You can't find better service and larger portions of delicious food for less money anywhere else in town.

I recommend the spicy tuna roll, spamusubi and chicken katsu. living on pocket change? Grab a few of their burgers.

When I first came here I had my doubts, being that it's a hole in the wall, but after my first visit this became my favorite hole in the wall!

The diversity of healthy to not-so-healthy and vegan to carnivore options ensures that there is something for everyone.

In other words, give this hard working family your business and you won't be disappointed.

I heart bbq chicken and macaroni salad and pair that with a guava nectar equals perfection.  I usually go to l&l or Ono but I wanted to try a different place.  So I scanned yelp and found Aloha island BBQ.

It was in a Vons plaza but kind of hard to find.  It was hidden on the side of the plaza where you kind of have to drive around to find it.  As soon as I walked in I was greeted with the smell of BBQ which was a good start but the cashier was less than inviting.  No smiles, I assume a teen just working to make a lil pocket change but gee a smile wouldn't hurt anyone.  I immediately knew that I was going to order the BBQ chicken with two scoops of Mac salad and guava nectar.  The bill came out to $8.10 which is not bad.

It didn't take too long considering there was only one cook and a couple of orders ahead of mine.  I got my food to go since I didn't want to eat by myself with the cashier staring at me.  As soon as I got home I ripped the bag open.  The chicken was okay, I just wish it had a stronger flavor.  Macaroni salad was a little bland which makes me sad because that's what I was looking forward to.  Although portions are larger than other hawaiian places the food wasn't as great as I anticipated.  I might return but only if I'm in the area or I am having some intense cravings.

Been coming here for pick up's with my bf for almost 2 years for a quick easy dinner.  Owners are this Korean couple which are always so nice and kind!! They don't have the most extensive menu, and prices are average, but I think it is the best one by far around the area, unless you prefer chain like L&L, there is one nearby.

We always get the large BBQ beef combo, a mini BBQ beef combo and a spam masubi.  The spam masubi has a little too much rice for my taste, but I like it.  The BBQ beef is also a bit over marinated/salty, but I think I can say that for most Hawaiian joints.  Large comes with 2 scoops of rice and larger portion of BBQ beef.  Mini only has 1 scoop of rice but that's fine with me and the Mini fills me up just great.  Also comes with a side of mac salad, not the best but will do.  I believe it's $2.25 spam masubi, $6.75 large BBQ beef combo, $4.75 mini combo.  I really think the prices are fair, and they constantly have guests in' n out.

Also great for kids to come pick up a snack or quick meal.  For less than $5 they get a burger meal, or other choices are available.  I think it's a great alternative than fast food (In general, mcDs and Jack in the Box costs $6 on average per meal).

If you live in Walnut area, you should at least check it out once and see if you like it.  This has been my Hawaiian spot for quite some time.  :)  It's great when you don't know what to eat for dinner- hit up this spot!

Parking spot is always available.  Also Visa/MC accept (min charge $10).  Also there's a Vons nearby and a Chevron if you need to pump gas!

Thank you Yelp for helping me find this place!

So a few weeks ago I didn't know what I wanted to eat for dinner. I was having a sushi craving. But for some reason I was also craving some spam musubi. So since sushi is usually expensive, I went searching for the spam musubi.

Yelp led me to Aloha Island BBQ. While I was waiting for my spam musubi to be made, I saw on the dry board that they sold Spicy Tuna Rolls too!! So I got an order of that too. Got my Spam Musubi and Sushi fix satisfied at one place. YEEAHHH! Everything tasted great! I've also tried the BBQ chicken plate.  And let me tell you.. This place got it right! I had the perfect chicken to rice ratio. (if you've read any of my other reviews on Hawaiian BBQ places, I always complain that they don't give enough rice.) This dish also tasted really good. Can't wait to try more stuff!

    Price: Not exspensive at all

Parking: Is easy to find parking.

Thank God I found this place! I've seriously been hooked! I shall see you soon Aloha Island BBQ!

So I came back here yesterday (4/23/12) to order the Chicken Katsu, which according to the other reviewers is what they are good at. I must say that it was, in fact, quite good and has just the right amount of breading. The meat was tender and had enough of a crunch yet not dry or hard. It's definitely cheaper than L&L Hawaiian by a good buck and a half for roughly the same portions for the same dish. I can't complain. I'll be adding more to this review as I try out more of their menu items.

I was starving after a trip to Frank and Sons with my friends. I quickly yelped a close by place that was cheap and I found Aloha Island BBQ.

We rolled in and I thought that the place didn't look too different from L&L or Ono, but I was optimistic. I do have to say that the greatest strength of Aloha Island BBQ is their portion size. I can eat like a tank and by the time I was finished with the bbq chicken/katsu combo, I hated myself. The deep kind of hatred you can only feel for yourself after having gorged yourself nearly half to death on delicious food.

So why 4 stars instead of 5? My biggest gripe would have to be that, this place doesn't really do much different from the aforementioned Hawaiian places. The food tastes very similar, and so are the sides. I can understand this because that it was their food is like, but I would have liked to see them try something unique while being detached from a chain. I tried most of their food (off my friends' plates, another aspect of being a fattie), and I have to say that I was very impressed with their loko moko. I went the safe route and picked the chicken katsu, but I will definitely get their flavorful and savory Loko Moko next time I get a chance.

If you're in the area and want to say goodbye to hunger and expensive prices say Aloha to Aloha Island BBQ!! HEY, they should use that.

I visited this spot after hitting the gym and right before I had to open the shop for work.  It was probably the first time in several months that I had done some weight training, so after the workout, I was ready to consume an entire cow.

After perusing most of the glowing reviews, I wanted to get some items that would give me a good sense of this place.  Having recently fallen in love with Saimin, I ordered a Grilled Spam Noodle Soup.  To go with that, I chose the BBQ Mix Plate to finish things off.

People weren't kidding when they said that the portions were huge in comparison to L&L.  Holy Guacamole!!  Lots of Teriyaki Beef and KBBQ Short Ribs here.  Thank the Gods (BSG reference) that this came with two scoops of rice.  This wasn't gonna work with one scoop.  With the normal Plate Lunches, you can get either a Mini (one scoop of rice) or a Large (two scoops).  The Macaroni Salad was good, but to me, not necessarily better than L&L's.  I actually prefer it when it's served at a cooler temperature for a nice bit of contrast.

A pleasant surprise at the end was the cabbage that lined the bottom of the plate was incredibly edible due to the absorption of the juices/gravy!  Yums!

The broth of the Grilled Spam Noodle Soup was amazing!  I'm definitely gonna get this again and again and again.  The noodles here were thicker than I expected, almost Udon-like.  A nice amount of veggies were included.

This is a local diamond in the rough that I'm glad I took the time to visit.

Tastier, cheaper, and bigger portion sizes than L&L's.

I have turned Chris K. into a believer with the mac salad here. (I think the difference is that more garlic is used to season the salad.) The mini size here equates to a regular L&L plate, and cheaper.

And the best part of Aloha Island is that it is right next door to Boba V Cafe. $1.50 boba with awesomely cheap and plentiful Hawaiian BBQ... can't get better than that!

Lady is pretty nice. Place is clean and it's cheaper too.

I always get the safe thing, the chicken katsu that's in all Hawaiian places. It's juicy and not greasy. They give plenty of sauce and the macaroni is better here than in other places. Portions here are bigger than Ono and L&L. The mini size is plentiful as well.

If I remember correctly, you need to have a certain amount to use the atm without getting charged a fee.

4 stars? yall must be dizzy..
let me start by saying the counter lady was very friendly and the place seemed clean.
but i will not be back to try the food.
chicken katsu, made with butterflied filets? theres more breading than meat! the sauce was actually the kind we have in hawaii for katsu, super sweet, but i'd actually prefer the japanese kind. i also tried the udon, and the soup was very dark and salty as if they added soy sauce.. the horror. the mac salad wasn't bad, whatever thats worth.
i know there arent much options in walnut, but i'd have to recommend going to L&L over this place. thats the only chain in socal thats actually from hawaii anyway.

Located off Lemon & La Puente, this place is definitely a diamond in the rough.  It's a mom & pop team and they've got this place poppin'!

    I ordered 2  BBQ Chicken/Katsu combos to-go.

    PROS:
    *Huge portions
    *Freshly made-to-order
*Their frying oil for the katsu is very clean and tasted very light. I believe  they replace the oil every so often
    *Juicy bbq chicken
    *Super friendly & great service
*way better than L&L hands down

    CONS:
    * It's a bit hidden, so it can be hard to find.

It may be a bit hard to understand the cashier, but bear with her since English isn't her first language.  We all speak the same language when it comes to food. ;)

I was a bit reluctant to share this place, but now that a couple Hawaiian places are closed down around the D.B./Walnut/Industry area, I thought I'd give some people a heads up about this place.

PS - I'll be back for their musubi.  I've heard it's a hit!

This place is literally a 10 min walk from my house and I love it WAYYY better than L&L. Me and my sister are regulars and we always come here when we have nothing for dinner.

Their mini portions are basically a regular sized portion at L&L, which I absolutely love! My boyfriend orders the chicken katsu, which basically taste the same as L&L, but it's a couple bucks cheap.

Call me white-washed, but I'm addicted to their burgers. I really have no idea why =/. SOMEBODY HELP ME! Every time I go I always order their Cheeseburger combo and then I go home and use my leftover Chick-Fil-A sauces and dump it on the burger. It's absolutely delicioussss! Their fries are always fresh and have just the right amount of salt. Their burgers actually look like the picture too, way better than McDonalds!

My only complaint is that their soda/drinking fountain doesn't offer lemonade D:. For someone who doesn't drink soda, my options are pretty much limited to their water and iced tea. Since I don't like iced tea either, I just end up filling my cup with water =/.

Pretty much a way better version of L&L.
Much bigger portions for a much lower price. The mini size at Aloha is the same size as the big size at L&L, but under $5!
Oh and the cabbage! The cooked cabbage beneath the bbq adds that extra taste that makes the plate SO good. The katsu is really good as well and not very greasy like other places. Oddly enough, the burgers are decent too, especially for how inexpensive it is.

    I'd give this place a 4.5.

I love the food here and the husband and wife, I'm assuming, are so friendly and they always greet me and/or my boyfriend when we come in. Probably because we come in so often.  They have a variety of food, but I must admit that I've eaten here sooo much that I don't crave it as much as I use to.

But there is a new girl that works there, and she should be a little more friendly.. she works the register and I swear she never smiles. lol... even though I say Thank you, have a nice day! hahaha. but oh well, one girl won't stop me from coming back here.

Spam masubi, chicken katsu masubi are very good.  Chicken katsu is very popular and I like their macaroni salad! cheeseburger combo & Loco Moco is also good. (:

This place has got to be one of walnut's rare gems. just kidding not really but it is one of my favorites. They give you twice the amount of food than you would get at L&L and it tastes just as good!

I pefer L&L's macaroni salad over alohas but I rarely eat it anyways. The spam musubi's sauce is a little scarse but other than that it all remotely tastes the same and I like to live my life on a budget [:

Had to write a review for this place after having a last straw experience with L&L. Aloha is slightly further for me but it's oh so worth it.

The BBQ/Chicken Katsu combo is where it's at. Perfectly crisp, almost light tasting (oh but it's not!), even their smaller size contains a mountain of golden delicious goodness. I'm also a big fan of their macaroni salad, mostly cause it doesn't have any tuna in it.

Don't know how a recent reviewer had a bad experience with the woman at the counter. She's never been anything but nice to me, and is always more than happy to give me an extra cup of teriyaki sauce.

    Friendly proprietors.

We enjoyed their meat dishes, Udon & fried shrimp.

Really disappointed in the Mahi-Mahi, sorry.  It was more like fish jerky.

Confusing old menu. Need to reprint their current offerings.

We don't go to L&L very often but from what I remember I liked Aloha Island BBQ better.

Looking forward to re-rate higher after our next visit.

Better flavor than L & L and much better prices!
The full size plate of chicken katsu is i think $4.95 or about $5 a plate while over at L & L is like $7. Also, their burgers and fries are pretty good for about $3.50 a combo. The only thing I can say that is better over at L & L is the spam musubi. They put a little too much sauce and it does have a different flavor, but it's still pretty good. Doesn't get so crowded here and there is still a flat screen t.v.

L&L, you say? What's that? Have you been to Aloha Island BBQ? That's got two L's in it...

The size of their MINI is literally the very same size of a REGULAR at L&L and their prices are cheaper than L&L too! Save your money by going to Aloha! My boyfriend and I are regulars there and almost always order the regular Chicken Katsu with a Strawberry Kiwi Snapple on the side. By the time we're both full with satisfaction, the leftover Chicken Katsu is enough to make a mini plate; that's an exaggeration but we do have a good amount leftover. Occasionally, we'll be extra hungry and order Spam Musubi or Spicy Tuna Roll; both of which are good!

Go to Aloha. Your taste buds, stomach, and wallet can thank me later by giving this review a Useful/Funny/Cool vote.

It's always good to support mom & pop shops over chains, in my opinion.  So I prefer Aloha over L & L.  The portions are humungous and the food tastes just as good.  The parents that own this place are so polite and friendly.  You can tell they really appreciate your business.  The daughter that works there always looks irritated but I remember being her age and it does kind of suck to be working for your parents, probably 24/7 for little or no pay.  She's probably rather be with her friends at night and on the weekends.  One time I saw the mom get all mad at her.  It was kinda funny.

Their chicken katsu is so good and they give so much.  Same with the katsu shrimps.  I don't really like their spam musubi because they don't sprinkle furikake on the rice.  And I wish they didn't put chopped onions in their macaroni salad but it's still good.

Overall, I like the place and I'll continue to go there over L & L whenever possible.

A LOT better than L&L. They have friendly staff and better quality food. When you compare the menu to L&L, it's very similar but there's more meat in the katsu, less fat on the spareribs, and you finish your meal with a less greasy feeling. I attribute that to my assumption that their food preparation is fresher than a chain restaurant like L&L. My sister told me that her friend who works or used to work at L&L told her that L&L prepares their food in ways that nobody wants to know, and if you find out, you will be grossed out.

We ordered catering from them for a party and they had to close the place that day so they could finish our order in time, lol. Everyone loved the spareribs, it was all gone, lol.

Having grown up in the Monterey Pk/San Gabriel area, I was looking forward to my lunch at Aloha Island BBQ.  But....I was not totally impressed with my visit.  Don't get me wrong, the food portions were big, the food was hot and of good quality, but....it was not up to the taste of Ono Grill/San Gabriel or Shaka's/ Monterey Pk.

Me and my son ordered the mini Chicken plate and Beef ribs.  The meat was good sized and tasted good.  The Mac salad was average and the cabbage served underneath the meat was plain, but as with everything else...average.

The price is reasonable, but you do get what you pay for...

Your standard Hawaiian BBQ place. Chicken, spare ribs, Musubi, Katsu, Burgers, Moco Loco, Ahi...the list continues. All are pleasantly sized portions. And well prepared. If they had the same type of crinkle cut fries that L&L had they would be perfect. In fact I still prefer this place to L&L.

Move over L&L! I have found a new love and her name is Aloha Island. Sure she isn't as beautiful as you are but what matters the most is on the inside: good eatin!

    -Interior
A very small restaurant, there are a few tables to sit at but I think you're better off just getting it to go. There is a self-serve fountain drink and restrooms, simple layout for what room they have.

    -Service
I ordered, waited about 8 minutes tops before I got my order. The girl who took my order was speaking very softly, I barely made out what she was saying but it worked out in the end. Service here is faster than L&L's I would say; although there was only four other people there, two were waiting for food. Can't complain about the speedy service though.

    -Food
A mini plate is similar to the mini plate found at L&L's from the one scoop of rice and side order, but they load it up with the meat. I ordered a chicken katsu which was fried goodness, the sauce complemented the katsu because it had a nice little zing to it. Now I'm sitting here half falling asleep and writing this review.

My verdict and my heart as chosen Aloha Island BBQ as my new local Hawaiian BBQ joint. Cheap eats with great meats, Aloha and Mahalo to this restaurant!

This place is awesome!!! The portions they serve in a "mini" would be called a large if you went to another Hawaiian BBQ place. I always get the mini katsu and I usually have a hard time finishing that. The quality of food is exactly the same as you would get a L&L but the huge portions and super low price are what keep me coming back. I usually order a mini katsu, which is the size of a large at L&L, and that costs me $4.65. HOW CAN YOU BEAT THAT!?!?!?  The price is amazing and the food is great! If you're in the mood for Hawaiian BBQ, definitely check this place out, it won't disappoint. My only little tiny complaint about this place is that they are stingy with their lemons when you ask for some, so I usually bring my own lemon juice :)

Better than L&L and larger portions too. The BBQ Chicken is my fave and so is the Katsu, but  they over cook it sometimes so it tastes crispier, so i have to tell them to not fry it so long. I like the smaller and less busy Hawaiian restaurants like this spot. Come hungry, leave full, and your wallet won't be hurting either. 4 stars.

My family is from Hawaii.  I have had both good and bad Hawaiian food in Southern California.  This is unfortunately not one of the good places.  I agree that this is a better place than L & L, but that is not saying too much.  If you want authentic Hawaiian food, go to King's Hawaiian, Aloha Cafe, the Loft or even Rutt's.  This place is more like a little fast food teri place.  Don't get me wrong, it's not horrible for a little fast food teri place (but it is not Hawaiian food).

This use to be my favor it place to go after I got out of school. It was walking distance from my house. This place has the best chicken katsu it's so juicy in the middle and crispy on the outside and you get so much of it too. I also had some kind of beef there. That was good too. It's so much better than L&L bbq. Also the staff that works their are so nice they makes you want to come back again and again.I miss this place.

I tried their BBQ chicken burger. $2.49, nothing special about it. Basically a of piece bbq chicken meat between a seseme seed bun (which is smothered in mayo..eww) tons of lettuce and bbq. bon appetite! =) A good choice for something cheap if you're on the go!

This is one of my favorite spots when I was in highschool. Their serving size is definitely worth the price. A mini is almost the same size as a large at l&l. Love the chicken katsu (although the batter seems to be more than the chicken itself). Great amount of food for spending less than 5 dollars. And on top of that, the manager is so friendly. Great place if your trying to get  full with a minimal amount of money

I use to work here. quit like probably a  year ago but not because of them but because i was moving. I love the owners they are like my second parents. Always friendly and nice. I couldn't have asked for a better boss :] I love the food there, they're so generous in the amount of food they give. Love everything about that place and great for not spending so much on hawaiian food :]

I went here on a lunch break. It was okay, wasn't too bad, wasn't too good either. I got the chicken katsu and teriyaki beef combo, and it comes with two scoops of rice and a scoop of macaroni salad. It's a decent portion for the price, better than L&L's. However, the chicken katsu, I felt like there wasn't too much chicken. It wasn't thick pieces, so I mostly just tasted the breading. The teriyaki beef had a lot of flavor, but sometimes, I felt like it was too overwhelming. I would go back to this place and try their fish plates.

To run it down for you quickly, it's a BETTER L & L's.

Environment and Location: On the corner of Lemon and La Puente, Aloha is located in a place heavy with restaurants but trumps them none the less. It is conveniently located next to Wells Fargo with a BofA down the street in case you need some cash. It isn't cash only, but if your bill is under $5 there is a $0.25 charge to use card. Being in a heavily populated shopping mall it's a good place to go if you're planning on going to the bank, get dry cleaning done, or getting some gas.

Food: If you've ever been to the L & L's at Crossroads in Torrance you'll feel right at home. The mini size has as much food as the L & L's regular size, and the regular is just massive. Whenever I order a regular I'm already thinking about when to eat the leftovers. But just because you're getting a lot of food doesn't mean the taste suffers. Their KATSU is tenderer than L & L's so you won't have that tearing problem when you only want half of a piece. The bbq beef is pretty much the same. They also have Japanese dishes like sushi and udon if you wanted some variety.

Price: A mini katsu with one scoop of rice and mac salad will cost you $4.25 to put it into perspective. It is a bargain and if you have a craving for a big portion size without putting a dent in your wallet, this is the place.

Bottom Line: I used to live down the street for a year, and I would go at least once a week. It's that good.
