I returned to the bay area five years ago, and I had a hard time finding a good hairstylist. My friend told me about his hairstylist, Vivian. I started going in September 2009. She's awesome! She honestly tells me what will work with my hair.
She is very meticulous, when cutting. She cuts with artistry. She is a true artiste in her craft. Need I say more?
The other thing I love about her is that she will work you into her schedule so you can get your haircut. I've experienced other stylists in which I had to schedule my appointment 8 weeks ahead.
Anyway, I just love, love, love her. I would recommend her to anyone. -

I don't know about you, but it's a total bitch for me to find a good stylist, who's accommodating, flexible and willing to work with my OCD behaviors concerning my hair. That is why I love Vivian, who's new to Alooks.
IMHO, she is the best! She is willing to come in on her days off, she calms me down when I spazz out with the sight of more ghastly gray hairs, and will cater to my every whim...well, almost any style i want. She gives great scalp massages and tells great stories. What more can a guy ask for in a stylist?
My ravings and rantings aside, Viv is on top of her game. She teaches alot of seminars. She knows hair and coloring.Listed in: Attentive establishments

Walked-in to ALooks Salon looking for an up-do do for a wedding I was attending that night. Every other salon I had called upon was $80. or more for an up-do and was really put out that I was trying to fit it into my lunch break from 12-1 p.m. on a Friday (8/8/08). Not ALooks - I walked in, they said great, glad your here and yes we can do it in 45 minutes for $45.
I was back to work on time with a very sexy partial up in the front, down in the back hair do. It turned out better than the picture I had brought in as an example. Joy made it look more unique and modern than the photo.
At the wedding the bride was floored with my hair (she's also my hairdresser and sis-in-law) - she kept saying how she liked my up-do better than hers! I think there was a tinge of jealousy - but she'll get over it! -

I'm a busy girl and I will avoid hair cuts and nail appointments...but I really enjoy coming here. I usually just get my hair cut by fabulous Miss Kitty and because she does such a great job with my cut I took a chance and got color! Simple understated highlights...but it looks fierce!,I felt really comfortable with this huge change since I had never colored my hair. Kitty got me a glass of wine ( wine bar next door!) and walked me through the process. I love the fact that she likes to work with her client to figure out the perfect style...nothing too trendy and just the right amount of "me". I love the proximity to public parking, coffee and wine...you can sip a cab or pinot while waiting for your highlights...now, that's heaven!

I only went here for an eyebrow wax, but I will probably be back for a haircut as well. She did a great job on my brows and I found her very friendly and personable in a genuine way (without the forced chattiness I often notice at other places). I also found the price very reasonable. I've definitely paid more for similar or worse service at Plum Spa down the road.
FYI: In the past, they've had half price haircuts on Tuesdays. Sounds like a great deal!
UPDATE: I went back for another eyebrow wax about two weeks before my wedding. Definitely a mistake! She somehow managed to burn my eyelids on both eyes, and didn't even seem to notice or apologize for it! It was peeling for a week or more. Thankfully, it healed in time for the event, but I will think again before going back for another wax. -

The 5 stars is for my hair stylist Viv. She is the ONLY ONE I would ever let near my hair for color, cut, straightening, ANYTHING. She is the best!
I met Viv when she was still working at the Hair Color Salon about 5 years ago. I walked in with a hair colorists nightmare... An asian girl who had bleached her ENTIRE HEAD, dyed it with BLACK dye, bleached it for streaks, and then put more black dye on top of that... She was straight up honest with me and said "your hair WILL fall out if we try to lighten it quickly".. she was right, because after my 5th visit for lightening, I begged her to just get it over with... and she tried to lighten just a bit of hair, rinsed it out, and my hair went right down the drain with the water. After that, I never questioned Vivians knowledge about hair. I absolutely adoooore her! She is beyond accommodating, and its very easy to get attached to her! Now I consider her a friend and not just a stylist.
As for the salon itself, from what I've seen of the place, it's very clean. All the stylists sweep their areas when they're done with a cut. As far as the other stylists - the girls to the left and right of Vivians station seem to be really sweet. The other stylists, I don't know, I've never interacted with any of them.
Oh and I can't forget Hanh! She does the nails there. She is also from Hair Color Salon. That woman is funnyyyyy and such a doll!

I went here and asked for a "trim" but came away looking like I was ready to join the marines! I mean, it was a great crew cut and all, but that's not really what I wanted. I asked the stylist to keep the sides long enough so I could style them and take a little off the top. But she whipped out the clippers (ahh), and when I told I'd prefer if she'd use scissors, she told me to trust her, "it will look good." Then when she got to the top, she just started cutting without asking if it was a good length or anything. At that point, it was too late to say anything. I mean, what was she supposed to do - put the hair back on?
I think she was in a rush because I was her last appointment of the day, but I won't be going back another time to find out. -

I love this place. I've always been very picky about my hair and am always looking for a good price. I've finally found the right place! I had Joy, who was really sweet and very sociable. She did an awesome job! I really didn't know what I was looking for, but she sure found it.
The staff are very friendly and very helpful. The cost was reasonable, I paid $50 and it was worth every penny. I've paid way more at other salons and had terrible hair cuts...
love this place, definitely coming here from now on.Listed in: Born to Shop

I followed Vivian here, after she left Hair Color Salon. She is, as usual, the best! She always does exactly what I ask for. She takes her time, and she never double books herself. I always get compliments on my hair after I see Vivian.
She is also a specialist at hair color. She looks at the condition of your hair, and she adjusts the hair formula to your hair. -

i have always been very picky about who cuts my hair. but my normal person moved away so i have been trying to find someone to take over. i have a friend who gets her hair done here and decided to give it a shot. after all...its just hair...it will grow back if i dont like it
i mostly wanted a change in color. so i looked on line, got pictures to show my stylist what i wanted. i was looking for some funkie, chunkie, peek*a*boo type blond chunks.
i was very happy with the outcome. so i got her card and number. i will defffffinatly be going back to Tammie.
but once i got home, and let my excitment on my snazzy new doo die down a bit, i couldnt help but feel it was missing simething. i was a little hesitant to give her a call, after all i was super uber giddy about my hair when i left. but i gave her a call the next day....i asked her what she thought about maybe adding in a slice here and maybe here...she told me not a problem.
I was able to go in with in a couple days. And once she was done...i was totally sure that that was it.
my hair is happy, i am happy, and Tammie is happy that i am happy with her work :0)

Hmm , how do I explain this. I've had worst expereince at a salon but not with such attitude. My hairdresser was of subpar cutting abiity and had a major attitude. When I asked if he could straighten my hair after he was finished blow drying it he said "Honey, this isn't Supercuts, I'm not finished yet". He also left me under the hair dryer and disaperred for about 30 minutes. The cut and style was subpar, but I'm glad he didn't try to sell me any of the crap hair products they used. All I can say is steer clearunless you like rude and obnoxous hairdressers and subpar haircuts.

These 5 stars go out to Stacey Gonzales, who recently joined the Alooks Salon staff. She was absolutely amazing, took tons of time with my hair, and I actually ended up screaming with delight after it was all done! I've never had such a positive hair experience before. She took a lot of time cutting my hair as well as putting in the peek-a-boo chunky streaks that I wanted. My hair was once super flat because it's really straight and thin, but the way she cut my hair has given it a lot more body. I've received tons of comments about my hair since my visit with Stacey, and I definitely will continue seeing her in the future!

I am thoroughly pleased with the skill and honesty of Vivian, my new stylist. I've found a place that uses really good color that doesn't leave my hair feeling/looking like horse fodder. Vivian was able to look at a few pictures of a pretty out-there style and duplicate it right on. Very impressive. i will surely be back!

I can only speak for JoyAnn and not about their other services. She is great and I've been getting my haircut from her for over 2 years. I have not had anything resembling a bad haircut and I realize as a guy its harder to have a bad haircut but I'm always happy. She's conversational has a clean station and makes recommendations but never pushes any particular style. She's cool!!!
