Good food! Cheap prices! What more can you ask for?
Ordered the rainbow roll, spicy tuna roll, California spring roll, the calamari appetizer, and cheesecake for dessert.
The sushi was good quality, and the fish was very fresh. You can see that these people actually know how to make sushi, and they're not just some random dudes mixing rice and fish. There is a good hunk of fish in/on each piece of sushi in the rolls, so don't worry about them skimping out on the fish and bombarding you with rice rice and rice. The calamari appetizer and the cheesecake were just okay, so don't bother ordering these unless you're really craving them. But definitely, do go for the rolls!
During happy hour, they have $1 sushi (nigiri I believe). Didn't try any of the nigiri sushi, but judging from the quality of the rolls, I'm sure it's good!
Keep in mind that this is no 5 star Japanese restaurant. You will get good sushi, but it won't be top-of-the-line stuff. Sushi snobs love to degrade places that don't serve the highest quality everything, but seriously, not many of us can drop $25 on one specialty roll. For the prices, this place has outstanding food. And anyways, none of the sushi places around this area sell genuine sushi like it was meant to be served in Japan. So, suck it sushi snobs!
One note: There was a slight smell of chlorine or some other cleaning chemical in the air, but it's seriously not as bad as some of these other Yelpers are making it out to be. -

YES YES YES. This is the sushi place I've been waiting for. There are some other good places in Baltimore, for sure. But this one really is taking the cake, for me, my friends.
Came here last weekend for a little date night. Walked right in and got a seat by the window. Lovely place to people watch the Mount Vernon crowd. Ordered some wine and a tizer and some delicious sushi. We always go overboard and order way too much, Oops, we did it again. But it was SO SO fresh and good. The service was attentive without being invasive and the check was totally reasonable. YAY for finding a new go-to sushi spot! -

Baltimore, MD
I happened upon this hidden treasure during a horrendous snow storm/ blizzard we had in 2010. It was the weekend I moved into my current location. The snow was so bad that I moved into my spot the DAY before it began snowing (this is after I moved my moving day up after all the warnings that it was gonna be bad one) and I was not able to move my car for 10 days (trees fell, 6 ft. snow drifts, I couldn't even open my back door - I couldn't see out the door due to the snow). Businesses were closed and basically, MD, DC and VA shut down due to this storm. That said, after I began unpacking, I was slowly getting cabin fever (CALGON, TAKE ME AWAAAAY!!!). I HAD TO get out of the house. I threw on my boots, scarf, hat & parka and headed outside. All public transportation was 'limited' due to the weather so I walked downtown.
After getting my sanity back and taking in the nice crisp winter air I decided I would walk back to my place (a very long walk - especially in 4-6 ft. of snow) - but hey, what else do I have to do ... so I began my walk ... which I realized was a COMPLETE ascension. The entire walk was on a steady incline (OMG! ARE YOU SEIOUS w/ this mess?!?!? DAYUM!!!)
As I get closer to my 'hood, I notice that the spot that I used to frequent (Henry & Jeff's, which closed down eons ago), sprouted a new moniker. It was now a place called 'Aloha Sushi'. The name, I wasn't a fan of - It just sounded WAY TOO cheesy. I mean - how is a Hawaiian Japanese fusion sounding restaurant w/ neon lighting even going to be CLOSE to palatable? I was however, hot, tired and sweaty from this walk. AND ... it was the ONLY place open during this crappy weather. I figured I could go in and cool down and get some water or tea ... then begin my trek again.
I step inside and my trepidation is quickly quelled. There are two areas. 1) a main dining room upstairs and 2) a bar / karaoke room, downstairs. I head upstairs and was quickly greeted and shown a seat. I look over a sizable menu w/ many options and after skimming and asking appropriate questions, I settle on some seaweed salad, couple normal sushi rolls and something that sounded interesting to me - 'Seafood Sushi Lasagna'.... Say whaaaaaaaat?!?!? Oh yeah, I'mma try me some-o-this! While waiting, I' am brought some tea, a small house salad w/ this AMAZING ginger dressing - OMG! I wish I could bottle that stuff!), and a cup of scrumptious MISO soup. PAY DIRT!! I am one happy camper right now... Oh - did I mention - that was all FREE!!! Yep - u read right! Soup, salad and green tea - all FREE!!! DOPENESS!!!
Out comes my meal and my experience only got better from there. The sushi rolls were awesome and this 'seafood sushi lasagna' (I chose the salmon version) was ... in a word ... AMAZING!!!!!!!!! I think a tear actually ran down my cheek ... (I tend to do that when food is above par). Essentially, it's a standard sushi roll (either salmon, tuna, shrimp or scallop) and that is bottom layer. Then they put this orange creamy sauce on top, drizzled w/ a little bit of roe. Then a layer of your selected fish, cubed and spread on top. A little more sauce then it's thrown in the broiler for a minute and served to you. (you can get the sriracha sauce on top as well. I'm personally not a fan of all that fire messing up my taste experience but hey, you might be so GO FOR IT!!!). This oowey gooey savory treat is the REASON I was MEANT to stop in this spot. To this day, when I go there. I ALWAYS get the 'lasagna' and whatever else. So, if you enjoy messy, sloppy food (aye, I'm a NY'er - I love messy food) and enjoy sushi - this is a MUST DO!! Needles to say, my walk back through the rest of the snow was a cake-walk now that my gullet was full and my behind was feelin nice off the sake ...
UPDATE: I stopped by 'Aloha Sushi' last week and had my regular ... BUT they no longer have the free green tea, salad and miso. They were losing money and with this CRAZY economy, had to charge for it ... but at $1 a pop, it's still a great deal! Trust me - that miso & that salad dressing is NO JOKE!!
I don't know why, but they also go by the name 'Aloha Tokyo'. Confusing but true. Just a lil FYI for you ... -
Review from Dan A.
Although Aloha Sushi looks a little run down from the outside, it's surprisingly quite nice and inviting on the inside. My friend and I were seated at one of the small tables next to the window. If you just need a table for two, do try and get one of those tables; it was really nice.
We came in for happy hour which was great because it turns out they have $1 sushi pieces. This wasn't like last week's rotting fish either. Each sushi piece was fairly large with good slices of fresh fish; it was vibrantly colored, not dull like old, bad quality fish. I had the salmon, yellow tail tuna, and red snapper. All great. While the $1 pieces add up as you get more pieces, it still is a very good value considering that quality was on par with some of the more expensive places I've been to.
My friend ordered a spicy crunch roll (if i remember correctly) and also ordered udon. The roll was not too bad. It came out beautifully presented as well. My friend loved the udon as well. She especially liked the fact that they gave you little seasoning flake things to add to the soup if you'd like. She said she haven't seen it much in this area, although it is a fairly common thing in the L.A. area where she is originally from.
Service was great as well.
Aloha is a very good sushi place, especially considering the Station North area doesn't have too many choices. I'd recommend... and plan on coming back too :)Listed in: I see sushi!

Went there on New Years Day and wasn't expecting much, just glad to find a place open for the evening.
I didn't feel like eating sushi and was happy to see they had Bibimbap on their menu, and boy was it the best Bibimbap I've ever had! The bowl was so huge and filled with all Korean Vegetable goodness topped with a sunny side up egg. The rice and sauce came in two seperate bowls.
The lady set them all on the table and asked "You know how to eat Bibimbap?" I did, but she had the most inviting smile, so I let her explain anyway. "You put rice and sauce in and mix everything together" And that's exactly what I did! It took every ounce of decency in me to not bury my face in this big bowl of delight.
My friend got a couple of sushi rolls (Yellowtail and a Shrimp special they had) Both were really tasty.
The place has such a homey feel to it, very friendly service and prices can't be beat! -

I so totally thought I wrote a review...
I've been to Aloha on several different occasions and I'm never been disappointed.
I've experienced this spot during a happy hour, on a date and during a friday night party (complete with DJ).
The Bento box lunches are plentiful and worth your lunch time bucks. The happy hour menu has a little something for varying levels of sushi aficionados.
What surprised me, were their spicy honey bbq wings. Delicious! I'll be back... -

Yeah, so very quickly I'd like to address some of the other reviews here first; price should NEVER be the governing factor in sushi selection. You're eating raw fish...freshness is really the main goal...all else is secondary.
That said, I'll never be back to Aloha sushi. I'd like to tell you about the food....but I can't...we didn't even make it that far. All it took was the chokingly-strong chemical cleaner scent at the door to send us right back out. Not to mention it was 945 on a Friday and the place was deserted. No thanks. I'd prefer to eat my sushi without a pine-sol chaser. But thanks anyway.
Additionally, with Minato just two blocks away...there's really no reason to settle for this place. -
Review from Ben B.
I'll just make this review an anecdote. Me and my friend got 8 pieces of nigiri and four tasty rolls (shrimp+avocado, avocado, fried tuna, yellowtail). We ate so much fish our stomachs started swimming.
The bill was $20.

This was a good night alot of food and laughter all around. We went down to Aloha Sushi for lunch before hitting Artscape. This place is great and has great location in the Mt. Vernon area. I bought multiple trays of sushi and ending up filling up on great sushi and good drinks. I had the spicy tuna roll and spicy crab roll and a few others. They were all good and after my first three rolls I ordered a fourth and fifth roll. The food here is great and a great hang out spot for anytime.
Pros:
Great Food
Great Location
Two Levels
Cons:
Pricy ( I spent 60 bucks on sushi alone)
I would definitely go here again. I like the location and how things are laid out and the sushi is killer. But next time I am getting the Korean BBQ. -

It doesn't look that great from the outside, but once you go in and upstairs, it's nice and quiet. But soon again starts another big riot flavorful fresh raw fish. The sushi here is just big. (note: I've discovered they don't always give those huge cuts of sushi, but still are pretty much always above average in size).
The fish here is always fresh, colorful, and delicately flavored. The Tuna Avocado and Salmon Avocado are always a treat. Two of my favorite specialties are the White Monster and Alaskan Roll. I also enjoyed their Mackerel, Yellowtail, and White Tuna. The Red Snapper tasted a bit too much like the ocean for me.
Sometimes at night the bar down the stairs can be loud (on the ocassion when the door opens), but it's still a nice little atmosphere with friendly service. -

Of the various sushi places in the Station North/Mt. Vernon area that are in walking distance, this has become my favorite. I like the unpretentious, homespun atmosphere: nothing fancy, a pleasant mom and pop feel pervades, and the service is always friendly and efficient. The tuna has always been fresh, and free of sinew, and I like their miso. Though this may not be award winning, the prices, portions and freshness make this an excellent value.
Some have groused about the take-out liquor store that they have opened below the restaurant, but I find this a plus, as they stock Asahi in large cans, and have an excellent sake selection, and stay open late on weekends. If there's a few panhandlers about, this is Baltimore, and I've hardly noticed or been bothered; that's life in the big city. Is this a fancy wine and spirits shop? No. But it provides a useful service: one of the better take-out selections available at that hour, and in a clean, friendly setting.
I am impressed by their entrepreneurial verve, and the good sense they had in expanding their use of their liquor license; it provides a useful service to the late-night set of variously artsy bohemians and tipplers that people the area. -

This place is easily the best sushi in Baltimore, and it is so cheap! The service is great, we got free miso soup and salad with our sushi order (what a nice surprise!) and the fish is so fresh and delicious every time, I don't even want to try going to any other sushi places in Baltimore anymore!
First of all, I find that when restaurants get a little too creative/trendy with their rolls, sometimes the actual quality lacks. With Aloha sushi, everything is more or less traditional, no crazy trendy rolls here that go by names like Godzirra, instead they focus more on the quality of each roll here than the trend appeal. (They still do have about 20 different kinds of fancy rolls here though).
The best part about this place, is the AMOUNT of fish in each roll, Oh my god it is such a delight to have such huge chunks of fresh fish in my sushi!
Their other dishes are crazy good too, my husband got the udon noodle seafood dish and there was a ton of different delights of the sea in it (muscles, fish, octopus, shrimp, crab) and it was presented beautifully and everything tasted like a dream. -

(12/21/2011) UPDATE: finally gave the lunch specials a try. Got a nice little bento box; got the kalbi (marinated, grilled, Korean short ribs -- savory-sweet, chewy) cooked entree. The boxes come with 4 pieces of California roll, small salad, shrimp (1) and vegetable tempura (2 green beans, 1 broccoli floret, 1 onion ring), 1 gyoza, oshinko, ice cream scoop of rice and miso soup. Service is still absentminded/oblivious, and the overwhelming smell of Pine-Sol still lingers in the dining room. Cheap, different, relatively quick lunch specials in Mt. Vernon, though.

Good Sushi, decent prices, good service.
My friend and I gave this place a visit and walked away quite satisfied. We started off with the Kyoza (Japanese pot-stickers, which you can get steamed or fried. We went with the fried) which were pretty tasty, but only came with 4 for $5.50. Or sushi orders came with a bowl of miso soup (never have been a fan, personally) and a bowl of salad with a ginger dressing (not as sweet as others I've had, but still very good).
On to the sushi, we ordered a Spicy Crab roll, a Spicy Tuna roll, a California Roll, and a Shrimp Tempura roll (all 6 piece). I can safely say I was very satisfied with each roll, all of them tasted great and looked great (this was my first time having Shrimp Tempura, and I was very impressed.) Overall I was very happy with the meal.
Prices aren't cheap, but they aren't expensive, pretty standard fare here, $5.50 for a 6 piece roll, so no complaints here. The wait staff was great, and checked up on our table multiple times (without being super annoying about it). I won't say this is the best sushi I've had, but it was definitely very good. Definitely worth checking out if you're in the area. -
Review from Lauren G.
We came here a while ago on a Friday evening. The place wasn't crowded, but that has never been an issue with me. Sure, some people say if it's not crowded, the food sucks. That's not always the case, but here it is.
I ordered the chicken teriyaki and some non descript rolls. The chicken tasted rubbery and I couldn't really swallow any of it. My boyfriend enjoyed his sushi enough, but it wasn't enough to make us want to come back. -

3.5 stars.
Sushi is top notch. Specials are excellent deals. The service is okay at best and the atmosphere is pleasant but super casual in a way that is unusual for the area. Not a place for a first date.
Try the tamago or the unagi. -

Have been here twice for dinner and both times left fat and happy! The first time I tried this place was before a show at the Meyerhoff and the only thing I had to critique was the service. I think they were really understaffed that evening and for some reason it took FOREVER to get our cocktails from the bar. They have a pretty decent selection of sushi to choose from and other interesting entrees on the menu. I've really enjoyed their specialty rolls and the shitake mushroom roll is excellent! Last time I had dinner here I tried the sushi "lasagna" which was the strangest and tastiest take on sushi I've ever tried! It's literally exactly what it sounds like, several warm layers of rice, seaweed, fish and lots of different sauces all wrapped in a big foil pan. It's really heavy because of all the sauces but worth trying. They also have delicious peach martinis and many other cocktails to choose from. The service is really unpredictable, but always really friendly and helpful. The decor is typical for a Hawaii/tiki themed sushi restaurant. They have a bar downstairs and I'm guessing a dance floor because the music is always blaring. Prices are standard for sushi, not too pricey but not cheap. Worth checking out if your in the area!

While I cannot endorse the enthusiastic "best sushi in Baltimore" chorus, I do think Aloha deserves a try. The sushi is of consistent quality and is easily the most affordable in the area. You will find the service friendly, but no-frills. A free miso soup and tiny, just OK salad, help prime the canvas for a decent sushi experience.
Be aware that there is no decor to speak of. It's simple, diner-style tables, a distinct affection of kitsch, and lacking in the typical cutesy Japanese trinkets. You may also detect the odor of cleaning products. It's an unusual observation, but an honest one.
Give Aloha a try. Some will like it, some won't, and a few, it seems, love it. I fall somewhere in between. -
Review from Jeff W.
This review is for the lounge downstairs. The space is pretty comfortable, but I was a little surprised by how dead it was, especially considering it was Friday, and Ladies Night. (I thought ladies nights were reserved for Tuesdays and Wednesdays??) The bartender was a very friendly Korean guy, who I assume was working the bar with his wife. He was timid at first, but then once karaoke started, he "accidentally" set up one of the songs in Korean and started busting out some karaoke, much to the delight of the crowd. We had a good time but prices were a bit higher than expected and the beer selection isn't very good.
Maybe the sushi is good, but I didn't get to try anything since they had stopped serving food by 10. The upstairs restaurant area seemed nice enough, but does Charles St. really need yet another sushi bar? If it's as cheap as people say, then this might be a worthwhile destination the next time I'm in the area. For lounging and karaoke, you can do far worse, but I'd drink somewhere else beforehand, and definitely grab some food before coming. -

My second stop on a Baltimore Sushi Tour. Unlike the other sushi bars, I had never experienced Aloha previously. Aloha is both sushi bar and hibachi - one next to the other, separate doors.
First, a daily special of $1 pieces of sushi or nigiri makes Aloha affordable, but is it worth it?
YES! At this point, our group had expanded to 8 people. We decided to choose 5 varieties of nigiri with 8 pieces of each. Smoked salmon, red snapper, white tuna, squid and spicy scallop. Service was excellent and food was well presented. Kindly, the pieces were split between the table - four pieces of each nigiri per plate, each for one half of the table, making sharing easy for all. Also, miso and salad were complimentary.
Spicy scallop was awesome. Red snapper not as great as XS, but still tasty. Squid was chewy, though I've never met a squid that I liked (unless its breaded and fried as calamari). Smoked salmon and white tuna were tasty as well.
I was quite impressed by Aloha. The restaurant itself isn't the as fancy as the other sushi bars in Mt. Vernon, but for what it lacks in extravagant decor, it compensates with tasty sushi at very reasonable prices.Listed in: A Baltimore Sushi Tour

I didn't love Aloha Sushi. Went there once and will not be back.
Atmosphere was not great - the restaurant was cold and our table wasn't very clean.
The sushi was not wonderful. There wasn't much creative on the menu. The "crispy" sushi just had tempura flakes sprinkled over it (was kind of gross) and the rest of it was really mediocre.
The service was good and other people in there seemed happy. -
Review from Laurie W.
I enjoyed lunch here, actually. It wasn't the best but the food was fresh and the staff was very, very friendly.
The rolls were ok - not awesome. I'm on a salmon and white tuna with avocado kick, and they were both fine - also both under $5, which was nice. (I'm really starting to hate the upcharge on everything just for living in Montgomery County.) I also got a couple of pieces of white tuna nigiri because they were $1 apiece. Lunch came with a teeny-tiny ginger dressing salad and miso soup, so it was a lot of food for very little money. The green tea was nice, too.
I wouldn't drive special to get here but if I were in the Mt. Vernon area and had a sushi jones I'd go again. -

My boyfriend and I found out about Aloha Sushi through http://www.restaurant.com last summer and decided to try it out. The certificate was good for $25 off of a $40 tab, excluding alcohol and gratuity.
Aloha Sushi is in the Mount Vernon area and there isn't much to the building or the decor, but the service was great. Our waitress seated us by the window and we ordered a massive amount of sushi. It all came out on a huge plate and we couldn't even finish it all. Using the certificate, our bill came to $30 and we added a generous tip on top of that because the food and service was so good.
Unfortunately, Aloha Sushi is no longer participating in the coupons with http://restaurant.com, but it is still a great place to eat. There are a lot of sushi places to eat in Baltimore and I can't say that this is the best, but it's pretty good.Listed in: Baltimore Sushi

New York, NY
I think I enjoy the little 'perks' of dining there than eating the actual meal. The perks were the complimentary salad and miso soup whenever I order sushi, the $1 sushi special which allows me to get my craving for seaweed salad when I don't want to eat too much of it, and all the sides that come with their meal special (salad, soup, edamame, tofu, steamed vegetables). The place is never packed and service is pretty fast, so the dining experience is pretty decent.
The food there is meh. I've had a number of their sushi rolls, and it is just ok. Then I had their vegetable tempura, and it was pretty heavy to eat (and I got like 20 pieces of tempura, which actually made me nauseous afterwards). Another time I've had the shrimp teriyaki, and the shrimps was mediocre. I haven't come by a dish or roll that I can rave about.
If you want fast and nice service and don't mind average Japanese food, then this is the place to go. -

Things I liked:
1. The sushi is cheap but manages to rise above grocery store level.
2. It's usually pretty easy to get a table & the wait staff is reasonably friendly.
3. They have these cute little $1 menu items that are like sushi cups! They roll seaweed around a base of rice and then fill in the top of the cup with all sorts of things. I had a 'cup' of seaweed salad, and a cup of spicy crab last time. it's fun to eat and pretty original!
Things I did not like:
1. $8 cocktails. Really? This is Baltimore! Lighten up with the cocktail prices!
2. See the above comment about being just above grocery store fare. Good, but not that good. -

I had lunch here. The dollar sushi menu is good - basic. I ordered the yellow tail sushi, the yellowtail was fresh, but a on the dry side.
We ordered a salmon avocado roll - great.
The hawaiian roll was AWFUL! The tuna on top was dry, and it was crab salad inside with tons of mayo. It is not say in the menu that it was a crab salad and we were not expecting the mayo. They forgot to put the aspargus in the roll. We asked and the waitress brought out 2 pieces on a separate plate. I am not sure what that was supposed to solve. We couldnt eat the roll.
We also ordered the scallop bento. I have never had scallops that I could not finish. The scallops were fried! It did not say that in the menu! Also, they were chewy and fishy. We got 6 and each could only stomach 1.
I would not go here again, there are much better places. The service was good, and the staff friendly. The tuna and yellowtail were dry and the scallops were not edible. -

I was going to grab fried ice cream here after dinner but after seeing the 35cents wing sign, fate decided to take a different turn. I ended up having 6 pieces of steamed shrimp, 12 pieces of wings, they were teriyaki and barbeque, half and half. Finger lickin' good. The other thing is you must order a drink in order to get the special and the special only runs from 5pm - 7pm. Place isn't too shabby, good music and food. The bar was somewhat amiable. I'm only giving 3 stars cause I've had better wings else where.

I LOVE the location, I love that you can sit by a window and gaze down to the streets as you dine, I love how cheap eating there is.
The miso soup is SOOOO GOOOOOD!!! It's served as an appetizer.
My taste in sushi is simple (salmon roll and dragon roll are my favourites), so their menu is good for me. The quality of fish is good for the price.
The employees are fairly quiet and friendly and they won't interrupt you unless it's to bring you your food or check, and that's how I like it.
They play modern music, ( Jason Mraz- I'm Yours was on today) which I found enjoyable.

If you want something a little classier, don't come here. If you want something tasty and incomplex, then by all means go to this place. -

Aloha Sushi offers a casual dining area upstairs as well as a downstairs bar area.
Currently, they are offering 35 cents for oysters, shrimps, and wings! In addition, everyday (not just happy hour) they are offering $1.00 sushi. For happy hour, they offer 50% off their domestic draft beers! It was awesome. I enjoyed their sushi. Raw bar for oysters was fantastic for that price.
It's not the best sushi joint, but if you're in for a good deal that won't burn a hole in your pocket then this place is good for that! -

There aren't many places in that area you will find with kitchen still open on Sunday after 9pm. I loved the sushi I think the selection is pretty good, my husband loved the teriyaki sea bass (not a fan of sushi), and they have my favorite plum wine in that restaurant. I love sitting by the window and look down. I haven't tried their hibachi just yet.

The thing you have to try is the Sushi Lasagne. It comes in a foil boat and is a baked sushi roll with cream cheese and sauce and comes with either salmon, tuna or scallops. It is very different but very tasty.
I was also there on a Friday night a was surprised at the lack of crowd downstairs. So if you are look for a place to just chill, it is ok for that. -

There are a lot of sushi restaurants in Baltimore, so I feel like you have to do more than just show up. Aloha sushi doesn't stand out to me. The fish quality is okay. Nothing is bad, there is just nothing specials. No special rolls. The decor is an old row house meets eclectic modern. It's nice, but not enough to be the reason I go. The prices are cheap for sushi, but fresh fish can only be so cheap. Even the fact they serve Korean food is not special (so does Geisha). I would say, if you have a coupon or deal, grab dinner, if not save your money for a good dinner.
