In the 3+ years that I worked in Clayton, never made to Almond's - it always seemed too fancy for my hot dog loving ways. Turns out that this place *is* a tad upscale but nothing that the average pants wearing, wipe your nose with a tissue Joe couldn't handle :)

Called ahead the day before to make a reservation (again, was under the impression that they needed to know these things ahead of time) and the table they saved for us was super cool and comfy. Instead of regular dining chairs, we both sat in padded armchairs. Cool!

Soup of the day was gumbo, which we had to try due to the impending Mardi Gras celebrations. Spicy and hearty. For lunch, I had the BBQ sandwich, which was a little too heavy on the BBQ sauce for my taste but I'm really picky about how I like my BBQ sammies. It was my bad for not specifying how I wanted it...  My dining companion had the cheeseburger and practically had a food orgasm at the table. It was just that good! Dessert was an added bonus - a chocolate lava torte with a side of vanilla ice cream. Yum! I could eat that all day!

Our service was exceptional! In a restaurant that has actual linen tablecloths, you always wonder if the staff is going to be snobbish or rude. Not at all! Our server was friendly, funny and attentive, but not "in your face". I would go back just to have him wait on us again.

Meals here aren't much pricer than Companion next door or anything that you'd pick up to-go at Straubs... good to know in case I want to take a former co-worker or friend out to lunch!

Decor: I can see why/how people may see that this place looks a bit upscale, with its dimmer lighting, white tableclothes and chalkboard menu. I was dressed pretty casual and it seemed fine. It's a nice size restaurant, not too big, not too small.

Service: Fine, if not a bit slow (complete opposite to what others said about hurrying us?) We had to wait a while to get our waitress to take our orders and then a little longer to get our food.

Food: Nothing to rave about. I got the pan fried chicken, which I thought was fine but nothing spectacular. My friend got the gumbo, which is a great deal, but he thought it was also nothing spectacular.

Bottom Line: While this is a fine establishment, I'd prefer to go somewhere else to eat just because I like other places better.

Love the food and the ambiance at Almond's - I've tried several entrees, but my fave is still the fried chicken. Others with me have raved about the gumbo.

My one (big) complaint is that they rush you through your meal. I HATE when restaurants do this. You know, someone clears your salad plate as you are still chewing the last bite. Almost immediately, another person sets your entree down in front of you. I still have half my entree, my companion has several bites left, and they come by to ask if they can clear his plate. After taking one bite of our dessert, the server set the check down. And when we push back our chairs to stand up, they are already clearing and cleaning the table.

If it weren't for this issue, Almond's would have five stars from me, but this has happened enough times that it really detracts from the experience.

I think the beef filet at Almonds is extremely UNDERRATED in this town.
WOW!  I have ordered the beef filet twice in a row, and was SUPER amazed at the quality.

It is cooked EXACTLY how you like it and it comes with sides all for less than $20! It's a steal for the quality, taste, AND location of the restaurant (Downtown Clayton).  I took an out of town guest here recently, and he agreed that the filet was outstanding.

My favorite places in STL to get steak would be Citizen Kanes and Annie Gunn's.  Almond's is very close to the quality of the filets at these places, but at a WAY cheaper price.

My personal opinion: Morton's down the street in Clayton is WAY overrated and overpriced.  It's good - but not nearly as good as the above three.

Give this one a try.  I have had other entrees at Almond's and they were good, but it's the filet that stood out and made me want to write this review in the first place.  The service that I have experienced has been average to above-average each time.

There is only one other review of this restaurant so far, and for the record, I will have to agree to disagree with the author. I am a huge fan. I spent two birthdays here (both mine) and thoroughly enjoyed each experience. I also went on non-birthday occasions, and would make many more reservations here if I still lived anywhere near the area.

Every dish is perfectly cooked here, but if you don't like southern food, this is not your place. Originally from Nashville, I revel in southern-based dishes. And what a place to revel! I ordered to die for pork chops here one evening. They were succulent and perfectly seasoned, which is hard to do considering I have had a plethora of dry pork chop dishes.

I would recommend making reservations here, otherwise you might be in for a wait during busy times. Also, make sure you reserve a good block of time for your experience. Staff are wonderful and appropriately attentive, but may be on "southern time," which is often much slower paced and relaxed than most people are used to. If you're patient, however, you are in for a treat!

I have heard so many good things about Almond's that it made my experience that much worse.
    My experience blow by blow:
Seated outside...20 minutes later a woman takes our drink order...10 minutes later our sodas arrived..10 minutes later our waitress introduces herself and takes our orders...25 minutes later our food arrives and is very bland.  How do you mess up quesadillas?!  Never an apology and the check was about $14 each.

While there are some cajun/creole-inspired dishes, I wouldn't necessarily call this a cajun/creole place.

The restaurant's website said their dress code was "just wear clothes," but I found that most people here are dressed quite nicely, so I was a little uncomfortable arriving casually-dressed.  The atmosphere is unique - nice touch of lighting and trees inside the building.  Looks very cool.  White tablecloths and most people are drinking wine.

The food was pretty good, but I felt it was quite highly priced for what we received.

LOVE THE FRIED CHICKEN AND GUMBO!! But order black beans and mashed potatoes instead of the vegetables... it's definitely MUCH better that way :)

This was my 3rd time at this restaurant and every time was as good as the last.   This is probably one of the best values for Clayton.  While some of the dishes do have a Cajun flair, it is not fair to call this place Cajun/creole.   Nice atmosphere without the normal stuffy Clayton feel.

Excellent food, tried the fried chicken (so random but boneless and great), salmon ravioli app (so amazing), crab cakes (great), and bread pudding and the gooey cake with vanilla ice cream. Both were awesome. Whatever ice cream they use is UNREAL. Also really good prices. Park behind, it's much easier than the street. There is a hidden back entrance.

We had another excellent experience at Almond's tonight. The food and service were top notch. My wife and I both had the tuna, and the kids split the fried chicken. Everything was delicious, the portions were just the right size (perhaps, a bit generous), and everyone was more than satisfied.

I would describe the cuisine at Almonds as creative American, certainly not Cajun or Creole though there may be specials one could describe as fitting those classifications. Excellent food and wine reasonably priced.

Almonds is a delightfully unpretentious little bistro in Clayton. I've dined (dinners only) here a dozen or so times in my 16 years in The Lou. It is consistently good food. The chopped salad is YUM, much greater than the sum of it's parts, and has a cult following. Ditto the pan fried chicken (not my personal fave), the tuna steak, and the gumbo. For me, if there's risotto on the menu, that's the bomb.

I'm a long-time fan of Almond's. The food is always great and the servers are knowledgeable and confident. My favorite meal is a cup of gumbo followed by tuna seared their way. I'm never disappointed. My husband is a huge fan of their pizza as an appetizer and their pasta pleaser specials. I think he's tried them all. We took my 80+ year-old father there and he fell hard for the fried chicken. Almond's sticks to a great line-up of appetizers and entrees and consistently delivers savory, good food. My only criticism is with the ambient noise. On a busy night, you'll want to lean into the table and listen to your fellow diners a little more intently.

Almond's is located on Maryland Ave. just west of Brentwood Blvd. There is parking in front as well as in the rear of the shops which is accessible from Brentwood Blvd. or Forsyth Blvd. The restuarant consists of 2 open spaces seperated by a wall. I would advise making reservations. We went on a Friday night around 7:30 pm and it was packed. The menu is on a chalk board. The selections are 2 soup choices, 3 to 4 salad choices, 5-8 appetizers & about 10-13 entrees. There are also nightly specials that you can ask your server. The decor is contemporary.  There is a bar in the restuaruant, so if you get there early you can wait at the bar until your table is ready. I ordered their chicken and sausage gumbo. It was good. It had more of a true soup consistency than what I was use to. I ordered the pan fried chicken. It was 2 pieces of chicken with mash potatoes & snow peas. It was good. However, when I hear pan fried chicken, I am used to a full chicken breast lightly breaded andn cooked that the juices are still running when you get served. I also ordered their chocolate souffle cake. It was a good desert, but I guess that I have been spoiled at other restuarants. It came on a huge plate, but the cake only took up about a 1/10th of the plate. It came with cinnamon ice cream. Good desert, wish it was larger ( I have a sweet tooth). Almond's is a perfect date place. Casual attire was worn by us. Other patrons wore similar attire (jeans, nice shirt or nice blouse).
