Very handy to the Village. Park your car, get your parking pass and ride the gondola across the street to Canyon Lodge. Canyon Lodge is not open as long as the rest of the mountain, so check that Canyon is open. You can walk to some good restaurants in the Village, Old New York Bagel, 5 Buroughs Pizza and Auld Dubliner. And it's next to Bergers. Some rooms have fireplaces. We stay here mainly for the conveinance.
I stayed at the alpenhof for one night on 3/3/07. It is not one of the better choices in Mammoth for accommodations. Really the only thing it has going for it is the location - just a 2 min walk from the Village. The rooms are pretty small, it's loud (you can hear your neighbors and hallway traffic no problem), the spa is teeny, and the water in the shower will suddenly change temps, causing you to squeal in pain/surprise as you soothe your muscles after a day of boarding!
However, for the most part, it is clean and serves its purpose as a place to crash out for the night. The front desk staff are also friendly folks. But it is not worth the $197 my friends and I paid for a room with 2 double beds this past weekend. You're better off booking a condo (with your own kitchen, i might add) at View Point, just as close, and a better value.
