Aliso Viejo, CA
I had the Aloha Bowl (Bi Bim Bap). It was really good even though it was not like I expected since it was not like a cold Korean style bi bim bap. It consisted of the mung bean salad, glass noodles, a few vegetables and the BBQ chicken all over rice. Everything was warm/hot. It came with two sauces on the side: a clear sweet teriyaki-like sauce and their sweet/spicy sauce. I had the meal to go, it filled the whole box so it was super filling and worth the cheap price. Overall, it was really good. I would have preferred a few more veggies so I dont feel like its a total carb load but I'll get over it. I would definitely come back and get the same thing.
Oh, and I got a POG. I now want to go to Hawaii just to drink POG on the plane. -

Mission Viejo, CA
One of the few places in Mission Viejo that serves Hawaiian BBQ. Had three items there and left me feeling a little cheated.
Chicken BBQ - Good size chicken, flavor was above average. I felt that for the price I paid, I should have gotten more rice and sides.
Beef BBQ - Not that good, dry and flavorless. They tried to mask the cheap quality beef with teriyaki sauce, but didn't work really well.
Spam matsubi - Way too much rice, very think slice of spam.
Environment/Service - Interior was a little dark and had a strange vibe in there. What's up with the half water fall on the wall with pictures of Hawaii from the 80's? The cashier was nice and the staff was attentive.
Overall - meh, I've had better. I was really hoping that this place would be more like L&L or Ono, but it's not. -

Barely Hawaiian food...there a lot of better places around, but I'll give it three stars for trying. However, everything was way too sweet. I suspect it was their Korean influence in the kitchen.
I had the spicy spare ribs but the sauce was way too sweet. The dressing on the salad was a sugar bomb too. We had the pot-stickers, kim-chee, and bean sprouts. Okay but nothing to go back for.
Sorry about the review...upside, friendly people!!! -

Knock another one off the tremendous bookmark list! As I recently moved out this way I've been trying the local eats hoping to find a gem in the rough.
Today I came to Aloha BBQ wanting some Hawaiian eats. I unfortunately strayed away from the typical Beef Short Ribs or Pork Spare Ribs. After reviewing their small menu of 20 or so items I opted for the WIKI WIKI NOODLES " CHAE" because I've never seen it at a Hawaiian joint. Korean isn't it? Chap Chae?
"Clear glass noodles stir fried with broccoli, onions and carrots in a sesame-soy sauce seasoned with garlic and toasted sesame seeds. Your choice of chicken, pork, beef or tofu."
Korean if you ask me, but nonetheless I went ahead and ordered it to see what may be Hawaiian about it. I'm not sure if it's my love for Korean food or what, but I couldn't hate on this even if it was not one bit Hawaiian. The glass noodles were squirmy and hold a lot of flavor. The stir fried broccoli and carrots give a crunch to the whole ordeal and the chicken adds yummy protein to the whole mix. For $6.75, the plate was pretty massive and thoroughly enjoyable. It was part flavor, and part fun as them gosh darn glass noodles were so hard to devour with a fork!
The only thing Hawaiian about the meal today was the spam musubi I tried. If you look at my picture, it's like a giant whale! When they mean spam in between blocks of rice, they are not joking! Something unique about this musubi is that there's a thin layer of egg in it which adds more saltiness to it. This musubi however did not have any of the soy sauce which I tend to like with my musubi's, but it was still a bundle of salty goodness.
In all, as probably the only "Hawaiian" themed restaurant around these neighborhoods, I wasn't thoroughly impressed partially by the item that I ordered, but also by their identity crisis. It's a blend of food from everywhere. I mean, why do they have ramen as part of the menu? I wish they had more Hawaiian food such as loco moco, kalua pork, or laulau, but it's 3/5 as what I ate today wasn't really that bad. -

Super Ono! That's Hawaiian for delicious. Aloha Bbq has been under new ownership for awhile, but the food is just as good. I've found the portions to be about the same, although the prices have gone up about $1 more per item. Another change was that the beef is now cut up in more manageable pieces, much easier to eat. Thank you for that.
The macaroni salad is really good and the cabbage salad is also really good, with a great dressing. Tasty Japanese white sticky rice, delicious flavor on the meats and chicken. The chicken Katsu is super yummy as well. I really want to try the Saimin, next time. They also have a great selection of drinks from Hawaiian Sun, along with the soda machine. They do shaved ice, have to try that in the heat of summer.
They also do chicken curry every day now, it used to just be a special on certain days of the week. I don't personally like it, as it is not all white breast meat chicken, but if you like mixed chicken, then you would love it! Too bad for me, the curry sauce was really good.
This is a small place, but friendly staff, it's clean, nice island music playing and they are even carrying some high-end hawaiian body scrub products, ask the cashier for a sample. A tip, they are closed on Sundays.
To the owners of Aloha Bbq, perhaps for the future, open for breakfast? Can you say Moco Loco and Portugese Sausage & Eggs and Macadamia Nut Pancakes? -

Could not disagree with you all 4 and 5 star people more...this place sucked. I could see the kitchen was not very clean and very disorganized. The food was bad, like really bad. I had the pork ribs and beef combo..ribs were a funky shade of grey, the part I ate (very little) was tough and had a bad taste. The beef was very tough as well, like beef flavored chewing gum. If you want good Hawaiian, try the place on Bristol and Baker. I would not go back ever.

We also had to stop in to Aloha while we visited a few weeks ago. We have been there several times in the past 5 years - I will echo the reviews regarding excellent, quality food, made to order (10-15 min wait). We typically order a combo platter and two of us share it. The BBQ meats are all thinly sliced, marinated, and grilled so that they are still juicy and flavorful. The rice is fantastic, and I love the macaroni salad. When we visit, we feel like we've been transported back to Maui. Be sure to have the Hawaiian Ice for dessert (and don't forget the ice cream)! Service is always friendly, and the owners are there often - and working. I will always come back when I know the owners care about their customers.

Good Hawaiian BBQ!
We were a little confused as to where this place was, since I've only really been to the Starbucks in this area.
The bean sprout salad is yummmmy, gotta love that light sesame flavor. The macaroni salad is pretty good too, not too much mayonnaise.
Pork BBQ - pretty good, not too sweet
Chicken Katsu - VERY good crunch, but I wish the Bulldog sauce was on the side... not put on pre-serving
I think I would have appreciated this place a lot more if it weren't for the beginnings of a migraine that made me put my fork down.
Overall - willing to come back and try their other stuff
- the rice was also a little on the mushy side -

Simply the greatest. A friend and I have been going to this fine place for years. It changed ownership some time ago but the transition was so smooth that you wouldn't notice. The same great food and the new owners were every bit as friendly and caring as the previous ones. I usually order the Saimin and my friend orders the Ramen. We also have an order of potstickers - delicious. We have never been disappointed in all the years that we have been coming here. The place is always clean. The food is served really hot. The prices are reasonable and NO we have never been offered and we have never asked for a 'freebie' of any sort. So long as they continue to serve food like they do at present we will be more than happy to keep on eating there.

Pros: Tasty Hawaiian food
Cons: Kinda pricey compared to L&L
I've come here a couple times and I normally get the BBQ chicken plate ($7.50) or the Waikiki plate ($10.95), a 2 choice combination plate. In general, the food here is good, but nothing too amazing. The plates usually come with your choice of meat, scoop of rice, and scoop of macaroni salad. It's your run of the mill Hawaiian joint, just like L&L. Personally, I prefer L&L, but this place does the job if you're craving some macaroni salad and you're in the area. -

This was a very delicious find--a highlight this past weekend. Very tasty Hawaiian plate lunch style food. I got the Haleiwa three combo plate, which is a tad expensive, but is enough food for a Samoan. I ate it all up and fast. The service and vibe was very aloha. A sign said chicken curry on Mondays, so I'm coming back to Aloha BBQ for some curry.
You are not going to get a lot of Hawaiian BBQ down here in South OC so you got to take what you can get to a degree. Down here in South OC there is a mini-chain called Nalu's that calls itself a Hawaiian food joint and has pictures of surfing and surf logos and stickers on the wall and a bunch of other Haole shit and might as well be a wahoos or selling Vans shoes in there. Nalu's is a California, Haole wet dream version of a Hawaiian food place--there's nothing aloha about Nalu's. -

Ever since getting some Hawaiian BBQ the previous week, I have been craving it pretty much day and night. Not sure why... other than the fact it tastes awesome! I remember Aloha BBQ opening up a long a$$ time ago in Mission Viejo, but I never really interesting in giving it a try. UNTIL NOW!
We ended up ordering BBQ Pork, Beef Short Ribs, Wiki Wiki Noodles with chicken. The BBQ Pork and Short Ribs were great. Wonderful flavors, meat was not dry but very juicy, and sauce was great. Even the side salad and macaroni salad that it came with was pretty good despite the small portion size. The noodles.... meh. The chicken in the noodles was actually pretty freaking good, but the noodles and the dish itself... its just a flat out pass. Don't get me wrong, I love all the different BBQ meats they have, but I wish the side portions were larger to balance out all the meat on the plate.
Overall, my BBQ craving was satisfied and the pork and short ribs were tasty. If your looking to dine in, there are only about 5 or so tables for seating as this is a very small family owned place. Has a pretty good price to quality ratio. 4 stars! -

Growing up in Hawaii, I have high expectations for Hawaiian BBQ. It seems to me that Aloha BBQ is more closely related to a Korean BBQ joint than Local Hawaiian food.
I ordered the Chicken Katsu which came with rice, mac salad, and some greens. I'll give them credit for presentation, the katsu sauce was delicately pre-sauced over the chicken. Personally, I'm used to dipping the chicken in the sauce myself, but it looked pretty enough to mention.
Looking at my haole friend's BBQ plate, it was prepared in a more Korean-style BBQ then Local Hawaiian food. I wish I ordered the short ribs because I'm sure they would have turned out great.
The shave ice is too coarse because they use a machine which takes ice cubes and grinds them. I expect shave ice from a Hawaiian joint to be made from cylinder blocks and "razored" into fluffy snow.
There's just too much of a disconnect between expectations and what was delivered to this kama'aina. -

The food is pretty good, but you can totally see the dripping grease.
There was probably three or four other in-dine customers and it actually took a while for us to receive our food but the server apologized and thanked us for waiting.
I ordered the chicken meal? Which came with chicken, rice, scoop of macaroni salad and a little of there salad? It was okay, the plate was pretty greasy. It didn't taste bad though, it was good but I just didn't like seeing straight up oil on my plate.
The employees were nice, and the decor was cute, three stars= A-OK -

Rated 5 stars on 5/12/2010, updating now to let locals know that Mr Lee seems to have either sold this business or retired.
None of the "usual" employees are left, the new cashier indicated that Mr Lee was no longer working there (the line was "we took over", or something like that, so not sure if it's a sale or retirement).
In any case, the food is still good (portions MAY be slightly smaller? Or maybe Mr. Lee was giving me unusually big portions because he recognized me every week?), the place is still clean, the menu is unchanged (new girl indicated they didn't plan on changing the food), so let's just hope they don't ruin it.1 Previous Review: Show all »

Came here years ago and the food sucked! Gave it a try recently since something is keeping them viable. Imagine you're at home and need something to eat. You find Top Ramen, some left over vegetables, some pieces of grilled chicken, and hot sauce and toss it together. Now imagine you just paid $7 bones for this. That's what you get at this joint. If you're craving for some soup - walk your way down some stores to Pho King Way. Don't pay for something you can make at home especially if you an make it better.

Can't believe I've never reviewed this place before. I've been to Hawaii and went out of my way to eat at hole-in-the-wall local spots and this place is as good as or better than anything on the Islands.
The food is all cooked to order so be prepared to wait about 10 minutes for your food. The chicken and pork are lean, thin, crispy and juicy! The sauces up front to add to your food are a perfect finish. I love the sweet and spicy sauce. The rice is also completely moist and addictive. The mac salad isn't too mayonnaise-y either, it's just the right amount of creaminess.
The owner is always there and is super nice! I do not have a single compliant! It's that good! I come here at least once a month! Definitely one of my top three favorite restaurants in Orange County! -

The Lee family runs this place and you'll never find more friendly, hard working folk, willing to sacrifice to serve you food they obviously love to prepare.
My Faves: Mr. Lee's home made Kimchi rules! The six succulent pot stickers with a tart and tasty ginger-soy sauce, sprinkled with fresh cut green onion. And don't miss their gigantic hand made Musubi!
If you want an honest to goodness home made meal with all the heart that goes with it, this is the place.....
Everything we've tried has been really good!
Try their catering menu for your next event! You'll be a hero with your friends. -

Maybe my expectations were too high and maybe I need to eat here a couple more times, but so far I'm not really impressed. I think you can get a comparable meal for less dinero at Flame Broiler. For $9 bucks my spare ribs were incredibly fatty and not spicy - like the menu warned. Plus the portions weren't at all 'aloha' - ask anyone, Hawaiian food is normally served in generous proportions. My whole meal was also tinged with a weird chemical salt flavor - the taste of meat tenderizer powder to be specific. I am super sensitive about that flavor, some people can't taste it, lucky them ...
Anyways, the actual location is charming but the parking sux. The regulars order off-the-menu masubi, maybe I should try that next time. I'm not giving up on Aloha just yet ... -

I needed to find a new Hawaiian place for my parents and found this place on yelp. I agree it's more Korean than Hawaiian, but that's not really a bad thing! The food was good I like the short ribs. The guy working there was super nice and even opened the door for me when I left because I had my hands full with my 8 month old baby :) we will be back!

4.5 Stars
Every once in awhile I crave some Hawaiian grub to remind me of my vacation on the main island. It was the most relaxing vacation of my life because I accidental left my cell phone in my truck at LAX. An IT guy without his phone is rare and the best thing that could have happened to me. The Big Guy in the Sky was looking out for me.
Anyways, I was cruising on Yelp looking for some Hawaiian grub and found Aloha BBQ. From all the readings, this Mission Viejo location was the clear winner over the Lake Forest location. I called them up to get their exact location and I had the sweetest, kindest girl on the other end. She was happy, upbeat and didn't hang up until I was satisfied.
If you are wondering, Aloha BBQ is located on Alicia and Jeronimo in the Gateway Center right next to the Liquor Store. I walked into this small and cozy restaurant and noticed the high ceiling with the beams right away. The high ceilings really work at this place, as it makes this small place more spacious looking. I was greeted by the owner and the girl on the phone as I went up to the register to order the #4 Beef short ribs for $8.95. This is Korean style short ribs with rice, a small salad and macaroni salad.
There is a hand written sign on the soda machine that reads something like the food here is grilled to order and not fried on a pan and will take longer. I knew I was in for a little wait but that was the reason I chose this place. I never complain about waiting for fresh cooked food. Besides the wait wasn't that long.
My meal was brought to my table by the friendly girl who gave me directions on the phone. My food was very good. Aloha BBQ in Mission Viejo is the best over the counter Hawaiian grub I have eaten. The Korean style short ribs were juicy, tender and flavorful. The rice was moist and tasted even better with the rib juice all over it. Both the cabbage salad and mac salad were very good. The owner asked me several times how everything was.
The food was 4 - 4.5 Stars. With the excellent friendly attitude of the people here, I could not give them any less than 4.5 Stars, so that's what they'll earn in my book. 4.5 Stars.Listed in: Mission Viejo, BBQs of the World

Everything that I have had at Aloha BBQ is wonderful: be it the short ribs, bbq pork, terryaki chicken, etc. I love their macaroni salad and the best part of the Aloha BBQ is definitely the owner and how much he cares about his customers. On our third visit, he noticed that we only ate the macaroni side salad and not the green salad so he suggested we just get two scoops of the macaroni salad. Needless to say, we were blown away that he noticed and grateful for the suggestion. He always welcomes us when we come, and very often brings us free samples of his other menu items.
I love it, you should go get some right now. -

Lady picked up from here on the way to folks' house... meat was good quality and had least amount of fat of any Hawaiian spot I've been to (and I've been to a lot) in the last 5 years in OC... Definitely Korean-style Hawaiian (hence not a full 5 stars), but still great grub and healthy munchies... looking forward to trying it (and more stuff on the menu) again when in South County again... Hope they keep up the yummy work =)

I have been to this restaurant several times and it is always delicious. I usually get the Waikiki Special with beef short ribs and pork spare ribs and double macaroni salad (great stuff!). My wife has the bbq beef and double macaroni salad and my step-daughter has the bbq chicken with double macaroni salad (Like I said, the macaroni salad rocks!). The sauces for the meats are favorful and compliment the meats very well. The potsticker are really good and I love the ginger/soy sauce that comes with it. There is always plenty of food.
I always get take out, but the place is very small and is run by a family. The family is always friendly and cheerful. I would suggest ordering in advance if you are taking out; everything is made to order.
My only real gripe is that the quaility of meat could be a little bit better for the price. This is kind of fast food and most of the meals are around $10 a plate. -

I really enjoyed my meal here. I got the pork spare ribs. They were really good but not as spicy as I expected them to be with all the warning signs. I would have given more stars but I think most of the dishes are over priced and need to be a dollar or two cheaper. My plate only came with three ribs.

I was in Mission Viejo area last month and not sure what to have for lunch. As I drove around the shopping mall and seeking a good place for lunch. I found Aloha BBQ, was a bit hesitant because all Hawaiian BBQ got tons of sugar in it and of course the BBQ sauce taste mostly sweet with a bit of soy sauce taste to it.
To my suprise that Aloha BBQ also had other ingredients to their BBQ sauce then just sugar and soy sauce, by the taste of it, I believe they had used some ginger, and orange juice to it, so it has more flavor to thveral average Hawaiian BBQ taste, surgary. I like the bean sprout salad (just like the one that they serve in Korean restaurant). The services was friendly and fast, and as for the pricing, I would say it is reasonable. I paid just under $10 for my plate, that come with two types of salads, and some rice on the side. It was pretty full filling and I actually couldn't finish my plate.
This joint also play Hawaiian music and with all the Hawaiian related poster on the wall, it does kind of made me feel like I am in Hawaii for about an hour. I really enjoy having lunch here. -

Went with a friend for lunch yesterday, when we got there, we were informed that they were out of Katsu. I asked the cashier why they couldn't make more, he said that it takes 24 hours to make their chicken katsu (apparently they're using the Thomas Keller recipe). I grew up in Hawaii, and have been to almost all of the local places and have NEVER been told that they ran out of katsu and that they couldn't make more.
Adding insult to injury, the cost for a 2 item combo plus drink was $13.50!! For this type of money for a plate lunch, would have at least expected the food to be made to order, it tasted like it was prepared ahead of time and reheated, and that the portions would be larger, there was less food than the mini plates from most other places.
Not sure what happened to this place, it has been a few years since my last visit, but I don't remember it being this bad. Won't be going back anytime soon. -

I was driving through Mission Viejo feeling really hungry as usual and I saw Aloha BBQ in a strip mall. I love Hawaiian BBQ so I had to partake of course.
Funny little place with nice people. Very similar to one of my favorite places, L&L but no Hawaiian people. I ordered the BBQ beef and chicken plate. Nothing really special and the macaroni was not nearly as good as L&L. Portion size was small but still did the job. Overall, not the best but not the worst. I still will make the trek to Irvine if I'm cravin the Hawaiian style food. -

I tried Aloha with a dear friend tonight and known Aloha fanatic. I had the Haliewa (3 meat combo with bbq chicken, bbq beef, and bbq spicy port ribs). I really enjoyed the side of macaroni salad and their kimchi.
I'm anxious to get back for another round.
I've heard that their bowls of ramen are to-die-for as is their shaved ice.

A nice little mom and pop place in a very busy strip mall that interestingly enough has another island themed restaurant that I cant remember. On to the food:
I ordered the combo with korean short ribs and bbq chicken mixed plate. Ribs were delicious and the chicken tender and good. A scoop of rice, a small cabbage salad and macaroni salad.
I am a macaroni salad addict and it is so hard to find any place that can make it that well. They either buy it in or make a halfhearted attempt at it and fall flat. At Aloha, the mac was close.... A little more seasoning, maybe some crunch from a bellpepper or red onion and they would be approaching.
All in all, this is a fine little establishiment and I'll be back to try the other items on the menu.
