spare dishes/cutlery. The office has a selection of videos to watch and the TV's feature VHS and DVD players. There is a private beach within 4 blocks walking distance and of course Harrah's and Harvey's are just over the state line.
I'll be back with or without my dog! Highly recommend. -

Hanna's hotel, the Alpenrose Inn is a jem. No seriously it's surprising how the small details go a long, loooong, loooooooong way to making your stay that much more enjoyable.
The first think you'll be struck with is how clean the rooms are. Seriously spotless and very comfortable. Hanna takes pride in running an establishment that is not only comfortable but inviting upon first blush. She puts out fruit, cereal, coffee and pastries for breakfast for all the residents. During the summer months she positions a bbq out front that you can use to grill. The hotel is conveniently located walking distance to the casinos and heavenly gondola and Hanna is an all around generous soul who greets you with a smile at any hour of the day or night.
I've been frequenting her establishment for over three years now, and my fiance since she was a teenager. There's a reason that we've returned year after year it's just a bloody great place for the right price and in the perfect location regardless of season. -

Alpen Rose Inn is one of the nicest, cleanest places I have found in Lake Tahoe.I have been staying here at Hannah's place for over 10 years, and it is always a comfortable room, quiet and clean. And the rates are probably the best in town. And Hannah always makes you feel like you are family here...snacks and treats, a warm smile and never a complaint about the Inn.2 blocks from the lake, and a few more the other direction and you are at the casinos, downtown, the gondola to Heavenly and yet it so quiet here you will feel like your out in the sierras. Now if mother nature would produce some snow so we can all go skiing again !!!

Alpen Rose is definitely a gem. Unlike most of the "mom-n-pops" hotels in the area this one has a bit of charm to it. The German/French architecture and decor set it above the rest.
Hannah kept her word on the 10% discount and even hooked up an upgrade to a king bed. The rooms were adequately sized, comfortable, and very clean.

Came here because of all the good reviews.
Disappointed because everything else was perfect for our trip except staying here.
We have dogs. I was not allowed to book any of the king size bed rooms Fine. When I checked in, Hanna told me the room she's giving me is not specious but at least it's dog friendly. I think the room size is ok, but since she said that it made me feel I was put into a !@#$% room that we dog owners have to stay in.
I was right. I don't know how other rooms are like but the one I stayed in was like a 2 stars old hotel room.
Carpet looks dirty, room feels old, fake flowers are dusty, shower area is tiny, oh and you know what? there's a huge dead bug by the window!
We could hear people walking upstairs above us while it's sleeping time. People came to get ice which is right by our room. Or their people doing things in the kitchen which is also near our room.
In the morning I could hear someone's dog barking non-stop and scratching the door.
Hanna is a nice lady though, that's the reason why I don't want to give it a 1 or 2 stars rating. This place is in a nice location. -

I have not been to Tahoe in like FOREVER! I went up during V day weekend with my friend. We called on our way up and booked one of the last rooms. We arrived earlier then expected and were able to get an early check in. The room was super cute. Totally not what we expected. I would say the Alpenrose Inn is one of the best finds I have come across on Yelp. So glad I found it and whenever I am back in Tahoe this will be the place that I will be staying at. I was just charmed by it.

This is a welcome place to pull up to after the long drive up to South Lake Tahoe. The staff is super friendly and it is right down the block from the lake. The casinos and commercial area are close by too, walking distance if you are up for it, but otherwise just a short drive.
They provide a free breakfast in the morning in the front office...nothing fancy, just pastries, coffee, tea, and cereal, but it was a great way to get the day started before heading out. The owner, Hannalore, is super knowledgeable about the area, and was happy to point some of the lesser known sites out on the map.
The prices are great too. For a romantic getaway or a family vacation, this seems like the spot to be if you don't want to be on the main South Lake Tahoe strip.. -

Great little motel -- outstanding hostess Hannah, nicely decorated rooms, not updated but very cozy and clean and warm; great value motel. Within walking distance of the Heavenly Gondola station.

Hannah was a very accommodating host. She was very friendly and helpful. Rooms are clean and location is ideal. Just minutes away walking distance from the Casino, beach, or shopping center at the gondola to Heavenly. Also moderately priced, not too expensive. We'd come back!

We stayed here for a few nights during late fall. Very cozy, clean, quaint and quiet. Compared to the plethora of other hotels in the SLT area, this place feels like a four star establishment. I wish every hotel room had a fireplace, clean sheets and bathrooms, but alas in the city of dumpy 60's hotels winners like this one are few and far between.
Within walking distance of SLT Blvd and the casinos. It's a little far if you're trying to get to the Gondola in ski boots. If you're not planning to stay in one of the casinos, this is the place I'd recommend without hesitation. -

Could not beat this place for the price. It has a very homey feel to it, which makes sense as Hannah's (the owner) main advertising slogan is, "European Hospitality". She does a very good job at keeping the place very clean and in good shape. She was helping paint the outside when we checked in. Also, they are currently in the process of redoing quite a few of the rooms. The place is a little different then your typical hotel, which is nice if you have to stay in as many hotels as I do. The bed was comfortable, and my wife and I had a nice, peaceful, quite night's sleep. You are not going to find a 40" LCD TV in your room but we did have a television with cable. We were even able to walk to the Stateline Casinos from the inn (about a 10 minute walk). I plan to revisit this place in winter.

Extremely clean place! On the other hand, the room was somewhat dated. For example, in our room the outlets plugs were not wired for grounded plugs (3 prong). Luckily I carry adapters with me. Also, the TV was an old CRT and the remote was so worn that the markings weren't visable. Hannah was accommodating and loaned us a portable DVD play. Room was pricey but we were there between Christmas and New Years. Cleanliness made up for it, especially since the townhouse we rented on Craigslist for the same time period was so filthy that we opted for an alternative and that's how (via YELP) we came onto Alpenrose.

I've been staying at the Alenrose Inn for several years now, mostly for last-minute ski trips to Heavenly and Kirkwood. Hannah, the owner, is definitely the highlight. She has a very warm personality and really goes out of her way to be helpful and to make guests feel welcome.
The rooms are always very clean and well-maintained. Hannah, has also decorated each one with a different theme. -

My wife and I chose to stay here during our 2nd year Anniversary weekend getaway. First off I would like to say this is an excellent place to spend your vacation. My wife and I are very happy to stay here again. We stayed here before during the 4th of July weekend and we were very happy. Hannah the owner is very helpful and has a very good knowledge about tips where to dine and about nice places to visit. She is a very courteous and helpful. She would make your stay feel at home.
The location is prime even if you don't have vehicle. We took the Amtrak and it was a 10 min walk to the Alpenrose. The Heavanly Ski Resort, Raley's Super market,Edgewood Golf Course, Harvery's / Harrah's Casino and the private Lake Tahoe beach is like a 5 -10 min walk. We didn't miss not having a car at all. Having a car will give you more options of course but still you can have a great time without one as well.
The room was tastefully decorated and it is very clean. The bed is very comfortable and room even came with a little kitchenette. The kitchenette had plates, 2 wine glasses, silver ware, microwave, mini fridge, table and 2 chairs. The bathroom was very clean and shower was nice and warm. You will not be cold in the room as the temperature can be adjusted according to your need. The complimentary breakfast consisted of cereal, milk, coffee, tea, muffins and bananas.
Hannah is very friendly and will go to great length to make sure your at home. She helped us make our reservation to the South Tahoe Express Shuttle and recommended a place for dinner. Thank you Hannah!! -
