Aloha Mountain Cyclery is a small independent bike shop in Carbondale.

Cyclists are some of the most opinionated people you will ever meet, and one of the owners named Darren is no exception. Flossing a sweet wool tweed cap, he evangelized the "steel is real" philosophy, elucidated us on the cult of VW vans and preached the true gospel of Apple computers whilst kidding with a flat-billed "collitch boy" employee for not knowing how to use an old-timey credit card imprinter. The narrative ran non-stop while he was buffing out our new townie and haggling with a customer who was trying to get out of paying for something. Darren is a multi-tasking mofo! He literally was working circles around everyone else in the shop.

Thing is, as a retailer, you never really know the knowledge, experience level or intentions of a new customer. A few weeks back, we had gone into a bike shop across the street and were treated like absolute dirt. We were not even acknowledged when we walked in on one of the salesmen in flagrante delicto with a woman: giving her his best creepy high-pressure sales pitch. He actually walked in front of us and blocked our view of the display we were looking at. He then proceeded to discuss the merits of various "comfort"  saddles while we stood there inches behind them, our view wholly obstructed by this asshat. We may as well have been invisible.

With this in mind, there was not even a hint of condescension or arrogance at Aloha after deciding on a new humble townie, rather than a more expensive ride. Darren took it straight to the wrench-pit and personally did everything that a professional bike shop should do: a full bolt check, retensioned, trued and dished the wheels in the stand, readjusted and lubed all of the cables, chain & pivot points and insisted we come back in a few days for a proper fitting and to change out any components which weren't working out after my honey rode it for a few miles.

Self proclaimed "metal heads", steel frames are highly regarded at Aloha. The racks out front are packed with Surly & Jamis bikes in addition to Yeti & Orbea models, as well as used consignment and demo bikes.

Overall, I unequivocally recommend Aloha Cyclery for their customer service, professionalism and community-oriented attitude. Good job guys.
